I just ordered the mk iii version of this lens which solved all the problems of the previous one: 1. It’s a lot lighter 330g vs 470g 2. smaller: 50mm vs 62mm 3. optically even sharper in all apertures -> perfect all around lens
Great review! I love this lens, even with it being a little on large side. I did a little write up about it for 35mmc after having it for a few months and it's still my go-to 35mm for my M mount bodies and my Sony bodies.
I like the modern look of the Voigtlander and the Zeiss glass but the issue of focus shift needs to be addressed in your videos. Thanks for your good work, Matt.
Thanks, I've never experienced focus shift issues with my Voigtlanders but I did with the Zeiss Sonnar 50mm f1.5. That is the reason why I sold it and kept the Summilux ASPH. It is a known issue with the Sonnar but I still miss the lens at times! :)
Love this lens! I don't really shoot weddings, but I shot one for a close friend one time and found that a nicely corrected 35mm with close focusing abilities was really all I needed. I think it might be the most versatile lens I own for my M240.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I see your into the CL line now. Interesting ! My 240 developed an issue with a sicky cam on the 1st day, I hope it can be exchanged or money back (purchased with warranty)... I also have the Q in Germany for repair. I don't like thes size of the SL's so maybe a CL is worth a try.
I’m looking hard at the ii and iii, for my 35mm hole in my kit. I’m leaning towards the ii. I shoot with Leica adapter on my original SL camera. I like that it is a little bigger, heavier, easier to focus, and read nomenclature. I really don’t see any image quality gains in anything but tests, real photographs no difference.
I have the CV 35/1.2 II lens, and the 0.5 meter MFD is tricky when using the lens on a M camera - happened to me a few times that I went all the way to 0.5 m but forgot that the rangefinder only focuses down to 0.7 m leading to out-of focus shots. Of course this problem does not exist when attached to a non-rangefinder based mirrorless camera. It's not a landscape lens - even at f/11 it is not as straight with the borders of the frame as my Leica 35/2 vers. IV lens.
Martin's Analog Photo Channel thanks Martin, yes I should ha e mentioned that actually, the negative of a lens not stopping at 0.7m is you can mis-focus with an RF camera. I’ve done it too in the past. That’s why for film I normally select the 35/1.4 instead. Interesting about the distortion so thanks for that.
Voigtlander have some wonderfully priced lenses, and am often tempted by this 35/1.2. If ever I can get to photo in the pits at Le Mans, in the night, this would be the lens in my bag!
Matt Osborne ..thanks, Matt. Unlikely to get that chance now, but really must get a copy of Lara Platman’s book Through The Night, on this very subject .
Heya Matt ... so maybe if size and weight matters ... Matt(ers) lol 😆 why is the newest Version 3 not an option for you? They say: "The length of the new lens was reduced by 20% and the weight was reduced by 30% compared to the previous II version." I just ordered mine 😋👍🏻
Thanks Bruno, good point! :) If the v3 was out when I got mine I would have bought it of course. I now have so many lenses I don't need any more.. and I shoot mostly 50mm so they get priority :) ..Congrats on your those!
Dhanula Kannangara thanks! Sorry I’ve not tried Sigma. The size is much bigger for some lenses vs Voigtlander. I think Voigtlander are thought to be better made etc.
Hello, firstly I don't have the Zeiss f2 but for low light and bokeh the CV should be better and for sharpness maybe the Zeiss (or get the CV 35mm f1.7 Ultron - see that video). Amazing for sharpness and in low light.
Hi Matt....I've been reviewing many of your videos on Voigtlander 35mm lenses. You rate the Ultron 35/1.7 has best for sunstars, and both the Nokton 35/1.2 ASPH and the APO 35/2 as both just about perfect for digital cameras. I wonder though, do you know, between the Nokton and APO, which produces the best sunstars??
Hi Al, the Nokton is much better than the APO for sunstars. Most lenses are. Why? Because the APO is a special design to give round bokeh balls at f2, f2.8, f5.6, f16 (rather than sunstars from the blades).
Hi will you be testing out the Voigtlander 35mm 1.2 ASPH III so please let me know, or will you test it again the Voigtlander 35mm F1.2 II Vs III let me know. the Voigtlander II is very heavy Thank you
Thanks yes good point but the problem is some lenses are over adversed so the actual aperture is often slower. in practice I don't see a huge difference with the 1.2 I have.

