5/27/21 A1C 5.7, weight 329. Started keto and then quickly transitioned to carnivore. The only thing I binged on was doc Cywes UA-cam videos. 9/27/22 A1C 4.8, weight 179. Maintaining -and working out to build muscle. My wife has gotten similar results. #doccywesroxx !!!

I have been following you and I am so thankful that I have found you! I have struggled with diabetes since 2008. At first they put me on metformin and about killed me. I also have Chrones disease. I had constant diarrhea on metformin! They told me to keep taking it and my body would adjust to it. I went for 148 to 104 lbs. in 3 months. They also said as long as you keep your a1c below 7.0 that I would be fine.😢. I stopped taking their medication and just did a diet off and on since. I have started a keto/carnavore diet since finding your videos and also I have made an appointment with you and can not wait to get started. Oh, and I do not want to lose weight. I am 5' 11" 118lbs. Thanks again for telling us the truth about our health.
The analogy with the legally acceptable blood alcohol levels is brilliant and brings into focus the misguided handling of diabetes by 99% of medical practitioners. It's a shame that most doctors think they are doing their jobs by reading blood labs wherein abnormal values are highlighted for them (and anyone with an IQ greater than a cauliflower) in that famous yikes column. Then their pharmaceutical reps then instruct them as to medication protocols. Kudos to Dr.Cywes for actually being what a Dr. is supposed to be, but rarely is.

Just a subtle nuance to this, yes raised blood sugar damages blood vessels but high insulin on its own does too, evidenced by increased strokes and heart attacks in metabolic syndrome way before the blood sugar goes up. High insulin raises blood pressure by inhibiting nitrous oxide which dilates blood vessels and by directly causing sodium retention in the kidney. It also has a growth hormone effect on blood vessels and causes smooth muscle hypertrophy and it is pro inflammatory on its own without raised blood sugar. How much of vascular damage is caused by raised blood sugar and how much by raised insulin is not really known, but raised insulin alone can do plenty damage! Yes get the HbA1c down to 5.2 but also the fasting insulin and C Peptide down--they are both achieved in the same way, so one could argue that if HbA1c is 5.2 then insulin will be down too.
Good summary but there our clinical evidence is not supportive of these hypotheses. Love your physiologic answer, but high insulin w normoglycemia appears to be cardioprotective v low insulin hyoerglycemia. Neither is a healthy state
I have discovered that, for me, the Carnivore diet worked for less than 6 months. My blood sugar wouldn't go below about 100 first thing in the morning - I was also doing OMAD. I had good success with Atkins, S. Beach and Keto for 17 years. The Carnivore regimen has helped me lose an additional 40 pounds, but then I stalled so I am back on a modified Keto program and doing better. I love your posts, Thank You.
OMAD may be giving you a too-large bolus of food at one time. You might do better on 2MAD. Too big of a “hit” in an already unhealthy body may be too much to take. An occasional OMAD day for IF purposes might be OK once or twice a week, but be too stressful on a daily basis. This is my hypothesis-best to ask Dr Cywes if he thinks it’s valid.
This is the sad truth about the profession of healing, they need to keep the issue to go on so that they have a means for livelihood. It’s their family’s survival is at stake. No patients no income. I have read and listened to any diabetes related media I could get hold of it. From deferent even opposite view from meditation to medication camp. And I can say I found your views , voice of reason. I am sure you’re pursuing some financial agenda as well and it’s your absolute right to do so . I’m 56 years old and I am dealing with diabetes for over 26 years. My father passed in worst way you can imagine because of that and I don’t want my kids see me like my father in my final days- you know. Anyway I finally had some breakthrough in November 2021 by listening to RIP Dr. Sara Hellburg. I stopped eating any carbs right away and I never looked back. Lots of things happened since then. I lost almost 50 lbs of my 240 lbs weight. No insulin injections no jardiance no BP med or Statin. No need CPAP. Still taking metformin. Walking 5 miles a day. Hiking like a goat or biking 50 miles if it is not raining. I’m in Seattle by the way. I could convince my insurance give me Dexcom g6 which I love it. My average Glucose for 90 days is 114 and lastLab A1C was 5.7 thanks for informing us.

Type 2 diabetes symptoms include increased thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, fatigue, slow healing of cuts and wounds, and numbness or tingling in the hands and feet.

