I tried not tempering a 5160 knife I made. What I found was that as I got it near sharp, the burr would chip off and leave a jagged, dull edge behind. I took the handle back off and tempered to straw color and the problem was solved. Granted, that blade was bit finer edge geometry than you would want on an axe. That. Alone may make a big difference. Lots of variables there, I suppose. Thanks for sharing! I have really enjoyed watching you work.
Doubt somebody would ask if it was tempered after they had been hit with it!
I enjoyed the video great tutorial thanks for upload !
No problem 👍
I got some great info from this that's not necessarily related to hawks, but generally useful for all my projects. Thanks!
Took me a while to figure that one out, was a DOH moment
I use 5160 on herb choppers all the time and I temper at 450 on a cookie sheet in the oven😂
Started the same way.
Enjoying your videos. Thanks for taking the time to make them!
Farrier's rasps not a high carbon steel? I've heard they're not as tough as a bastard file, but don't know what alloy they actually are.
very nice! now don't look for that hawk in my truck next time I'm out.
Thanks for another good video. I enjoyed it and learned some new things.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for the content. Blurp
As always, thank you for your service
Chamfered edge?
I tend to break the edges of most of my work
