As a Madonna fan I found your analysis to be one of the most accurated and honest to be seen her. It was not just "oh just was terrible", "oh this is so sad", you explained why she was so bad. This is a professional analysis to me.
Madonna can sing, anyone who has seen her live can testify that, her bar is so high when she performs , this was just below what she wouldn't have wanted. Haters, don't forget she has the most successful tour revenue than any other female singer. LGVTQ love you Madonna, at least you dance and provide entertainment not just stand there or hide behind a piano like some other boring singers do.

Great review, very fair and informative. Lots of Madonna fans (myself included) have been left very disappointed after Saturday, and also confused as to how someone of her calibre can mess up so badly. Your analysis makes a lot of sense in shedding some light on that. Still love Madonna always and forever, but very sad to see her start to fail so badly.

As a promoter, I can honestly say she still sings better than 3/4 of modern artists out there, and she's been doing that for years. Give her a break
In his book, Madonna's brother said she was never fond of vocal training. However, he said she had to have vocal training for Evita and her voice never sounded better. Although after the movie was over, she didn't maintain that commitment to vocal training and her voice got worse as a result, according to him.

i think she was worried, too, and that was on her mind. i don't think that Madonna is "unlucky", but aging makes ppl cautious, & Mdna's been thrown from a horse, 2x, & had 2 stage falls.

The Brit Awards was from 2015. The little knot tied in front of her neck was tied too tightly that when her back up dancers pulled her cape, it pulled her backwards and caused her to fall.

Something similar happened to me once... And I have a darn good intonation. I still don't know what caused it back then but it was horrible I was off pitch a lot...on the inear it sounded right but when I took one earphone out, it sounded so different outside...I had no idea what to do^^ thankfully something like that never happened again.
i don't have no idea if a singer knows how to sing or not ,but in one art I agree with you 100% in her performance she sounds really that she is out of air and tries to stay on the surface of the water.. and interesting how you explain what can influence a live performance..but I have one question isn't there always a sound check because you said that in each place your voice sounds different ?? very good explication , with no drama professional in each second ..congrats

All really good singers, or just good singers, have had this happen to them, even when being paid big bucks. They've all been heavily criticised, and have risen up from it. Sometimes the pressure is just too big that you fall flat and no amount of money can prevent this. I agree, Madonna is only human and isn't prerfect.
Madonna is already a legend. Nobody is perfect all the time, Madonna is most of the time lol. People generating views based on hate and criticism. If you don’t have good things to say, just don’t do it. Good luck!
My idea is that there is autotune live with vibrato on. The autotune seems to be set to the wrong key/setting and that's why it sounds like crap. You can hear she's struggling real bad at some parts. Bummer...

The original is out there. Just watch the whole show. Search for "Eurovision 2019" and you'll get the video at the first result. How hard can that be.
I liked it and it was very interesting to listen to her and to watch the performance anyway. When your voice is unique and you look original, everybody is interested even when something's wrong. Nobody's always perfect. There might have been things we don't know about. I understand it. She was cool. She was sincere. Having a unique voice and look is much more important than always having a perfect performance.

Hi, thanks for the sincere and balanced analysis! I can see how a professional may "slip up" in their performance because of all sorts of reasons. From what I understand the money was paid for expenses so she actually performed for free, or just to promote her new album... Anyhow it did feel like she was not focused, a little tired and not in the mood. She also had people pressure her against performing in Israel and the contract was signed a few days before the event, so I guess that didn't help.

Maybe she has a big hearing problem too, I guess you cannot sing/ perform with hearing aid, but without will be difficult too.

I have seen some inears worn by the Artists in the competion. And the geman commentator said Madonna blocked the place for her rehearsals. So she should at last have had the possibilty to be well prepared. But there was also an interview where she - to me - made the Impression that she isnt the Madonna that I know from Videos and other interviews. For example she made the competitors to sing a line from her song Music. But it took the host next to her that sang "Music - makes the People - come to together." It wasnt Madonna who made the tune. And her Performance after that fit to that strange interview. Another sad Thing is - that a lot of ESC-fans werent that keen About Hearing Madonna - who´s Performance was btw delayed. One could realise that the production Team had Problems to fill the time untill her finally Performing.
The interview was unnecessary.
She had to RUSH backstage for her performance after that not to mention that details of contract were done last minute by organizers and that put extra psychological pressure on her because her performance was announced... I could also sense that, for some weird reason, there was negativity from the audience, too. Nevertheless I didn’t find the performance to be that bad. It’s MADONNA and she was there! POP LEGEND! Nobody will ever take her crown! 👑
The actual singing has always been way less of a priority for Madonna. Her main focus is the performance.