I’ve been a family nurse practitioner since 1998 and worked in cardiology for 16 years and would consistently see diabetic patients with “good” HbA1c with recurrent vascular disease. Frustrating when advising their PCPs that their numbers should be lower from a nurse practitioner went over well lol . I wish I had known you back then ❤

Dr. C. Beginning HGA1C 6.5 I have been ketovore since June 2, 2021 (HGA1C 5.6), and basicly carnivore since Jan 1, 2023 less than 10 carbs a day, 80/20 most days. I do use a clilantro pesto for chelation because my biomet hip replacements are leaking. I do intermittant fasting most days with 1 or 2 meals a day. I am rather sedate due to atrial fib. I am 70 yo, 267 lb, 5'10". I had Hep C ( just finished Mavyret) with complication of cirrhosis of the liver and an enlarged spleen. My blood sugars are 140 to 170 when I wake up and I check them again in the evening and they average between 103 and 121. I have been obese since childhood and was very active most of my life. I am wanting to get at least some of this weight off because I met a brilliant young doctor who will do my hip refurbishment if I can get my BMI below 35. I have tried to contact you but I am in Idaho near Stanley.

I started a ketogenic diet Jan 1st, my blood sugar was 263. Today it was 124. I have been trending more carnivore during the week and keto on weekends. It works!

I have been searching for this explanation of what might possibly be going on with my insulin resistance and blood sugars for about 4 year's. Of course this is only my feeling's based on symptoms, while I don't quite understand all this it still makes perfect sense to me. Wow a1c of 5.2 as healthy,😊that’s the new continuing goal always awsome information I am new to all of this and trying to tell others we realy need to be honest and truthful with ourselves about the amount of carbohydrates we eat daily to understand the unknown hidden danger with high daily suger numbers unfortunately the nutritionist says 45 to 65 grams carbs per meal 3 times a day and snacks in between meals I do not agree way to many carbs,had an endocrinologist tell me here is a pill script no one can live this way and not feasible with so much high carb foods time to beat the odds for all of us🎉

I don't remember which brand, doesn't matter. It says something like "balance what you eat, drink and do". Not that you're advocating drinking sugar drinks, you advocate the opposite. AMEN! I am only 3 minutes in....I will stay on Metformin and a GLP-1 agonist and I will be as long as I tolerate them...Hopefully insurance will keep covering. My A1C is 5.0, was above 7 before July. It tears me up what you said about the first doctor because my mom got praised for an A1C below 7 and the endo acted like it was the best thing ever...well she had a heart attack, clotting disorder and never woke up from bypass surgery. I know she was sick and it was a long battle but I get mad about their endo (my dad is a t1d with the same endo).
I am a T2Diabetic on Mounjaro currently on 2.5. I have not been on Mounjaro long enough to have an A1c, but I notice that glucose average is mid-80s. I controlled diabetes with low carb/higher protein diet to 6.2 and saw such good numbers coming from GLP1s that I asked doctor about starting Mounjaro. I have an interesting question... I use the Keto Mojo... I tested a few times today to see how quick the numbers move... sooo... I woke up with a reading of .7mmol ketones... they went up until noon at which point they were at 1.5 mmol.... at 2 pm when I tested again... 1.1mmol.... I've had nothing other than water and salt plus a black coffee earlier in the day... what might have happened to cause that to go down?

Many videos out there that talk about tweaking the diet to keep losing weight. You don't mention doing intermitant fasting or longer fasts. Do you? You obviously have more weight to lose, are you still losing is what I would ask myself. Higher fat lower to moderate protein carnivore diets with fasting is shown by some. Does Dr. Cywes not do telephone consults?

