I really like long baggy shirt/sweatshirt over long flowing skirt!! but currently having a rough time on my period so my outfit recipe has been pj shirt+pj bottoms for the past couple days 😂
Kathleen, please continue to make things about art theory! I loved learning about why certain outfits work through the lens of established tenants of style and design! Sometimes, I'll really like something and not be able to articulate why until you mention something in one of your videos and I'll be like "I KNEW I LIKED YOU FOR A REASON!"
My go-to recipe is swooshy skirt + button-up shirt + vest/cardigan + big ol' belt. I feel like a pirate or a professor or a hobbit or a little milkmaid or an adventurer, depending on the specific combo, and it always brings me so much joy.
Best piece of fashion advice ever given to me was - "dress like your character in a movie." It means I wear more jewellery and accessories and generally try harder when dressing
Yes, another slam dunk of a video!!! One thing I sometimes do to feel inspired is pick a favourite character and try to dress like them based off my own wardrobe. Ex, depending on the vibe, any of the three main characters in Jurassic Park lol
Just adding to the many comments of PLEASE DO MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS!!! I love learning new "style rules" that aren't about flattering or emphasizing waist or whatever else fashion BS there is. I feel so inspired by you and now I'm excited to do my closet declutter with this new framework of "what if I would wear this more if I styled it different?" for those pieces I love but can't figure out how to wear. Thank you!!!
Glad you enjoyed it! I looooove reworking my pre-conceived ideas to make fashion more fun and freeing so I'm glad you're along for the ride! We've got this!!! :o)
I love tiny top big bottom chonky shoe! Also, I so appreciate you taking this topic in a visual artistic direction, because while I've unlearned a lot of my internalized fatphobia, words like "flattering" and goals like defining the waist can be really triggering. This helped me to think of my outfit less as a way to make myself look a certain way, and more like I'm designing an art project. Just make cool shapes!!
It's a little bit tough of a combo for me since I'm so short but lots of Southeast Asian and South Asian cultures have been rockin' the dress over pants look for ages! I'm planning on getting a fun, modern version of a traditional viet ao dai for my wedding so it's def worth a look for inspo with that sort of outfit.
This video is about to be my fashion Bible. I will be referring back to her every morning until I memorize every word of this wonderfully practical text.
I truly am just a princess in a silly goofy mood ✨ Also Kathleen words cannot express the good vibes your videos bring me, they're the comfiest of comfort content ❤(& I learn helpful thrift goblin tips)
My favorite recipe is a 90s throwback 🌻 Flowy swirly almost-maxi skirt, floral or hippie top, long vest or jacket, maybe a belt if my waist is too hard to find under there, and any velvety, shiny, or embroidered pieces are bonus points! Substitute jeans and sandals at whim!
I realize I do the monofit with diagonal accent all the time! My favorite is to belt a long Tshirt/columnar dress or jumpsuit with a furoshiki, palestinian keffiyeh or a bold eastern european cabbage rose wool scarf. Even better if lots of patterns involved. I love a good pattern mix. If you fold the scarf on the diagonal and tie anywhere around the waist or hip you get a great sectioning of the body into two triangles. Added fun: if the scarf has tassels or fun trim, fringe.
okay this goes more for fabric rather than silhouettes, but I feel like this is a pretty great combo: 2 solid pieces+ 1 patterned. Picture it; jeans, tiny plain top, checked blazer. Or how bout solid white shirt, solid black skirt, patterned vest? Have we considered solid colored matching top and bottom with FUNKY PATTERNED TIGHTS UNDERNEATH??? i think the moment you have 3 pieces or more on that work together you just come off automatically as more fashionable cuz people are like woah that person was able to make so many garments work in one fit!!! and 2 plain, 1 pattern means you are bold enough to wear a pattern but the outfit still matches cuz the rest is actually quite plain and simple
For summer, I love a solid color, maxi cotton-jersey tank dress with a very airy oversized crocheted pullover and super long "statement" pendant _or_ a seersucker midi pinafore topped by a snug crocheted crop top (I have one in taupe decorated with sea urchin quills). Also, a snug crop tee, bike shorts, mini, or slim pants (in the same color) topped with a voluminous contrasting color (or cool pattern) button-down shirt or Japanese haori and cross-body jewelry or bag. I love your channel, Kathleen--interesting content but, what's more important to me, interesting creator.
My go-to outfit recipe during the winter months is a bright vest and a complimentary bow in a newsboy cap. IDK why but it makes me feel like a whimsical 1920's orphan!
I've been dressing like my grandmas lately--- flowy colorful blouses with midi skirts (w/ pockets!!!), hair wrapped in a bandana/headscarf. They had impeccable style yo
I feel like your channel has become my DIY BFA curriculum. Also...haven't tried this, but I recently saw a corset over a turtleneck, and it blew my mind.
On a lazy day I typically tend to dress to the nines just for the fun of it, typically a long skirt/trousers, poofy sleeved blouse (off the shoulder, and a corset type top and/or belt. Adventurer/Hobbit/Jurassic Park/Garden Fairy/Treasure Planet/Pirate vibes. If I have to get stuff done then it’s tanks or flowing t-shirts and shorts/overalls, usually looking a bit blocky or well-fitted. Think of ✨camp counselor core✨. Those are my go tos!
My current outfit obsession is long swooshy skirt + tiny top. So many combinations. I like the juxtaposition of ultra feminine on bottom with the possibility of edgy or even sorta masculine on top.
I would love some pointers on fashion ideas for when you're limited by sensory issues, physical discomfort, or just really struggling to love your body. Chronic pain, autistic with big sensory issues, low on funds, housebound in a country that lacks good second hand options, no air conditioning, and being a shape and size that isn't a stick, I find it really difficult to even start to think of how to wear anything that isn't just functional, and don't know the last time something looked good on me.
Ooh I'm a big fan of the Princess in a silly goofy mood one! Corset/bustier + some sort of shirt + a skirt feels like such an integral part of my style!
I'm a big fan of the "tight sleeveless under-layer, long flowy over-layer, big boots" recipe. There's also "shirt with interesting chest/sleeves + vest" recipe that usually incorporates plain pants and a belt. Usually over-accessorizing at the neck, torso, & wrists, sometimes also the hips and shoulders. Often adding chains, safety pins, and other decorations
My personal fav outfit recipe is ripped baggy jeans, either a long graphic tee, a mini shirt or shirtless, and then a ripped vest!! Can be a plaid vest, poofy vest, whatever you want! And then ofc we can’t forget the accessories!! Lots and LOTS of accessories
My outfit recipe is colorful skinny jeans (or tripp pants), tucked int shirt, and big stompies (demonia shoes). I also wear a leg pouch (think fanny pack but more military in look and attaches around waist and to leg) (a purse/bag i cannot lose) which gives it a skinny- bulky-skinny-bulky sandwich effect. (bonus points for big, punk, or colorful hair and 3 or more necklaces)
Kathleen illustrated I love you! :->> since I started watching your videos my style has shifted into combos that bring me joy! One of my favs atm is a boxy/long collared button up shirt, then a midi skirt or wide leg cropped culotte + calf length socks and boots + accessories (necklace, earrings, rings) it really makes me feel like I'm living my cool art student dreams.
My go to recipe is cargo pants, tiny top, loose over shirt, and chunky boots. One of my favorite things to do is play with the length of the over shirt - I've got cropped button ups, oversized button ups, a long button up dress that I wear as an overshirt, and each of these pieces gives the recipe a different vibe (or flavor, if you will)
One of my favourite recipes is figure-hugging crop top, high waisted bottom and long open top layer like a men's shirt, men's jacket, long cardigan, baggy zip hoodie etc. It plays so well with different heights of waistlines, contrast of volume, contrast of gendered clothing and you can even bring a great colour contrast in there with everything solid underneath and then a fun-coloured top layer or the other way round etc. Also, what I absolutely love is mesh and sheer stuff because it makes the silhouette even more complex.
