A Tour of Christiania in Copenhagen: Experimental Hippie Village
To all you people that don't have their facts right about Christiania
You are not going to get beat up for filming or taking photos in Christiania, only if you film or take a picture towards pusher-street or inside pusher-street, and you are not gonna get beat up unless you don't listen when people tell you to not film or take pictures.
And Christiania is not full of gang members and drug dealers, their is a lot of different types of people, hippie's, students, homeless and literally every type of person, it's a peaceful place where you can relax and smoke weed (if you want) or just maybe go sightseeing or have a little and some food, it's not a low-life shithole like every asshole describes it.
And every Sunday in the summer, there is a thing called Nemoland. It's a concert-like thing where different artists come to play music for the people that live and visits Christiania
Christiania is a great place and if you don't like it then why the fuck are you even watching this video?
Gustav Schu are u Danish?
caitlin jaradi yeah
Gustav Schu cool me 2 i mean også mig
I shot video in Pusher Street. They were having an action day which helped. All you have to do is find one of the more relaxed and less criminal-looking sellers, perferably somebody over 30 and ask politely. All they wanted to do was look through the finder while we were shooting.
Do not buy weed there The people WHO live there made a little government ish thing and they are tired of all The police raids they tell people to buy weed some were Else so The police wont Be looking in Their shit all The time
When i was 19 i had a girlfriend who used to live there, so i went down there every weekend (i am Swedish, and worked in sweden, so i had go go down there on the weekends), then i moved in with her in Christiania when i was 20, and left denmark when i was 22.
It was actually a very problematic lifestyle, a lot of people (including me) was awake 24/7, drinking, taking LSD and act as if there was no tomorrow.
But even though it was problematic, i still miss that time very much sometimes, and the love of my life that i met there.
Its over 40 years ago now.
Thank you for uploading this, it was very nice to to see it again, havent been there since i left Christiania in 1976.
Respect for going in the rain, that's always a more honest view of what a place is like.
Everywhere looks good in the sunshine.
people are really nice there. Never felt threatened or anything. They just smoke some weed, it doesn't bother me.
Imagine not smoking weed
@@oronzocastellano5145 most successful people do not smoke weed
@@swarupav781 not true allot of very important people smoke weed bro
@@swarupav781plenty of successful people smoke weed many successful rappers ,artist , even presidents have smoked marijuana .!
I was there 20 years ago, its an amazing place. I thought Amsterdam was my spiritual home until I went to Christiania!
Same spirit bro 🌝💨
The best joint I've ever smoked! It was sunny, reggae music in the background and the hippie and alternative atmosphere from Christiania. Awesome!
This is a magical place, that I stumbled upon by accident in 2009. When I returned to Copenhagen in 2017, I spent the whole day there !
I went there last month, so beautiful it was. It was a rainy dusk with light rain, I stood beside the bike lane watching the river flows. Impressed me a lot.
I wrote my senior thesis on this place. I was planning on going. Ended up catching a weed case in Eugene, OR when I was $75 bucks short of my ticket. Can't leave the country now. So thank you Gabriel. I needed this. I felt really low this morning and needed this blast from the past.
And now weed is part of the state economy there. Let's add insult to injury
@@MackeyDeeez Yeah its fucked.... The idiocracy is rampant on the west coast of the states. California isn't any better right now.
Damn
I am 14 and i visiter Christiania today. I was offered hash 5 times in 30 minutes
I really like the work this guy is doing. Good insight to what's going on. He wants us to know about the world while he modestly explores it, rock on!
It changed a lot since 1984, when I last went there for supply of the Roskilde Festival.
Darn, it's 40 years ago, I guess I'm getting old, Hahaha!
As I remember Christiania it was a big collective for different artists of all kinds, who liked or liked not to smoke weed. But what i remember it most of it was haven artists, for painters sculptures, photographers and graphite artists
as a dane, i can tell u that cph is beautiful in the summer!
I admire your attempt man.
but you should defiantly come back and do an update on a nicer weekend evening.
Because this video doesn't do christiania justice.
Mohammed MHE haah a cop got shot not long time ago😂
I have to admit no one travels like you. You can make a boring place interesting by the way you think about things. Good stuff.
Awesome, glad to hear it.
If you want to know Christiania, you should go there.
Christiana is anything but boring my brother
went here a couple of days ago.
loved this place 👊
Yupp:) Christiania is a very chill place. Everytime were going to the Roskilde festival we are stopping by each year. Many many happy memories from Christiania, København and Roskilde. I love it. In fact Im moving from Norway to København for a couple of years. Looking soooo forward to that!!!
