Rebinding DUNE - Part 2 - Rescuing A Vintage Book: Custom Endpapers, Backing & Covers
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- Hello everyone!
My gamble on buying an old copy of Dune paid off, though not without some serious effort to make it so. In this video I’ll finish off the sewn text block with some custom marbled endpapers and woven endbands before strengthening the spine and attaching some covers. Sounds easy, right? Well, compared with repairing every page, I would agree with you! But it’ll still take a lot of careful work, so come along and join me on the journey!
If you missed part one, watch it here: • Rebinding DUNE - Part ...
Or if you'd rather skip to part 3: • Rebinding DUNE - Part ...
Or jump right to the big Finale: • Rebinding DUNE - FINAL...
Cheers,
Dennis

One hundred years from now and more, long after we're all gone, this book will likely still be in someone's library, bringing great joy. Looking forward to your next installment in its making.
Or along the way someone will throw it in the trash because "books are for nerds lol"
@@RJiiFin
Well, R. Jii Fin... *Does those books' 📖📘 are still for some nerds* 🤓 out there, and *that someone's will callously throwing it right into the trashcan 🗑 because of THAT reason* by then?
this book is an investment piece. It'll be setting in a collectors library hundreds of years from now, slowly inflating in value.
@@shafismaili1347unless the society soon to come don't go burning books. Some major religions hate books that don't suit their needs
Just keep it out of the US.
Who need Netflix when you have this 📚
You said it
Because 30 minutes is going to replace endless hours of stuff on Netflix? Also, you can't go between both?
@@gregpenismith1248 I don’t have hours to spend watching Netflix and I find this much more entertaining
Who needs Netflix period. Total junk
@@thefryinallofuscool story. Pretty sure several million people would disagree with you.
Edit: Dude, you have no room to talk. You play Star Citizen and believe in fairy tales like the bible.
This is like watching good, old fashioned television where you’re really, really excited for the next episode - and you have to _wait_ for it to be broadcast. As the episode was about to end, my mind went ‘Noooo, but I want to watch more!’ You have such a comforting, pleasant voice and the pacing of your videos is just top notch. Thank you!
I completely agree!
I shouted at the TV 😂 can't wait for the next one.
He pulled a Villeneuve on us. Turning what we thought was one sitting into three glorious installments.
This is looking like another heirloom -- the whole thing is gorgeous, but those endpapers are perfection for this particular book.
We are all dying for part 3 brother
I just came back 3 weeks after watching this video because I wanted to post this!!
I've been checking every week since part 2, love these comments haha
Should be this week. Hang in there.
@@FourKeysBookArts very excited, thanks for the reply my friend!
The beauty of marbling is that not only can it be used to print unique and gorgeous paper designs, it can also be used to print fabrics in particular silk to create lovely textiles, and can even be used, with variations in the depth of the size bath, to paint 3D items too
Absolutely! I haven’t done much textile marbling, though I have experimented with ceramics and leather. It’s a really versatile medium.
Video! video! About cutting book
Okay, that marbling? With the leather? Gorgeous. Just GORGEOUS! And it so fits the theme. This book is going to be absolutely marvelous and I am consumed by envy. In the best way possible.
Beautiful work! The marbled end papers could not be better chosen!
Thank you! Cheers!
Inspired me??? Heck my own cast iron book press arrived today!!!! Denise i have watched a few other binders out there but YOU sir, instruct thoroughly, and cut NO corners. I had no idea that you created your own end papers as well. So lovely. Lemme buy you a cup of joe.
Thank you so much, I truly appreciate it! Welcome to the craft!
Omg it’s here 😍😍🤩
I’ve been checking your page almost everyday for this video
Hope you enjoyed it!
Glad I'm not the only one that has been checking for part 2!
This is the Dune Part 2 I’ve been waiting for
I wish I could see it in person! It looks so gorgeous, Dennis. Thank you for sharing your artistry and craftsmanship with us.
My pleasure!
I have been waiting for this one! This will be a good saturday watch ❤
PS: It was a good watch! I love the absolute attention to detail, be it in the work or the creation of the video and commentary.
You have mad skills! This is actually very exciting - I can’t wait for part 3!!!!
One Denis creates a film of Dune, the other Denis binds a book of Dune. That's awesome, I've never seen this process before, it's fascinating. Thank you!
Great narration, engaging content, and wonderful filming.
A masterful video!
Wow, thank you!
I’ve never been so engaged by someone’s raw talent, passion and mastery of their Art. Thanks so much for this series!
Stunning and immaculate per usual! BTW: just noticed you were using a Blackwing pencil. You are truly a man of impeccable taste and a man after my own heart if I’m honest. haha
I’m not exactly sure how the UA-cam algorithm sent me to this series, but boy am I glad it did. I have no interest in becoming a book binder, but watching an artist work and understanding how things are put together is something I consider infinitely valuable. Thanks for sharing your skill and passion.
Your end papers are simply gorgeous. The entire process is fascinating, but as a paper marbleizer myself, I’m particularly impressed by the end papers.
