Thank you so much for posting! Don Anderson is my late great-grandfather. It was a pleasure to watch this. :)

Hi, Katty, I'm glad you enjoyed it! You might want to check out some of the Face Book sites dedicated to Spike Jones. You'll probably find more pictures of your great-grandfather.

@@tkhering ... Hi Janet... I love these old videos. They bring back such wonderful memories. I remember being very little and seeing Spike Jones on TV. Also, I believe his wife is still living, yes? She would be a wonderful interview.

@@tkhering ... Oh, sad. Another source gone. I say that in all sincerity as it was last year when I thought it would be so cool if someone interviewed her.
Also, I made it a point to record my Grandmother when she was in her '80s. I still have it on CD. She lived to be 98.

In the original version, i think the lyric went
    "At night when you're asleep,
    Into your tent I'll creep."
That must have run afoul of some ridiculous "code" they had in 1942!

How is "At night when I'm asleep,/Into my tent she'll creep" any less risque?

To be honest, I think you’ll have more problem with a lyric like that today than in the days of the Hayes code.

Thr Hays Code? No showing a man and a woman even sitting together in bed. Must have at least one leg on the floor. Cannot show any use of drugs. Cannot have a single queen size bed in th3 bedroom. Must have two separate beds in the bed room as if sex did not exist.

I've heard it so many times as, "At night when you are asleep WITH NO PANTS ON"

I think it was just a way to put it into first person so it could be sung by the Sheik himself.

The song goes back to 1921 and was inspired by Valentino.
Here's a slightly different Spike Jones audio version:

For some history, Lowell Thomas wrote a book called, "With Lawrence in Arabia" and there is a picture of an Arabian guy and the caption says, "A sheik of Araby.' So, I guess that's where it comes from but the book is from 1924 so who knows? But at the time there was a lot of interest in Arab and Egyptian culture as the tombs of Tutankhaman were discovered around then.