Back in the spring, before it got so hot, I liked wearing a men's vest as a top--the buttoned up, waistcoat type of vest. I'd wear this under my blazer with a pleated midi skirt--everything almost the same color. And big gold jewelry.
just got back from Berlin where i rocked a long dress cross body bag and platform trainers every day ! (different dresses ) also like short dresses with footless tghts underneath in hot weather . In winter my go too is a long dress with a long sweater on top, or a long strappy dress with a long sleeved top underneath and chunky boots .🥰🥰
I need to use outfit recipes more to save myself time in the morning! The one I tend to go for a lot is button up shirt + loose pants + high-tops and its winter version, button up shirt over a turtleneck + loose pants + boots.
My go to is always a layer over a turtleneck, a big t-shirt over a turtleneck, a tanktop/corset-like top over a turtleneck, or a dress over a turtleneck. It's such a solid go to, never fails. Of course big pant, little top is a classic Im more a fan of big jacket, big shoes, little pant.
My favourite in the winter (I live in Canada so it gets pretty cold) is a turtleneck under a minidress (tight or loose) over wide leg jeans. Its such a great way to keep warm bonus if you are wearing tights under your jeans for extra warmth. Extra bonus if you have butterfly clips that match your dress lol. Whats nice about this is if you wear black jeans and an oversized black blazer its also super good for professional settings. I really love this combo! It's totally a go to on those cold winter days where I am too lazy. Love your videos btw, I always come to your channel for inspiration!
My current favorite recipe is high-waisted pants/skirts and a tied top. Sometimes it's billowy and voluminous, and sometimes it's more form-fitting. But I'm loving the tied-round-the-waist detail right now.
I'm a huge fan of skirt and graphic tee shirt, usually knotted, or just throwing on a dress and maybe layering with that, depending on the weather. Also dresses over dresses!
If I had the money I would totally hire you to tell me what to wear, I'd love to have your sense of style. Thank you so much for your work, for us fashion-impaired people, these videos are truly helpful ❤xxoo from Spain!
Little top/big bottom is a go-to for me a lot BUT, I also love pairing any sort of peasant blouse with a midi or maxi a-line skirt and a wide belt (last-minute renfaire outfit, if you will)
love a good p.i.a.s.g.m.! another simple fun outfit to do is masculine top + feminine bottom/ feminine top + masculine bottom. so like a men's button down/printed shirt/hoodie with a skirt or figure-hugging jeans, or a vintage blouse or frilly top with workwear inspired pants/cargos/corduroy big pants. alternatively, i go as femme as possible with like circle skirt and flowery silk shirt and big colourful earrings!
another underrated go to i think is the MOST simple, but i basically just call it the rory gilmore, where its a full length top especially if the top is a bit fitted, and some mid-rise pants. im tellin you, when you need comfort this is THE go to. one of my favorite outfits are a tight graphic tee and then some sleek khakis or big black jeans. im also a GREAT enjoyer of the turtleneck, so pairing it with anything is a win in my book. under a oversize tee, or a regular sized tee, or a sweatshirt, or under overalls, or under a dress, on top of a skirt, shorts, or pants. my favorite piece in my wardrobe is a ribbed tight black turtleneck with 1/2 sleeves. there isn't a single thing i haven't worn with it
Does anyone else love tube tops over tank tops , or over baggy tee shirts . I’ve been into layering skimpy tops I never wear over more modest tops I feel like I’m actually using my wardrobe. I wanna be cute but I get anxiety and also get cold
I just discovered you! I was on my way to the thrift store and typed in thrifting fall trends... and BOOM! You showed up. I watched a few of your videos, and I'm an instant fan. You are adorable and fearless. I'm so inspired...off to the thrift store to find treasures...
One of my favourite outfit recipe for several years has been wide-legged jeans or pants + chinched in waist + jacket or shirt with big poofy sleeves or shoulder pads. It´s like 40s on steroids and combines the best things of both the 70s and 80s💖
A summery dress becomes colder weather appropriate with the power of a turtleneck underneath! (and perhaps tights or leggings hidden under the skirt) Probably only effective if you live somewhere that doesn’t get all that cold in the winter like I do (Australia) or more for Autumn or early spring when it’s chilly but not mid-winter cold…but I love it. Carries clothes that at first seem only appropriate for one weather flavour through the whole year! This is also how I wear my jumpsuits/overalls. Short shirt underneath in warmer weather (you know the pants on them are nice and big and flowy to let air through) and a long sleeved shirt / turtleneck underneath for for colder weather! Truly a go-to outfit recipe for me although it is just another spin-off of small top-big pants I think lol
Long skirt, lil top is always a winner. 😊 Would you ever consider making a style video about hairstyles/hair accessories with outfits? I always feel that's where my outfits fall down!