Thanks agreed! My most used lens on my CL but great for shallow DOF on the M240.. especially with EVF! (See that video) :)
This is my No1 lens for my SL2-S however will need a 35mm AF soon so considering the Sigma F2 DG DN which look fabulous for the price Thanks Matt
Thanks Terry! I love this lens too!
Just got mine for my m240 and I finally have a use for the live view on the camera focusing on 0.5
Thanks Jeroen, I hope you enjoyed the magic at 0.5m! :)
This lens is arriving tomorrow in my mail box, from Leica Boutique Camtec Montreal Canada. Can't wait to try it on my M8! Thanks for sharing Matt
Bernard Brunet Thanks Bernard. Congrats! It is great at f1.2 on the M8 sharp CCD filter. I’m sure you will love it! Enjoy! :)
I bought this lens from Camtec a few years ago for my M8, now I use it on my M9, enjoy it Bernard.

I have the same and super happy with it. I will likely soon get a Z6 too where it should shine on also.
Nico Cazals Thanks Nikon! It’s big but worth the weight I think! :)
Matt Osborne for the price you pay used, it’s definitely worth it.

Hello Matt, please let me know which lens is better in Image quality CV 35/1.2 II lens Vs Zeiss 35mm f2 ZM ?
Hello, firstly I don't have the Zeiss f2 but for low light and bokeh the CV should be better and for sharpness maybe the Zeiss (or get the CV 35mm f1.7 Ultron - see that video). Amazing for sharpness and in low light.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks Matt for reply, Great review!!!!
@@MS-xk3ds thank you 🙏🏻
I do not own this lens, but I have shot with one, and I really like it, but holy heck is it heavy.
John Roberts haha well summarised John! Yes if you are used to your nice and light CV 40/1.4 it is heavy! :)
So would shooting this on my m6 be like? Would the rangefinder look like something is in focus when it’s not?
I've used it on my M6, works great. Just remember any lens that goes closer than 0.7m wont focus on a Leica at less than 0.7m.

Manuel Camacho hi not yet. If I get the opportunity I will test/ review it 👍🏻
Hé Matt, can the Nokton 35 1.2 be used at 50cm with a EVF on a Leica m 240 ? Or am I missing something?
Yes! That's why I bought it.. great lens! (see the other video for the other versions, this model (v2) is bigger and heavier vs. v3
Hi will you be testing out the Voigtlander 35mm 1.2 ASPH III so please let me know, or will you test it again the Voigtlander 35mm F1.2 II Vs III let me know. the Voigtlander II is very heavy Thank you
How about if I test both and some side by side samples? :) wink wink .. it's coming
Price is quite high i prefer 50/1.2 and 35/1.5 mix
Yes I bought mine before the other lenses were designed. Still a great performer.
But remember the difference between f/1.2 and f/1.4 is 1/3. Which is still substantial whereas one would think it is minimal.
Thanks yes good point but the problem is some lenses are over adversed so the actual aperture is often slower. in practice I don't see a huge difference with the 1.2 I have.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom i still prefer the compact M-35mm f/1.4.
@@ThirdEye105 Yes i'm not saying the CV is better. I like small lenses :)
what about the ring flare of this lens? i want to see the ring flare 35mm f1.2
No ring flare 1.2! I have ring flare 1.4 lens.. see that video :)
Where is the link for this ring flare video?
It's too big for my M film cameras, and I'm not interested in a digital M.
Yes it’s a big lens for sure. The 1.4 and f2 are small
Just for clarification, is this a native full frame lens? Or would I have to put a full frame camera into crop mode?
Thank you for the help