I was there yesterday afternoon as I had few hours to spend in the city before taking my flight. I had no previous knowledge about that place. Walking around it it felt surreal and magical.
I was there last month and met wonderful people. Had a Christiana beer which was recommended by the local living there.
Great video Gabriel once again you have introduced me to something unique and cool.
My kind of weather, my kind of commune!
- Never heard of the term 'green light district' lol. Interesting.
It is really peaceful there. Bring your kids, relax, no worries. And some good restaurants too
I plan to go there this year. Last year I went to Uzupis in Vilnius, a similar artist area that has mockingly declared independence.
I like how you filmed some of the dealers and kept it in the video haha
You cannot buy any hard drugs in Christiania, only cannabis, all the gangs, allies or enemies, doesn't matter, they all respect the rules of the place, no violence, no weapons and no hard drugs. It's a place where "everybody" can come and be themselves and enjoy the peace. Every Sunday during summer there's live music concerts playing, people are sitting at the grassy areas around the lake, where all the self-made houses are, (which unfortunately wasn't included in this video), and enjoying their beer-n-joints, and their "one time use barbecues", that we danes love so much.
Asger Kofod Christiansen Yeah ok there buddt.
"No weapons"
Except they are the only neighborhood in Copenhagen that had 2 shootings and a grenade attack in the last 10 years....
Shootings have happened all over Copenhagen, but for being such a small neighborhood, Cristiania has a lot of them.
Nørrebro have had more gun violence and more injured and killed. But last two years it have been everywhere, also Jutland, Falster and Malmø in Sweden is really booming. And it´s obvious that there is violence around such a lucrative illegal market. If cannabis was legal things would be very different. Again we can thank our politicians for doing everything wrong and not giving a damn about the country or the population.
I agree, weed isn't really th enemy here... Just like in most places the general population get's fucked for insignificant disobedience while corrupt politicians get away with stealing millions...
I have been here when I was 15 and it was very eye opening
Oh trust me! You have to be there in the summer!
It's a *completely* different experience! It's bustling with nice people and good music.
My brother visits Christiania quite often, and he says that the people there are incredibly welcoming😊
Btw. I've never been to this part of Christiania before? I've only been around the gate/head entrance and all the self-made houses by the lake.
So I guess you were there at a bad time of the year?🤔
I really like your profile pic. I'm assuming you're a follow Danish army???? :)
I was born in Holland but God damn I love Denmark 😍 esp in summer
In christania what i noticed that there was lots of different people and i feel like its a very relaxing place with the music too and smoking a joint there is so nice with a sunset and some music
There are some places where you are not allowed to record and you can actually be assaulted for filming or photography. Just so you know so you wont make that mistake another time:)
Thank you a lot it's a very good remind for me.
LOL you went in backwards my dude 😂😂😂 most tourists don't even see that back part 🎖️
It was fantastic watching this video!
Cool. ✌️
I have to be honest, the video doesn't do the place justice. But I think your experience there is the same as many tourists. It's not enough just to walk through, you need to be interacting. There's a lovely cafe there in the summer by the Pagoda and the tiny house examples are part of the charm. We use to ride through there on horses to get away from bikes and traffic and there's lots of community projects going on.
Be there on a summery sunday. And you'll see how crowded and cozy people is - doing the weekly concert at Nemoland.
Or just another regular good weather day, anything can happen on Christiania. If you're chilling by yourself, you might end up with 2-3 new friends doing a regular day. People is more open minded and straight forward themselves, compared to the EU!
I am borned and raised 100% dane so speaking by experience / I recommend you to visit Christiania and Tivoli and you are basicly good to go. Dont waste time on the little mermaid. It's a minor lady statue of stone in a 10/8 human scale, several people have been pissing and shitting on it. And you'll end up seeing more chinese people with selfie sticks than the actually statue.
You do some great videos man some of my favourite travel guides are yours , if we ever cross paths il buy you a beer
Cool, thanks, I'll take it. No beer where I am in India right now because it's a holy town. I could use one.
Gabriel Traveler haha awesome 😎 stay safe mate and have a good trip will look forward to see the next videos ☺️
Hey Gabriel, great video man! I just have to say it's an absolute shame that you didn't get the experience of a sunny day in Christiania, it's literally the same difference as night and day! You HAVE to redo your visit man 😉
Thanks. Yeah if I go back sometime I'll have to return on a sunnier and more happening day.
I just read an article on Seedsman's blog linking me to this video, great stuff Gabe!
In November 2002 I visited Christiania. It doesn't look like it changed much since I was there.
Wondering if they have electricity and running water from the city? 🤔
Nothing wrong with living differently than majority. They may be a happier group in general?
Nice video man!
Just love the end that you recorded that. Yo CPH! 😁👋
Always interesting to see how utopian communities get ambushed along the way and not run out the way expected. I noticed the audio was cutting out.
Go there when summer ....
Been in 3 freestates Valparaiso, Sydney and now Christiania for a couple days ago which was amazing.
YES i accidenttly filmed and there were no threats and no attacks against me, some guy polite told me to erase the film, we shaked hands after that and went each way, bought some green lollipop and thats all i remember *XD*
be back soon Denmark!
I love your videos!!
REMINDS ME OF LA PERLA IN SAN JUAN PR. WHICH IS MORE DANGEROUS THO. DEF NO FILMING ALLOWED
I know I am late to the party, but you didn't enter from the main gate which states that "you are now leaving the European Union." From there is the main street or center where the cafes etc are. It looks as if you walked outside of this main area in the residential part.
Cause you cant film there or you might get your phone smashed by the masked security guys that keep an eye on who enters pusherstreet .. peace
Excellent! The colors of your footage is a bit off in the blue direction. In real life, there is more yellow & red..
I guess digital photography is sometimes tricky regarding light & color..
And the area you are not supposed to film is also where people go.
People want drugs, and the least harmful drug is cannabis or marijuana.
So, all the coffee bars, shops and bakeries etc. are also out of frame...
It's no big deal, though.
It's just a lot of tourists and residents, copenhageners, danes, folks.
One of the most lively places in the world.
The flower of our tiny country.
Where bees come for honey
and bring back pollen as well...
Some people say it is a dangerous place.
And some say the moon is flat.
Just wait 'till they hear about the earth!
get here in the summer.. noone is outside in this weather.
maybe u can move to paris or ny and try to get an art carrer going ..
Very cool community but that graffiti makes it look more like the inner city hood, odd.
Hoods in Scandiavia doesn’t look like that. They have many old communist blocks
THANKYOU...
i need to know where that "honey over bitches" art is. Im going to denmark to pick up queens.
I like the no violence policy in Christiania
I live there. It's really just a very run down "hippie" area within the city, that is kind of left to it's own like its stuck in time. It was originally an army base back in the 70's, until it was left and some squatters moved in. You will find all kinds of people in there on a warm summer day, from bums begging, tourists, students, families with kids, to the wrong kind of crowd wearing skimasks. It's kind of like a small city within a city. If you are in there to buy hash, do not EVER record the area where the dealing is going on. Many of these people are in some way or another connected with organized crime, and you will get thrown out on your ass, or catch a beating. You will be left alone to go about your business if you mind your own. There are no hard drugs to be found, at least officially and out in the open on tables and stands, like the hash and marijuana. The hash market is tolerated by the police to a certain point, but police raids do happen.
I mean, It would be a shame to say that the police is tolerating pusherstreet. it is widely known, that they show up at least a couple times a week, raiding and arresting as much as they can. they don't go after the buyers on the raids, but there has been sooo many incidents of innocent standbyers getting tumbled over or pushed to the ground, by the circus clowns they call 'taskforce pusherstreet'. If you're an 'obvious' tourist, you'll probably be left alone.
It's really sad this video has so many views compared to others, not due to any wrong intentions of the videographer, but simply because this video gives a totally blank view into what the community is like
how do i create Christiania here in my Mr Rogers Neighborhood?
Well its hard but if you’re determined you can do a lot of great things
Comrades, Guns, First aid training
These are your basics that you need a great start is stickering and poster bombing before you can start a revolution and create an autonomous region you need to convince the folks around you
Don’t talk about revolution or anarchism if thats your thing talk about food water and shelter the Zapatistas don’t call themselves libertarian socialist even when in practice thats what they are talk to your community especially minorities because they can really side against the oppressors
They say it takes 3% of the population to fight on the streets to win a revolution but that 3% has to have support its not obvious how much but if you’re talking small scale the whole community basically
It was only 4 or 5 months ago now Chaz or capitol hill autonomous zone happened so we know its well possible and considering in order to do this you have to fight the police you need anti police and anti racism to be a key part of your proposal
If you can gather support then you’ve gotten through the first hurdle now you need to prepare a central planning area is important once you succeed this is where your community can go to talk about concerns and needs that have to be fulfilled research Zapatistas Chaz and Rojava as some guides
If you can do all this then its a matter of declaring your region to the world which will come with police so unlike Christiana you’ll have pretty obvious armed borders that need to be able to say who comes in and out this is a revolution its messy
If you get to here I’m sorry but theirs not a guarantee it will last more than a couple weeks but if you can make it for longer than even just Chaz then you’ll be an inspiration to every revolutionary fighting for a life free from starvation and homelessness
Did any of this make any sense I’m not sure but good luck comrade
The womem in Christiania are beautiful !!
