Even if the person says they are the police, and they are wearing what looks like a police uniform (people steal uniforms and can fake looking like a police officers) you should still call 911 before conversing with them, and ask the 911 operator if the person standing at your door (car or home) is a police officer. The 911 operator will be able to confirm or deny that the person standing outside your door is an officer and most generally be able to tell you why they are there. Always Safety First! Love your openess and honesty Lindy!!!
Lindy - How about moving over to an RV park like where Box Van Dee lives. Its cheap, they allow alternate type vehicles like yours and you would make new senior friends there like she has. Your dog would love having a yard too. You seem to have to spend all of your time battling the nutters all around you. You need to stop all of that and enjoy your life. You wouldn't be to far from your son either if you needed help. You are chasing your tail and you don't realize it.
If you get cameras around your van as I do, get cloud service or recording devices remote inside your van..why? One homeless man told me well I will just steal the camera(s) then. Cameras don't scare thieves away - just evidence for after the fact. My numerous motion lights in city I turn off motion section and use key flob remote to turn lights on when needed. Calling 911as you know isn't necessarily going to save your van or life as these individuals ... are quick, and so report for post investigation/insurance. You are a smart lady! And you delivered your video w passion that is very believable and very effective. People will listen. Great job. There are numerous other extremely inexpensive hacks you can use and install. While you are inside your van I would NOT recommend chain to your door handle and steering wheel. There are safer ways. Safe travels. Marley is soooo cute!!!
I live in an apartment, which I keep locked up pretty tight, especially at night. I have a number of devices for protection, including first, my Belgian Malinois. He's my alarm, and there have been a few times he's gone off, too. But thankfully, it was only a cat sniffing around my patio. But it did scare me, and I had my phone in one hand and a whistle in the other. And for drastic measures, I keep my gun very close by. I just pray something like that doesn't happen for any of us. But, as you said, in today's world, a plan is necessary. Love your tips and many others in the comments. 😃
Padlocking someone out also padlocks you in. If there were a fire or emergency where you needed to get out immediately or medical personnel needed to get to you, consider that you may be stuck inside, and that could cost you your life!
My brain says BACK IN to the parking spot, and you could literally start moving the van forward without dropping everything first. This would take THEM by surprise, and then take down the covers. I like surprising people...ha Glad you are taking more precautions and having a plan. Stay safe
I have an 'item' in my purse, for when I am out in unfamiliar areas after dark. It can easily fit in my pocket, when needed, and is not a 'weapon'...but sure can be used as one if I need it! I found it at a yard sale, years ago, and it was odd enough (unique enough) to catch my eye. Very unassuming. Then my brain was like...hmmm...no one would really question this being in the bottom of my purse, and it could be very handy in an emergency. I don't do airports/bus stations, so there'd be no one searching my purse...until there is an incident. Makes me feel better, anyway.
ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT BEING FOLLOWED OUT TO YOUR CAR, ESPECIALLY IF THE PARKING LOT IS DARK. YOU CAN ASK TO BE ACCOMPANIED TO YOUR VEHICLE, OR WAIT AND WALK OUT WITH OTHER PEOPLE. ALWAYS FOLLOW YOUR GUT INSTINCTS!
One of the things the local police have recommended for homes is to keep you car keys by your bed. Just like your son advised, if you hear something , hit the car alarm and the noise may scare whatever away. Many good suggestions.
Hi Lindy. Thank God for your wonderful son! I'm glad to hear about your added precautions. 18-wheeler drivers put chains through their door handles when they sleep. Good idea. You're a very smart, capable lady. I hope to meet you one day! Take care. Be safe. Love you.
I recently had to use my panic button on my minivan to discourage a drunk guy too close to my van. Please test yours before you need it because mine lite up the interior of the van & I was on display for all to see. Thanks Lindy
All great ideas! I place my car keys in the same place at my bedside every night. Can quickly hit the alarm if needed. Can you run the chain from the door to somewhere behind the seat? That way you won't have to unlock the padlock and can drive away quickly. ❤
💥 LINDY don't do the screw & chain thing...try this first..since you have that hole in the handle just put your seat belt thru the handle & click it in on the other side of the seat...this way your not putting a hole in the door....if this confused you let me know I can make a vid
You could also build a molt around your van with a draw bridge, and fill the molt with hungry alligators. And you could also put bars on your windows. You still could still get shot, but if they could not crawl in your window, it would be one less thing to worry about. You could also keep bags of poop in your van to make it smell so bad they would not want to enter. That is what one fellow did to keep thieves out of his garage. Hope this helps.
Lindy, they have small security cameras not too much that will record movement but not light up. You would need 4, one inside on corner of the windows including the front window and one in the back in a corner. They start recording with movement but no sounds. They are for day or night. No hooking up, they use batteries with stickers on the back. If they are inside, no one can get them. They cover a large space and are excellent.
There’s no perfectly safe place anywhere, whether in a sticks and bricks or on wheels. Just knowing you can take your home with you if you need to flee the neighborhood sounds comforting to me. Have you given thought to returning to your “old neighborhood” after awhile? You felt relatively safe there for 3 years.
Great video, use whatever you have to protect yourself. Made me stop and think about it even though I'm in a rural area in the country what would I do once my dog starts barking. Keep yourself safe everyone. Thanks Lindy
Pull your seat belt out real far and loop it throu the door handle and then fasten your seat belt as normal like you would wear it. That way no one can get in and if needed for emergency you just unlatch your seatbelt easy to get out
I have a suggestion. That passenger side door should be chained to the door behind it with the padlock back where you can release it back where you live.
Yr lucky u live in California. I’m in an apt, not a van but I’m in Portland, OR. Even if ur call 911 here they take a long time to answer and cops won’t show up for hours, even if an intruder has a weapon or u get stabbed. I can’t afford to move back to California right now. Pissed at myself that I ever moved to Oregon in the first place. I would much rather live in a large van in California than in an apartment in Portland, OR. I’m really glad the cops have your back there Lindy!
Hello Lindy. I think you mentioned in your last video that you keep a light on so you can see if you decide to get up for what ever during the night. There are tiny little motioned detection lights that are battery operated. They are really small, but put out so much light that you wouldn't believe it, so much that I put black electrical tape over two of the three LED lights . I put a couple in each of my bathrooms (which are just about the size of my Chevy van), and they are ideal. Also, I put a lock hasp on my back and side door, I don't use a pad lock, I use a carabiner, it's easy to remove quickly. One more thing I do, is I put my seat belts through my door handles, no drilling, or purchasing something that you may not need. By the way, I'm 80 years old, I carry two hand guns and one short shotgun. I figure if I have to shoot someone and get arrested, it'll just be an adventure. Lol. Stay safe no matter what. Mike
two ideas came to mind. make a recording of a police siren on your mobile phone, second thought, a lazar light device, to shine in their eyes. sounding the horn, flashing van lights good ideas. i live in a house, i have a habit of locking the doors, each and every time i come back into my home, after working outside. i bought a two sided bladed small scalpel, wooden handle, i found at a garage sale a few years ago, that i keep near my bed, and a fishing knife in the draw by my bed, and a cows horn, that's really loud when blown. i was the victim of a vicious attack whilst fishing in a remote location many years ago now, i'm alive, but the effects changed my sense of safety, and trust in others getting near me, that i use to have. it is also one of the reasons i don't use my real name.
Check out Nomadic Introvert. She had an extra lock installed on her doors, it was great. She had a scare where someone was yanking the door and tying to get in and it kept them out. She had them in each door.
I think setting off you alarm is the best first move. Then getting up and driving away. I don’t know if calling 911 will do any good unless the person(s) threatened you with a weapon or damaged your van.
You said World, I was thinking of Wally world so some of us understood it. lol Some good points here. I don’t think I’d put a chain Use parachute cord, you can cut itat least in case of emergency. I don’t think you’d want to be messing with a lock if you had to get out. Keep a knife upfront and a club. They’re trying to come in the window. A club will come in handy. You don’t know what kind of emergency you could have and not unlock that chain. I know how I’m protected. I better not say it because UA-cam doesn’t like that.
At home, I keep the door locked and only answer if I know/expect the person. Working on minivan build so not in use yet, but removed center console for safety so I don't have to exit van to sleep or to drive. Took R.A.D. self defense class for women $10; nationwide. I take public transit a few hours a day in a major city and security even says it isn't safe. Lots of drugs, mental illness, rule breakers etc. and very little enforcement.

Thank you SO much beautiful, Lindy. I know that I am sorely lacking in the security department. I'm going to learn from your experience and your suggestions. I need to be better about parking facing a way that I can easily get out. I definitely need to keep my keys nearby so I can hit the alarm. Gonna get some of that wasp spray. A taser. And I'm not totally opposed to a gun, but I think I'm more likely to shoot my toe than a criminal. 😅 I thank you for reminding us how important it is to think about this. ❤

Thank you for putting it out to all. I haven't been subbed long, but certainly love who you are, have gone back to watch a lot of your videos! 💕
Im sorry honey be careful out there lots of people on dope and homeless especially in California im from Modesto California enjoying your videos Keep on keeping on as my late dad would say lol
I feel a truckers stick steel flashlight that take several batteries led is safer than a hammer .You can use like a hammer and protect yourself if you have to. Someone breaks your window hook him out call 911 first so incident is being recorded
Please read the book, 'The Gift of Fear'. That book saved me three times on my last trip to Phoenix. It contains a lot of valuable information for keeping safe.
Lindy, have you checked into local housing through a couple groups Mercy Housing and Mutual Housing non-profit groups here in Sacramento? Also SHRA (Sacramento housing and redevelopment agency) check Davis/yolo county housing and sit in on a city council meeting!! They will help also heard good things about city of Santa Rosa through the governor!! I know everything is about getting on waitlist list but even my name came up once or twice🎉🎉🎉🎉
Even if the person says they are the police, and they are wearing what looks like a police uniform (people steal uniforms and can fake looking like a police officers) you should still call 911 before conversing with them, and ask the 911 operator if the person standing at your door (car or home) is a police officer. When my kids were younger, I used to drill them on safety. One thing I told them was scream FIRE because that word gets everyone's attention
Lindy you don’t have to get a chain and lock for your door. Just take your seatbelt down through the handle of your door and then hook them as usual
I came here to say this. Truckers do this
Don't baracade yourself so that you can't get out in an emergent situation.

Good advice from Jason, don't open the door and call 911.
You have to run it behind the seat so you can get in drivers seat to leave

I lived in my car for 3 yrs on BLM Land and several times I almost was abducted out there.
Now that's scary.
Use a carabiner instead of a lock. That secured the chain but can unlock fast.

How about a big dog barking system. No one wants to mess with a ferocious dog barking alarm
I have a dog.
