Commercial Pilot Checkride - Interview with DPE Jason Blair
Pilot examiner Jason Blair talks about what you need to know for the Commercial checkride. He focuses on how to Commercial maneuvers including chandelles, steep spirals, lazy eights, eights on pylons, and 180° accuracy landings. The oral portion is similar to the Private, but with an emphasis on Commercial certificate privileges, and no it doesn’t allow you to immediately start flying charter.

I’m glad my comm checkride wasn’t too anal. I could definitely imagine how a DPE can fail a candidate in so many ways.
Power off 180s can make or break a candidate. On a perfect day they are easy when winds change they are can be difficult even for an experienced pilot.
The applicant must know all the steps to each maneuver and set it up. More memory than skill.
"Instrument ra-TING", "Instruc-TOR" lol. Very helpful video though. Thank you.
Holy commercials lol. Pun was intended
Thanks for this!
Around @8:00 he talks about the instrument hours required for Commercial.
I'm currently working on my commercial training while I wait for my IFR checkride. I have done nearly 40 hours of IFR dual instruction over the past few months and have around 45 total IFR hours. But I'm being told by my instructor that the DPE we use has said that I'd need an ADDITIONAL 10 hours of IFR training specifically to meet the stipulation for commercial and that those hours must be AFTER my IFR training... saying that using those IFR training hours from during my IFR training would be "double dipping"
Now, I've seen everyone else say to the contrary, as Jason does... that as long as you properly log everything, all IFR dual instruction AFTER the 15 required for the IFR rating can be counted towards commercial.
I've even made it a point to put this in my logs for all dual instrument flights after the 15 hour mark
---"Worked on increasing flight proficiency in the areas of operation covered under 14 CFR 61.129(a)(3)(i)
Specifically, instrument flying, partial panel skills, recovery from unusual flight attitudes, and intercepting and tracking navigational systems."---
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.. do other DPEs do it that way or if this one the odd one out?
That's an odd one out and needs to be corrected. The 10 hours of instrument flight training required for a commercial can and should be credited from an instrument rating. The 10 hours of instrument training requirement for commercial ticket are in the regs for people WITHOUT an instrument rating. I'd call the FSDO on the DPE and see if they can sort it out.
i can’t take the damn ad’s!!!! Who the hell listens to these ads anyway they’re like robo calls!
Great video btw.
*great content and talk! helped me look at some of the info and maneuvers in a different way, and get me started on my Commercial!*
I did my IR ride with Jason and look forward to taking my commercial and CFI with him. Great guy.
Did my commercial 2 days ago. This video was really helpful!
So lucky that I was able to see this video when I have check ride with Jason in a month
This podcast was great! Very relaxed conversation and the dpe gave great insight
Thanks Jason!
I remember when I did my commercial check ride back in 1993. I had the same DPE for my instrument, commercial and my multi engine. These were done in three different locations. I couldn’t believe he moved around just like I did. I was in the Air Force at the time. So now, as a commercial single multi instrument, I have done nothing with the ratings other than put them away for 13 years andrecently got back into flying. Can’t do this professionally because I’m over age 60 which means I’m out of the running for any kind of real flying job. I guess I could consider being a CFI just to keep current and give back to the aviation community and teach some young person, the art of airman ship and obtaining their ratings.
Thank you so much for the clear and detailed explanations, really well done!
You're very welcome! And please subscribe to the Aviation News Talk podcast and tell you're friends about it.
Perfect timing! I’m about to start CPL training! thank you very much!;-)
I'm glad you found it helpful! Have fun getting your Commercial certificate, and please tell your friends about the Aviation News Talk podcast.
Super awesome, so helpful as I prepare for this! Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
This was good to hear before my CPL checkride. I'll be honest, listening about the maneuvers actually made me more nervous.
This is great I would love to see you do one for the CFI check ride
Yes please
As long as you have an IFR rating most DPE’s will over look the additional 10 hrs of instrument training but there’s nothing wrong with more training especially IFR in my opinion.
RN, no question, extra training is always better!
Will the FAA overlook it if you get in trouble/have an accident and they audit your logbook?
Or are they going to strip you of the certificates that you didn't properly earn?
Better watch out....
Great timing for me as well 🤙🏽
Excellent, I'm glad you found it helpful. If you listen to podcasts, go ahead and subscribe to Aviation News Talk, which is where I originally released this episode. You can find it at aviationnewstalk.com and the free subscription links are in the right hand column.
Double advertisements every 2.5 minutes? Sorry but no way.
landing distance tolerance for a power off 180 is 200ft beyond the touchdown point not 100ft.
One thing not mentioned is to maintain altitude +- 50 feet in slow flight -0+5
Thanks! I'm recommending to my CPL hopefuls
I don’t see anything in the ACS that says you have to roll into the other steep turn immediately. A DPE said the same thing. Can you clarify?
My instructor did not say this either and the ACS does not say it as well... MAYBE the ACS was updated between then and now... but to me this DPE seems like a high and mighty one that will bust you for the smallest of things. I try to avoid those as much as possible.
141 Schools log that 250 DXC as SPIC. the instructor is on board for the flight but is still counts for their 250 DXC.
6:30 there's a legal interpretation that states you don't need to do the 10 hours of instrument flight time if you have an instrument rating already.
Is it correct to say that on the Comm Check we will only be required to perform Lazy 8s "or" Chandells and Steep Turn "or" Steep Spiral?
negative
Look @ your ACS. It will describe the examiners "pick list"
Replace every mention of "momentum" with "energy."
Commercial pilot maneuvers are all about energy management.
someone needs to stop all these damn ad’s on you tube it’s getting to the point you can’t even watch a video too many interruptions!
Are there time stamps or thumbnails?
CSEL nightime x country requirement doesnt say with instructor*
FAR/AIM 2023: "one 2 hour cross country flight in single engine airplane in nightime conditions that consists of straight line distance of 100nm from original point of departure"
no mention of training or with cfi.
61.129 (a) (3). It is part of the 20 hrs of training. Training=dual time with an instructor.
Steep Spiral 43:06
👍
Wow, interrupted every 2.5 minutes for commercials? Is that typical? Probably a good podcast, but I didn’t get past the first several minutes due to the interruptions.
Pay $10 for UA-cam prime. great value. 0 commercials
It's $11.99 a month, so just shy of $150 a year plus taxes. Not in the budget. Plenty of other aviation sources that don't try to pay the mortgage with every viewer.
I didn't get that many.

Solo means the only person in the airplane? Or the only pilot in the airplanne? With your wife along, you're saying that disqualifies you from tge solo hrs requirements? Interesting.
The ACS and the Airplane Flying Handbook mention nothing about "maximizing descent rate" during the steep spiral... Wtf is this DPE smoking. It's a power off gliding maneuver, a descending turn around a point. Not an emergency.
Yea what this DPE is saying for somethings is not what you want to do during a checkride.
Way too many ads!!
90 min video with 45 mins of ads - including the colon cleansing pills.......disappointing.
Targeted marketing. You just told the internet what's in your search history. 😂
I was a professor for a long time. This is so far from instructional it’s comedic.
Disappointing. I was excited when I saw Jason's name as I've seen him many times on the AOPA flight instructor course videos over the years. He's great. Wish this had some video.