im am from denmark and can say that it rains alot in denmark
ive been there i just call it free town
Lucas Graham is from here
zak k Yea! I’m starting to get the lyrics now! The beginning when he was a child was about him growing up in Freetown Christiania!
Cool thanks!
I love this channel and this vid makes me wonder why the benelux countries are so perfect? :)
Anyone else here from that tiktok
Kool video!
Don't give 🆙 at Reynold's... 🚲🚶⛪💠🚅✋😧
i want to live here
Would love to visit
I just love at 1.15 how you make that cyclist just disappear with one wave of your hand?!
Ha ha ha, I hadn't noticed that! I'm a jedi and I didn't even know it.
Nice check! Did u found some hash around? cheers
You guys think they can pull this off in the United States in a place like Seattle?
Like a commune? It does happen I mean this comment would be right before after or during chaz I’m guessing
But its harder because the united states is very anti socialist/anarchist/communist and communes are a big part of that so idk you’d probably see a lot more civilian army type stuff if it were to happen
But you could theoretically go out to absolute nowhere USA and find some farmers who sympathised with the cause and set up a commune
Sorry I’m not sure any of this makes sense but a commune/autonomous region will look different in every country just based off situation
It must suck having people film your house all day every day.
Gabe did you make many autoflower memories in Christiana?
as long they dont let any southern refugees in, the town and women shall live in peace c:
Who’s here from that tik tok video?
I’ve been there omg
you didn't even get to see the best things :( there are plenty of stalls selling hash, jewelry, food and many other things.
You can't videotape the area with the hash stalls, etc. I walked through there though.
great!
I'm coming to copenaghen for new year's eve... there are still hash stalls in christiania? because I read that in 2016 people closed them and by reading on internet I'm not really understanding how things work now :)
Yes, there were hash stalls when I was there.
Alessandro Iacobelli the stalls were shut down for a smaller period after 2 persons got shot outside the place. The market is open today and it will be forever and price and quality is top notch compared to other countries. Copenhagen can definitely compete with Amsterdam in some areas. I think it´s cheaper and you can buy many cannabis products like hash, weed, skunk, concentrates, oil, edibles and pre-rolled joints.
And don´t be alarmed about violence, I´ve lived most of my life in Copenhagen and I never see anything, just read about it in the media. Malmø in Sweden seem to have much bigger problems, USA is definitely less safe due to crime and the police and UK got it´s problems as well. It´s like worrying about terror, which statistically you will have a very little chance of experiencing.
And the police have never been able to do anything about the illegal market. When they raid it normally take an hour or two, then they flee and the stalls are open and fully supplied again. You can actually buy cannabis while the police are out there. The police is being ridiculed there and with good reason. It´s very costly both economically and they have beaten up people for nothing like in Spain, Italy and Greece. But if you are there and they are as well, just keep a distance and wait till they leave. Sometimes it´s quite funny to watch them "work" and lots of people gather around them and film and shout obscenities.

Im surprised u didnt get beaten or threatened for filming lmfao whenever im in there i see tourists getting in trouble, even youngsters from denmark
Christiania truly is amazing, and quite lovely actually; sort of like a separate, little 'world unto itself'. I believe however that the CPH city government still (/again) does give them a hard time of it occasionally; from what is generally thought to be the situation, the gov't - and/or 'developers', etc - have realised that it is - or, could be - a quite valuable bit of real estate which they would just love to be able to get their clutches into, for the "developing" of yet even more, over-priced, "luxurious residential usage" and that sort of thing. Just the same direction in which so much of the "globalised world" is also heading/has also gone; one supposes that it's a part of what might be considered to be "progress" ({: | ...?! [ omg: i really do sound (or, read) like such the total "left-wing hippie", no ({; D ...?! ] ~Very good video/vlog, **Gabe*!!*
Hi Gabriel. I criticized your way of portraying Christiania, because I don't think you do it justice. Unfortunately I cannot find my comment in the section, so I guess you've deleted it?
