Free Chicken Food? BSF Larvae Harvesting

I need to find a way to supplement the chicken feed for my backyard chickens so I don't have to buy so much feed. I was able to buy one tote and use other supplies that I had around the house. This is a quick and easy method for harvesting Black Soldier Fly Larvae. Even it didn't work out quite as well as I wanted this time around, we are still experimenting!

Black Soldier Fly Larvae took over my compost bin by accident. I was concerned at first until I found out that they were beneficial. It's amazing how fast they break the food scraps down. In the winter, I made the mistake of cleaning the whole bin out because I didn't see activity. They go dormant / slow down in the winter, but come back after it warms up. It might be worth it to buy some live Larvae just to get things started.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm going to add more food and also some cardboard as I heard they like to lay the eggs in the cardboard. If that doesn't work I think I'll buy some.
