Sir Gjermund... I find your lessons quite helpful and of next level.! Thank you for uploading such lessons.. I'm beginning to accept the flavors of jazz.
I've found most jazz-piano teachers will never show 'tricks' or 'tips'... which, coming from bass & guitar to piano, is exactly what I wanted, so to discover your great method is a real inspiration, thank you for your generosity, Gerhmund
4:58 alright, time to play L.A Noire haha I see, so the Upper Structure voicing is the style that makes such rich chords that I could never found a name to refer to.
You are amazing & so is your Music Sir Gjermund! I was trying to find your Composition: "The Last Chance" - Wow it is Breathtaking & so reminiscent of Bill Evans: Time Remembered! I really enjoy and have learned so much from your Tutorials. Thank you so much for sharing indeed!
Hi, Congratulations for your videos. I have now signed up to your Jazz step by step course and I work on every day. I find the way you teach very interesting for several reasons a schedule to learn and strenghten your playing in all keys working on chords to get them as a reflex. Mastering II - V - I all keys and it is the beginning the videos are very good in quality and with 2 cameras you see each hand. I am longing for improvisation courses. Regards
Great lesson. Upper structures are not a nice option for playing jazz piano, if you choose to use them. They are essential. Without them you'll NEVER have the jazz piano sound you're after. It just won't happen.
Agree! Without US voicings, the harmony sounds mor like pop. I recommend to learn basic chords too. Mixing them with the US voicings creates more tension, as you have a better foundation to create the tension.
So clear now! thank you, master. Two questions: ¿a C7 with an augmented triad (C, E, Ab) on top its consider an upper structure? ¿what chord it would be?.... C7b13?
Hi, great video - loved it! It's really helpful that the piano image is shown above your video clearly showing which notes are played simultaneously. I have a few questions.. at 5:14. why have you labelled F# instead of Gb? I thought Gb was the correct spelling for the 7th note in AbMaj? What is the correct way? Thank you very much once again.
Hi Gjermund, amazing content as always! What kind of software do you use to make the midi keyboard display play out along with your videos? And how do you get the midi react to the acoustic piano?
Thank you so much for explaining voicing. I'm learning alone, and it's difficult to understand how to play chords when you improvise.. Please,if you can, share with us more about voicing,it would mean a lot to me. Thanks again, you are the best teacher for me!
I've been following your videos for a while- excellent !!! I'm a pianist ( in India) , do you have a full course ? what is the fee? I'm very keen , thank you sir
TREMENDOUS LESSON! YOU FELLAS NEED TO BECOME EXTREMELY FAMOUS ! YOU COULD SAVE THE MUSIC WORLD FROM EMINENT DESTRUCTION ! JUST KIDDING, OF COURSE... HAHA! BUT THIS LESSON DOES MARK A CHANGE IN DIRECTION FOR MY STUDIES FOR SURE. EXCELLENT GROUP AS WELL ! THANKS VERY MUCH ! I WILL FIND YOUR ALBUMS ON YOU TUBE?
May I ask? Based from your video and pdf, these are the UST you play based on the chord: Minor7: 2nd major, 2nd minor Dominant7: 2nd major, 6th major, flat 6th major, sharp 4th major Are those just examples and there are more? Or are they the best ones or something?
Another question I have is why have you spelled the F#13 chord at 5:32 F#, E, Bb, Eb? I thought the Bb should be A# (being one of the notes forming the F#7 chord)? I know that it's enharmonic. I'm interested in the way you have spelled the chord. Why have you spelled it this way? Thank you very much.
That explains it! Thanks so much for your reply! You know what, I keep watching this video over and over again and always learn something new. Thanks so much for teaching me! :)
In reality, the bass player was kidnapped and chained up to a closet many years ago. His only purpose now is to play the bass whenever Gjermund demands it.
If you look at your right hand just after that time mark, it is obviously not playing the chord sequences that are audible in the sound track-the left hand matches the soundtrack, but not the right hand. Which leads me to surmise that you overdubbed the sound on top of the video or vice versa.
Oh hey, I have a gig in a couple of weeks but I can't get my muscle memory good. I've been practicing none stop. I have to read chords note for note. Any quick tips? Lol I'm not new to jazz, I alternate lead and second alto but this is my first year on piano for jazz ensemble.
Do not like this "method" of planting different chords on top of eachother. It is too brainy, instead of using voiceleading and ear training to get to the sounds you hear, want to hear, and "HAPPEN TO HEAR" tHIS METHOD IS TURNING US INTO ROBOTS, half programmed or fully.PROGRAMMED. Sorry for not turning the caps off
Do you? My guess is you do not, and neither what I am very clearly saying. Extensions stem from linear expansion, not supplanting. Voice-leading VS Chord Stacking.
mcrohof The method of stacking chords has to abide by the foundational chord's scale. If you played a Cm7 and C#7 -9 on top it would sound like horse shit. The "chord" is an extension of the foundational chord that is homogenous with that chord. There are no clashing notes in an upper structure voicing, since both the base chord and the upper "chord" is in the same scale. What do you even mean with "Extensions stem from linear expansion, not supplanting". So you are inferring that chord stacking supercedes the other? That's the complete opposite of what you should think when you stack chords. It's as if you believe the upper structure is a separate entity, completely independent from it's partner chord. It's CALLED chord stacking, but is in fact a product of extending the chord and maybe doubling one or two notes that are present in the base chord. I've played for the morepart of my life and know what I'm saying.
"So you are inferring that chord stacking supercedes the other?: " I was and have been saying the exact inverse. Never stack chords, but listen to the sound of the extension and how you can use it and improve on it, depending the situation. NO RULES. Knowing what you are saying is not the same as understanding it. Applying it in a manner the greats from the 1900s-1940s learned and honed their craft.
mcrohof But...that's precisely what this video has been saying. Use chord extensions and vary depending on situation. What was even the point of sending your first comment if you bring nothing but the same message Gjermund did?? You sent something like "This is programming us into robots". What do you even mean to begin with? A human is capable of using this in his/her way. They aren't hard wired to play exactly like this.
Fantastic musical skills and knowledge, fantastic teaching skills, and really fantastic generosity for sharing. I can't get enough of this stuff!

