I started watching the TV show "Yellowstone" and it started to get me into the cowboy culture. Long story short, I now own 5 cowboy hats and I do wear em in a small town in BC, Canada.Sometime people do stare but most of the time they ain't paying too much attention or at least they hide it very well. I told my boss about this, and he said "at least you ain't wearing a dress and insisting your pronones, who cares what they think?". Oh, and I am Asian btw.

Same here man. I always had a few nice hats and wore them periodically through the year. I’d wear my straw hat everytime I hunted and felt once in a while. After watching Yellowstone, it restored my love for hats and now I own 8 hats lol. I wear them all the time. I’m not a cowboy either I just have always love western wear since I was a kid

I am a cowboy hat wearing almost everyday here in the Netherlands. Dutch culture 'dictates' not to stand out to much, so sometimes people try to give me a hard time because i wear a cowboy hat and therefor stand out. I never cared and wear my hat whenever i want and feel like it 😊
As for the rules, i only care about the 'never put your hat down on the brim' rule and the 'don't wear a hat indoors' rule.
    Nice video 😊

I bought my first cowboy hat since i was a teenager. last Wednesday. Just a 3x Beaver felt silverbelly. Didn't want to spend the $500 until i was sure i liked how i felt / looked in it. Now i think i love it and may buy a couple more to keep on rotation. Recently started wearing boots again as well and found when I wear the look I act and feel a certain way, confident, cool, authoritative., put together.

Cowboy hats are PURE AMERICANA!!! If you go out wearing one and don’t even think twice about it one seems to exude natural confidence. You come off as a man who is strong willed and sticks to whatever he does and will finish a task no matter how hard. It’s American exceptionalism in the form of a hat. I get dudes ask me all the time don’t you feel weird like people are staring at you and I say no it’s quite the opposite it’s more like the pretty woman who are looking. Also it can’t hurt to walk with a little swagger a la Raylon Givens!

Grew up wanting to be a cowboy. My dad wore cowboy hats. I did a little as a kid. Where I lived. If you wore a c hat, it would draw attention and teasing. So the culture I lived in. It wasn't that accepted. At 40 I moved to Washington. East Washington. Cowboy culture is alive and well out here. Not predominantly, but it's here. I started buying hats once I got a place where I could get horses. Now I own 5 acres and have 2 horses. I have probably 8 cowboy hats. I'm obsessed with them. Wear one everywhere I go. Except my job that doesn't go with my uniform. When I go home to Michigan. I still wear one. I get looks there or " howdy tex" comments. But idc. Cowboy hats are part of me now

I live in Colorado and it is not as prevalent to wear a cowboy hat here. My grandfather was raised on a ranch but ended up starting a construction company and did not ranch later in life. He still wore cowboy hats all the time I was around him. I never really got into wearing them and honestly was not into cowboys or the old west much. However, within the last year I really started diving into western movies and I have blasted through a ton of them. It’s probably my favorite genre of movie these days. Westerns, even some of the ones made in the 30s and 40s are better entertainment then most the stuff being made today imo. I have not watched Yellowstone so can’t comment on that but it seems to have driven a lot of people toward owning a cowboy hat as well so bravo. I have always had great respect for ranchers, cowboys, etc. (alot of my extended family are still ranchers) but I recently decided to get a cowboy hat and am searching for one now. Hoping actual cowboys don’t hate me too much for wearing a cowboy hat since I have never even been on a horse tbh. I’m not exactly a city slicker either considering my hobbies (hunting, fishing, shooting sports) and background in excavation. I really just have great respect for cowboys and people who carry on their traditions and I hope not to besmirch the tradition by wearing it but to be a reminder of the good people who have wore them so very long. There is a deep rich history in it that has been glossed over or outright ignored by the public schooling system and I hope to reclaim the tradition in my family that my grandfather had. As you said in this video, there may not be a whole lot of people who will continue to uphold the traditions of wearing a cowboy hat and I think it’s more than a fashion statement to me.

I’ve been riding horses in the classic western style since I was a kid, and started wearing cowboy hats when I first started to compete. I now wear them and other similar wide brim outdoor hats for practical usage while doing K9 Search and Rescue work. They are wonderfully practical when built out of the right material for the climate and work you are doing. Just acquired a Mexican Fan Palm hat which is waterproof to the point where it can be dunked in water to cool your head while working, which in the west where I live, where it is regularly over 100 to 110 and humid in tbe summers, this is incredibly valuable. I also need the hat to be durable enough to push through thorn briars and juniper brush and stop the ticks from raining down on my head. I wouldn’t be without a hat while working outside, it has saved me from burns, heatstroke, injury and tick bites many many times. I highly recommend them to anyone who wants to protect from the elements, or for those who want to try a new style. If you can, find a hat shop and try on lots of different shapes. The different styles can really look different based on your face shape and each person has styles that express their personality and style better than others. You can also get a hat custom shaped to you, if you can find the traditional western hat shapers.

I own five and rotate through them all the time. A couple of thoughts to add to what you’ve discussed:
    1) a cowboy hat is part of a western style - do you need to own a ranch and herd cattle just to prefer a western style - no….but some will think you should. If you like the style and you like cowboy hats…..wear what makes you happy.
    2) buy quality - your points are valid…a cheap hat will collapse under use and weather conditions. Ranchers and rodeo folks wear high quality hats because they will survive the stress. One of mine is an 8x (mid quality) and it has survived for me for over 20 years, and it’s not even top of the line quality. Be willing to invest in a good hat and it will last forever (and can be reshaped and revamped when it’s necessary). Knowing how to actually care for your hat is critical in lengthening its life.
    3) Think through and research what shape and style you like. Not every crown shape is good for every face. There are lots of shapes for crowns and brims….research, compare, and try different styles on until you find what you like.
    4) A possible negative - a hat looks best when paired with proper boots, pants, belt and accessories. Not that you have to have all of that to wear one, but a solid, complete look makes a cowboy hat look good and not out of place.
    5) In some places you WILL attract attention……I got tons of looks walking around in New York City……..SO WHAT. It’s your life, live it like you want to. No one bought you that hat and no one pays your bills.
    6) Hat etiquette - you are right…..etiquette is extremely important to know and will often get you noticed more than the hat will itself. My father’s old school rule of thumb…”if I can wear my boots, I can wear my hat, with the exception of at church, at the dinner table, or when being introduced to someone”.
    7) Hats provide an opportunity to further accessorize and refine your style. Hats can have pins, stickers, hat bands and lots of other stuff. Heck, the Richard Petty feathered hat band, circa 1970s and 80s, is even making a comeback down here in Texas now. Pick out what you like (some folks are minimalist - I tend to fall into this category) and customize your hat to your style.

Yeah there was no such thing as a cowboy hat when the settlers/colonizers first arrived in America... they wore the type of hats they came from Britain and France wearing, which wouldve been bowlers/derbys, homburg, top hats, bi/tricone hats etc etc
The Stetson “Boss of the Plains” which is considered the OG cowboy hat didnt release until in 1865.

The hat don't make you a Cow Boy the word originated from white farm hands addressing people of to do things that don't want to do on a ranch or farm. I wear the hat for its use the history and culture of people who help build this country