I am on Keto. Started 3 weeks ago. My problem is i wake up at 110 but by the time i shower and dress. My sugar spikes to 250+. Any advice how to stop these morning spikes.
I’m so confused. I don’t think i have type 2 diabetes but I can’t control my blood sugar when I eat carbohydrates. Even a piece of fruit will send my blood sugar up to 300. But my insulin level is 1 and my c-peptide is 0.3. My insulin resistance score is 2. I don’t have a weight problem and I don’t have any of the markers for type 1 diabetes. What is going on with me?
When was the recommended A1c and blood glucose levels set and have they ever been reviewed. What's to say they are correct. So many things that we eat have had a complete 360 turn around as the whether they are good or not.
I got my A1C results from today's blood draw. Six months ago it was 6.6 and my Dr. recommended metformin for me, which I put off to decide next week. Today it shows 5.5... Is metformin still indicated, perhaps for other reasons? I will discuss with my Dr next week. I started intermittent fasting and carb reduction January 3rd 2023. It works beyond my best expectations. Also, my triglycerides went from 183 to 76 in six months.
Thank you so much. I am now nearly one year on my health journey. Still on metformin (I asked for it after my CGM showed too high numbers). Obviously on keto, mostly carnivore and intermittant fasting. How much should I excercise? I know that this can't be answered without an individual assesment. But it would be interesting to show some cases and see how much of an impact excercise can make. I don't like to excercise and I have very little time, so having numbers would be a great help.
He said "regular" exercise. So I would think that a little bit each day would be better than running 5 miles once a week. I do 15 min on my indoor bike at a high resistance and then lift some weights until my arms can't do any more. It's not a huge thing but it's better than nothing.
What about when you've been ketovore / carnivore for 3 full years, and can't reverse your T2? And your doctor (who happens to be Dr Cywes!), and LADA, MODY and T1 have been ruled out?
Dr Cywes - my low carb keto doctor in Western Australia is happy that my ha1c is 7.5% and says that is normal for someone 72 years of age type 2 insulin dependant down from 140 units to 10 since may 2022 ?? Is he correct that hba1c goes higher as you get older - thanks
I am panicking and need help! This video resonated with my problem. I am (almost) 66yo female, eating low carb, then Keto for the past 3+ years. Diagnosed T2 when 54yo. Used Metformin for 10+ years. Reversed the T2 with diet and fasting 3 years ago. Everything was great for 2 1/2 years - now the Hba1c is creeping up..5.0 to 5.4 to 5.7. AM BGLs up to 120s (from 85-95)!!! BMI in high-normal range after losing 20+ lbs - relatively stable. Fasting insulin < 5. Diet is stable, no carb creep, if anything I eat fewer carbs more fats. Don't know what to do and am very confused with conflicting info that I hear/read. Stimulate insulin production - seems counter-intuitive after 3 years trying to do the opposite? Is there a safe way to do it? I am in Greece, and would love to have a consult. I did try a FB message once, but did not get a reply. Obviously no insurance and I would appreciate knowing cost. Thank you for any assistance.
What does a little bit of sugar in the gut mean if I fear insulin suppression? Table sugar? Been omad , under 10g carbs for 3 yrs. Brought A1c diwn to 5.1. since carnivore A1c up to 6.2 😢. Zero sugar or processed foods for 3 yrs. I am so at a loss . Do i add veggies back in?

I've been eating low carb/keto since 2018 when I was diagnosed with t2 diabetes. I was doing well but my morning bg is almost always over 100. It's so frustrating.
I have that lamp. They are also finding new uses for Metformin and think it might be linked to longevity. I have been carnivore, then low carb (under 20) this past month and stalled out at 32lbs lost and my blood sugar never getting consistently below 100 EVEN on Metformin 1k bid. So, I'll give you a call (you are in my town) and maybe we can run some blood work and see what is going on and get me on the road to better blood sugar and unstall this weightloss.
I'm thrilled all low carb medical doctors don't do everything the same. It means you have a brain. Haven't used CGM but used ketone and glucose meter for a few years. A1C while losing weight 4.7. During maintenance 5.0. Haven't checked in a while but have added some berries and one fifth of banana to my breakfast 4 times per week with no increase in weight.

Hi Dr Cywes. Your thoughts on the lipoprotein insulin resistance score used to determine insulin resistance. I came across this and was able to find the calculation algorithm? Any idea what a score of 55 means for a 72 year old male with ascvd? Perhaps you can address this test in a video, if you haven’t already.
I used to be type 1 here, but due to a poor diet, I'm now out of control. Carbohydrate diets are simpler to stick to. I had no choice but to use the gluconize brand. check if it works
I kept having higher than expected AIC tests. Finally got glucose testing device and generally stick my finger every other day. I found “hidden” carbs and items that wo7ld spike glucose, including caffeine. I am a long-time dedicate coffee drinker now doing decaf, and using an electrolyte/potassium product from Dr Eric Berg for general hydration. Also found certain things that suppress glucose/insulin, such as apple cider vinegar 1st thing in AM for dawn effect, and before all meals. As a result, my glucose levels have dropped, and A1C has to come down - having 6 month bloodwork in a couple of weeks. Also, when I kept getting higher than expected A1C, I found UA-cam info that helped identify the “hidden” sources using searches such as “Cywes A1C” ans other doctors, including Eric Berg, Paul Mason, Ken Berry, Sten Ekberg. All said essentially the same thing, with lots of comments of excellent results using their info. Seeing that (same thing, many positive results) led me to try what they were saying, and I am very happy with results I have gotten. Good luck and God Bless!
Hi, I have an issue that two GPs refuse to address and will NOT refer me to an Endocrinologist. Not only will they NOT refer me but all of the Endocrinologists in my area refuse to see or talk to me without a referral. This SUCKS. Since 2021 my fasting glucose numbers have been between 86 including through the 90s and as high as 117. When my GPs do the fasting glucose test and the numbers are higher than the recommended 77 to 99 and I point this out to both of them their comments are hey you're NOT diabetic, don't worry about the fasting glucose numbers. My A1C is 4.8 which I understand is great but my fasting glucose numbers are what concerns me. They my GPs are ONLY concerned with A1C and have no regard for the fasting glucose numbers at all PERIOD. I have reduced my carbs significantly and also my sugar intake drastically, but I am struggling to get my fasting glucose down in the 80s. I test every day and in fact I changed GPs because I was NOT satisfied with his opinions and now my new GP says don't even bother to test. I am 5' 8 and I weight 150 lbs., very poor muscle tone and the sad part is I CANNOT get any GP I go to, to take any of this seriously. DO NOT EVEN MENTION UA-cam DRS to ANY doctor you go to, I already made this mistake, and they get HIGHLY OFFENDED if you mention you heard anything from UA-cam Drs, they tell me maybe your UA-cam DR should be your GP and not me. The worst mistake a patient can make is that you are taking advise from anybody on UA-cam. I did not mention I am 68 years old. So, I do not know how many GPs I will have to go through to find one that takes my concern seriously. I agree with you 100% BUT no doctor I have gone to in my area agrees with YOU. John in Ohio

Fantastic video. I have been on a keto diet for 7 years now and while my bloodwork is vastly improved, I cannot seem to get my A1C down (currently 7.6) My fasting insulin however is 3.9. If I use the HOMA-IR formula, I am considered healthy. But am I really?
Regarding the "going for a run" metaphor, how useful is blood donation? I know it will lower a1c, at least temporarily, but is a1c just a marker or is blood glycation bad enough in and of itself that lowering it through donation is of value?
Is there a similar situation with carbaddiction as with fetal alcohol syndrome ? Son with rage issues raised macrobiotic and was vegan for years. 43 now.
It may be easier to lower A1C if you can lose weight. I Am under weight and been on keto for 9 months and my A1C is still pre diabetic. No change at all.

But wouldn’t it be effective in reversing metabolic condition and kidney impairment if there were complexities with diet modifications and medication wasn’t helping? Curious to know if this could be a serious solution for a severe issue.
what about managing weight if you're already lean and really don't want to lose weight as a result of low carbs? my a1c jumps from 5.6-5.8 and fasting blood sugar always seems to be around 74-79 for the past year or so. i will admit i am inactive with the occasional walks. i do notice if i aggressively drop carbs the weight starts to drop off quick.
I found out I was prediabetic, 5.7, went on a low carb diet, and my Lipid Panel looked really good after a few months but my A1C went to 6.5. Dont know why.
Hello Dr. I enjoy your videos. I have been low carb for a year keto for 6 months my A1c dropped from 5.8 to 5.6 I checked it again 6 months after going keto and it went up to 5.9. I have beta thalassemia minor could that have anything to do with my results?
If you cut out the carbohydrates we are told you have to eat fat as your energy source, but then you are stuck between a rock and a hard place because although cutting out the carbs puts your blood sugar in a good place it's been traded for a total cholesterol of 405. The only conclusion I can draw is, to be healthy you have to chose between Statin and Insulin :-(
Dr Cywes and other have a LOT of info re cholesterol and statins that I found very helpful. Can search UA-cam for “Cywes cholesterol” and “Cywes statins”. Others include Drs Ken Berry, Paul Mason, Nadir Ali, Eric Berg. You will be surprised and happy with what you find.
Watch Paul Mason's 3 part video series on cholesterol on the Low Carb Down Under UA-cam channel. Then tell me that LDL is bad. Your LDL has probably improved significantly.

Tried an Abbott CGM - it was poorly calibrated to blood glucose level measured with a stick. I was disappointed. A question, how do I get access to your research that you mention so often. Would very much like to read it and in particular see the images.
Used CGMs when on a trial through UCT. Loved them, However Discovery will not cover these if you Type 2 Diabetic. If you Type 1 no problem covering the costs.
I wore a CGM for 2 weeks and got a hbA1C of 5.3. went for a physical a week later and had blood work done and my hbA1C was 6.1. I am so confused about that discrepancy.
I think what he's saying is that he got very different results within a week. Hgba1c shouldn't swing like that in such a short amount of time. I'd say one of those results was not reliable
hba1c can be influenced by the lifetime of your red blood cells, if your blood cells are healthy and last longer than the ~3 month average then you may get a slightly inflated hba1c over your actual continuous glucose.
the CGM does not tell you an A1C, it gives and average. My 90 day average on my dex was 6.1 and my A1C was 5.0. A1C is ~90 day average (probably a bit lower)

Wouldn't it be nice if insurance companies would cover GLP-1 agonists for people with A1C above 5.2 instead of 6.5 or whatever they use. I bet most obese patients would qualify then :(
I don't eat any carbs. Only meat, butter, some eggs, water. I've been in ketosis for months. Why is my fasting glucose sometimes over 100, like 107 this morning? Okay, so maybe my insulin is so low it isn't enough to clear the sugar from my bloodstream.
Same problem. Been keto/carnivore Last 18 months. A1c of 5.1 and 5.3. Resting insulin of 5. But still higher glucose levels. Never above TOTAL 20g carbs, usually way below 20.
Funnily enough, Dr Ben Bikman is seeing this as well, so he was conducting a study with Levels to look into the phenomenon. I only just learned about that the other day (and the interview where he talked about that was from a year ago), so I haven’t had a chance to see where that study is going!
Probably the dawn phenomenon. Check your glucose other times of the day and see if they're not lower. Have you had an A1c and fasting insulin checked? This would give you a better picture.

I have been following you and I am so thankful that I have found you! I have struggled with diabetes since 2008. At first they put me on metformin and about killed me. I also have Chrones disease. I had constant diarrhea on metformin! They told me to keep taking it and my body would adjust to it. I went for 148 to 104 lbs. in 3 months. They also said as long as you keep your a1c below 7.0 that I would be fine.😢. I stopped taking their medication and just did a diet off and on since. I have started a keto/carnavore diet since finding your videos and also I have made an appointment with you and can not wait to get started. Oh, and I do not want to lose weight. I am 5' 11" 118lbs. Thanks again for telling us the truth about our health.
The analogy with the legally acceptable blood alcohol levels is brilliant and brings into focus the misguided handling of diabetes by 99% of medical practitioners. It's a shame that most doctors think they are doing their jobs by reading blood labs wherein abnormal values are highlighted for them (and anyone with an IQ greater than a cauliflower) in that famous yikes column. Then their pharmaceutical reps then instruct them as to medication protocols. Kudos to Dr.Cywes for actually being what a Dr. is supposed to be, but rarely is.

Just a subtle nuance to this, yes raised blood sugar damages blood vessels but high insulin on its own does too, evidenced by increased strokes and heart attacks in metabolic syndrome way before the blood sugar goes up. High insulin raises blood pressure by inhibiting nitrous oxide which dilates blood vessels and by directly causing sodium retention in the kidney. It also has a growth hormone effect on blood vessels and causes smooth muscle hypertrophy and it is pro inflammatory on its own without raised blood sugar. How much of vascular damage is caused by raised blood sugar and how much by raised insulin is not really known, but raised insulin alone can do plenty damage! Yes get the HbA1c down to 5.2 but also the fasting insulin and C Peptide down--they are both achieved in the same way, so one could argue that if HbA1c is 5.2 then insulin will be down too.
Good summary but there our clinical evidence is not supportive of these hypotheses. Love your physiologic answer, but high insulin w normoglycemia appears to be cardioprotective v low insulin hyoerglycemia. Neither is a healthy state
I have discovered that, for me, the Carnivore diet worked for less than 6 months. My blood sugar wouldn't go below about 100 first thing in the morning - I was also doing OMAD. I had good success with Atkins, S. Beach and Keto for 17 years. The Carnivore regimen has helped me lose an additional 40 pounds, but then I stalled so I am back on a modified Keto program and doing better. I love your posts, Thank You.

OMAD may be giving you a too-large bolus of food at one time. You might do better on 2MAD. Too big of a “hit” in an already unhealthy body may be too much to take. An occasional OMAD day for IF purposes might be OK once or twice a week, but be too stressful on a daily basis. This is my hypothesis-best to ask Dr Cywes if he thinks it’s valid.
This is the sad truth about the profession of healing, they need to keep the issue to go on so that they have a means for livelihood. It’s their family’s survival is at stake. No patients no income. So we really have to be our own advocates by learning how to manage it the right way. Thank you very much for keeping us informed. You are sacrificing a lot.
I have read and listened to any diabetes related media I could get hold of it. From deferent even opposite view from meditation to medication camp. And I can say I found your views , voice of reason. I am sure you’re pursuing some financial agenda as well and it’s your absolute right to do so . I’m 56 years old and I am dealing with diabetes for over 26 years. My father passed in worst way you can imagine because of that and I don’t want my kids see me like my father in my final days- you know. Anyway I finally had some breakthrough in November 2021 by listening to RIP Dr. Sara Hellburg. I stopped eating any carbs right away and I never looked back. Lots of things happened since then. I lost almost 50 lbs of my 240 lbs weight. No insulin injections no jardiance no BP med or Statin. No need CPAP. Still taking metformin. Walking 5 miles a day. Hiking like a goat or biking 50 miles if it is not raining. I’m in Seattle by the way. I could convince my insurance give me Dexcom g6 which I love it. My average Glucose for 90 days is 114 and lastLab A1C was 5.7 thanks for informing us.