Hi, Harsha.
Thanks for your comment. I have a popular Jazz Piano Step-by-Step course that you can find at popjazzonline.com
What are the other upper structure triads that we can play over Am except G triad? Thank you.
Was that a trumpet sample at the end or was he or she circular breathing?
What scales do you use to plat these chord progressions?
excelente!
Maestro Tendrá algunos tutoriales más personalizadas y cuál sería el costo
Sí. Consulta popjazzonline.com para obtener los detalles.

Hi, if I play a Bmin chord in the key of Bmin, would I play C#dim for the upper chord structure to make a flat 13 chord?
At 2:29 you mention another tutorial in relation to the Bmin/Emin upper chord structure. Can you post the link to that video, please?
+BeaTTender - sure: ua-cam.com/video/96-2hUMqZxY/v-deo.html
Master, i need hundred Be bop paterns, phrases and licks ,
chord symbol at 9:58 should say F/Ab13 instead of Gb/A13. but good video!
+Chris Lloyd - Well observed! You're absolutely right! Thanks.
May I ask? Based from your video and pdf, these are the UST you play based on the chord:
Minor7: 2nd major, 2nd minor
Dominant7: 2nd major, 6th major, flat 6th major, sharp 4th major
Are those just examples and there are more? Or are they the best ones or something?
Hi, Samuel.
There are more, but these are quite common.
Oh I see. Also, in the video, you said you have other video explaining about one of the upper structures, is the video the 13th chord?
Another question I have is why have you spelled the F#13 chord at 5:32 F#, E, Bb, Eb? I thought the Bb should be A# (being one of the notes forming the F#7 chord)? I know that it's enharmonic. I'm interested in the way you have spelled the chord. Why have you spelled it this way? Thank you very much.
+Pedapo Emstro - good question. Yes you are right. The midi keys at the top makes this decision, and unfortunately it is not as bright as we are 😉
That explains it! Thanks so much for your reply! You know what, I keep watching this video over and over again and always learn something new. Thanks so much for teaching me! :)
How did you learn to solo like that?
10:25-11:00
Is there a book that can teach you this? What scales are you using?
This is a long story.. Basically what I teach through the Jazz Piano Step-by-Step Course. (Not a quick-fix)
@@Gjermund-Sivertsen thank you for the feedback

@@Gjermund-Sivertsen thank you so much man, i liked all your teaching, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
👍👍👍
Bass player = unreal (literally? I'm so confused!)
Umm . . . starting at 9:47 either you have invisible fingers or you're lip-synching (finger-siynching!) to the wrong tune.
Thanks for your comment. I'm not sure what you mean. Maybe UA-cam was out of sync? I've not dubbed myself. That's for sure ;)
If you look at your right hand just after that time mark, it is obviously not playing the chord sequences that are audible in the sound track-the left hand matches the soundtrack, but not the right hand. Which leads me to surmise that you overdubbed the sound on top of the video or vice versa.

I already know this stuff. Good luck learning noobs! Lol!