The performance was just so dull and uneventful that all focus was on the bad vocals. That guy rapper looked so bored and out of place.. it killed the Eurovision mood completely.
@Cc Cc Well, shock horror.. i have seen her in concert 27 times now. I don"'t understand what the structure of her life concerts have to do with this performance. The performance was dull as even most Madonna fans would tell you. No shame to it, everyone has their off performances, but because the performance was so dull the focus shifted to her vocals. And those were just really bad. That vocoder effect on future was cringeworthy. Took me straight back to the mid 2000's

Her voice sounded scratchy as if she were ill. When she sang Carpool Karaoke with James Corden she sang well, especially when she sang 'Don't Cry for me Argentina' a capella.
This performance was completely all over the place. Im a huge Madonna fan, but her singing was terrible. But again it could have been a pluthera of things... The corset, her nerves, ill, keeping up with vocal training, out of shape..... Regardless her new songs are too autotuned, especially the new song, 'Crave'.
I miss the old Madonna vocals prior to 'Evita'. Her vocals were rough in the 80s and 90s but she emoted such beautiful rawness in her voice.
I think her vocal studies while training for Evita destroyed her vocals. There used to have such beautiful color in her voice... It seems as if she is now continually thinking of her technique instead of allowing her emotions and texture of her vocals to shine freely.
Actually evita's training saved her voice cause she used to have this "baby voice" that was actually damaging her vocals. And crave is actually the most non-autotuned song that she has released this year, is the song where her voice sounds more natural than the others.
@@Royithox she had the "baby" voice with her first album. She started having a thicker voice with 'Papa Don't Preach' and 'Just Like A Prayer '.
If she stayed with the vocal tone from 'Erotica' yet broadened her voice, she would be playing a different ball game. I loved the grit and passion she truly evoked in that era. She seems to be more technical now rather than having such amazing color in her voice as she did in the 90s.
Speech level singing can completely change a vocalist's voice. Her range is better. The color just isn't there.
I have studied speech level singing for years. It is a good technique but one has to continually practice with a vocal coach to keep the technique at it's best. If she isn't, she may be fighting with her previous technique prior to speech level singing and her current training. Just a thought.
I disagree. The vocals she learned in Evita is the reason why she still has a career. Look at Gloria Estefan Adele Fantasia and Sam Smith . What do they all have in Common ...they needed vocal surgery for using their voice incorrectly and damaging it bc the layrnx is a muscle. Her vocals I. Evita especially for me waltz for Eva and che is beautiful. She was singing music not written for her voice and for her to work that hard is a testament to how she is. She's an old fashioned showgirl. She does it the old fashioned way...she earns it. So I want her to go back to Patrick Leonard who makes her voice shine .

I don't agree with many things you said (Eurovision is amazing!) but this was very interesting and educating.
You lost me in the first minute when you dismissed the contest out of hand. How do you know the singing is bad if you haven't listened in many years? That's a bit disrespectful of wonderful performers such as Duncan Laurence, Tamara Todevska and Roko Blažević. Did you take time to listen to these acts as well as hole-picking Madonna? Thought not.
She is american and like we all know here in civilized Europe that americans don't care about the facts. And as for madonna she has allways been a bad singer. No talent for singing at all.

