- We tour the Scandlines bordership in Puttgarden and we get exclusive access to the Copenhagen Scandlines ferry between Gedser, Denmark and Rostock, Germany.
Visiting the bordershop to stock up on spirits, beer, and soda is a standard part of Danish culture. We've been a number of times, but got the chance to film behind the scenes during our journey this time.

It's so fantastic for me, who works at Scandlines (Mostly on M/F Prins Richard and M/F Prinsesse Benedikte, at Rødby-Puttgarden) to see a video of our company and that great pleasure we have to have happy passengers onboard - And to show how big and overwhelming our ferries is!
The rotor sail is really cool. You wouldn't think at first that a rotating pillar would provide any forward power at all. It even uses power to spin, but creates an effect known as the Magnus effect for propulsion

When I lived in Greece, a lot of the ferries in the Med/Ionian Sea were, older Danish ferries, out of commission.
Total weirdness to be on a ship, with all the signs still in Danish, next to Greek translations 🤣🤣

I grew up in Greenland late 60 and 70,my father knew all the captains. This was for seafreight from Denmark. We always visited the ships and vice versa. To see all theese handsome men in their uniform, bring back so many memories 🌹🙏💕 Wauw what a beautiful video. Thank you SO MUCH 🤗
In Denmark, our ferries are a big part of our culture, so its really amazing to see a video like this were people go and film them and experience them.
And the neat thing is, every ferry has its own charm. They might have been build the same, but they have very much there own personality.
Some time ago I got a big dream of mine to come true, when I went and got a tour of my favorite ferry, the MF Frigg Sydfyen.
Shes an older lady, but she is my favorite and just like you said in the video, you never think about how much goes on, on a ferry.
If you ever get the chance to travel between Fyn and Sønderjylland (Bøjden-Fynshav) make sure you book your tickets for the ferry Frigg Sydfyen.
I bet you will find her lovely even tho she isnt as new or big as the one you were on, in this video.

When I grew up in the 60s and 70s we had ferries across the Storebaelt (bridge was not built then), there were two different lines, one for trains and one for cars, The trip only took about an hour, but the loading and unloading would take time too, so everybody planned for a couple of hours of relaxing..
In fact, back then we had a lot more ferry traffic all over the country.
I have lived in DK all my life and I went the first 35 years without going to a bordershop. It's very much a "Car-people" place :D If don't have a car or a drivers licens this is not the place you go.
Buy a small trailer car people will start to approach you for a run
Nice and exciting video about scanlines, especially because you usually do not get to those places.
There are also border shops if you drive from southern Jutland to Germany. It is called scandinavian park, but the prices are not as good as they have been because much has increased after Corona.
It was pretty amazing getting to see so much, a fun experience that I’m glad we could share.
I talked to a lady from Flensburg and she said those bordershops like Scandinavian Park and Fleggaard are not actually that cheap, and in fact Germans don't go there because they are more expensive than normal German supermarkets. Danes still go there because all their favorite foods are there, and you don't pay deposits on the cans and bottles. Truly a Danish 'hobby'.
By the way there is also tax free shopping on the ferry between (for instance) Helsingør (DK) and Helsingborg (Sweden) that especially the Swedes love, because alcohol is heavily taxed (and state controlled!) in Sweden. That is a funny sight to see. As soon as the boat leaves the territorial waters the shops open and people will stack trolleys full of beers or other alcoholic drinks.
Imagine if you had moved here in the early 90's. No "nightmare bridge", but instead a 2 hour ferry trip between Zealand and Funen

Hi :) When I was employed by Maersk Line, we did have regulary fire drills. So everyone onboard did know what to do in case of fire or other reasons to protect the ship or leave the ship. It was back in the first half of the 80'. Some times i do miss that time when i was a sailor. :)
modern boats are so clean, its not the picture you get from Hollywood :)
Another great video. Now I know why my colleagues from Copenhagen is always raving about the Border Shop. Me, being in Jutland, we just drive to Germany and shop in regular German shops as they're much cheaper than the border shops. But we DO stop at the border shops as well, because of tradition :D EVEN if the prices are far too high.

The ferry that sails as a hospital ship with The Mercy Ships Fleet is The former Great Belt ferry "Queen Ingrid".
Contact scandlines and have her do the Helsingor - Helsingborg boats. Some of them have 100% battery power.