Not so much a full blown outfit recipe, BUT I do love me a penny loafer with EVERYTHING! With shorts, jeans, pleated pants, short sleeve shirts, tanks, tees, sweaters, etc. 😌🥰
Pattern pants, with gold or silver belt, plain shirt, pattern jacket, black hat. I guess put simply a combination of patterns with solid colors is my outfit recipe of choice.
I know this is an older video, but I only just watched it today. I try to stick to very andro looks so I tend to lean towards patterned button up and mens shorts (bc it do be hot where I live). But a style that I always love to see (not for myself, bc I don't really wear dresses) is formal/cutesy dress + hi-top converse. I also love super big cargo pants with a CHONKY stomper boot with small top (mesh, crop, tank, etc.) If I lived somewhere with cooler temps, I'd probably have a lot more outfit recipes 🥲Like oversized button up tucked into slim cut trousers--a masculine/andro play on big top/little or no bottoms because it's like really sleek straight trousers and super baggy top that looks intentionally casual.
long layer + long layer is probably my favourite, although I only really wear it in the fall/winter (maybe spring, if it's still cold). It's funny because I used to really dislike dresses over pants or long skirts, but now I absolutely adore the style! I think it's because I only ever saw combinations that didn't't really do anything for me, like the infamous 2000s Ashley Tisdale looks. But if I just pay attention to which layer does or doesn't work with the other then I can create some outfits I'm absolutely in love with :)
I LOVE long layer on long layer, whereas my sisters dont like it at all, no contrast. Then you brought in skit/dress over pants ordeal and YASSS I didnt know what I liked was so artsy “rythm and movement” like slay. I do love me a good big shirt lil pants tho. Still gives that flowy vibeeee
my fav outfit recipe has got to be: chunky sneakers, wide leg dress pants, ruffled/layered maxi skirt over that for the bottom. then a turtle neck shirt or flowy shirt (with flared sleeves and micro-pleated for bonus points) and a wide dungaree style mini dress over that for the top. additionally some chunky necklaces and/or earrings. makes me feel like a magical, lost, eclectic fairy goblin. yummy
everyone who said turtleneck under a summery dress (esp formfitting ones!!) GETS IT. i adore turtlenecks so so much. no one looks bad in them i swear!! one of my favorite go-to's is a black turtleneck under a un-buttoned short sleeve shirt + big pants/shorts depending on the weather, bonus if the shirt has a funky fun pattern on it (usually always does lol), i also like little shirt + BIG jacket + big pants, with a major emphasis on the jacket part of the outfit (usually i'll wear the same color for the pants and shirt, then the jacket is a contrasting color and / or has a pattern), when worse comes to worse i just wear all brown tbh. you can never go wrong with the beloved brown
I recently have been wearing jean minis over slightly longer twirly skirts or my tiered lace bottomed slip. Unexpected compliments. Love showing legs, but I'm supposedly over mini skirt age 😁💥
I like the idea of a recipe better than "uniform" which gets thrown around a lot. I like to pair a fitted tank with a full skirt, whether that be midi or maxi. Add in my 4 wheel drive birks in the warm or my moto boots in the cold, and a big earring. That is Leslie!
Denim shorts oversized graphic tee , one side tucked into front pocket. Faded, torn mom jeans with a chiffon dressy top. These are my go tos in the summer. And I just ordered a black maxi skirt to go with my giant graphic tees as well. And I LOVE YOU!!! ❤❤❤
Love seeing all the support and participation you're getting -- I was here day 1 ❤🎉 have you thought of doing a bag painting giveaway again? Or maybe contest to paint a few of your viewers bags or leather things with stains? That would be so fun! 😅❤
Just rewatched this and let me tell you WHAT.. KATHLEEN IS SO SMORT! I feel totally inspired.. and equipped to actually do something with it. Thank you, bless you.
