Some of the moves in this video just look very painful to me. Especially the unchoreographed parts. Has anyone talked with Norma about this? Were the original dancers just tougher?
Yeah, there's some "muscle" and some fighting going on in some of the dancing. Norma has told me on several occasions that she still feels pain from some of the air steps they did, most notably the one where she hangs on to Billy Ricker's waist and gets swung around. II will ask some dancers who danced with Frankie and the old timers what they felt...

IMHO the dancers were 'tougher' but there's been more modern swing dancers that were pretty close:
