Arbatax is a district of Tortolì in the province of Ogliastra on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sardinia. The town has around 2270 inhabitants.
Geography
Arbatax is located on a peninsula on the east coast roughly halfway between Olbia and the island's capital Cagliari. It is one of the ferry ports through which the island can be reached from the mainland. Most of the porphyry hilltop on the peninsula is inaccessible to tourists due to several large vacation settlements and restricted military areas.
About 5 km inland is Tortolì, the former capital of the province of Ogliastra.
The history
According to state regulations, traditional economic activities in the region around Arbatax date back to the 15th century. The construction of the harbour was a project contested by economic interests, which was realized after a municipal resolution of 22 October 1852 to build the harbour.
Economy
In addition to regional trade, fishing, fish processing and port operations were the main sources of local income in earlier times. From the 1960s, industrialization began in the region with the construction of a paper factory and the establishment of a shipyard and steel construction company, until the development of tourism became somewhat more important.
Places of interest
The blood-red porphyry spires rising from the sea, the so-called red rocks (Italian: rocce rosse) of Arbatax, have been compared to the pinnacles of a cathedral. The red rocks of Arbatax are one of the great natural attractions of Sardinia. The rocks protruding from the sea shore are made of red porphyry and are embedded to the west and east in abundant gray granite porphyry. The red rocks are a landmark of Arbatax and are located, somewhat hidden, directly in front of the entrance to the harbor area on the right side of the road, entering the harbor from the sea on the port side.
