There are videos on here you can find out how big a hole has to be to allow smoke through. I know you can stack the large X's to make a pretty cool chimney and the smoke goes straight up. Deathsquitos and bats both have low life. I think if they tried to get inside through the chimney, they would catch fire and go poof. The outside opening is high so put the inside opening low so they have to fly diagonal over the flames. Just throw a wood beam on the ground so the livestock doesn't wander into the fire.
Yes we learned the hard way bats can get into your chimney if you don't plan for them. The only thing I would be worried about is that camp fires and things take damage now when they damage mobs.
