Macau citizen here. Many citizens are speaking Mandarin. False. Many mainlanders immigrate to Macau and they speak Mandarin. Usual Macau citizens still speak Cantonese.
Terrence Ma exactly. (Macau citizen)
Yep! Many of them speak in Cantonese, the only people I hear speaking mandarin are sometimes tourists and sometimes in other situations...but still there's both, just a student in Macau ^^ I hope I can learn more! I suck at mandarin but at least I speak fluent Cantonese 😅😅
Why you suck at mandarin? It's only a language kind of different from cantonese.

Oh thank you so much for making this! Don't know if it was on schedule anyways at all but it feels good to believe it is because of my asking about Macau a couple weeks ago on Facebook :3
You're the best!
Macau tem seu coração profundamente enraizado com Portugal. 442 anos de convívio com a pátria mãe. Por Macau passou Camões e em Macau permanece o sangue altivo português.
Macau is a beautify territory. I was there few months ago 😁can't wait to go back again! Definitely worth visiting. I love to travel; love to take pics and videos and share my experience😁
Finally you do a video about Macau.
and it gave me aids!
Top episode! Thank you!
The difference between Hong Kong and Macau is that, Portuguese government HAD actually given PRC control over macau in 1970s and Portugal's role in Macau after 1967 as "a caretaker of a condominium under foreign supervision".The Portuguese government carried out de-colonization policies and proposed Macau's handover to China to occur in 1978. The Chinese government REJECTED this proposal, believing that an early transfer of Macau would impact relations with Hong Kong. So, the handover of Macau to PRC is de facto NOT in 1999 but FAR BEFORE.
I never forgot, I always wanted you to talk about Macau since the beginning; specially when you talked about Hong Kong and the rebellion that they had a couple years ago.
I think two of the reasons Macau and Hong Kong have such different outcomes might have to do with Macau being smaller than HK and also probably just as important HK and Macau have their own individual customs areas and governments, meaning Hong-Kongers that are known to be rebellious may not be allowed in and that Article 23 only applying on one and not the other also hurts the Macanese. If Macau is to be just as free as HK the people's loving in both SARs needed to interact more and HK people needs to act on their behalf just as much as on the behalf of their region as they have more influence and I also believe Portugal should look into how they can help their former dependency.
Hong Kong and Macau are ridiculously expensive . A small pizza costs 20 US$ ! A small bottle of water 3$ ! A banana 2$ ! WTF
marios gianopoulos God damn ! In Saudi Arabia one kilogram of banana costs 1$ and a big pizza costs 4$ . Look at the differences.
Vote For Pedro Saudi arabia doesn't have an advanced economy like asian economies.
The cost of things is cheap when the main source of people's food and shelter comes from state owned oil company instead of the private sector.

Thank you so much for this insight into Macau. I visiting there this past September and was stunned to see that a majority of the people speaks Mandarin and could not understand why since almost a decade ago, it was less commercialized and influenced by China. Going back to Hong Kong, I was so glad to hear some Cantonese and English being spoken and there's still some mom and pop shops along the side of the streets.
A vast majority of people in Macau speak Cantonese for sure. The people you met were probably tourists, new immigrants or people with work permit from Mainland China; and there are lots of them here.
I'm from Macau by the way.
mainly tourist speak mandarin. locals speak cantonese or english!
Macau also still has a lot more European architecture. Which is also the main reason to visit there if you're not a gambler.
Miss these more fun segments, bring them back Chris!

I love how a vast majority of Hong Kong residents prefer a return to British rule but it will sadly never happen.
DeanGordon my mom is from hk. she doesn't support British rule. neither any of my family members. neither our friends in hk. they want more autonomy, not to return to be a colony.
The British never gave Hong Kong back to China willingly, the British had no choice. The people of Hong Kong never wanted to become part of China again either, but Hong Kong was only leased from China and the CCP was never going to extend the lease to Britain when it expired. Britain would have given Hong Kong it's own independence, but because of the lease it was not in a position to grant it.
They should try to renegotiate "the handover" and stating that the Toibaak Government (the Republic of China) is "the legitimate government of China", and then only accept mail that reads "Hong-Kong, Taiwan" instead of "Hong-Kong, China", and rename the Cantonese language "the Taiwanese language" in their Basic Law just to spite the C.C.P. Hong-Kong (Hønggong) should become a part of the Republic of China.
Kale Girl It had a very high degree of autonomy, freedon and democracy under British rule. Alot more than the current situation where communism is on the horizon
BMasterToronto78 We made Hong Kong a massive trade port with Asia. It will never be returned to us

