I'M POPEYE THE SAILOR MAN by Billy Costello as Popeye, recorded in 1935. Billy Costello provided the original voice for Popeye in his first cartoons. Enjoy!
Great song indeed!!! I remember watching the cartoons as a kid. In the early part of 1981 I remember watching the movie with Robin Williams as Popeye. Popeye was every kids hero especially when he ate his spinach and beat the tar of Brutus and other villains.
Billy Costello gave Popeye that trademark voice. Unfortunately Billy became demanding and gave the cartoon execs a hard time. So Jack Mercer came in and gave voice to Popeye for decades.
Recorded on April 27, 1935, while Costello was still providing Popeye's voice in Max Fleischer's Paramount cartoons. That summer, however, he got TOO arrogant for his own good, and was fired.
In the early 70’s i remember listening to a recording of Popeye The Sailor Man sung by a Black man. This song told the story of how he got into a fight with Popeye over a “that woman” and lost. Some of the lyrics, as I remember and to the best of my knowledge , were: “Popeye, the sailor man - said he’s rough and he’s tough he’s got an iron hand. And I can’t understand why she’d go for that one-eyed man! Well, my back is nearly broken and I’m on the floor...but I ‘turned my trick?’; and I know the score - and I’m. It gonna mess with Popeye no more!” If anybody knows of this rendition, please let me know. I would love to hear it again and share it with my children!
Talk about a blowhard & a one trick pony who didn’t know a good thing when he had it right in front of his face. When you read about how this guy acted & how he was like, you just wouldn’t understand it. No wonder they got rid of him. NO ONE’S irreplaceable, now & then. It’s kinda hard for me to choose between him & Jack Mercer. I’m used to Jack but I guess once upon a time i heard Billy & I didn’t know it. BOTH are the canon when it comes to Popeye, so I want begrudge giving the guy credit for that but still.
I really believe there are people who cannot accept success they're afraid of something they always wanted when they are being offered the opportunity..
Except that if Jack Mercer hadn't just happened to be around and able to do the voice, they would have been forced to tolerate Costello. He would have been hard to replace.

How different might his life have been if he was halfway decent about it. He died a nobody managing a trailer park lonely & forgotten. Mercer however is still beloved. There’s a reason why they say everything happens for a reason children. It truly does. That’s life.
are you kidding me i been looking for this for the longest time thank you soo much for shareing this.
I love seeing new uploads of these Billy Costello records, thank you!

Jack Mercer was hired in after that to voice Popeye.

Fun. This man started out as Popeye. Neat.
Whose the original voice of Popeye the Sailor Man, and does he also sing the song or is that some other gentleman?
Billy Costello was the original Popeye voice and yes he sang in this recording but eventually he got fired and Jack Mercer took over the voice.