Yeb they do. Back on the old boats (Kronprins Frederik & Prins Joachim) that sailed there used to have far more cabins to sleep in, and we'd have some of the customer service people sleeping on board as well. Nowadays, it's only those few rooms that houses the essential crew + supervisor, and the rest comes and goes with their daily shifts :b
we usually enjoy the wine tasting machines and stands at the bordershop :P
That rum was pretty cool even though it's triple the price of an entry level rum
I like your good taste when it comes to the music you use in your video's - But remember to pay some of your taxes in Denmark :D Totaly agree with the Leffe beer - one of the best! You should also try Pilsner Urquell from tehe Czech Republic. Thanks for yet a informative and experience video.
Thanks, sometimes I spend a while trying to find the right song. I’ve definitely had Pilsner Urquell, it is good! We went to Prague back in 2004 and you could get it in the us pretty easily. I’ve even got some glasses :). Good stuff!
Luckily, at last - Denmark is now financing and building a new tunnel for rail and cars, to put an end to the ferries, which may open in my time also, as now 74? In my time we had to "buy" a ferry each time going to Belgium for a "small walk" of 100 km during a weekend.
And as a Long Distance walker all over Belgium, I of course also tasted Leffe (But I never found the actual Brewery from lacking signs. A road-sign pointed to Leffe, and we looked, till we met a similar sign pointing the other way!) + a hell of a lot of other fine beers! I walked the "100km Death March" from Bornem 16 times, so I did - waste a lot of time on ferries till the new Storebælt Bridge was opened and that limited the passing to some 20 minutes. Hardly the time waiting for the ferries to sail.

As always a splendid video. I’ve been to the bordershop before when i lived at Lolland, and you always run around trying to figure out how much - or more likely how little - you have to buy grocerys for for the rest of the month.
Yeah, Leffe is a fantastic beer. You should try taste beer from Indslev brewery on Fyn. They’re available around the country as well. Maybe Brugsen or Kvickly. They only make wheat beer - including their wheat porter - and it is GREAT.

Jäegermeister was my first getting drunk and i didn’t touch it again for 20 years until i found out that it tastes great if you mix it with rød sodavand i think that combo is called a “Brandbil”

I love ferry rides, there's something very relaxing about them too bad so many ferries are gone now because of all the bridges everywhere. There's nothing wrong with slowing things down a little on trips and clearing your head and thoughts a bit, I think, rather than all the rushing and less patience.

Ayy, I work on that ferry :3 nice video-- I just wanna point out, while the crew on board does seem to have a rather low turnover rate, we do hire a decent amount for the catering and retail department yearly :b

The Leffe Noel is nice. Gouden Carolus is nicer. Skål. How about a trip to Greenland? That would be mindblowing! A real adventure.
That would be amazing, future adventure goals :).
The workers being there in 3-4 day shifts is mostly due to the logistics. Gedser, Rødby and Putgarden are very much in the rural regions a bit far away, and they need higher educated workers who are likely not living anywhere near the ports.
It is a solution to a problem that exist in multiple sectors, like having a local physician in outskirt places where none wants to settle and do not want to have a 4 hour commute every day.
That is true, at one point I think we had one guy who came all the way from Bornholm xD

Bad memories from my gymnasium youth where we used the ferries onboard taxfree shop (pre EU commen market) the ferry as a 'warmup' before gymnasie parties... you could get inanely drunk for 30kr.

6:00 you are looking at trouble. The reasons teenagers the last 20 years or so drink way tooooo much. Sugary strong alcoholic shots is just trouble trouble. Teenagers should only be allowed to drink beer and you will see less of them drunk in bushes asleep 😈
For decent food you ALWAYS go on the Danish boats irrespective of Gedser/Rostock or rødby/puttgarden..the German chefs seem to have less respect for the food and the clients. Strange with the menus being identical, but there are significant differences in perceived quality…..

Fair point, but what I noticed was how 'cotton paper' was being sold as 'sustainable' which it is not.
As you know we danes do not believe in gods we like the christian traditions and a good sermon the wonderfull hymns and so on but do you have a religion ????????? You dont have to answer (: (:
