Rebinding DUNE - Part 3 - Upgrading A Vintage Book: Cover Flap, Magnets & Leather
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- Hello everyone!
In today's video I'll be adding some special elements to this copy of Dune before tackling the long and fiddly process of wrapping the entire thing in leather. Stick with me until the end though, because this book is really starting to come together!
There will be one more installment in this Dune Rebinding series, in which I'll be upgrading those plain old endbands I wove in part 2, giving the cover my own custom hand-tooled design, and then capping it all off with a special finishing touch! Thanks for tuning in, and I'll see you in Part 4!
Cheers,
Dennis

My Wheat Flour Paste Recipe
2 tbsp (18 g) white flour (strong flour or bread flour preferred)
1 cup (250 ml) water
Combine the flour and water in a double boiler or bain-marie and cook over medium heat for about 10 minutes, whisking constantly until thick and smooth. Transfer to a clean jar and cool completely. When cooled the paste should be solid, with a jelly-like consistency. Force the cooled paste through a sieve 2-3 times until smooth. Add a bit of water to thin to the desired consistency if necessary. Store in the refrigerator and use within 2-3 days.

I feel like there is a unwritten rule somewhere that if you're going to make videos about slow, careful, contemplative handicrafts like book binding, you have to wear a cable knit sweater.
A fire crackling in the background would help
Naturally there's a lot of focus on the craft of bookbinding. But I'd like for everyone to pause for a second and appreciate how incredibly well these videos are produced.
No
Yes
The wait between Infinity War and Endgame was nothing compared to the time between instalments of this! Please upload part 4 soon.
Relatable, I've been looking forward for this video and can't wait for the next part
I hope he makes a sandworm or something crazy like he did the Beholder for the DnD book!
Wow, y’all, he’s posting this at no charge to the viewer and considerable effort of his part. So appreciation to the artist is in order, not complaining.
this. So...much...this.
I know right! I felt like I was checking back every other day on the channel to see if I had missed the upload!
That half hour just flew by. Amazing work!
Glad you enjoyed it!
it rly did!! enjoyed the process all the way!
Crazy that content like this is free, appreciate the time you put into this!
Glad you enjoy it!
my grandpa was a amateur bookbinder for longer than I've been alive. He was always a bit of a quiet guy, not super eager to share his hobby with others. His house was filled with books and he had been known to disappear into the studio whenever a family event was dragging on a bit too long. I was always interested in his bookbinding, but he didn't get the chance to teach me his craft before he passed.
Watching these videos reminds me of him and I'm really glad I get to learn a little bit more about him through your videos. The book is looking incredible, excited for part 4!
I would've burned all of his books if i were you
I've been looking forward to seeing this!
I think the coolest thing about your channel is how clear it is that when you try new things, you're basing your ideas on an obviously intimate familiarity with your materials and their properties, so your experiments usually work out really well despite doing lots of stuff you've never tried before
And there seems to be a lot of foresight for when things haven't gone well, and he's already got clearances built in to solve those issues!
Ahh I can finally stop refreshing my homepage
Ah, but what about the next video? Better go back to refreshing!
I had never heard of Dune before stumbling across your first rebinding of Dune video. Since then, I've listened to the audiobook as well as thoroughly enjoyed both newer movies. You opened my eyes to a whole new universe of amazing characters and stories just from your love of a classic book and your desire to share that love with the world. Thank you!
Amazing! It’s the best feeling being able to introduce someone to a book and they really love it.
So happy to hear you enjoyed one of my favorite books. As a suggestion - don’t bother with any of the sequels. None of them come anywhere close to Dune imo.
The irony of a popularity resurgence (due to a new movie being produced) leading to this channel attempting to get more views to bounce off that popularity leading to you then bouncing off the channel itself, not the original work, to join the popularity.
@@auntielaura5 such a bad take
I wholly disagree with the statement that the sequels aren’t good! If you enjoyed the first Dune, please consider continuing with at least the next 5 originally written by Frank Herbert himself!
I will concur that the following books are different because they end up dealing with different ideas/problems, and eventually different characters, so they don’t follow the same thrilling “hero’s journey” type of adventure as the first. But Frank Herbert was a genius writer, and after reading Dune Messiah and Children of Dune it makes rereading the first book all the better due to you having additional context.
Tldr, Frank Herbert is great and if you liked the first book you should give the following books in the series a chance!
The bricks are my favorite recurring characters. They're invaluable.
I like that the bricks are wrapped. Mostly for protection, I'm sure. I use lead bars for weight as I glue my model airplanes together. Those are painted in epoxy paint for protection as well. My protection. 👍
@@ironbomb6753 was just about to warn you about the lead before i finished reading your comment lol.
@@LokiOdinssnn thanks mate! 🙂
You absolutely NAILED IT with that leather pattern, it looks amazing and straight out of a fremen camp!
I'll be waiting for the finale!
The best things about this video/channel that make it stand out from others like it:
1. Calm and clear commentary explaining all of the details of the process, allowing us to truly experience the process almost as if we were making the book.
2. No music - the silence and sounds of tools being used again adds immersion
3. Long format with time spent showcasing each step and scope of time and patience required to go through all steps- again adds immersion.
Overall, 10/10 video and video style. Much improved from the older videos you did without commentary. Absolutely nailed it and don't think you need to change anything to improve the format.
I've been struggling a lot with depression lately, and watching this series, this passion project, it helps a lot to pull me back and remember that there are things worth doing.
taking a moment to show off "the new neighbors" is very Bob Ross. Love that
OMG I'm in awe!! I set my alert just to catch this as soon as you published. I want to be good as you one day!!! That leather...I can only imagine your collection of leathers (I love adding leathers to my book covers)!! Your tools...your tools are so AWESOME!!!!!!!!! It's a necessary investment to do the job right, and efficiently, so one day I hope to have some of your tools, presses, binding weaver, etc. That leather braid.. I can go on and on and on! So you know I'll be re-watching this a few hundred times. My favorite part is letting things dry overnight and seeing results next morning. I really appreciate you show your dilemmas, issues, mistakes, etc. and how you fix them (even if it means re-doing)!!! That's a book maker's daily life...fixing and correcting. I love it all!!!
What you say about fixing things is totally true! And sometimes the waiting is the worst part, but the gratification is definitely an upside. Thanks for the lovely comments!
I spent 10 years as a young man in shoe and leather repair. Some of the skill sets overlap. Interesting and strangley nostalgic. Great video and audio production. If you doing all this work yourself, you deserve a standing ovation.
Yet another heirloom -- amazing, incredible work. I love how you manage to reflect the book's content in your bindings. Everything about this is perfect.
*All praise the Brick of Handiness*
Thanks for another excellent video!
For everyone who’s just seeing this merely passing by, stop, grab your popcorn, get comfy and watch part 1 then 2 then 3, and watch your anxiety melt away
Maybe not applicable to this project, but I love cover flaps that contain reference info for fantastical fiction. So easy to pull up a map or appendix without losing your place in the story!
Ohh that's a neat idea.
Excellent video. Molding the leather to the book spine with a tiny Crysknife was a nice touch.
Such amazing craftsmanship and bookbinding! You are an artist par excellence, my friend.
Thank you very much!
I only bookbind occasionally and without your tools, but I have learned so much in each of your videos that I'm looking forward to binding the hobbit for my brother now. If I could hit like a billion times I would! I've learned so much!
Dune book is amazing!
This video somehow became one of the things I had looked forward to most each day for the past month! Looking forward to that final part!
This is awesome. I'm totally impressed with the asymmetrical flap and the innovative use of neodymium magnets, including the kozo patches! If Frank Herbert was still living, your work here would be the copy he had on his shelf!
Beautiful Work Dennis, already looking forward to Part 4 and impatient to see the detailing and ornamentation for this beauty.
I think my heart may have stopped when the end-flap didn’t close, but that’s where your expertise came in; you knew exactly what to do. 😁🎉. Thank you so much for including us in this wonderful journey - you’re creating a piece of art dedicated to one of my favorite books. I love the aesthetic vibe you’re going for- this would be a sacred book, but the fremen wouldn’t have access to truly refined materials. I’m excited to see how you will decorate the cover. ❤️
Wow! Just wow! I've also been waiting patiently (impatiently?) for this installment, and will continue to wait for part 4. I love your attention to detail and your meticulous work to get it all just right! You are an inspiration!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
28:10 you under estimate us good sir! Given a 10 hour cut of this video we would still be with you, wonderful work
Been looking forward to this! Stunning work as usual!
