I love that all of the gameplay has to logically make sense to you like an actual role playing game (like when you're explaining that we're not just standing face to face, we're running through the city). I'm the same way. I really get into these type of games.
Very nice run through! Also the glass dragon, random interjections from Jen, and Firefly quotes are always welcome! (That's right... I saw what you did there.)
I was thinking from the start that Shadowrun Crossfire's game mechanic would apply awesomely to the Firefly universe, so I laughed out loud at "I aim to misbehave" :D

One question about the resolution at 30:23. As a player, am I able to play my cards, generate all the damage and then allocate it to cover all steps on an obstacle, or am I forced to complete each step as I play the cards?
you have to be able to defeat all the steps of an obstacle from left to right. the full proceedure is: 1) play all the cards you're going to this turn, assigning them to specific obstacle cards 2) do whatever special abilities to cards give (this usually has nothing to do with the obstacle that the card has been assigned to) 3) tally up all the damage that all the cards assigned to an obstacle will do. Treat this damage as one large pool. Start spending all the damage in this pool to defeats steps of the obstacle, going from left to right. Stop when you get to a step that you can't defeat with what's in the pool 4) do this for any other obstacles that had cards assigned to them 5) discard your cards, and then the obstacles fight back! :)
***** Thank you for the quick reply. Having 1 pool of damage types makes the game easier than I thought it is based on that "fight" because in the video you managed to clear steps as you were playing them. Thanks for another great runthrough.
The only limitation is that the rules have you process one obstacle at a time. Most of the time that's not relevant, but in the extended video was an obstacle that lets you do one level of damage to another obstacle. In that case you couldn't first do part of the damage to obstacle 2 (to get to the tough part), then defeat obstacle 1 to do another level to obstacle 2 and then continue assigning the rest of the damage to it. Not sure if the rules are explicitly trying to prevent that kind of combo thing or if they just want to prevent players from getting completely confused and losing track when dealing damage.
First, thanks for making this video! I watched a bunch of your videos to decide which games to get recently, and this is my favorite of the ones we got. Second: Watching this video again helped me figure out a rule I was playing wrong that was making the game way harder than it should have been. Correct way, as shown in your video: in a two player game the crossfire cards do not come out the first or second ROUND of EACH SCENE. For some reason, when I read the rules and mission cards I thought it was saying the first round of the first two scenes because there were three scenes, so we were flipping WAY more crossfire cards than we needed to. Thanks again, Rahdo! Keep up the great work!
Whoa, are you sure? Can you tell me where you see this clarified? I have always played it as the first two rounds of the game, so Crossfire cards continuously flow from then on out!
How embarrassing is it to think "this could really use a reference card" throughout the whole game and watching this video is the first time I notice there actually is one on the back of the role cards. Something inside me seems to refuse the notion that cards can have info on both sides. Also, I'm pretty sure it's meant to be pronounced "new yen" (Nuyen just looks fancier and oddly enough, SR uses the regular Yen symbol ¥).
"This game usually goes less than 10 rounds" I just got this and I think I died on the third round my first play thorugh. lol. I'll get some upgrades soon though so it's all good.
I am happy to find this video as I know his is your or at least one of your all time favorite games which is why I picked it up... I trust you, Richard
Dave Russell actually, i've read elsewhere from the one of the designers that they don't go in the black market. the reason cost value is included on them is so that they can work with cards like stunbolt. www.boardgamegeek.com/article/16760272#16760272
In case your wondering or anyone else I got this message from catalyst games. We’re are currently looking at an April release. Once it’s in our warehouse we can then provide specific dates. Thanks for your interest! Randall
When you take an extra role card (because you're playing with less than 4 players), you actually get an extra nuyen at the start of the game, so in your example 2 player game, you and Jen should start with 6 and 3 bucks, respectively; it helps take the sting out of the extra obstacles that end up hitting you, and gives you a little head start on buying cards that you'll need to perform your "backup" role.
this video and final thoughts made more for SR Crossfire than anything else :) any chance of run through/final thoughts for Prime Runner? waiting for months on this :)
i do have a copy, but it's been super hard to get it to the table as i've been buried under an avalanche of other stuff. what i suspect my feelings will be is something like "after trying the new stuff, i prefer the original rules. fortunately, with this new edition, you can play with new 'watered down' rules, or the original rules, your choice, so it's all good" :)
@Rahdo, thanks for your reviews. I have one question - what is your W/L ratio for 2 players without upgrades? We are able to survive up 4 obstacles with DOC card in Black Market. If not - 2-3 obstacles. Played 5 games with wife so far, no luck.
