- Well, first proper video in a long time. I was a big fan of Patapon when it was first released (even before Dissidia.) With the HD Remaster and easy streaming capabilities, I thought I'd see if this is something people may be interested in.
Really cool thing: Streaming it in this sort of lowish quality actually makes this game look almost identical to the original PSP Patapon.
Firstly let's get my excuses out of the way of why I sucked and then explain my set up and why I went with what I did.
- Using no Headphones with some slight audio problems. Hence why I had difficulties getting into Fever AND was randomly dropping Fever. My own personal fault for not using headphones though. I also suck at using Miracles/Juju on the fly, hence why even though I have Earthquake equipped, I'm not actually using it.
- I'm also more used to the more lenient Patapon 2 and 3. That combined with playing the original Patapon with the HD TV audio is... jarring.
Some notes:
- There are times where I need to purposely drop fever (Though most of the time here, it's unintentional) You cannot dodge later level bosses with PonPata song if you're relying solely on fever. Dogaeen here has two basic instant kill attacks at this level and you need to make sure Hatepon (The flagbearer) is not killed. If he is, it's auto game over. The longer the fight lasts also, the more desynced he becomes to the beat which makes his most dangerous attack the one where he pounds into the ground. It is easily can kill your run.
Finally my weird timing for ChakaChaka during the laser: I am not worried about my Megapon or Yaripon from ever dying from his Laser. My Yumipons however are the most likely to die from it. Although not successful all the time, timing ChakaChaka when I do at times allow my Pons to be on offence and then the Dagaeen's laser will hit just as ChakaChaka is completed, massively reducing the damage done to my Yumipons while keeping up a solid offence. I rarely need to use PonChaka into ChakaChaka thanks to the Stew basically giving me the massive defence boost in the first place. (Without Stew, the whole fight is literally PonChaka every other move and makes for a far more boring experience.)
Army Choice
A full Mogyoon team is probably the best for this sort of thing. They have insane damage and massive stagger rates and have insane defences. Their disadvantage though is their poor rate of fire. If you go for a stagger set up, you want to use piercing weapons. This makes Yumipons (Archers) and Yaripons (Spear/Javelin) the best choice with Piercing Bows and Dokaknels Fangs. Piercing Weapons aren't as important versus Dagaeen because there's almost no point where the shot leaves his hitbox and enters his hitbox again. However they do help break his hands which gives another stagger/chance of another item. (If you want to see where/why Piercing is really strong, I might upload a fight with Cioking.)
This leaves my third choice open and I chose Megapon. Their main advantage over anyone else is their range, which is an advantage (that I need to learn to still use apparently.) This allows Hatepon more safety. Also they do a ton of damage with ChakaChaka and have a cool ass Green Wall thing with PonChaka + ChakaChaka.
Divine Weapons are interesting. They basically increase most of your stats. They are definitely the best single weapons in these games but I almost chose not to include them because of a unique problem. Despite descriptions saying otherwise, they infact do not stagger. This was a quirk that was carried from the original game and was also a problem that was present in Patapon 2. I wish they fixed the description... either way in the end I ended up including them since my army was hurt more without their inclusion.
The Ancient Weapons are pretty much a must. Though they have no piercing capabilities and slightly less stagger rate, they more than make up for it by having an insane rate of fire. I think they are almost as good, if not slightly better than Piercing weapons. Definitely best in a Mogyoon's hands.
Finally the Giant Weapons. the trait of Giant Weapons is they attack really slow but they usually have some pretty insane damage. Giant Bow "Failnaught" sadly lives up to it's name. The only thing it has over a Piercing Bow is it has around 30 more max damage. Its disadvantages are that it's slower than the Piercing Bow, has less Critical than a Piercing Bow and cannot Pierce. On the reverse however, Giant Spear "Bullet" is really interesting. It has higher Stagger Rate, slightly better damage than Dokaknel's Fang and just because of that it's worth using.
Finally: I need help figuring how how to deal with Dokaknel's Fire Breath at later stages. ChakaChaka is killing me and I'm not sure if PonChaka + ChakaChaka will help that much. PonPata inconsistently works. =X So if anyone has any tips/hints, let me know.
For a team full of the most likely rarepon to stagger, I was honestly expecting some more staggers. Seems like nothing in this game comes close to Patapon 2's tree army.

Looks like some animations were smoothed out... but only some. Also Dogaen seems to not sync with your beat. Good to know that remaster didn't fix that problem.
Oh well, good fight, although it was a bit too long.
The boss 'not being synced to your beat' is not a bug but is actually intended. The boss every level gets slightly faster which allows them to attack off the beat. It's why bosses in Patapon have such long windup to all their attacks: So that you stand a chance when they get slightly faster.
The fight was long because honestly I barely hit any real perfect beats. It's really hard playing the PS4 version when it has Sound Desync Issues AND you don't wear Headphones. Honestly I would say it's still best to play on the PSP version of the game.

KaijuKraid this is so true. I just bought it thinking the patapos 2 that i played years ago was patapon 1. I stopped playing it and just hoped they bring patapon 2 in ps4 too.

I know I am a bit late but I know a cool build against fire breathing. I noticed you prefer solid defense while also having a great offense. Kibapon tatepon is a really cool build for that. Tatepons are the best tanks and are able to negate almost any damage with the chaka chaka song. Kibapon are immune to most damage while dashing in fever mode so if needed you can still attack the boss while they are attacking. They stand in an offensive position during chakachaka so if you pair that with tatepons you can be both offensive and defensive at the same time. The last spot is empty and optional. Yumipons could be a decent option because they are at the back of the army and away from danger+very high range. For rarepon selection, you can go barsala for both; especially kibapon because kibapon are fast units and barsala has the highest movement speed on par with pyopyo. Tatepon could also be matched with another rarepon with high hp to tank hits but barsala is pretty solid.
