  • Did you know there's another non-communism region of China? Yes, I'm talking about Macau....for the first time. Everyone forgets about Macau (also spelled Macao), but it's actually really interesting-and not quite like its neighbor Hong Kong.

      Yep! Many of them speak in Cantonese, the only people I hear speaking mandarin are sometimes tourists and sometimes in other situations...but still there's both, just a student in Macau ^^ I hope I can learn more! I suck at mandarin but at least I speak fluent Cantonese 😅😅

    The difference between Hong Kong and Macau is that, Portuguese government HAD actually given PRC control over macau in 1970s and Portugal's role in Macau after 1967 as "a caretaker of a condominium under foreign supervision".The Portuguese government carried out de-colonization policies and proposed Macau's handover to China to occur in 1978. The Chinese government REJECTED this proposal, believing that an early transfer of Macau would impact relations with Hong Kong. So, the handover of Macau to PRC is de facto NOT in 1999 but FAR BEFORE.

  • @sion8
    @sion8 7 років тому +7

    I never forgot, I always wanted you to talk about Macau since the beginning; specially when you talked about Hong Kong and the rebellion that they had a couple years ago.
    I think two of the reasons Macau and Hong Kong have such different outcomes might have to do with Macau being smaller than HK and also probably just as important HK and Macau have their own individual customs areas and governments, meaning Hong-Kongers that are known to be rebellious may not be allowed in and that Article 23 only applying on one and not the other also hurts the Macanese. If Macau is to be just as free as HK the people's loving in both SARs needed to interact more and HK people needs to act on their behalf just as much as on the behalf of their region as they have more influence and I also believe Portugal should look into how they can help their former dependency.

      The British never gave Hong Kong back to China willingly, the British had no choice. The people of Hong Kong never wanted to become part of China again either, but Hong Kong was only leased from China and the CCP was never going to extend the lease to Britain when it expired. Britain would have given Hong Kong it's own independence, but because of the lease it was not in a position to grant it.

      They should try to renegotiate "the handover" and stating that the Toibaak Government (the Republic of China) is "the legitimate government of China", and then only accept mail that reads "Hong-Kong, Taiwan" instead of "Hong-Kong, China", and rename the Cantonese language "the Taiwanese language" in their Basic Law just to spite the C.C.P. Interesting video after recently visiting all of these places last month. I definitely began to notice that, despite English being common in Hong Kong, it was easier to rely on my partner's Mandarin, because Cantonese accents in English are quite a lot harder to understand if they're not well-studied, compared to Mainland and Macau. It's not a long drive from Shenzhen (in mainland) to HK. And it's not a long boat trip between HK and Macau either, but you can tell the difference once you get to each of the different regions. Portuguese signs everywhere was a bit of a shock, even though I knew it was a former Portuguese colony.

    Macanese received full Portugal citizenship before the handover. Hongkongers did not get full British citizenship. That is why the Macanese are not so stressed about the CCP's growing influence - they have a "plan B" since they have the right of abode in the EU. Hongkongers do not.

But, yes, generally, Macao is less rebellious than Hong Kong. But it doesn't mean the anti-CCP protests don't exist, and as far as I know, they're prominent enough to get some news coverage. Hopefully they will grow.