Well, it was one angry man you experienced.. don't let him define the place and the people there. Does not seem fair.
Hi there, the reason I deleted your comment was because I edited out the confrontation with the one guy. I decided it was taking away from enjoying the video that everyone was focused on that one incident, and I wanted the video to just be a tour of Christiania without the controversy. So I cut that part out and deleted the comments referring to it, since they wouldn't have made any sense otherwise. If you watch the video and skip to 4:55 then you will see that it skips over that part now.
Okay cool :) I'm sorry he was like that, but glad you don't let a stupid guy like that ruin it :)
I spent about fifteen days or so between 2011 and 2013 shooting video in Christiania. When I had a male assistant nobody approached us, so as a team we proably looked quite hard...lol. The only incident was with somebody who looked like a total psycho, probably on crystal-meth, who actually had pointed teeth. He was a dickhead visitor who objected to me getting a shot of the band playing at Nemoland from the high embankment, a bit questionable because it is still kind of Pusher St there, but the guy was showing off or smacked off his face. My Danish asisstant identified the threat better than I did and we got away fast. When I worked with a female assistant Dnaish guys were constantly talking to me, trying to get to talk to her. I heard the 'you shouldn't film people without permission'' line even when we were out in the wild parts of Christiania and one guy was a bit macho towards me, but not aggressive. The worst experience I had was just after the shooting in 2016, the Christianites were arriving at the Gra Hall for a meeting and I stood on a rock taking some snapshots of the people, some of whom I knew and many by sight. Some fat dickhead told me to stop taking pictures. The same cheap little Smasung Pixma tourist camera has been to Cuba and that never happened. I had been forming the impression before that some Christianites are actually pretty selfish people, not very generous with their time and very quick to shut you down when they want to get on with something. One guy I know there who has been living there since 1974 said that there is great beauty and great uglness in Christiania and that he still can't make sense of it, actually thinking about leaving at times.
I feel like I am living in my own private Christiania usa
Ive been there, you can’t find a place in there where I doesn’t smell like 🌱🍃
Was the hash any good? and was it set up like the coffee shops in Amsterdam?...thanks
I don't smoke actually, but I'm going to guess based on all the awesome graffiti that it's pretty good.
haha! Do you eat it then Gabriel? :)
Cool man...thanks for the reply ;-)
I'll just say my glory days of experimentation are over. I'd rather just have a beer. :)
Its not like Amsterdam tho. Its a small section where theres some makeshifts stalls setup where you buy it. Then its up to you to find a spot.
Hi from Sweden
nice colorful place attractive
Nice! 💖🌐
Cheers
Interesting, but looks chaotic and depressing. Like you'd expect.
What I don’t like about Christiania is the rain.
Looks like you made this movie in a bad weather intentionally:)
Is this where dj Kolsch is from?
You mean Rune RK? If so, no. But not far from there :-)
Had to search, I figured you had been in there... Regarding the no photos thing, I was just in Christiania about 2 hrs ago. I made my way to "pushers row" and a guy ahead of me had a pretty expensive camera rig taking shots of everything. He comes upon the pushers stalls and a few of the pushers yell at him. Then a group of people formed from what I thought were just visitors and customers and start surrounding him. Im guessing they were just extra people to supervise the operation. By their demeanor I could tell they werent going to harm him BUT they essentially chased/escorted him out of the area.
I'm going to Copenhagen this july, i was willing to score cannabis or maybe shrooms or acid in christiania, what u guys think?
1 -Dont take it around people you dont trust or around negative people..
2 -Dont take shrooms or lsd if you are in a negetive mindset ..
Do some research first, there are youtube channels like (psychedsubstance) that tell you what you need to know and then the youtube channel ''infinite waters'' can help you get the right mindset
yea actually i tried lsd before, i was indeed asking if u still can get some or shrooms there
you can always go around and ask people if they know anything, but generally, no, it sells only weed/hash.
Good place for cops to wait for anyone who leaves there. Definitely went to buy drugs 😂
i feel i could fit in there
If you can endure the smell of hash 24/7, and sleeping in a shed then yeah that place is for you
They're going to beat you up if you film inside of Pusher street
Christiania?
-...
- Cool!
😁😁
Who here from TikTok
