- Have a tube amp and want to know what it's like to change tubes? Just want to see the inside of a Dual Rectifier? Well, here you go! Come along as I swap the PreAmp and Power Tubes in my Mesa Dual Rectifier with New Tubes! Does it make a difference in my tone? Do I push a tube too hard and have it shatter in my hands? Watch to find out!
Things used to make this video:
Mesa Dual Rectifier
LTD MH-401BFM Baritone tuned to A std
Lumix G7 Camera
JetCity 2x12
Sennheiser e609
Reaper DAW
VideoPad video editor
#dualrectifier #tubeamp #valveamp
The change was more noticeable than I expected; and I think it's an improvement as well.
I'm a dork, no shnitzel, I'm one 2 🤘🤘🤘
Time to change the tubes in my rectifier xD
I know lots of people at Mesa and many more that have come and gone. I use their products exclusively. I use a mountain of tubes, so I highly recommend changing them after a few hundred hours....(personal preference).
Randy is the true artist!
MESA, go big or go home!
Thanks for posting a demo!
I am going to be swapping out the power tubes in my Dual Rectifier as soon as they arrive in a couple days. I was worried about having to adjust the bias. I’m so relieved I don’t have to mess with it.
Thanks again for the helpful tutorial!
Oh wow the difference is massive, I need to swap out my str 440 in my Roadking now! That amp gets so wooly now I know why. Glad you did the old vs new sound samples at the end because I almost forgot how it sounded from the beginning of the video.
Much better! Cleaned up the low end a lot. Overall much more clear and defined.
Much better, really tightened the gain up,
Cool brother! I heard a clear difference even through the phone speaker. With new tubes there's more high end, brighter, tighter, less mush. Well done!
Also you're improving on video recording and editing, keep up the good work!
Just installed the 445's on my TC 100 and they give it some aggression!
All you need to hear :D old tubes 2:51 new tubes 8:43
to know if the tubes are matched you need a tube tester, ide go with nos preamp tubes to get the best tone .ge and mullards work the best for mesa. all mesa tubes are made in china at shuguang (aka sino for us oldtimers...) so you get random gain and noise levels especially with preamp tubes at v1
As great as these amps sound with 6L6's... imagine how they'd sound with 6550's or KT88's !
Mesa tubes are tight compared to others.
I may not be reading your descriptions properly after you swapped in the new tubes. I wouldn't put your compressor in your tube screamer into the effects loop. Run them before the amp input. (Correct me if I've misunderstood what your notes)
It's a pretty good comparison overall. Thanks!
No, only thing in my FX Loop is an EQ. Tube Screamer and Compressor are in front of the amp. Comp first, then TS.
Do you have your fx loop in series? I noticed it looked like you had your fx switch all the way to the right? I am having similar issue in volume drop but in my channel 3. Seems to sound better when fx is bypassed
No it's stock, so parallel. It's set to the Footswitch on both knobs, and the 'mix' knobs are at noon, 'Normal'. I will try the bypass and see if that takes care of it.
Bro, it sounded better with old tubes 🤣
To each their own. I didn't hear a massive change myself, but I do think it sounds just a touch tighter on the low end. Others say it sounds better, others say no change or worse. I changed them more cause I just bought the amp used recently, and these appeared to be the original tubes + the way the 4 power tubes didn't appear to be matched properly.
I'd like to see a comparison of new STR440s and STR445s. I just had to retube my 2015 and all I could get here in Canada is the 440s. I can't find 441s for my Mark V here wither. weird.
I got my tubes direct from Mesa. I know that probably doesn't help you much in Canada though. It is surprising that you can't get 445s there. I know a guy in Toronto that has had DRs off and on over the years, I'll ask him if he has any sources.
@@kamicosmos I managed to get it sorted. I emailed the headquarters of Long & McQuade (basically Guitar Centre for Canada), they contacted Mesa, and then added the SKUs into their system, so I could order. Bit drastic, but it worked. I ordered a couple of weeks ago, so hopefully they turn up soon. I tried to order from Mesa, but they wanted $30 shipping for four tubes, which is a bit nuts.
@@EdwardKayeplus very cool, good job! Let me know what you think of them!
@@kamicosmos I got them installed in my multiwatt today and love them. They really tighten up the bass to help give it a more modern sound. It makes it a bitter closer to 5150 territory. I still have 440s in my old Dual Rectifier Tremoverb, so now I have a bit of variety.
Why you did not replace 5U4GB tubes?
I don't use the tube rectifier, just the solid state. Plus, I think they were out of stock at the time. Eventually I'll replace them. That might be a good project, research all the different rectifier tubes and see if I want to go with something different...
how much did the whole replacing tubes cost u ?
Preamps were $21 each x5. Power tubes 66 per pair x2. So $237. + Whatever shipping was.
Hi, what are 5U4GB tubes for? Anybody?
Those are the Rectifier tubes.
Any issues running USA pre amp tubes?
Not sure what you mean? The mesa tubes have been just fine. Although, I don't think they are USA Made. There's only a few tube manufactures in the world, and they are in China, Russia, and maybe one in Czech republic? But, pretty sure these are Chinese tubes. I figured it was worth the extra cost to get them from Mesa since they test them all out and 'pair them' together. Buy Once, Cry Once kind of deal.
@@kamicosmos I mean using Vintage USA tubes, which I usually do in V1? Thanks for the response, im picking up a 5:50 tomorrow
looks fcking stressful as fck
Why are you wearing gloves ?
