    See this off grid turbine producing peak power: • Off Grid Reaper Wind T...
    In this video I show how I built a home wind turbine for my property. This is an efficient DIY turbine that's built for low wind environments and is perfect for off grid living. It has a 12 ft (3.7 m) diameter rotor driving two 12 coil/16 pole axial flux air core (ie coreless) permanent magnet generators with a power potential of up to 3 kWp in a ~30 mph wind stream. Start up speed is around 2-3 mph, cut-in is around 5-6 mph. In an area with a mean annual wind speed of 11 mph (5 mps) or higher, this turbine will produce 500 kWh+ of energy every month with a mean output of 800-1000 watts, nearly enough to take an avg home off the grid (see links below).
    The follow-up performance videos show over 2600 watts in a 26 mph wind stream. You can find them on my channel or at the end of this video. Pay attention to the controller AND anemometer display beside it. Refer to the wind power equation to compare the output and efficiency to what science says it should be:
    P = π/2 * r² * v³ * ρ * η
    where r² = rotor radius squared in meters
    v³ = wind velocity cubed in m/s
    ρ = is air density in kg/m³, typically ~1.23 kg/m³ but will vary slightly with temp and elevation
    η = combined efficiency of the turbine (blades) and generator, typically between 30-45%
    No wind turbine will ever be more than 59.3% eff. It's called the Betz limit. Google it for more info. But using my turbine specs to calculate theoretical output and compare it with actual peak output documented in the follow up video, we get this:
    Turbine rotor diameter = 12 ft, or 3.65 m, radius = 1.83m
    Wind speed = 26 mph, or 11.6 mps
    Mean efficiency = ~32%
    P = 3.1459/2 (1.83² * 11.6³ * 32%)
    = 1.57 (3.35 * 1560.9 * 0.32)
    = 1.57 * 1673.3
    = 2627.06 watts
    Be sure to check out the build article link above to learn more about how to build a wind turbine and get the plans.

    This video is for inspirational purposes as much as it is for informing. If you have questions about something you see and you don't want to download the plans and step by step build guide that are available at the link below, then ASK. I'm more than happy to help. But throwing a fit and cussing at me because there's music instead of narration ISN'T going to inspire me to help you. It will cause the opposite. This would have been a very long video with drawn out scenes or a long series of videos if I had to explain everything in a script, and most would not have the patience for it and the algorithm will pick up on the lowered retention, and less of you wonderful people will have seen it. Hence the purpose of the build guide, to compensate. If you're here because you're serious about building a turbine, don't waste the opportunity.
    Here's a follow up video of this turbine producing 2600 watts @ 24 mph: ua-cam.com/video/Ef5nDuJD7kA/v-deo.html

    I’ve seen thousands of those videos. Also about VAWT turbines but this one is really craftsmanship. From the moment you are started welding, i knew that you can make this project to a success. I'm a welder too so nothing stands in the way to make such a wind turbine myself. In the summer I have enough power from my 15 300w solar cells but in winter it's hard to get enough power. Such a wind turbine would be an excellent plan for having power in the colder months of the year. Thanks for showing your project is such details and I will study every videos in the description until I have conquered all sets of possible failures I will make.
    The only thing I miss is a safety feature to shut down the turbine of turn the blades in another direction when wind blows at tornado force. It's something I will consider when building one myself. Futhermore, thanks for sharing your project.

    This was awesome from start to finish. Much props! One thing I really, really appreciate is how you take those little extra steps to make every part of your device look professional, like it came off the shelf at Home Depot. You even made every single weld disappear. Every aspect of the build, all the way up to mounting the turbine was the model of efficiency and professionalism.
    I am definitely buying these plans, and I know it will take me ten times as long as you (in real time), but I hope I can make it with the same quality as you obviously do. I need to buy a small welding rig, though. And I might try to find an alternative to wood for the blades.
    WELL DONE!

    • @JamesBiggar
      @JamesBiggar  3 роки тому +5

      Don't waste your time with a wood alternative for the blades - you're not gaining anything other than a non-recyclable product. Wood core fiberglass blades have the best strength to weight ratio compared to foam core or solid fiberglass blades without compromising too much flex (semi-flexible blades are more efficient than rigid blades), they'll last decades with the proper surface finish (like Minwax polyurethane or fiberglass cloth) and they're easier to recycle. Wood is still the go-to choice for most small plane props specifically for these reasons, although they tend to be more rigid due to the higher dynamic loads the rotor experiences (see Culver Props, Aircraft Spruce, Tailwind Props, etc). If it's a good choice for a human trapped in a tin can flying thousands of feet above ground, then it's definitely suitable for a wind turbine (and actually is the method of choice for industrial turbines as well, although they use Balsa wood with fiberglass materials and the blades are hollow). If you feel you must avoid wood for whatever reason, then I recommend using CMS Magnetic's blades. DO NOT waste your time with chopped up PVC pipe like other DIY'ers use. Not only does pipe not have a proper airfoil profile to harness the wind in a way that creates 'lift' as efficiently as possible (it's one of the least efficient methods), halved PVC is too flexible and will not withstand the wind load on a turbine of this size without using ridiculously thick wall pipe which increases rotor weight and drag or by installing cable or rod reinforcement which again adds more weight and drag. Weight and drag are the enemy.

      @@JamesBiggar what are your thoughts on using a good birch plywood? I figure with a bit of CAD work it wouldn't be too hard to break it down into slices which could be cut out with a jigsaw, then once glued up you would be much closer to the finished shape, making it probably realistic to use a belt sander to get the finished size from there.

    Great music, love the steel plate/hammer symbols.
    Electrolytic compound (dielectric grease) between the dis similar metals like the copper terminals and steel screws, can avoid issues I believe.. but I'm no expert.

      Are you really an Electrical Engineer? How did he come up with the design of the coils (turns- size of wire) and picking the magnets to generate the voltage? Seems he has a 24 volt system. What's the formula for picking the magnets and size of coil for a given amount of voltage wanted?

      @@hmax1591 Unless he had already built this type before, or went off a set of exacting plans from someone else, he would have determined the output after construction - there are too many variables to knew exactly what it would produce.

    You know what I like about this. This isn't some smart Teenager kid using his dads workshop to build a 20W wind turbine from some quick fix ceiling fan. You did it properly, with good music, and you documented the whole thing. Well done to you sir.
    On top of that, making the blades yourself was brave.

    Very well done, James. It is clear that you have put a great deal of thought into this, and have a lot of skill. I'm particularly impressed with your choice of axial flux, and your design of the furling tail.
    One mistake, however. By casting your guy anchors inside a plastic bucket, you are dramatically reducing the friction ("stiction") between the concrete and the ground. I thought that you were simply using the buckets as a mould and would remove them after compacting the ground around them, and before pouring the concrete. Depending on the angle of the guy wires, the upward component of the tension would tend to pull them out of the ground.

      Hugh Piggott and Chris Olsen. Chris has pretty much eliminated his online presence due to some hate from a few bad characters, so it's a bit tough to find his work these days. But google Hugh Piggott, he has a wealth of knowledge to share.
