- I can see them as the underdogs if anything, i'm not a big of the opera sound to modern day music but they have a good voice nontheless. I think their biggest competitor is that other male group which i don't think they can beat out...but we'll see how the audience feels about them. B

Crescendos, decrescendos . . . terms I never thought I would hear on a musical entertainment show. It's refreshing to see judges (not sure about Nicole) who are classically trained in music and appreciate groups that attribute and incorporate their success to the fundamentals. It's just about being born with dancing skills, a good voice, and charisma since all those go out the door when your in front of people who know how to perform to the highest degree.
The fact that it didn't even _occur_ to me that they had no beatboxing blows my mind. Their performance was so captivating and vibrant just with regular voices. Amazing!
I remember watching this live lol I had it saved to my dvr. One of my favorite performances ❤
Personally, I think it was The Persuasions (Jerry Lawson's first group) was the reason that everyone was there. They may not have invented true a cappella that equals "in the style of the church", but they certainly did invent modern a cappella, the first step to what we're seeing now. The Persuasions inspired Boyz II Men, Rockapella and Take 6, the three most prominent a cappella groups of our time. Those guys made a cappella cool and got everyone interested.
Still one of favorite performances from the Sing-Off.
Mine too!
I cant stop watching!!!!! It's like a vortex of AWESOMENESS that i keep getting sucked into!
I love Shawn Stockman!!! I loved him in Boyz II Men and I love him now!!
Great job!! I love watching this song and all the other ones over and over.
How did the lead singer nail Mika’s voice so good?! It’s unrealistic.
Replay, replay, replay! ^_^
Love the turn at 2:54! That, and the whole performance.
They were amazing!
I am STILL angry that they were kicked off last night! They are way better than 3 of the groups that are on there! I was so excited that they did this song! I LOVE Mika!
jesus, those harmonies are tight
@MrAppleMac513 Me too. The original members of their group were the first a cappella group, not them.
The dude with red hair, i forget his name, but he did a concert for me and my friends. He's a really nice guy and a phenomonal singer.
They killed it :)
i love how they sing this song. much better than the original. i think. GO BRENNAN!
They are not the first a Capella group... barbershop singing started before they were even started
I made my prom tuxedo based on what they wear :3
I like the lead singers voice. And that's it.
so sad. if only people would go back in time and realize the amazing history the whiffenpoofs have. my dad got me to appreciate music and how to sing with just my voice because of songs sung by the whiffenpoofs. so sad. they are poor little lambs who have lost their way ... just like the kipling poem they sing as their anthem.
This is BRILLIANT.
was awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Is his voice even real?
@MrAppleMac513 Do you know another group that's done acapella for 102 years?
Shameless puns.
Loved it.
3:31 -3:33 O snapp. someones feeling himself hahah LIKING IT!
See the first half of season 4 of West Wing, which, for the record, episode 11 of which brought me here
I love this performance, and I've actually listened to it 2 or 3 times a day since I discovered it a week ago.
That said, I don't think these guys had a chance from the beginning because their style is just too different from what the music industry wants these days. Their sound and especially their choreography (what there was of it) was too patrician to be appreciated by a wider proletariat audience.
Brennan Caldwell kicked this song's ass, though.
can we just talk about how much sassy this man has? because i can't even.
I've only got one thing to say about this:
What did I just see?
lol love it
Guys in coattails...nothing better. Still one of my favorite performances.
I really loved this performance. it is a shameful thing that ppl don't appreciate true musicianship. They may not have won but they definitely would've brought a touch of class to this competition rather than a bunch of bumping & grinding & androgenous looking folk shimmying across the stage all the time.
Brennan is an amazing singer:) really sad they got kicked off...they were one of the best:)
does anyone know the name of the song @ the 0:37 mark?
i love how their idea of "having fun" is playing golf
@Defjams1991 The Whiffenpoofs were the first A Capella group to be recognized. If you were good enough to qualify (no, not everyone who auditions is accepted) you would be proud too.
@funnychick52 he has the type of singing like dave matthews and bruce springsteen its a southern style its not rapping or the kind of singing u hold a note to but yes he can sing he knows what he's doing thats why he's their in the first place along with nicole sherzinger and of course the great shawn stockman
Love how Sean called that one guy out by being sarcastic. Ha They did NOT invent a capella, the first group did.
Is it just me or the kid with glasses looks like Dwight from the Office?
bituco94, Thank goodness I’m not the only one thinking that!
Did Sing Off keep going?
I never watched again after they pitched the Whiffinpoofs.
it's like a frat that's musical
I actually like the Whiffenpoofs, they're entertaining! Even if they're a bit smug! lol
What opera? I've always heard a lot of pre mass media Poofs music, hymns, folk songs, 1909 pop... What opera is the poster talking about? They sing in English. And Satchmo did a lot of the Poof songbook. His taste is like Lagerfeld on a jacket - indisputable. BTW, Yale takes smart poor people, Daddy's money endows big scholarships.
for pretentious tux-wearers, that was super-fun. :-P
@rasenganshippuden Definately. I totally see it.
@TickleMeElmo55
I mean it's "not" just about being born with . . . .
I think they got voted off b/c that guy came across REALLY arrogant in the beginning.
Yes! Totally agree. The judges dump hubris pretty fast.
they were good group, but it bugged me that he said they "invented" a cappella
I hate this song but dang, they did it more than justice!
@batmanhatguy
Ehm... there was a asian guy witht hem you know...
I agree that white tie & tails IS inordinately powerful - ask any woman -- there is just something HOT about a "sharp dressed man" has to be FITTED TO PERFECTION crisp and soft in all the right places but it is the MEGA TURN ON the only thing close is removing it one piece at a time
mrduckbear11 it's not opera style it's Chorale Style.
I think these judges don't quite know the history here.
@ 3:29 mark, I wanna punch whoever laughed.
so sad they didn't win :/
With committed there... no chance in hell
That was supposed to come across as sarchasm...
Heheh the conductor guy made them lose in my opinion.
Shawn, dont waste your sarcasm on these guys, they dont understand it. The soloist reminds me of Willem Dafoe's character in Boondock Saints. They need to stay in their towers at Yale counting Daddy's money and leave us normal ppl alone.
drewcruz1 you're a clown. This particularly whiff class/group was awesome. Personal taste is one thing but to say they are not "normal" is a ridiculous comment
Isn't it ironic that I thought the so-called arrogant guy was being sarcastic? Perhaps it was Shawn that didn't get him. And you sound so ignorant that I almost feel sorry for you that you weren't educated at Yale!
they really werent that good i mean they did the song justice yes but i think those judges know what they doing i mean shawn stockton nicole sherzinger and ben folds all can sing and know what their talking about
"Everyone will be expected to be good. The Whiffenpoofs are going to be expected to be great."
Yeah, that's not demeaning at all. Poor Whiffenpoofs and PitchSlapped. You were made to sound so conceited about your art.
(Perhaps you shouldn't say pretentious things, so that the production team can't use your own sound bytes against you.)
there voices have tone and are in perfect pitch, yet they still sound atrocious.
Is it just me, or when that guy Stefan talks you just want to punch him in his pretentious face?
Wow... I cannot express how much I disliked that...
What if I told you there was a button for that.
hey u get outta town charlie brown
Wow... impressive performance, but they were painted in a really bad light. It's like the producers all said "oh, Ivy? Lets use the most pretentious sound bytes and shots that we can." And yes, Ivy-leaguers can be pretentious, but you shouldn't just assume that they are.
I don;t think they did Mika justice--too stiff and too organized. Not Mika at all. But they sounded alright.
really awesome, but the asian is creepy as hell.
I don't like the lead singer's voice.
it's annoying and pitchy imo.
They should've picked a diff song.
they are crazy obnoxious
lord, pretentious much!
@batmanhatguy
Ehm... there was a asian guy witht hem you know...