Skin tags also indicate insulin resistance. Best tools....either a glucose monitor or CGM

I’ve been a family nurse practitioner since 1998 and worked in cardiology for 16 years and would consistently see diabetic patients with “good” HbA1c with recurrent vascular disease. Frustrating when advising their PCPs that their numbers should be lower from a nurse practitioner went over well lol . I wish I had known you back then ❤

I take Berberine for my blood sugar. It seems to help. No other Diabetic meds. A1C 5.7😊

I have been ketovore since June 2, 2021 (HGA1C 5.6), and basicly carnivore since Jan 1, 2023 less than 10 carbs a day, 80/20 most days. I do use a clilantro pesto for chelation because my biomet hip replacements are leaking. I do intermittant fasting most days with 1 or 2 meals a day. I am rather sedate due to atrial fib. I am 70 yo, 267 lb, 5'10". I had Hep C ( just finished Mavyret) with complication of cirrhosis of the liver and an enlarged spleen.
My blood sugars are 140 to 170 when I wake up and I check them again in the evening and they average between 103 and 121. I have been obese since childhood and was very active most of my life.
I am wanting to get at least some of this weight off because I met a brilliant young doctor who will do my hip refurbishment if I can get my BMI below 35.
I have tried to contact you but I am in Idaho near Stanley.

Wow a1c of 5.2 as healthy,😊that’s the new continuing goal always awsome information I am new to all of this and trying to tell others we realy need to be honest and truthful with ourselves about the amount of carbohydrates we eat daily to understand the unknown hidden danger with high daily suger numbers unfortunately the nutritionist says 45 to 65 grams carbs per meal 3 times a day and snacks in between meals I do not agree way to many carbs,had an endocrinologist tell me here is a pill script no one can live this way and not feasible with so much high carb foods time to beat the odds for all of us🎉

I don't remember which brand, doesn't matter. It says something like "balance what you eat, drink and do". Not that you're advocating drinking sugar drinks, you advocate the opposite. AMEN! I am only 3 minutes in....I will stay on Metformin and a GLP-1 agonist and I will be as long as I tolerate them...Hopefully insurance will keep covering. My A1C is 5.0, was above 7 before July. It tears me up what you said about the first doctor because my mom got praised for an A1C below 7 and the endo acted like it was the best thing ever...well she had a heart attack, clotting disorder and never woke up from bypass surgery. I know she was sick and it was a long battle but I get mad about their endo (my dad is a t1d with the same endo).

I have an interesting question... I use the Keto Mojo... I tested a few times today to see how quick the numbers move... sooo... I woke up with a reading of .7mmol ketones... they went up until noon at which point they were at 1.5 mmol.... at 2 pm when I tested again... 1.1mmol.... I've had nothing other than water and salt plus a black coffee earlier in the day... what might have happened to cause that to go down?

Many videos out there that talk about tweaking the diet to keep losing weight. You don't mention doing intermitant fasting or longer fasts. Do you? You obviously have more weight to lose, are you still losing is what I would ask myself. Higher fat lower to moderate protein carnivore diets with fasting is shown by some. Does Dr. Cywes not do telephone consults?

I’m so confused. I don’t think i have type 2 diabetes but I can’t control my blood sugar when I eat carbohydrates. Even a piece of fruit will send my blood sugar up to 300. But my insulin level is 1 and my c-peptide is 0.3. My insulin resistance score is 2. I don’t have a weight problem and I don’t have any of the markers for type 1 diabetes. What is going on with me?

When was the recommended A1c and blood glucose levels set and have they ever been reviewed.
What's to say they are correct. So many things that we eat have had a complete 360 turn around as the whether they are good or not.

I got my A1C results from today's blood draw. Six months ago it was 6.6 and my Dr. recommended metformin for me, which I put off to decide next week. Today it shows 5.5... Is metformin still indicated, perhaps for other reasons? I will discuss with my Dr next week. I started intermittent fasting and carb reduction January 3rd 2023. It works beyond my best expectations. Also, my triglycerides went from 183 to 76 in six months.

Thank you so much. I am now nearly one year on my health journey. Still on metformin (I asked for it after my CGM showed too high numbers). Obviously on keto, mostly carnivore and intermittant fasting. How much should I excercise? I know that this can't be answered without an individual assesment. But it would be interesting to show some cases and see how much of an impact excercise can make. I don't like to excercise and I have very little time, so having numbers would be a great help.