What's your fav outfit recipe?!
I really like long baggy shirt/sweatshirt over long flowing skirt!! but currently having a rough time on my period so my outfit recipe has been pj shirt+pj bottoms for the past couple days 😂
straight up took notes on this.. i'm gonna go with big boxyy top and little/no pants... statement shoes pull it all togehter
I looooove a good princess in a silly goofy mood lol
I am in my empire waist dress with platform flip-flops Era. ANYTHING to make me look like a Greek goddess during the hot summer. 😘👌
Small top, big pants :3
Kathleen, please continue to make things about art theory! I loved learning about why certain outfits work through the lens of established tenants of style and design! Sometimes, I'll really like something and not be able to articulate why until you mention something in one of your videos and I'll be like "I KNEW I LIKED YOU FOR A REASON!"
Yes I second this!!!
Same here! I took one design class and have been loving adding design elements to styling my clothes
YES! It’s super cool to learn more about I’d love a guide to design principles
LOVE this approach and will now need to invest in an all white outfit plus cane...
Yoooo I remember copying Laura derns outfit at age 6 and wanting to become a paleontologist just cuz the outfits duh

That's a huge reason that I take a design/artistic approach to style, too! I see you & am glad we can battle societal expectations together :)

you're the best wha da heck!!
A winter outfit recipe staple for me is tshirt with a plaid/flannel on top over jeans or a long skirt.
Sheer tights + loose short romper + sweater on top
I did say I love you, I want you to know that. Also my favorite part of the video was how endless the possibilities were, you’re so right.
Head wraps.
They give you another space to play with texture and color.
We should bring back more head pieces in general! :D
Something I dont wear myself, but love on others: poofy princess dress + boots!
I realize I do the monofit with diagonal accent all the time! woo I love these outfit recipes! I've heard of the 2+2 (casual + formal), unmatched shoes / unmatched hat ! All of these sound quite interesting!
I love how you always go for confidence and what to do and not what NOT to do
Current favorite is harem pants and cropped tank top.
Oooh, for the fourth recipe, what about long necklace jewelry used as the diagonal?
My current outfit obsession is long swooshy skirt + tiny top. So many combinations. I like the juxtaposition of ultra feminine on bottom with the possibility of edgy or even sorta masculine on top.

I love you! There I said it first this time!

Giant dress! Oversized harem pants! Huge shoe/sandal! Then a swippy bit on top- like a tasseled shawl or duster!

Love you Kathleen! 😘

another underrated go to i think is the MOST simple, but i basically just call it the rory gilmore, where its a full length top especially if the top is a bit fitted, and some mid-rise pants. im tellin you, when you need comfort this is THE go to. one of my favorite outfits are a tight graphic tee and then some sleek khakis or big black jeans. im also a GREAT enjoyer of the turtleneck, so pairing it with anything is a win in my book. under a oversize tee, or a regular sized tee, or a sweatshirt, or under overalls, or under a dress, on top of a skirt, shorts, or pants. my favorite piece in my wardrobe is a ribbed tight black turtleneck with 1/2 sleeves. there isn't a single thing i haven't worn with it
Does anyone else love tube tops over tank tops , or over baggy tee shirts . I’ve been into layering skimpy tops I never wear over more modest tops I feel like I’m actually using my wardrobe. I wanna be cute but I get anxiety and also get cold
my fav is flare pants + half-tucked shirt + vest
I just discovered you! I was on my way to the thrift store and typed in thrifting fall trends... and BOOM! You showed up. I watched a few of your videos, and I'm an instant fan. You are adorable and fearless. I'm so inspired...off to the thrift store to find treasures...
Can you do a video on making outfits with matching sets? I love the idea of them, but they always seem to fall flat when I try to wear them
Long maxi dress with long coat/jacket/kimono/cardigan or my fav vintage dressing gown :)
One of my favourite outfit recipe for several years has been wide-legged jeans or pants + chinched in waist + jacket or shirt with big poofy sleeves or shoulder pads. It´s like 40s on steroids and combines the best things of both the 70s and 80s💖
My fav outfit recipe recently has been small high neck top+ flowy skirt/big pants+ flowy long outer layer like a cardigan or an unbuttoned button up
A summery dress becomes colder weather appropriate with the power of a turtleneck underneath!
