  • What up FAM! Today we are going to learn how to Make A DM Screen! We rolled nat 20's with this one! I LOVE this screen. It is heavily influenced by Matt Mercer's DM Screen. If you have been following me for a while, you know I love me some Dungeons and Dragons, so this bad boy was an absolute pleasure to build.
    Special Thanks to McKrungle Berry for the request!

    Oh man that is nice. Reminds me of the one I made as a teen. We didn't have a torch so I sprayed lighter fluid on it and set the wood on fire and then stained it. Drilled some holes in some metal strap and screwed it down with round head screws. Filled the slots in with wood putty and painted the strap and screws black. Then used antique looking hinges. Everyone said it looked like an abused treasure chest. Wasn't very portable though. I wonder what ever happened to it?

    One thing I remember someone doing when inlaying wire into wood was slightly wetting the wood. The wood absorbs the water and the cuts you make kinda close up around the wire so it locks into place better.

    I love the magnets; I keep finding ways to use them on all sorts of projects. I once built a screen with a built-in dice tower so I could drop the dice in the top and they roll out on the other side of he screen for all the players to see the roll. I would only use it when the next hit could kill a PC. Really added to the drama. ( and some funny bits too) And someone commented on being too old for D&D, never i say! I play with guys that have been playing since first edition and we still love the game. RL can get tidious AD&D is always an adventure.

    A friend of mine made a similar one, though the front is less castle and more forrest with a few layers of veneer with different green stains to make it look like a woodland. He also took veneer with a laser etcher/cutter to make a deck of solid wood playing cards (Only thing that wasn't wood based in the end was the oil or stain and a polyeurethane coating in the end.
    He also added some panels to the back so about a page length plus a bit is available for vertical and then a notch where you could slot in panels that would slope downwards to the table and a slot at the top for various things.
    Unfortunately, that hit the same issue a lot of the really nice screens have in that they're only really good if you're playing at home because you need to transport them.
    I've wanted one, but after seeing issues with transport, just kept on using my old customizable slot one that I'd gotten a long time ago...I think it was, originally, aimed for Savage Worlds, but it's like a heavier binder material with slots in the front and back for whatever inserts I want. 4 panel horizontal as well

    Love the work, looks professional. A thought about the hinges, though. With the magnets as thin as they are, I could see them getting broken off. What if you centered the magnets in the board and sanded/ routed the edges to match the magnets' profile. The magnets could still touch and would be protected by the rest of the edge.

    This looks awesome, but since you have a plunge router, one neat little upgrade you could make is to make a straight groove on the top edge of the screen, and you could put cards or initiative trackers in there.
    Also, one idea I wanted to try was to make one of the panels have an inset swivel panel so you can attach an image or info to it and flip it around to show the players.

    • @SkillTree
      @SkillTree  4 роки тому +2

      I think you can pull this off with just that and some chisels. Put a piece of tape on a drill bit to mark the depth you need and you can do all the bits I did with the router by just drilling out the wood to that depth like swiss cheese and cleaning it up with a chisel. Also, if you carefully snap the tip off of an X-acto knife I am pretty sure it would make a fine cutter for the inlay bit 😁

    we had a problem with how were stored all of the books to yea the dungeons chest were made it a stand i made to hold all the books in place when we need them there is their too paper and supplies were used were keeping their to use to go to each friend place before we got our own places to play at
    time i had to build my place have a large room we played this into the dungeon master has his own space overlooking the player's table have to use hexagonal grit for the table to 2 x 2 size to the table was built in that shape to different levels can be lowed or raise up too
    stand un used now all of the friends moved on to better lifes and jobs to yea it still here the plan is to have everyone come and play the game again for the weekend to this time the covid had the poison potion lol

Then make swiss cheese out of the material youvwant to remove. Once you have cleared all of the material in the center of that space, clean up the edges with a chisel. Takes a bit longer but how I used to do things like that before I got the router attachment. Hope that helped!

    Hi. I tried to follow your instructions but I had some troubles. First, I used my 8220 cordless Dremel with 650 tip (it seems to me from 8:13 that it is the same you used) but the real problem was the glue. I've tried with Pattex Contact than with a cyanoacrylate glue but I failed. Consequentially, I've chosen to use some hinges. With these, the panels can be easily removed: I lost in aesthetic but not in practicality. I would like to retry but I'm afraid to fail another time. I feel really stupid. How much time did you wait before verifying if the glue would have had effect?
    Second, it was difficult for me to control the Dremel without the guide of its 335 plunge router attachment and I had to used it slowly. Which speed did you set on your Dremel to work the wood? Thank you so much.

    • @SkillTree
      @SkillTree  4 роки тому

      Hello! Hmmm I just used some basic "super glue". Did you rough up the magnets first? Also, the space should be snug for the magnets to fit through so the bond with the glue can be achieved. I agree that the dremel is difficult to control without the plunge attachment. In the video I think I said as much too. Not sure if you are on the discord, hut I would be happy to chat with you at some point to try and work it out if you like. Cheers

    Did you do any sanding? I'm actually trying to make this rn, and my pieces definitely need some sanding

      Hi! Thanks for watching. I say it very quickly at about the 6:19 mark but yes, you definitely want to sand. That will get rid of the glue marks, shine up the inlay, and get the wood looking smooth and even. Good luck!
