So far, she's my favorite Master. I really like how she's ironically insane. I need to watch more of Classic Who though, so I can see the previous reincarnations a bit more.
I thought about that many times but I'm not sure if I can ever watch the Doctor who without post 2000 special effects and Murray Gold's background musics. I know the plots of the classic who had a lot of great stories but it's pretty hard to actually watch it as a modern viewer considering many scenes simply looked a bit "silly" in modern viewers' eyes even though they could be very classic.
The old school Masters always remind me of that hilarious holodeck program in Star Trek: Voyager, where the bad guy is Professor Chaotika. Classic dark haired, mustache-twirling Dastardly fellow.
Infernalicon yeah it does but most skilled actors can find a way to do it mean look at the times when you see and acted like Brent Spiner playing and emotionless character has to be hard not to laugh at a joke that you actually think is funny
Capaldi smiling slightly isn't an accident - IMO it's because he thought the Master was dead. After all, if you thought your childhood friend died, you'd smile too when they came back. No matter how much the Master does to defeat the Doctor, the Master is still the only other Time Lord in existence (at the time of this episode anyway - Hell Bent hadn't happened yet).
@@Infernalicon I think he was smiling for a brief moment because his friend was alive. But then it turned to horror when he realised that the Master was back
Michelle Gomez is awesome! She played her part, well, “Masterfully”. That wasn’t an intended pun but there was no other word to adequately describe her performance! She’s just so FUN!!!
Apparently they had intended for Rory to be the master when he had returned from that time wound, instead of as a centurion; but there were scheduling conflicts to do with Matt Smith
Not my name Somehow that makes sense, since the cracks in time were originally caused, not just by the Doctor's TARDIS exploding, but also the time lords trying to break back in to the universe. So if Rory was absorbed by the crack, then perhaps he would have somehow ended up back in Gallifrey, and the Master would have stolen his body like before. It kind of makes more sense then him somehow being written out of existence then all of a sudden, he is an auton with all his memories intact in 200 AD
I thought Michelle Gomez was absolutely brilliant as the Master. (look at me, I'm using British phrases. I'm American, what am I doing?) It seems as if she has been dropping subtle hints that she's going to reprise the role and I really hope she does. She's one of my favorite incarnations.
Arsenal Referring to her as "absolutely brilliant." At least, I've only ever heard British people use that phrase. It's definitely not a common one in West Virginia.
It's not solely British but it does have an air of Britishness about it. Now if you can start to refer to "pants" as "trousers", what goes under them as pants (generally male) or knickers (female), a woman's bag as a "handbag" and a "purse" as the female equivalent of a wallet; kept inside the handbag! Then you are well on your way to speaking better English than a lot of proper Brits ;) (Oh, and call an elevator a "lift"!) It has always amused me how such simple changes to a word can have such different meanings. Tell a British women she has lovely pants and she'll think you've been peeking up her skirt! I'm sure you can work out the reaction yourself....
Michelle Gomez, my first Master, has not finished her run yet, so I won't judge her yet in comparison to the other versions. But as far as the others go, Delgado and Ainnley did no wrong. Jacobi, as brief as he was, was pretty good. Simms is mixed for me, and the less said about Eric Roberts, the better.
Michelle Gomez has certainly made the character interesting again. I've hated every version since Anthony Ainley passed away. But I kind of like this new Missy!
Say what you will about the genderflip thing (I do admit I was worried at first as there are many ways to do this horribly wrong), Gomez does capture the role pretty well; Her costume/looks are otherwise pretty much basic Master, she has everything the Master needs to have, the banter, the same genre-savy creativity as the Doctor which none of the other villains really have, a combination of refined and campy while still coming off as threatening and potentially suave, the sense that you hve two giants of the same sort standing above the crowds when she and the Doctor are in the same scene, the contrast between "charismatic sociopath" and "abrasive hero" (The scene where the Doctor tried to warn everyone of the cybermen, but the Master basically looked like the more reasonable of the two and passed them off as stage performers... but also how she talks poor Osgood into getting close to her) I like how we saw a return of the "moral disagreement" (She genuinely tries to tempt him, and there's a narrative underlining of their differences) and "challenging chess game" (The Doctor annoys her right back at times. "Piece of cake!" ) dimensions that were a bit missing during Simm's tenure without compromising on the "delightfully nuts" or "lingering tenderness" aspects. It felt like a fitting continuation of the character (Turns out the "reconcilliation" from End of Time did stick, but she is just as destructive when she's trying to be nice) and I've enjoyed this incarnation's partcular trollish streak.
As confused as I was by the gender-swap (not that I really need an explanation, cause let's face it...it's sci fi, not reality...things don't need an explanation to be accepted), I very much love the Master as the Mistress. She is deliciously insane and seductively evil (I almost wanted to root for her) and I think the Master's weird fascination/crush on the Doctor all these centuries is a brilliant undertone to add to Missy's character, as the flirting and chemistry between them made her THAT MUCH more evil and devious. And also strangely sympathetic to the audience (at least for me, anyways), like if perhaps she wasn't crazy and evil, she'd make a wonderful companion to the Doctor because she's fun and brilliant at the same time. I also appreciate the fact that her costume is out of place, looking like a perpetual Mary Poppins (as we all know Mary is a Time Lady in our headcannons :P). Like another nod to the fans.
I got to meet her once at Megacon a few years back and she's such a lovely person! Also, way more petite than I realized. Tiny little thing! But wonderful. I hope to see her in more stuff.
I feel that this particular genderswap started quite an interesting debate and I am very dissapointed in the way a lot of fans argue. First - before starting a debate, get your facts straight. I myself haven't seen all the episodes (yet), so I've read like every possibly important article on DW wikia and other websites to understand the series as a whole and Master the best I can. Lot of fans simply ignore Classic Who which seems like willingly forgetting two thirds of someone's life. Come on, people, it is the same show! You don't have to watch it, no one forces you, but please, do not ignore it. And do your homework. Secondly - do you realize what storm would making the epizode explain everything bring? That is not how good shows work. They offer explanations but not in a form of hour long power point presentation ("Hi, I'm Missy. I used to be the Master and now I will tell you exactly how this happened and how gender in Time Lords work in general. Then I will kindly tell you about all my plans and motivations, reveal my feelings and teach you how to wear funny hats.") Moffat might explain. "Might" is the key word here. If you knew Classic Doctor Who (and combined it with your knowledge of New Who), you would know Master's return is explained very rarely. And one last note - is it just me or many of fans' reactins are sexist and misogynistic? Becoming a woman as a form of punishment? Seriously? What century is this?
I agree wholeheartedly. The Master becoming a woman is NOT the end of Doctor Who, and those who think so may be a bit sexist. As long as he/she is a good match for the Doctor and twisted all the way, I'm all for it.
***** Capaldi was in a episode the 10th Doctor, and he played the Doctor same thing with Colin Baker as the 6th Doctor who played a Time Lord during the 5th Doctor era.
Come on Missy one last bow with the 13th doctor then regenerate. These 2 are soulmates a true yin and yang and their episodes together no matter the actors are always fantastic
Best character ever introduced since the reboot, it’s a tragedy that they didn’t utilize her Version of Master more often in more episodes, and dam is she sexy!
I hope season 11 or 12 will bring back Missy, or at least some other form of the Master/Mistress. After all, she is rather fantastic at cheating death from what we've seen, no matter how impossible the situation. 😊
Lünk I think the signal stopped being emitted since Rassilon and the Council managed to arrive to Earth. So I too, will make an assumption and say the Master doesn't hear the drums anymore.
Before 13th Doctor, Missy was the Master whose appearance at the time of introducing to the 12th Doctor caused little to no controversy, and it was unclear the renegade timelord underwent an unseen regeneration.
Is the series 8 soundtrack coming out in stores? I've been looking for it on CD but I haven't found any sign of it yet. Best soundtrack in the new series so far, and the style's kinda reminiscent of Miner Wars 2081 (a game which seems to have its own Who connections...).
I'm really worried about Gomez's future on dr who with the change of showrunner, she's such a fantastic master that I want to see her keep playing the role for a long time.
I was very glad to see a female master. A very bold move and I was stunned by the revelation in Dark Water. While I don't think the doctor should be a woman Id like to see a black doctor. It's time and I can think of several great actors to take on the role. Idris Elba, Paterson joseph, Colin salmon or adwale akinnuoye agbaje
I think changing the Master to Missy was a real good Idea and the part was cast spot on... Michelle Gomez nailed the part bring the Master up to date with style
My ranking of the Masters; Roger Delgado Anthony Ainley Michelle Gomez Geoffrey Beavers Peter Pratt Sir Derek Jacobi Eric Roberts John Simm Sacha Dhawan
Wow, the number of people who want a female Doctor is surprising. Well, I think they should give us one. ...and make her like 13 years old, just to throw everybody off.
I mean it would work... But that I think would really kill the interest ordinary people have. Somehow, I find the idea of a male companion to a female doctor, a bit wierd, even though in real life, the Man to woman companionship that already exists is wierd. I know this sounds kind of sexist to some people, but it's not! I myself would quite like a test episode of a female doctor, just to see how it goes! I think it would still throw most of the main target group (teenage boys) a bit off, and by what I'm saying, the girls are perfectly happy with a Doctor as a man. A bit like the Ghost Busters reboot. All great for representation, but not really feasible in the long run. If it would be a woman, I say someone like Missy/Michelle Gomez would be pretty awesome!
Thisath Ranawaka I stand by what I said about the 13 years old thing. Missy herself even said that he used to be a little girl, and the Doctor confirmed this in Hell Bent. Plus, Moffat is constantly complaining about people "politicizing" the Doctor's regenerations. He might do it and be like "you wanted it, here you go!"
I've watched Doctor Who for around half of Ten's run and all of Eleven's and Twelve's runs and I've seen the episode with Ten and the Master but yet I literally only just realised that Missy is the Master. That or I completely forgot it lol!!! Mind=Blown
Just came from Series 12. Got to say, from John Simm, to Michelle Gomez, and then to the latest Sacha Dhawan, it has been a streak of great Masters, but my favorite is definitely Michelle!
A Proud SJW I think we should see how Michelle regenerated into Dhahran that would be cool then we could see how she tissue compressed him then regenerated into him
The drumbeat was a signal implanted into the Master's time stream as a signal to help release Gallifrey from the Time Lock / the Time War. I kinda presumed since the Master accomplished this the link ended at that point (or maybe when he sent them back into the Time War) therefore the signal / drumbeats ended at that point.
I really want Gomez to do another video that shows the rest of the Master’s timeline up until Series 10 (when the show ended). I REALLY want her to give a recap of the series 10 finale especially
Wow she could just read all day, something hypnotic about her...
i knowwww
Guess she truly is the Master/ Missy!
Yea lol
Mashallah
She is the Missy. And you will obey her. You will obey her.
So far, she's my favorite Master. I really like how she's ironically insane. I need to watch more of Classic Who though, so I can see the previous reincarnations a bit more.