Madonna is a living musical artist/legend who has accomplished more in her life than most and appears to be genuinely happy with her children, her friends, her career, and caring about the world. She pulled her self out of a possibly bleak existence in her hometown and transcended herself and is always evolving. That's what people do. At least the enlightened ones. So how bout we try not to add to the negative dialogue of the world of celebrating a superstar's one bad day(this performance) and celebrate her and all the other artists who continue to create and make all of our lives just a little better(or for many of us ALOT better). Look at all the greats of our time meeting a tragic demise(Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Whitney, Prince, George Michael, Elvis) and many others. Yet here Madonna stands-defiant and accomplished. Obviously she had a problem with her voice. Obviously a remastered version of the performance has been uploaded as it should be. Concerts/performances not live that are to be televised always do 2 shows and air the best performance. We all want to be/show our perfect self-so why can't she? Peace!!!
Good and interesting insight from a professional. I've just listened to You Must Love Me and Sooner or Later at the Oscars (before Auto-Tune was used) and even though she was a bit off-key in the beginning because she's usually super nervous at live TV gigs that was superior compared to the performance at the ESC. She was was bad live during the Who's that Girl Tour and the Blonde Ambition Tour but she improved with the Girlie Show and her best Tour Vocals were the Drowned World Tour and the Re-Invention Tour.
AutoTune has been in use since the 80s, so plenty of time for "You Must Love Me"
@@riinak7212 Autotune was launched in 1997 and at this time and the following years it was only used in studios and for productions. Live autotune started somewhere in the mid - 2000s. And as Madonna don't hold the rights for the You Must Love Me performance it wasn't autotune besides the performance was in 1997.
@@Datenmeer Autotune was developed in the early 80s initially as software for a petroleum company to find deposits of oil underground and was later that decade adapted to change the pitch of singers' voices. I will post a link below this. It was being used in concerts as early as the beginning of the 90s, if not earlier, but the difference was that it wasn't supposed to be noticed. It was only later when Cher's megahit "Believe" became popular that Autotune's "roboticising" effect became popular. At first the producers tried to claim it was a vocoder to keep it a trade secret but soon word got out about the new software and it began to be used everywhere. I don't remember the "You Must Love Me" performance so it certainly could've been enhanced with autotune.
The link I was going to display now contains incorrect information. It used to reference singers of such high standard like Reba McEntire but that information has been changed or buried now. Oh well. The only thing I may change is that AutoTune may be more late-80s, but as someone into vocal production, I assure you, it was there.

Remember she had that voice lessons from Evita.
She did 2 rehearsals both dancer and stairs. The first on playback with the original álbum version. The second was live, but even in that snipped i did notice that she was little bit tired even on before show.

She had more than enough time to practice if she wanted to like all of the contestants, she just chose not to practice with them. I don't know if she had private rehearsal i remember that at some point the stage was "closed" for the press so perhaps that was Madonna rehearsing. Also i doubt she had hearing problems since none of the other acts had any problems with the sound. I mean even Serhat from San Marino sounded better than her live

Great report!!!!! Hello there, just for info. She did plenty of rehearsals and she had blocked the hall for ours. So they said. I never was a great Madonna Fan, but to bash her like that......after many years, where she made Millions of people happy. It's a disgrace to our human behaviour towards others. Wether she deserves it or not. And yes, she was definitely out of breath.

First you say you dont like eurovision because of the bad singing quality. Yet you make excuses for Madonna singing in exact the same venue, same conditions same evening, same technicians. Don't make excuses. She has just lost it and should have lip singed. Most of the singers did nt sing out of key by the way. Quality has improved immensly. You should watch it again.
She did the worst performance that evening, almost all contestants sang perfectly that evening, no one used auto tune because it's not allowed for them. Most singers in recent years were actually quite good, most of those who can't hold it are eliminated in the semi final (with few exceptions).
The thing most annoyed me was she seemed like she had no will to be there.
There's no excuse for it, she was arranged to perform at least 6 months prior.
One of the appeals of Eurovision to me is the fact that all vocals has to be live, you can cover it up with backing singers (which aren't always visible on stage) but you are limited to up to 6 people in a performance (including the contestants themselves) so there's a limit on how much you can cover it.

Eurovision is not like Superbowl in the USA. No commercials at all in many countries.
Spot on. Clearly she is better than this vocal. And she did sound nervey, shakey breathing vocals, uncomfortable with the stairs and in-ear monitors that may have not provided her the level of hearing she needed. I also am worried about her health and her vocal health in particular may be a polyp.
Few things about this. She would of rehearsed, so I doubt she would of gone ahead with the performance if it sounded like that in rehearsals. There is footage from the audience which sounds much better than the tv version. So is it possible that auto tune pulled her voice the wrong way?
Madonna performed Like a Prayer at the Met Gala last year and it was in tune and beautiful!

The quality of Eurovision has got a lot better over the last decade. There are very few novelty acts these days.
