      Gotta agree. They were good sports especially with the poke at them with the toy story crack. Good folks like these are ones I'd support any day. Clearly TJ was not impressed with the selection there.

    Minnesota is an “open distribution” state so there are a lot of distributors and all of them could have allocated bourbon. They tend to give those bourbons to big stores like total wine because they want to keep them happy and not change distributors. This tends to keep prices pretty similar across the board but makes it difficult for small independent stores to get much allocated bourbon

    • @jtlundberg2381
      @jtlundberg2381 8 місяців тому +4

      So if you want the best chance to find interesting bourbon in minnesota, you have to go to big stores around minneapolis

    As a MN native, I am embarrassed for selections we have at our stores. A couple buddies and I always drop into different shops around the Twin Cities. Mostly museum prices and very rare to come across allocated. Keep hunting! SoDak & NoDak are hunting spots for us and we stumble across a gem or two every trip. GL

    That is really cool you went to see Bob at Woody's! I don't drink anymore but Bob is a really nice guy. Woody and the previous owner Ed were really good guys too. Hopefully that place stands the test of time for awhile against the chain stores.

    Rochester, MN resident here! Love the channel! It is insanity when it comes to rare bourbon up here. It's all about who you know and getting lucky. I found Buffalo Trace, Antique 107, and Bourbon cream at a Kwik Trip for MSRP in Byron 10 miles down the road and that was a really big deal around here.

    If you ever stumble upon Tattersall again, their high rye bottled in bond and their rye are both amazing. Their BIB has continually beat Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Penelope Barrel Strength, and Old Forester 1920 in blinds we’ve done. Keeper’s Heart Cask Strength is also a damn good pick.

    Nice of you to come through Minnesota/Wisconsin. Now you understand what the situation is like here. It's mostly a bourbon desert unless you play the lottery/raffle, get lucky and find something, know the store delivery days, know the store owner or are willing to grossly overpay.

    I love me some Brewzle but I'd be lying if I didn't say it's rather annoying to go into a store, ask 150 questions and not buy anything. I think a best practice is to buy a bottle, or something, when the owners are extremely nice, courteous and provide competitor recommendations, like the first store. Its just good business.

    • @C_GOODIES
      @C_GOODIES 7 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, he def does some stereotypical "tater" behavior. The universal rule is to bring a bottle up that you are going to buy. This can be something cheap like an Old Grand Dad 114, and then ask some questions to show you are wanting to support the store.

    If you’re passing through Montana, you may be interested in Lazy K Straight Bourbon. I understand it is only available in state and it is a collaboration with some cast member from Yellowstone (I don’t personally watch the show). I typically don’t get hyped about collaborations with celebrities but I picked up a couple bottles figured I’d give as gifts to friends outside of the state, but this is actually pretty decent, I think I’ll keep a bottle. Retails for around $105, a bit pricey, but figured since it won’t be around long I’d give it a shot.

    What’s the consensus on Gentleman Jack? Good for the beginner journey or would that Old Forester 86 be better to start with?

    Medley brothers 10 years ago was so good and sooooooo inexpensive. Curious if it would still hold up with all the other options the world gives us now? it would be worth a taste

      what is a barrel pick exactly? and what makes a good quality whiskey? thanks

      I would check out some of our reviews to get a sense on what makes good whiskey. Barrel picks are private selections. Basically, the stores will go to the distillery and select a barrel to sell themselves. Makes it a bit more unique than whatever the distillery puts out regularly.

    I live 4 hours north of Owatonna. MN is not the best to hunt bourbon in. Usually pay a 10% markup compared to what everyone else is paying.

    Omg! I live here!! I have been waiting to see you forever I had no idea you actually come to my town. You missed two of the best stores we have here too! Theyre small little holes in the wall, but they have the best selection in town hands down.

      @@warrenlawson3993 It's going to sound really bad, but one of the best liquor stores in town is Costco. They usually get something interesting or allocated every now and then and charge straight up MSRP prices, no gouging.
      Hy-Vee wine and spirits and Andy's crossroads are definitely two good ones in the video where you can try to find something interesting. Hy-Vee wine & spirits had a bunch of Jack Daniels 10 and 12 year that they were giving chances to buy with a lottery system and MSRP. Whenever they get really hard to fin allocated stuff that's how they do it, which is fair to the locals without gatekeeping it. They had a bunch of buffalo trace at $27 too recently just on the shelves for anybody.
      The Apollo wine and spirits by Best Buy has one of the best whiskey/scotch selections in town hands down. It's my go-to for spirits, but it's still Minnesota bad selection and the owner is a jerk, but the manager is one of the nicest guys you'll meet. Most of the Apollos actually have a pretty diverse and unique spirit selection compared to anybody else in town.
      Tessas Office occasionally has something interesting but usually at a markup.
      NW Andy's is a complete bust for spirits. In fact most of the Andy's except for crossroads have the exact same just super bare bottom generic stock spirits.