Truly a go-to outfit recipe for me although it is just another spin-off of small top-big pants I think lol
my go-to outfit recipe atm is monica geller-esque. mom jeans little top sneakers.
i looove like smart tailored paints and a fun top for cute contrast! (sometimes i pick out a colourful pant to make it extra silly!)
Little shirt, big pants / long skirt, baggy button-up / hoodie.
I’m so grateful UA-cam finally recommended your channel to me!!! ❤❤❤
Yaaay welcome!
I love me a tight (especially one that’s sheer) long sleeve with a T-shirt/tank/or corset over
I would like to add long coat, little skirt/ dress and I'm a big fan of using hair style and accessories to add to a silhouette
YOU HAD ME AT “BRAIN: SMOOTH”
like a MARBLE
😂
Using principles of art in outfit designing is genius! As a person who studies art more or less, this idea gives me so much inspiration! Thank you!
Big fan of the tiny top big pants vibe ✌🏼✌🏼
Drinking game! Take a shot every time she says endless! 😂
the options!!!! THEY'RE ENDLESS!!!!!!!!
GULP!!😜
Pattern pants, with gold or silver belt, plain shirt, pattern jacket, black hat. I guess put simply a combination of patterns with solid colors is my outfit recipe of choice.
I love your humor & explanations so much! Thankful that I found your channel ❤
I also love super big cargo pants with a CHONKY stomper boot with small top (mesh, crop, tank, etc.)
If I lived somewhere with cooler temps, I'd probably have a lot more outfit recipes 🥲Like oversized button up tucked into slim cut trousers--a masculine/andro play on big top/little or no bottoms because it's like really sleek straight trousers and super baggy top that looks intentionally casual.
long layer + long layer is probably my favourite, although I only really wear it in the fall/winter (maybe spring, if it's still cold).
I love a combo of mini skirt + leg warmers + platform shoes 🥰
Kathleen turning fashion into a science 👏🧪💗
🤓🩵 hehehe
My favorite's big top, lil pants 💕
I LOVE long layer on long layer, whereas my sisters dont like it at all, no contrast. Then you brought in skit/dress over pants ordeal and YASSS I didnt know what I liked was so artsy “rythm and movement” like slay. I do love me a good big shirt lil pants tho. Still gives that flowy vibeeee
Your videos really do brighten my mood on Sunday afternoons/eveninings ❤ thank uuuu for making them
❤❤❤😂
my fav outfit recipe has got to be: chunky sneakers, wide leg dress pants, ruffled/layered maxi skirt over that for the bottom. then a turtle neck shirt or flowy shirt (with flared sleeves and micro-pleated for bonus points) and a wide dungaree style mini dress over that for the top. additionally some chunky necklaces and/or earrings. makes me feel like a magical, lost, eclectic fairy goblin. yummy
everyone who said turtleneck under a summery dress (esp formfitting ones!!) GETS IT. i adore turtlenecks so so much. no one looks bad in them i swear!! one of my favorite go-to's is a black turtleneck under a un-buttoned short sleeve shirt + big pants/shorts depending on the weather, bonus if the shirt has a funky fun pattern on it (usually always does lol), i also like little shirt + BIG jacket + big pants, with a major emphasis on the jacket part of the outfit (usually i'll wear the same color for the pants and shirt, then the jacket is a contrasting color and / or has a pattern), when worse comes to worse i just wear all brown tbh. you can never go wrong with the beloved brown
I recently have been wearing jean minis over slightly longer twirly skirts or my tiered lace bottomed slip. Unexpected compliments. Love showing legs, but I'm supposedly over mini skirt age 😁💥
LIES!!! I’m 55 and you will pry miniskirts from my cryogenically frozen hands…😊
@@rochelle2758😂❣️ 56 here, thanks for that affirmation!
you're a total OG!!! thank you for being here
YES! I LOVE long layer long layer!!
Just rewatched this and let me tell you WHAT.. KATHLEEN IS SO SMORT! I feel totally inspired.. and equipped to actually do something with it. Thank you, bless you.