+Andrii Chabykin i was getting about 20% wins, though i've up'd that to about 30% now that i'm a bit smarter about hot to play. the developers get about 80% wins in 2p with no upgrades :)
+rahdo Do you discard any basic cards before the mission starts? This should affect the game alot. Black Market is not filled with useless garbage. We tried 4 players game, and it is far more balanced and enjoyable. We lost, but only because of unfortunate crossfire event. This time I didn't feel the game was about pure luck.
Rahdo sorry to bother you again. But ive seen videos where people are playing with each role starting cards. Each role your playing you get the other seven cards as well. You should be playing with 14 cards for each of the twol roles? Is this true, or are the others playing this way is wrong. Should I have 7 starting cards for samuraii, and 7 cards for decker. Then 7 cards for face, and 7 for mage being the other character?
nope, in a 2p game where you take on 2 roles, one of them is a 'major' roll and the other is a 'minor'. you set up your deck for the major one, and the minor one only matters for card effects like "the decker takes damage" or stuff like that :)
Ok. Do the rules actually state that. I believe you, Im just concerned now is all. Is there somewhere that states thats official? Thanks for replying, I just want to make sure im playing 100% accurate for the true experience is all.
Thanks for replying Rhado. I should of clariffied, I have high caliber added to my market. I just dont understand why the basic 40+ cards are so many basic, and they even say black market on them? So don't add is official? Also the rules state a discard pile for the black market cards, which can be reshuffled if the market becomes down, or out of stock. I just dont know where the black market discard cards come from?
iirc the extra basic cards were included because the 'dual class' roles have the potential to change up how many cards are needed when setting up a 4p game. and yeah, 100% official, no basic cards in the market (this is a common mistake that players make... they should really have been more clear in the rules about it). the market discard pile (which starts out empty) can be used if certain card abilities cause you to empty out the market and redraw new cards.
i dunno. i've been hearing that it's a lot easier, which for my money will make it less good, as i love the challenge of crossfire. and afaik the full team of designers who worked on crossfire did not work on dragonfire, so that's a bit of worry as well. but time will tell :)
Easier is bad unfortunately. I've preordered it, but looking at the game reviews I'm still not convinced it will be as good as shadowrun. I just found out about the interactive runthrough with Sean McCarthy on BGG and I'm having a blast! Makes me want to play the game so much! I know what I'm doing tonight haha
rahdo, I'm an avid fan of the RPG and just had to get this when I saw it and I love playing it solo controlling 2 characters. I've always pronounced the money, nuyen, as New Yen. I could be wrong, but it sounds right.
Great cliffhanger at the end, I've immediately clicked to watch the extended play ;) This looks like a great game. How long does it usually take for two players to finish the scenario?
+Vojta Karen no... he means what he says, "A Starting Deck of 8 instead of 7"... he's not talking about the starting hand he's talking about the deck of his role, and all decks have 7 cards but his has 8 because of the upgrade he chose
First - thank you for doing a run through of the game. It helps me grasp the concepts of game play faster than just reading the rules. Second - i love how your Mrs. does not want to use guns, but with a 'wink and a nod'. :) Hahaha Third - i completely agree with you on games SHOULD be hard... otherwise, go play solitaire or something. I now want to buy 2 sets of the characters expansion pack, for one thing, i am not fond of the Male Elf picture in the base kit, and another, i want to be able to play solo (which i know is insane), AND be able to play with several friends at various times, all with their own characters! A few times i did have to rewind and go, 'what?', but that is because you did it 'live' and i still appreciate the effort and time you took. Looking forward to getting out into the shadows with this game.
Here's 2 questions about this game: 1) everytime you start a game, your character must begin with that same 7 cards? (not counting the skills) and 2) the roles only interfer with the starting deck? btw: the little dragon is awesome!
Anderson Pereira Barbosa every time you play, you choose a starting roll, which defines what your starting hand is. however, there are special level up abilities that you can earn which change this basic game rule. also, the role you take defines your starting hand, and also defines how some bad guys will attack you, and how some crossfire events will hit you...
Got it, thanks ***** But I think it would be nicer if we could keep at least 1 equipment or ability at the end of a match... but I think it's ok, the game is still good
Thanks to your video, I recently picked this up, and I have really been enjoying it!