Dennis, once again just fabulous work, very good choice for the endpapers, can't wait to see the finished book!
I know complaining about a three-week gap in uploads is incredibly whiny but gosh darn it I am so excited for the next part I’m dying. I hope your next upload is planned soon!!!
Hi Dennis, that's so impressive, and absolutely brilliant!! I watched parts 1 and 2 straight off....and it's now 3am in the UK. Looking forward to part 3! Best regards!!
This book would cost a kidney, but rightfully so, when one see that much of a work put into it.
That sand dune paper marbling is crazy!
I had just finished watching part 1 and I was bummed when I saw I had to wait for part 2. Luckily, I had subscribed + clicked on the bell lol, I never do that. Amazing work man, can't believe how much I'm enjoying your channel!
I’m checking for part 3 daily😢
The edges are already forming shelves.
"He shall know your ways as if born to them."
As written...
Another amazing video! Tank you for the upload :-D
Can't wait for P3.
You simply cannot find this much dedication anywhere in life any more. Fantastic, exquisite work sir!
The marbling design could not have been more perfect!
Very excited to see the next steps. The medieval book series was super, the D&D makeover was awe-inspiring, and this one is shaping up to surpass them both! Be careful about constantly raising the bar, Dennis 😆
Where is part 3 ???????? 😫😩😭
That marbled paper is gorgeous! This book is going to be beautiful!
My favourite book, ever. It feels like an old friend.
My mother loved to read and encouraged me to read as well as sharing her books with me. I first read it in late elementary school, she and I would have long conversations about it, she would explain the parts I didn't understand...which made it all the more fascinating...so many layers.
Miss you, Mum.
You are a magnicifent artist! This will be a beautiful book!
Dannis what a beautiful design, unfortunately I don't have the gift to make them, is there any contact where I can make one? No matter how expensive it is, the quality is worth it
How about doing a bookbinding for a copy of Carl Sagan’s novel Contact? One of my favourite reads!😂
Great book!
Fantastic skills and great to see how you are always continuing to learn. Great narration, camera work and editing skills. My favourite shot was taking the roll of spine reinforcing material from the shelf. What is that stuff called?😍
Thank you, I got that roll in a bulk lot of supplies and it’ll probably last me a lifetime! It goes by several names. I call it ‘mull’, it’s also called ‘scrim’ or ‘super’.
Dry-fitting the cover boards reminds me of mortise and tendon joinery! 😉👍🏻 Brilliant! SO MUCH to learn here. Very complex process and lengthy process. You could fill an entire book just on how to MAKE or restore a book! But the video is much better. Seeing it actually done in real time is AMAZING?
Now imagine skinning and processing hundreds of hides to make all of the parchment or vellum and then having to hand write all of those pages. It's no wonder books used to be among the most valuable commodities in the world.
This Dune: Part Two is just as good as the Hollywood one
What a great work. Really pleased I found this channel. Subscribed.
Truly wonderful stuff! I'm no Luddite (as is likely true of anyone bothering to watch a video!) but I find all bespoke work fascinating. It's striking that really are no unimportant variables and each choice made seems very deliberate. And it's interesting how many steps seem to allow for few if any shortcuts (such as feathering the fibers of the tapes and fanning them out). In addition to your consider skill at the binding part you're a very talented film maker/videographer. Lastly, I think it would be fascinating and illuminating if you were to do a Q&A video! I'm sure you get a ton of questions in the comments and I know there's a million things I'm always wondering about, especially with regards to selection and maintenance of the tools.
Thanks for another great video!
Given the amont of work you put in this, I am a bit curious as to how you would have proceeded had the paper been acidic.
Regardless of that however it is, as usual, a very informative video and the book is coming beautifully.
Amazing job! Your patterned paper are truly tasteful paintings. Congratulations!
Cheers
Nooo, why’d I think it was only a two parter😭😭 can’t wait for the next one!! Subscribed :)))
Nice - Your craft is amazing, I hope you decide to teach it to someone - Cannot wait for Part 3 - A fan....😎
You should read audiobooks with your pleasant voice Dennis! 😌
Fascinating and beautiful. Thank you for sharing the process :)
this cover is very complex compared to the others you've shown previously! i like it :D thx for sharing
Dennis, this was a truly incredible labour of love to witness- thank you for sharing your process, sir!🏆
I just finished the third book, and I get why it's such a revered series that so many things get ideas from.
Loving this project
Amazing work.the only feature i wish it had at this stage is a ribbon or two. Ribbons are a positive addition to any book, being a builtin bookmark.
thanks for the video your skills at book making are really great to watch.
This is so unbelievabley cool. Master Craftsman at work.
I don't have enough instrument but i love bookbinding and i am good but i don't have any skill about cutting the book so pleeeeeeeaaaaaaaas make video about cutting
Somehow this is making me want to try bookbinding...
it’s incredible to see how much quality of your recording, editing and voiceover have improved in less than a year! amazing job, your videos about art are becoming art themselves!
Thank you so much!!