He said "regular" exercise. So I would think that a little bit each day would be better than running 5 miles once a week. I do 15 min on my indoor bike at a high resistance and then lift some weights until my arms can't do any more. It's not a huge thing but it's better than nothing.
Walking 15 minutes after meals is really good for your blood glucose levels.
But what are the side effects of metformin…….is it worth the risk of the pharmaceutical?
That is up to you as an individual. Inositol and berberine are options

Dr Cywes - my low carb keto doctor in Western Australia is happy that my ha1c is 7.5% and says that is normal for someone 72 years of age type 2 insulin dependant down from 140 units to 10 since may 2022 ?? Is he correct that hba1c goes higher as you get older - thanks

I am panicking and need help! This video resonated with my problem. I am (almost) 66yo female, eating low carb, then Keto for the past 3+ years. Diagnosed T2 when 54yo. Used Metformin for 10+ years. Reversed the T2 with diet and fasting 3 years ago. Everything was great for 2 1/2 years - now the Hba1c is creeping up..5.0 to 5.4 to 5.7. AM BGLs up to 120s (from 85-95)!!! BMI in high-normal range after losing 20+ lbs - relatively stable. Fasting insulin < 5. Diet is stable, no carb creep, if anything I eat fewer carbs more fats. Don't know what to do and am very confused with conflicting info that I hear/read. Stimulate insulin production - seems counter-intuitive after 3 years trying to do the opposite? Is there a safe way to do it? I am in Greece, and would love to have a consult. I did try a FB message once, but did not get a reply. Obviously no insurance and I would appreciate knowing cost. Thank you for any assistance.

Excess protein - gluconeogenesis.. glucose storage in the muscles - Exercise is critical for me, with a meat & eggs carnivore lifestyle. The importance of releasing insulin from time to time is something I have heard you discuss over the last while and I am wondering if a bit of full fat yogurt or a handful of organic blueberries maybe once a week would suffice? Thoughts?

I have that lamp. They are also finding new uses for Metformin and think it might be linked to longevity. I have been carnivore, then low carb (under 20) this past month and stalled out at 32lbs lost and my blood sugar never getting consistently below 100 EVEN on Metformin 1k bid. So, I'll give you a call (you are in my town) and maybe we can run some blood work and see what is going on and get me on the road to better blood sugar and unstall this weightloss.
I'm thrilled all low carb medical doctors don't do everything the same. It means you have a brain. Haven't used CGM but used ketone and glucose meter for a few years. A1C while losing weight 4.7. During maintenance 5.0. Haven't checked in a while but have added some berries and one fifth of banana to my breakfast 4 times per week with no increase in weight.

Hi Dr Cywes. Your thoughts on the lipoprotein insulin resistance score used to determine insulin resistance. I came across this and was able to find the calculation algorithm? Any idea what a score of 55 means for a 72 year old male with ascvd? Perhaps you can address this test in a video, if you haven’t already.
I used to be type 1 here, but due to a poor diet, I'm now out of control. Carbohydrate diets are simpler to stick to. I had no choice but to use the gluconize brand. check if it works

There are A1C kits available at drugstores and Amazon.
I kept having higher than expected AIC tests. Finally got glucose testing device and generally stick my finger every other day. I found “hidden” carbs and items that wo7ld spike glucose, including caffeine. I am a long-time dedicate coffee drinker now doing decaf, and using an electrolyte/potassium product from Dr Eric Berg for general hydration. Also found certain things that suppress glucose/insulin, such as apple cider vinegar 1st thing in AM for dawn effect, and before all meals.
As a result, my glucose levels have dropped, and A1C has to come down - having 6 month bloodwork in a couple of weeks.
Also, when I kept getting higher than expected A1C, I found UA-cam info that helped identify the “hidden” sources using searches such as “Cywes A1C” ans other doctors, including Eric Berg, Paul Mason, Ken Berry, Sten Ekberg. All said essentially the same thing, with lots of comments of excellent results using their info. Seeing that (same thing, many positive results) led me to try what they were saying, and I am very happy with results I have gotten.

Hi, I have an issue that two GPs refuse to address and will NOT refer me to an Endocrinologist. Not only will they NOT refer me but all of the Endocrinologists in my area refuse to see or talk to me without a referral. This SUCKS. Since 2021 my fasting glucose numbers have been between 86 including through the 90s and as high as 117. When my GPs do the fasting glucose test and the numbers are higher than the recommended 77 to 99 and I point this out to both of them their comments are hey you're NOT diabetic, don't worry about the fasting glucose numbers. My A1C is 4.8 which I understand is great but my fasting glucose numbers are what concerns me. They my GPs are ONLY concerned with A1C and have no regard for the fasting glucose numbers at all PERIOD.
I have reduced my carbs significantly and also my sugar intake drastically, but I am struggling to get my fasting glucose down in the 80s. I test every day and in fact I changed GPs because I was NOT satisfied with his opinions and now my new GP says don't even bother to test.
I am 5' 8 and I weight 150 lbs., very poor muscle tone and the sad part is I CANNOT get any GP I go to, to take any of this seriously.
DO NOT EVEN MENTION UA-cam DRS to ANY doctor you go to, I already made this mistake, and they get HIGHLY OFFENDED if you mention you heard anything from UA-cam Drs, they tell me maybe your UA-cam DR should be your GP and not me. The worst mistake a patient can make is that you are taking advise from anybody on UA-cam. I did not mention I am 68 years old.
So, I do not know how many GPs I will have to go through to find one that takes my concern seriously.

