To help the hydrangeas to stand up more put tomato cages in the center. You would have to do this in early spring when they are coming up for the season. Also miracle grow will help your flowers to grow fuller.

If you do grass seed for shade in shady areas and water often it should work. Maybe you need a little fertilized soil mixed into it or added to the ground

Maybe you should look into grass seeds or grass that thrives in shade. I have "natrual wild strawberry ground cover," in my completely shaded backyard. I didn't plant it, it was here when I moved in. It is beautiful and always green, year round and I live in the northeast.
Also when you planting, do you "split" the base of the "new plants" before you set them in the soil. If not, that's why your plants and not thriving; they are "stuck" with growing inside the container they were in. Always "split" plants when you remove them from the pots purchased in.

We tried rubber mulch too and it’s a no for me. Regular mulch helps nourish the soil. Next season, try hostas in the circle as your perennial. They perform best in shade. Then you can add pretty annuals to give the circle some color. Best wishes.

If your mulch is coming out of the barrier, it’s not deep/low enough. The regular stuff is just going to go over the brick barrier as well. The ground, with mulch, needs to be 1-2” lower than the brick, to keep it in.

Depending on the type of tree it could be putting out a chemical (I forget the name of it) that some plants can’t tolerate. So it might be more than shade bothering those plants. So you might do some googling to find out. I know there are plants that can tolerate that chemical. Likely your gardenias are ( if that is what the problem is) the other problem could be is your soil type. Whether it’s more acidic or alkaline, or more clay etc. that dead Bush might’ve died because it wasn’t right for your soil type. Those wildflower mixes rarely work. It’s almost best to just start with some reliable “Wildflowers” like coneflower etc that thrive anywhere and find ones that work for your yard. :) everything looks so pretty!

I absolutely love your channel. Your project turned out Wonderful!!! I may give tiling a try. If you decide to try the round flowerbed again, I recommend building a raised flower bed with 2+ stones high, that way you can add soft soil and less labor to plant and maintain. I tried it in areas near trees and my yard has become a show piece. I added a wavy layout/pattern instead of a straight simple layout and it’s gorgeous. I have a total of 5 raised beds (1 long wavy garden along the longest length of my ranch style home, the 2nd longest bed is along the front entrance walkway/ left of garage, 3rd, a small D-shaped bed on the right side of garage. Then I have 2 medium/large round flower beds (one in the front and backyard). DOZENS of my neighbors stop to talk landscaping and design with me. I have drift roses in the walkway and flanking the garage, a long row of knockout roses in front of the house with lavender in front, between the roses while yellow Cala lilies have flanked the roses from the center back row, GORGEOUS!!!!! I have rose balls in the round beds with floral sage flanking the rose balls. I also have the floral sage in my mailbox flower bed and it is so uplifting. It’s a whole vibe❤️