John Simms is second best
derek jacobi is the best modern incarnation of the master then Missy then Jon Simms
Someone give this woman an award for the best performance of any character EVER!!!
The look of shock and horror when Missy reveals herself to be The Mistress a female regeneration of The Master is priceless.
Looks more to me like capaldi has to try very hard to suppress smiling back at her XD

Missy, the perfect blend of beauty, charm, elegance, and evil. Truly a shame Sladen passed, it would have been fun to see those two face off.
you belong in the corner staring at the wall for this comment..... i didnt need this
Fr
I can't actually believe she's reaching her 50 years. She looks pretty young!
She sounds like she is like 30 years old
Jennifer Lopez is 50 years old now.
Gwen Stefani is 49 years old.
They eat a very careful diet.
Izlemder I KNOW RIGHT!
She's gorgeous
3:41 - I LOVE Capaldi's reaction to this reveal. Absolutly brilliant.
Yeah, he's probably like: OMG! He/she kissed me a few minutes ago!
BMV The Movie Fanatic LOL! No, I look at it as genuine fear.
"I want to see the Universe, not rule it" =))
I believe Pertwee said "not rule it" which makes more sense considering the master wanting to be the master of everything
legocollecter1
I'll go back in Time and listen again =)
legocollecter1
Quite correct =) I'll change it =)
"you dont have to rule the universe just to see it" =))
Tardisius h
I love Gomez as the Master/Missy so so much. She has such a brilliant command of facial expression and annunciation
I don't care what people say, she's the best incarnation of the Master.
Honestly, is there anyone who doesn't agree?
God, I love Michelle Gomez.
Who else wants Missy to comeback?
me
Not me.
There are rumors she is coming back for series nine
ME, ME, ME!
Carla Luz confirmed for series 9, happy to announce
You know, its ashame we never got to see the Master against the 11th Doctor, such a wasted opportunity there

anyone else think that the Master should get his own spin-off Show?

And now, the Master returns
Maniacal, evil, chaotic and scheming

The Spy Master
She looks real purdy in glasses

Best character ever introduced since the reboot, it’s a tragedy that they didn’t utilize her Version of Master more often in more episodes, and dam is she sexy!
Missy is my FAVORITE Master! So want her back!!
Ms Gomez is absolutely brilliant. Love the new twist on The Master.
The thing I love about Missy is that so far in every season with Capaldi she's been in it.
Michelle is just so beautiful, really love her incarnation as the master.
Can't Wait Until The Master Comes Back!! I Think Michelle Gomez Embodies The Master Perfectly! ♡♥
The Delgado original will always be my favorite but I do really enjoy Michelle's interpretation of the Master/Missy.
I love this woman! Her voice and enunciation is gold too!!
I think she is the best incarnation of the Master/Missy yet
Third best. I'd say Delgado and Jacobi will always be the best incarnations.
Second best for me, after Jacobi. I'd so want to see a longer run with him.
hard to go pasthis 2nd incarnation in the late 70's
personal choice i get that ok yea maybe a bit of overkill on my part
I Miss Missy a lot I hope she makes a big comeback.
Love her she’s mad and I love it ahah comical and amusing tbf can’t tell if she’s acting or not tbf
I hope season 11 or 12 will bring back Missy, or at least some other form of the Master/Mistress. After all, she is rather fantastic at cheating death from what we've seen, no matter how impossible the situation. 😊
Can Missy still hear the drumming like her previous male incarnations?
I think the drumming was stopped in the end of time
Lünk We don't know, it was never explained.
lilmattere it's an assumption.
Lünk I think the signal stopped being emitted since Rassilon and the Council managed to arrive to Earth. So I too, will make an assumption and say the Master doesn't hear the drums anymore.
I don't see why she wouldn't
Michelle Gomez is marvelous. Just marvelous.
“He took over the body of a paramedic called Bruce.” 🤣🤣🤣 Gomez could read the phone book and make me fall out.
Gomez has played the best incarnation of Missy/The Master ever, hands down, no comparison.
I love how crazy and funny missy is and on the bright side she makes you laugh before she kills you lol 😂
Before 13th Doctor, Missy was the Master whose appearance at the time of introducing to the 12th Doctor caused little to no controversy, and it was unclear the renegade timelord underwent an unseen regeneration.
Roger Delgado is my favourite Master.
I hope Missy will return despite what happened at 3:51.
So sexy how her eyes dart back and forth and stares into the camera...damn it Missy/Michelle
Now I can’t be the only one to sincerely hope that 13, River and Missy end up in the same room
What about if it was 11
"Seemingly Vaporised" I knew it...I knew it!
I wish we could have had more screen time the Jacobi master... I feel he would have been excellent
I certainly preferred him to John Simm.
She is awesome! I love her facial expressions. She's going to be a fantastic foil for the Doctor!
I would be up for Missy being a recurring villain, like Delgado in the Pertwee era and to some extent, Ainley in the Davison years.
Missy is by far my favorite master incarnation!
Especially when she pushes Claria into the Dalek sewer
John Simm is a boss :) loved him. Also in Life on Mars that show was is great. XD
This helps understand it so much.....THANKS WHO

The way Moffat describes Michelle is perfect: funny. Yet somehow terrifying at the same time.
Delgado is my favorite Master from the original series but Michelle is my favorite now although John Simm was quite good also!
3:06 even before missy, the master's legs looked good in heels :D
Michelle Gomez seems like she would be so much fun to be around.
My friend: describe missy in two words.
Me: delightfully bonkers
Missy was the best incarnation of the master
I'm really worried about Gomez's future on dr who with the change of showrunner, she's such a fantastic master that I want to see her keep playing the role for a long time.
I actually love her as the master - missy, super witty. Hopefully she comes back but this time, in a less rushed story arc.
This was 9 years ago that’s crazy
I LOVE this woman too much! Brilliant and crazy actress!
that most regeneration trauma had to have ben SO AWKWARD

I felt as if they could have done more with the master in the last episode, but oh well to the future!
Missy ain't returning. But she did definitely refined the character
this woman got so much charisma.
"the cyberbrigadier" - not sure if I should love it or hate it :D
Just came from Series 12. Got to say, from John Simm, to Michelle Gomez, and then to the latest Sacha Dhawan, it has been a streak of great Masters, but my favorite is definitely Michelle!
A Proud SJW I think we should see how Michelle regenerated into Dhahran that would be cool then we could see how she tissue compressed him then regenerated into him
omg I want an ebook read by Michelle Gomez! Her voice is hypnotic
Where's Titles On Tuesday?
Whatever happened to the drumbeat that The Master kept on hearing? Why doesn't The Mistress hear it now?
I refuse to believe she's the master. John Simm was just perfect for the role
same here, gno, same here...
Same. JOHN SIMM AND DAVID TENNANT FOR THE WIN!
I'm so glad she's the master (mistress)
What about the Alex Mcqueen incarnation from the Audio dramas Unit Dominion and Dark Eyes 2 & 3? He was brilliant!
I really want Gomez to do another video that shows the rest of the Master’s timeline up until Series 10 (when the show ended). I REALLY want her to give a recap of the series 10 finale especially
How Michelle says that the Master won't be far behind at the end...
I'm scared... ;c
Love you Missy Gomez
When she said Missy I got goosebumps!
I love Michelle Gomez as The Mistress. However to this day my favorite incarnation of The Master is Anthony Ainley. I loved his portrayal.
Oh my I love Michelle even more off screen.