Heck yeah! Been anticipating this one for far too long
Man, I binged all of these. The attention to detail, the artistic sensibility, the beautiful and interesting filming/editing, the thoughtful narration. I love all of it. Hope to see part 4 soon!
Nonmagnetic fingers?? That’s just the kind of post-Butlerian Jihad technology I’d hope for!
It’s so satisfying watching a master do their craft. It’s captivating
Please do Moby Dick next or The Count of Monte Cristo ORRRR Lord of the Rings
Excellent design choices for the diagonal flap abs circular elements. It perfectly compliments the design language of some previous version of the books covers and the anachro-futurist aesthetics as described in the novel.
A new Dune binding video! Praise the Kwisatz Haderach!
Literally just finished watching part 2 and this was uploaded straight after 🎉
Completely mesmerized by this series. Fantastic work, can't wait to see the finished result
Your videos inspired me to have a go at book binding and im hooked! Ive a long way to go but ive loved making the tools and learning some new skills.
Thank you for such amazing videos and i love the latest!
The addition of islamic features fits the book so well!
This is such wonderful work (bookbinding & videography), I cannot wait for part 4
Hi Dennis, well absolute exquisite work as always, really well worth the wait, can wait to see the end result, I do admire your infinite patience 👍
It is inspiring how you tackle such finicky parts of this process with calm and care. I would love to see a video where you go over some of your projects that have been scrapped or temporarily abandoned due to their problems, if you have any! It would be really cool to see some of the mistakes you've made as part of the learning process
32:37 shiiiit man that looks nice.
I absolutly love your paper covered weights, they are so beautiful
Thank you so much! They're starting to show some wear and tear though so I might re-cover them soon.
Fascinating! Meticulous bookbindery and ingenious craftsmanship ! ❤
The book looks amazing.
Also I really enjoy your narration explanation, your voice is nice to listen to
Thank you kindly!
I really like the idea of a bookmark made from a leather braid but the knot at the end is a bit big, a so called "mystery braid" could be better for this, as you don't actually cut the end of it so you have it the same thickness all the way through, and you can cut it into a more interesting shape as well.
Regardless of that, every video you seem to one up yourself and I really look forward to the final one in this serie.
Absolutely stunning! I'm yet again blown away by your artistry and skill. Can NOT wait to see this beauty finished! Also love seeing not only the things that go smoothly, but the clever troubleshooting you do when things need adjusted. The fixed hinges look just as flawless as the rest.
Been waiting for this! Beautiful! Thank you!
That trick with the washi hinge is so good! I have struggled in the past with similar leather projects, and this is gonna be so useful.
Thank you so much for your wonderful and detailed videos, I've learned so much and they are incredibly entertaining and beautiful!
I've done a few braids over the years, and there's not much that beats a simple knot for aesthetics.
Yayyy finally it’s here, can’t wait to watch it today :) thank you
This is turning into an incredible work of art. I can't wait to see what you're going to put into that circular recess.
Absolutely beautiful. Great job!
You and Chef Jean-Pierre are my favorite YT channels. Every time I see a new video I'm like a kid again waking up to watch Saturday morning cartoons. The book is looking amazing, and like everyone else watching, can't wait for that 4th video.
You're like the Bob Ross of book binding, your videos are so relaxing and enthralling at the same time. Well done sir!
Wow!! Absolutely beautiful!!can wait for the next video Dennis!
Have you ever watched the channel Nerdforge? She makes some amazing leather bound books. She doesn't do just books so you'll have to look through her video library.
Long-time viewer👍
love your vids
I love reading but never paid any thought to the binding process. Your channel feels me with awe and appreciation, thank you.
amazing series!! watching your videos feels very meditative and inspiring. thank you for sharing your expertise.
Absolutely masterful, Dennis. Thankyou for these wonderful videos - You can't judge a book by its cover but you can judge it's Binder - Cheers!
It's looking so beautiful! Also, your editing and cinematography are brilliant : D
Holy moly
subbed,
Thanks for sharing your craft with us.
Things made this way are very special.
Your videos are just so calming and satisfying to watch, I've learned so much!!
I'm so excited while waiting on part 4. Ive been reading Dune, which is a feat in itself for me, as i struggle with severe ADHD, and finishign a 200 page book is a lot in my current daily life. Right now im about 300 pages in, and look forward to reading more, frequently. So whether part 4 or finishing Dune happens first, im so happy to have them both to look forward to.
