It’s time to combine some of our favorite things! Large size, DIY, World War I aircraft, and fireworks! We love building and flying. We also love fireworks and explosions. Today we combine our loves and see how much punishment the new triplane XL can take. Josh sets out to perfect this new design and make sure it not only flies good, but also builds easy. At the same time, we have fun with new vacuum form equipment from our friends at Formech and learn a little bit about how to add extra scale to our easy to build airplanes. After a quick paint job, we get with our friends and family to let them light up hundreds of Roman candles to see how much punishment these planes can take. Just got back from Oshkosh: your designs were well represented at evening R/C flying events near the museum. And after watching a beautiful new F7F nose in and disintegrate, I'm even more inclined towards building my own foam board airframes.

If you could attach the cylinders to the motor so that they rote when the motor runs like the rotary engines in the original aircraft that would be awesome!
That’s a neat idea. However like the real rotary engines of early biplanes and triplanes, you would have to deal with extra motor torque at low speeds, due to the added rotational inertia. I guess more realism!

We used to do this stuff with spads, ok, we used paintball guns or the occasional spudgun, but it was a ton of fun. With the light foam board stuff it'd be much safer. Fun times relived, thanks.

Spent my whole teaching career using Formech vacuum formers. Great fun, they seem to have fallen out of favour in schools now, pushed out by newer tech like 3d printing and laser cutters. You really need a CAD CAM milling machine to make the moulds.

Awesome! I highly recommend looking into airsoft with glowing bullets. The would probably do a lot of damage to the airplanes in a cool way and I bet you have local airsoft players that can help you either borrow their stuff or invite them in for some fun!
My old challenge still remains. I want to see a full WWI TriPlane versus Sopwith Camel battle, but with onboard airsoft mounted in the WWI fashion with a chain interrupter synchronized with the propellers, just the way the real ones were mounted.

There are so many planes in the flite test store that are beginner friendly. Have a look at the models. They will show skill levels in build and flight characteristics. The tiny trainer and FT flyer are two great places to start. The simple cub and simple scout are great second or third planes. The Fokker dr1 is also friendly to fly but a little more involved on the build side. The nutball is a great oddball that has it's own unique flight style. I almost always have a light up nutball for night flights as it is a great calm wind slow flyer. Jump in and have fun!

I lost track of how many flights I have on my original Triplane. I built it when they first came out, and it’s been to multiple Flite Fests and days at the club field. I’m sorely tempted to build the larger version!

Nice plane and thanks for sharing. Holding roman candles in bare hands - fun, but not a good idea. I had an employee who was doing this and the roman candle blew up in his hands. He was in so much pain for several days that he could not think straight and could not function at work. What are the chances - I don't know but maybe you should wear heavy gloves if you do this? Maybe bottle rockets aimed and launched from PVC pipe? Or paintball...
Something I saw in the late 80's or so. One of my dads friends had a roman candle backfire on his bare foot and lower leg. He had he had small red burns all over. He stuck his foot in our ice chest, I hope it helped! So after that, we all hold them off to our side, just in case!

Vacuform was a toy you could get in the sixties that did the same process on a MUCH smaller, hand pumped, scale.
I kinda remember that.....now thanks to the internet, you can do vac forming at home with pegboard and a shop vac.
edit: after a quick google, yup, just like I remembered.

@@muskokamike127 Yuup, those too. I even had a woodburning set where you plugged in what was essentially a soldering iron and "drew" patterns in bits of wood. Or, in the baseboard of your bedroom😄

Can you take a plastic model kit add an engine and RC controls and make it fly? Like an AMT or Rexell model that uses airplane glue to put it together. Perhaps collaborate with a model maker channel. After all they are supposed to be scale models. I'd love to see a couple of different models like a P51 Mustang and a British Spitfire.

Wondering how much that plastic forming machine costs. Old school type stuff that probably cost $1000 or more these days. Used to play with a vacuum forming machine when i was young In the 60's . Made by Mattel and was called vac-u-form .
It can be all yours for the low low on-sale price of $5000 USD.
Really cool stuff they're doing, but I can't imagine why they're pointing their viewers to this stuff this expensive with the implication that it's great for DIY / hobby projects.

What's the big deal about that vacuum forming machine ??? Back in the 60's my folks bought me a Mattel Vacu-Form machine toy. I made all sorts of things with that, though on a smaller scale, ha ha.