Fantastic video. I have been on a keto diet for 7 years now and while my bloodwork is vastly improved, I cannot seem to get my A1C down (currently 7.6) My fasting insulin however is 3.9. If I use the HOMA-IR formula, I am considered healthy. But am I really?
Regarding the "going for a run" metaphor, how useful is blood donation? I know it will lower a1c, at least temporarily, but is a1c just a marker or is blood glycation bad enough in and of itself that lowering it through donation is of value?

It may be easier to lower A1C if you can lose weight. I Am under weight and been on keto for 9 months and my A1C is still pre diabetic. No change at all.
What is your opinion on low/normal a1c, normal fasting glucose with elevated insulin?
Sounds like you're insulin resistant but your body is able to control the level of sugar now, insulin should go down if you keep carbs low.

But wouldn’t it be effective in reversing metabolic condition and kidney impairment if there were complexities with diet modifications and medication wasn’t helping? Curious to know if this could be a serious solution for a severe issue.
what about managing weight if you're already lean and really don't want to lose weight as a result of low carbs? my a1c jumps from 5.6-5.8 and fasting blood sugar always seems to be around 74-79 for the past year or so. i will admit i am inactive with the occasional walks. i do notice if i aggressively drop carbs the weight starts to drop off quick.
You won't lose too much. Esp if you are comfortable eating fat
I found out I was prediabetic, 5.7, went on a low carb diet, and my Lipid Panel looked really good after a few months but my A1C went to 6.5. Dont know why.

I have been low carb for a year keto for 6 months my A1c dropped from 5.8 to 5.6 I checked it again 6 months after going keto and it went up to 5.9. I have beta thalassemia minor could that have anything to do with my results?

If you cut out the carbohydrates we are told you have to eat fat as your energy source, but then you are stuck between a rock and a hard place because although cutting out the carbs puts your blood sugar in a good place it's been traded for a total cholesterol of 405. The only conclusion I can draw is, to be healthy you have to chose between Statin and Insulin :-(
Dr Cywes and other have a LOT of info re cholesterol and statins that I found very helpful. Can search UA-cam for “Cywes cholesterol” and “Cywes statins”. Others include Drs Ken Berry, Paul Mason, Nadir Ali, Eric Berg. You will be surprised and happy with what you find.
Watch Paul Mason's 3 part video series on cholesterol on the Low Carb Down Under UA-cam channel. Then tell me that LDL is bad. Your LDL has probably improved significantly.

Tried an Abbott CGM - it was poorly calibrated to blood glucose level measured with a stick. I was disappointed. A question, how do I get access to your research that you mention so often. Would very much like to read it and in particular see the images.
Used CGMs when on a trial through UCT. Loved them, However Discovery will not cover these if you Type 2 Diabetic. If you Type 1 no problem covering the costs.
I wore a CGM for 2 weeks and got a hbA1C of 5.3. went for a physical a week later and had blood work done and my hbA1C was 6.1. I am so confused about that discrepancy.
A1c is a 3 month measurement.. 2 weeks is not enough data
I think what he's saying is that he got very different results within a week. Hgba1c shouldn't swing like that in such a short amount of time. I'd say one of those results was not reliable
hba1c can be influenced by the lifetime of your red blood cells, if your blood cells are healthy and last longer than the ~3 month average then you may get a slightly inflated hba1c over your actual continuous glucose.
Get a full metabolic panel. 1 number doesnt tell a story
the CGM does not tell you an A1C, it gives and average. My 90 day average on my dex was 6.1 and my A1C was 5.0. A1C is ~90 day average (probably a bit lower)

Wouldn't it be nice if insurance companies would cover GLP-1 agonists for people with A1C above 5.2 instead of 6.5 or whatever they use. I bet most obese patients would qualify then :(
I don't eat any carbs. Only meat, butter, some eggs, water. I've been in ketosis for months. Why is my fasting glucose sometimes over 100, like 107 this morning? Okay, so maybe my insulin is so low it isn't enough to clear the sugar from my bloodstream.
Same problem. Been keto/carnivore Last 18 months. A1c of 5.1 and 5.3. Resting insulin of 5. But still higher glucose levels. Never above TOTAL 20g carbs, usually way below 20.
Funnily enough, Dr Ben Bikman is seeing this as well, so he was conducting a study with Levels to look into the phenomenon.
I only just learned about that the other day (and the interview where he talked about that was from a year ago), so I haven’t had a chance to see where that study is going!
I think if pp is low, no worries, BG must always below 130, if below 130 always every thing is good
Probably the dawn phenomenon. Check your glucose other times of the day and see if they're not lower. Have you had an A1c and fasting insulin checked? This would give you a better picture.
