THANK YOU! I was honestly feeling rather embarrassed that I've stripped out like 3 Phillips head bits recently. I know how to use a drill, I know how to do so many things, but I've never seen screw lube used. Even in 17 years with a carpentry contractor as a spouse. I got so aggravated last night installing the mirror on my dresser because I had like 4 screws do that to me> definitely drilled into HARD wood, and now I have my confidence back that it was simply I didn't know there was a better method and not that I was doing something wrong. I would give you a hug right now if I could I'm so very thankful for this insanely simple tip. (I have some shelves to install next and this will definitely come in handy)

When I was growing up, my dad taught me to drag the threads of the screw across a bar of soap. Today, many people opt to use liquid soaps like body wash and pump hand soap. If you need to get the job done, and you don't have any of this sort of specialized screw lubricant available, you can use: bar soap, a liquid soap like hand soap, body wash, dish soap; wax from a "crayon", a candle, or canning wax (or beeswax if available). Some will be more effective than others, and some will be messier than others, but depending on the application, and how you want your final finish, it may not matter much.

Very important, especially installing locks with 4 inch screws through a door jamb into the studs! Unlubricated, I have had them bind, and then had a hard time even trying to get one to back out! In a pinch, a bar of soap is great, or a candle, even just oil of some kind. Enjoyed seeing talk on the topic of driving a screw deeply, and how much easier it is if you lubricate it!
And up on a ladder, nails in old wood... In a pinch, rub the nail through your hair to pick up some oil, then drive that nail in a little easier! Not often used, but I have done it a few times!

Hi, it's funny you would talk about Chapstick because as a DIYer I may not have heard of screw lube but I have heard of using Chapstick,candle wax, or surfboard wax to put on your screws before you use them. I have tried those ideas an they also work well if you don't have screw lube. But thanks so much for telling us about the screw lube. THANK YOU! I couldn't figure out why I was constantly getting cam-out when trying to drill screws. I saw so many shows and videos where people just drive them right in without even a pilot hole and started to wonder why it seems everyone is capable of driving a screw except me. Even with pilot holes I get slippage with Robertson screws. That shouldn't happen. I'm going to try this screw lube. I suspect things will go much better. By the way, even with really bad cam out, I've chewed up bits but never had a Robertson screw strip. Just a tip for those South of the boarder.

Other than what were already mentioned, a high quality bit with an impact driver would help too. Screws with square and star drives don’t cam out as much or don’t cam out at all. Pre drill is faster if you have a drill and an impact driver, IMO. With that said I had a few screws I wasn’t able to back out even using an impact bit and an 18V contractor grade impact driver with something like 120 ft-lb of torque. Good video, I use lube too (candle wax, soap) in tough situations.

Oh! My! Gosh! Where has this been all my life?!?!!!! I cannot tell you how many screws I've had to cuss and back out because they bound up and stripped. Thankyouthankyouthankyou!
Anything that can lubricate is ok generally. Be especially careful when using grease or anything which may stain decorative wood eg oak. When I was an apprentice joiner at CWS Shopfitting UK, we used tallow. My dad, who was an expert joiner most of his life, would, if doing an impromptu job, would draw the screw through his hair which was Brylcreemed. I've used butter and have a wax candle in my toolbox (just draw the screw thread across it).
Phillips drive screws were developed to "cam-out" on purpose for the auto industry. Robertson (square drive) typically have a slight taper making it subject to cam-out under high torque. Most larger deck screws are now using a star drive (Torx) recess.
What also helps is new driver bits. For a phillips once the bit starts to skip, just replace it. You most likely damaged the sharp edge. You can buy a package of driver bits. The other are Torx-head screws. I swear those can take a beating. Alos once you get near the end, slow down the drill, but keep the pressure on. I'll remember the paste, or soap.
+Paul Bevillard There are Philips bits with ribs or flutes in/on them, think of horizontal lines that run up from the tip. These work great in getting previously damaged screw heads to back out stuck screws "Slip-Resistant Phillips Bits" Also known as ACR® bits, ribs forged into the wings of each bit bite into the screw recess to reduce stripping of the screw and bit. thanks for another helpful video. i've seen you before but i don't remember what the topic was. it really irritates me when i see all these people drilling screws in like there's nothing to it and of course they never bind and the bit never slips out. needless to say they don't drill pilot holes or use lubricant either. i guess God just loves them or something. i came here just now after trying to replace door lock strike plates with 3" screws. i thot i was so smart because i'm using stainless steel since i figured it was more durable (and if i used "regular" screws they'd probably brake off halfway in) but of course i'm managing to strip out those heads too. next i guess i'll try a pilot hole and hope that doesn't make it easier for some jerk to eventually kick the door in, defeating the whole purpose. if i still have trouble, as i always do, i may try paraffin or maybe go out and get the product you're talking about. just what i need, more junk around the house.
What's left over soap? *don't mind me. I'm a soap maker so I'm just being silly. Ok. But> haey-o I've got plenty of soaps around the house to put to yet another use then! Lol
The other issue I have found when working with long screws without waxing is the screw will heat up from the friction and possibly snap. Nothing sucks worse than driving a 4-5" screw and having it snap at the flush line (surface) of the wood where you can't get a grip with a pair of locking pliers.
Great simple tip. Paraffin or regular candle wax might also be a substitute. Will make sure I leave a lube-tube in my drill bag for the next challenging drive.

I will be screwing 2x10 splices to 2x10s that are fixed, or already nailed down. Do I start the screws in the splices or start the screws into the 2x10s that are already nailed in place? Thank you.
Nice! Thanks for the heads up. Just stripped out the heads of screws. No idea why. I made sure to fit the bit to the screw first and Predrilled the holes. I am putting it in compost wood. What happened!? I am at a loss! And they stripped out only half way in! Anyone with ideas?
i live in belize and our first house was wood, lots of screws, nails as well. the guys building it carried a bar of soap around with them for the same reason.
Phillips head just isn't good enough in some cases, it's easy to strip as you demonstrated. But then, I'll bet a decent impact driver with sufficient pressure would have sent that screw straight in. Understand, these fasteners are not designed to be inserted and removed repeatedly. Good tips, thank you.
+Lee Ann Steinmetz I wouldn't recommend Vaseline as it may stain the wood and radiate out from screw. This can be detrimental if you are trying to stain in preventing permeation of stain into the wood grain. It can even affect top coats like Polyurethane in the areas where the Vaseline has permeated to on the surface. In a pinch I have used an old candle although it doesn't work as well as other waxes.
Hey Leah,...thanks for the tip. That's pretty handy to have because I get tired of drilling pilot hole. This will certainly save me a lot of time on my projects. I didn't even know they make this stuff. I went to "Lowes" looking for this "Screw Lube" and they said they don't carry it. Where did you purchase your Screw Lube from?

I always keep an old bar of soap in my toolbox for this reason. Rub the threads along the bar and you’re golden.

I’ve made some fairly hard carnauba and bee's wax polish, I might give that a try.

The wax ring used for setting toilets works great. Just scratch the screw across the ring and go for it.

+Lee Ann Steinmetz I wouldn't recommend Vaseline as it may stain the wood and radiate out from screw. This can be detrimental if you are trying to stain in preventing permeation of stain into the wood grain. It can even affect top coats like Polyurethane in the areas where the Vaseline has permeated to on the surface.
In a pinch I have used an old candle although it doesn't work as well as other waxes.
I usually wet the screw in my mouth. I know is disgusting but it works.

I uses soap bar for the screws. works good or wax. anything that lubes it.
You can buy Bees wax at any feed store. That stuff works wonders...

Hey Leah,...thanks for the tip. That's pretty handy to have because I get tired of drilling pilot hole. This will certainly save me a lot of time on my projects. I didn't even know they make this stuff. I went to "Lowes" looking for this "Screw Lube" and they said they don't carry it. Where did you purchase your Screw Lube from?
Purchased mine from Rockler Woodworking........ bees wax works just as well.