Absolutely incredible. Such beautiful work - thank you for sharing it with us!
Interesting. I imagine with all the waiting between drying you could work other projects through their steps? Is this a business or a hobby for you? Does UA-cam make up a majority of the objective here, or do you take Commissions?
Wow. Just incredible work.
As a handtool enthusiast I love that you skived the leather with a spokeshave! I'd never have thought to do that...! Thanks for such a pro tip.
I cannot believe how incredible this is looking. This book needs to go to a museum after this 😂
Absolutely love your videos. Thankyou been waiting for this one.
Love the design of the flap and the leather works really well with everything else
Very nice! One thing I might do is for second set of magnets is befor putting on the double sided tape to mark there places, is with a marking pen, put an x on each, so none get put in with the wrong polarity, pushing away, instead of pulling together after making them permanent in place.
I was very conscious to flip the magnets over from where they were stuck to the cover as I placed them into the flap. Reversing the polarity would have been very counterproductive!
That looks amazing. I loved watching you create that, and wish it was on my bookshelf!
This is beautiful work! Thanks for sharing the process in such detail and passing along your knowledge.
What exactly is the modification to the spokeshave you used for paring the leather?
I filed down the bottom of it to change the cutting angle, as well as regrinding the blade to match.
I was wating for this vid! such an amazing work, great filming as well, and such a gorgeous book!
Amazing! I rewatched the first part of Dune last night before watching the next movie and was wondering if I had missed the 3rd part of this series! Love a good coincidence 😁
This series helped me to get back to bookbinding. Thanks for your good work!
what the heck?! This is amazing!! I love that flap and seeing it just snap in to place at the very end was so nice.
Can't wait to see what you do with the cover!
Wonderful work done in a masterful way! Compliments.
Loving this series! There are so many books I would love to have this custom leather process done to.
amazing how many different uses you come up with for that press!
I think you should have added some adhesive to the magnet recesses, if the only thing holding them in is paper they'll rip through eventually
This is so amazing. I was waiting for part 3 to drop. You're a wizard, an absolute gem in the bookbinding world.
I was waiting for this video for the last 4 weeks or so. and now you are telling me I have to wait another 4 weeks to see the final piece!?
Great video!
It's looking amazing. I can't wait to see the final result. 👍👍
Impeccable workmanship of the book is complemented by the excellent production value of the video.
you are truly a master of the craft and im honored to live in an age where i am able to witness this kind of work so easily, what i wouldn't give to have someone like you to teach me!
I’m sure the author would have been so honored to have his work encased in such a beautiful binding and cover.
I'll never cease to be impressed by your artistry and creativity. You really captured my imagination especially with the leather choice and the cover flap. The integrated bookmark isn't something I've seen before and it really adds to the whole impact. Really excited to see the final result
Ok, how did you make sure you got the magnets right side up? You did not use a sharpie to mark top or bottom.
Book looks great so far. I would not have guess goat hide for the "sand worm" look.
In the event of an apocalypse, I hope several groups have a spot for you. We will need your talents and techniques in the dark ages to follow.
Looking forward to final episode.
Regarding the magnets: I was careful to flip them over from where they were sitting on the cover so as not to reverse the polarity.
@@FourKeysBookArts I saw you got it right. Was not sure how.
Look forward to more of you videos.
Yes, DUNE was one of my favorite books.
Amazing craftsmanship 👍👍
Fascinating series, it's so nice to see traditional crafts being kept going. Love your videos, thank you
I want to commission a book from you sometime!!! So well done
I’m way too invested in this series
like those ridges on the spine of the book, how u know its quality
It's gorgeous 🥺😲😍
Hello Dennis, thank you for letting us glimpse into the magic of creation which you are a master of.
I was so looking forward to this episode. It was riveting as well as healing.
With each step I was more fascinated and more at peace inside.
This tome will be dug up from hot sands one day in distant future, scuffed but preserved by the hot, desiccating air. Already, it is an artifact. The leather is alien in origin and looks hot to the touch. And the design is from a bookbinding school once taught on a different planet (and even there it is already found in ancient temples and museums only).
I see it full of sand. It is a masterpiece and I am so happy we can witness its creation.
Thank you, sir!
Fastest click I've ever made.
I cried to be honest, thanks!
