Incredible footage of the shipwreck of SS Nemesis captured by CSIRO research vessel Investigator P.1

- In September 2023, CSIRO research vessel (RV) Investigator undertook an investigation of the 120-year old wreck of SS Nemesis, a 73 metre steamship that sank in a gale off NSW, Australia in 1904. The investigation, undertaken on behalf of Heritage NSW, used a special drop camera system which has vertical and horizontal cameras. The footage captured was incredible, showing the entire shipwreck in great detail from bow to stern. This footage, along with other imagery and data that had been collected, was used by Heritage NSW to identify the wreck as the SS Nemesis.

How can they tell what ship that is, it's just a pile of wooden planks lying on the ocean floor?
Hi there,
Thanks for your question. The bathymetry and camera survey data collected by CSIRO, along with the previous imagery collected by Subsea, provided substantial detail to enable Heritage NSW’s maritime archaeology experts to identify the wreck as the Nemesis.
In addition to the wreck location and dimensions matching those of the Nemesis, one of the key features that aided in the identification was the thick hull ‘sheer strake’ (a section of plating on the hull), an unusual feature for this class of vessel and a notable feature of the Nemesis.
Other key features included the hatch and deck structure locations, the number of ventilators, the engine type and overall structural layout mapped to historic ship’s plans, as well as the observed cargo of coal around the wreck.
