- Singles Stroke Rolls | Snare Drum Technique
www.jonathancu...
In this video I discuss the technical aspect of how to play a single stroke roll, and its various musical applications. One of the fundamental stroke type and prominent on virtually all drumming traditions, it is nevertheless one of the most difficult techniques to get right.
Here, I explore the role of the fulcrum, fingers, and wrists, and how they must work together to produce a clean and controlled stroke.

Thoroughly excellent video, Jonathan, as are all your videos I've watched so far.
Keep 'em coming, please.
Thank you Ray, I shall try my best!
Excellent and so British.
Thanks, and either thanks or sorry for the latter, depending on your stance!
🤣
Probably the clearest thing I've ever seen on grip.
I'm not a drummer, but I have sticks, a pad (a better one is coming), and a rudiments book. I've had them for years and I've never gotten very far as it seems the instrument for which I am least suited, and it seems that way almost immediately.
I was a sprinter when I was young and I've always been aware that running is not just walking sped up, but a different animal entirely. I wonder if drumming with speed is just slow drumming sped up, or is it, to some degree or another, a different animal. Thx.
Thank you for the comment.
Please don’t think you are not suited to drumming, whether on a pad or a full kit. If you have good understanding, are willing to learn, and practise, you will get better. Please contact me at www.jonathancurtis.co.uk to discuss it further. Id love to help you get started on the right foot (or hand…)
@@JCurtisDrums To be clear, of the instruments I've tried, it's the one I'm least suited to, and that's true, at least initially. I was initially very poorly suited to singing, but studied opera in college and spent most of my working life as a voice teacher, so I know these things don't always end up the way they start. I'm doing this just for fun, so I'm not currently interested in lessons. Thanks for your response.
Btw, I just got a new practice pad with much more appropriate bounce to it. I already started applying some of the things you talked about and it looks promising as long as I put in the time.
Good video, helped me understand how to play with the proper technique 👍🏾
Hi, thanks for the kind words. I'm really glad you found this video helpful. Feel free to drop me a message through the website to let me know how you get on with your own practising.
Very nice video, unfairly low views.
Thanks. They’re quality views though, and that’s what really counts :)