HI I am learning standard mandarin(simplified) and portuguese(mainly the most common dialects of brazil and portugal) as well as spanish, english, latin, dutch, german, french and swedish. I would like to live abroad for some time soon and practice language skills and I thought maybe macau or hong kong would be fun. Do you guys think macau would be a good place to do just that? or Hong kong maybe?
thanks in advance
Interesting video after recently visiting all of these places last month. I definitely began to notice that, despite English being common in Hong Kong, it was easier to rely on my partner's Mandarin, because Cantonese accents in English are quite a lot harder to understand if they're not well-studied, compared to Mainland and Macau. It's not a long drive from Shenzhen (in mainland) to HK. And it's not a long boat trip between HK and Macau either, but you can tell the difference once you get to each of the different regions. Portuguese signs everywhere was a bit of a shock, even though I knew it was a former Portuguese colony.
"Portuguese signs everywhere" even nobody speaks portuguese... It's like just an allegory
So Chris were you -laundering money- also making a fortune in Macau?
It's Macau not Macao because I am a real Macanese and I can speak Cantonese in real life
你的中文名字叫屎尿煩,去死吧!
Too bad you don't speak Portuguese...
Even worst that Macau isn't Portuguese anymore and HK isn't British, offering Empires like potatoes.
@@patrialusitana2648 Portuguese is difficult! I'm learning it...
Macanese received full Portugal citizenship before the handover. Hongkongers did not get full British citizenship. That is why the Macanese are not so stressed about the CCP's growing influence - they have a "plan B" since they have the right of abode in the EU. Hongkongers do not.
In Hong Kong, you cannot use MOP. In Macau, you can use both HKD and MOP... but unless you ask beforehand, your HKD change will be given in MOP. LOL. :)
I love macao because macau is cool or owesome and there a lots of toys in there
i dont have problem with hk speaking more mandarin. i just hope they keep they keep the traditional characters.

BMasterToronto78 i didnt know there was a Taiwanese dialect of Mandarin.
He got out of Macau before they could harvest his organs.
Another difference is that Macau has a famous motorcycle street race held every year. On closed city roads, it is very fast and very dangerous with absolutely no run-off areas, just armco barriers lining the course.
Went to HK and Macau last week, the drivers in HK are crazy and will honk at you if you were to stand too near to the road when the lights are red, while in Macau, people are more likely to respect walkers and may stop even during green lights
The thing is that people in Hong-Kong are rude as fuck and people in Macau are not.

VolvenIV haha nailed it!
Both are under the thumb of the unelected regime in beijing, ultimately :(
Hey Chris, are you still in HK area?
Which is better in general to visit? Hong kong or macau?
There are anti-China protests in Macao, though they're smaller than Hong Kong's. If you google "Macau Protests" then you will get results. But, yes, generally, Macao is less rebellious than Hong Kong. But it doesn't mean the anti-CCP protests don't exist, and as far as I know, they're prominent enough to get some news coverage. Hopefully they will grow.
Hahahaha u really want Macau to lose everything they’ve been working for for the past 50 years? If the Chinese government doesn’t see Macau as a problem then even if after 30 years Macau becomes part of mainland they won’t change the system in Macau. Hongkong in the other hand....

Since most "macauan" people are mainland chinese, they had no problem with CCP, not like hong kong who already taste freedom and democracy for at least 80 years.
IndraEMC
The people of Macau are _Macanese_.
People in HK did not really have real freedom and democracy while under British rule unless the criticism was directed towards China. They never had any real human rights either. The difference was that HK became prosperous under British capitalism while China remained in poverty under communism.

Funny how portuguese despite, four hundred years never was commonly spoken in macau, but english at least made some inroads in hong kong. English was never widely spoken though, mandarin even less so. Cantonese is a common language in these two places and for worldwide overseas chinese, so it ought to be recognized by central government.