Another amazing video! Can't wait for part 3!
I can't find part 3, that must mean that you have not uploaded it yet, I hope you upload it soon I am so anxious 😮🙏🏼😱😁💓
Video about cutting book Show me your expirence about Cutting book
Ah yes.. sandworm leather. Tough yet flexible.
Man, you nailed it with those end papers! They’re perfection! ❤🎉❤🎉
Dennis, thank you for your care and time in producing this video, painstakingly documenting your process. I appreciate having a resource like yours in which I can be instructed when I take up my own bookbinding hobby.
My pleasure!
Who knew i needed this in my life at 10:48pm at night
As a bookbinder, what did you think of the filament paper OC Bible given to Paul by Doctor Yueh? I thought it was one of the most interesting objects described in the Dune. It really showed the level of technology their culture actually had to be able to make something that intricate.
It’s so intriguing to me! My problem-solving brain can’t help but start trying to figure out how to make it.
love watching this. can't wait to try my first book binding❤
amazing! always excited to see a new video from you :D
I discovered this channel with the medieval book binding and it made me want to start learning the art. Thanks to your book binding basics, I made my first leaflet a few weeks ago and I loved every step! Now, following the making of this book inspires me once more. Thank you so much for sharing such beautiful creation and inspiring us all!
❤❤❤I love this channel. Beautiful work.
Excellent work! 👏 So great to see the process on a brilliant book.
You started burnishing and I thought to myself, "There is no way that is worth all that trouble." Then you showed the side-by-side comparison, and I was wrong enough I came down here to the comments to admit it.
It’s hard to see the difference through the screen, so I’m glad I left that shot in!
I want to send all my Dune books to you to have this done...
Dennis, this is a very interesting video (all of your videos are)! Also, did you marbleize your "light" weights too?
I did! I used some of my not-so-perfect prints to wrap a couple of bricks.
omg ive been waiting for thisssss i love your videos its ART
Such a wonderful project. Can't wait to see the result
I’d like a book made entirely out of washikozo
Exquisite craftsmanship and creative designs. Inspired me to complete a project that I started in Art School many years ago and a couple of new projects stirring in my heart and mind.
Thank you for your beautiful video.... I look forward to seeing more.
📚📖📜❤
I am completely unfamiliar with this subject matter and I was wondering is there actually a market for these sorts of things? Can you make money doing this. Not that I would want to I'm just curious
You should put your bone folder in linseed oil for 24/48, it will change it's color to a richer one and make it way nicer to use
I’ve heard of this technique but never tried it. Maybe when I’ve finished this book I’ll try it out.
I encourage everyone to play a drinking game with me. Every time "paper" is mentioned in the narration, take a shot....
Better be shots of beer because according to my script you’re up for 50 drinks! Cheers!🍻
Just wanted to say thank you for this beautiful and lovely content. It's so relaxing watching you work. Had a bereavement recently and wasn't up to watching anything challenging, tripped across the first video in this series, and we've been really looking forward to this follow up episode. Roll on part 3, can't wait to see how you finish the cover.
Love this so much. I could watch it over and over. Can't wait for the next installment! Thanks for posting your process!
I've been WAITING for the second part, im so in love with it, great and relaxing video! First part daydreammed me into another realm of my grandpas library, so im very thankful for this!♡✨
Last time i watched your video was about year ago and I was very impressed. But not as much as now, you improved the camera work and commentary to 11/10. Amazing work!
As always, amazing work, amazing filming/editing/voice over, and amazing workshop room (I'm not jealous at all). Thank you for taking the time to share your art with us 🤗
Incredible work - it's really starting to come together! I love the end papers you made, and the leather you used to make the hinges would look amazing covering the book: it already looks age-old and worn down by sandstorms. This is shaping up to be a masterpiece!
I found this channel last night with the part 1 video. I watched it and got super excited about part two and as luck would have it the legend drops part 2 today. Can’t wait for part 3.
Easy sub
Not at all surprised I see a Blackwing pencil. Not at all.
You're one of my favorite makers Dennis! Super cozy and educational. Cheers from Minnesota.
Ahh this was so, so wonderful to watch after a very difficult week. The book is looking fabulous - and now I'm impatient for Part Three after that sly little tease about something different!
We got a face reveal at 2:10! Ha in all seriousness, another superlative job sir thank you for posting.
Thank you! And it’s not a first appearance for me, I’m lurking around the channel here and there😉
I'm thinking, you REALLY like Dune! Now, come on Dennis, part three already!!!
This was such a treat to watch! I LOVE Dune (hence why this popped up in my recommended) and the craftsmanship is stellar. To own a book so loved, it would be my prized possession❤
Absolutely beautiful work. I love watching a your process and hearing you narrate your thought process throughout this project!
This project is truly spectacular! Thanks so much for documenting it so beautifully.
And the hits just keep on coming! Well done, Dennis. I'm so glad you chose to make those covers so thick. This book is already beautiful. I can't wait to see the finished product!
Let’s goooooo! I can never wait for the next part 😂
