Just received new rear/red units from Underground last week and are easily 2x brighter. Seem to be built much stronger too. Still bullish on this addition vs. halogens.

I upgraded both the headlights and taillights for my 2020 F-150 XLT to LED systems. My headlights are from AlphaRex (NOVA-Series LED Projector Headlights Alpha-Black) and my taillights are Morimoto (Ford f-150 (15-20): Morimoto XB LED Tail Lights) which includes the feature to keep BLIS)….it was well worth the $!
I have a '23 Lariat. I found that my license plate light is incandescent. So, I'll order that lights you found. BUT, are my bulbs in my tail and headlight fixtures all LED? THANKS, H
I’m not very handy, I have a 2024 f150 xlt hybrid. Went in yesterday to change the license plate lights to led. Ended up breaking the light when trying to pull it out of the socket, having a small spark and the license plates lights don’t work. Is there a fuse that may have blown? Any ideas of how I could easily troubleshoot? Thanks, have been enjoying your videos. Learning a good bit.
Yes, sounds like you popped a fuse. I would log into the f150gen14.com forum and pose your question, there are literally dudes hanging out there looking to answer questions just like this. Someone undoubtedly could narrow down which fuse to check.
Great video, one coment if I might, I did install these "underground lighting" LED bulbs, mine did not last 1 year, the individual LEDS started melting out of the board on those RED bulbs. Warranty was just for another set. I changed the whole light assembly for a morimoto kit. Also, the front Amber leds are working good for over 2 years at this point. Just in case this happens to you 👍🏻
Have you noticed any failures with the LEDs? I bought both the rear and fronts turn signals, and all the rear turn signals ended up failing after 4 months. It appeared they were overheating
Robert, I had one rear bulb fail out of four. If I see more of them fail, I will likely move to non-resistor bulbs and handle the hyperflash problem through FORSCAN. Using these bulbs is the only (current) way around hyperflash unless you want to dig into FORSCAN programming. cheers
Great video.. I used Lasfit brake/flash bulbs but they last only 3/4 months each. Now they are stop sending replacement and refunding the money and looking into issues with bulbs. I also have rear red Lasfit bulbs which are non brake and flash. They are still working fine. So what's the lifespan of underground led bulbs that goes on bottom of light assembly (xlt) and brake/flash. Anyone here with more than a year or more than 20k miles use??
My passenger side vertical run of halo led lighting surrounding the passenger headlight DIED. Per Ford, it's not covered under premium care warranty. Considered a light even though it's not replaceable as is a normal bulb. Cost.....$ 2000.00 My service writer requested assistance for me. A generous offer of $ 777.77. Bloody crazy ! My 4th F150, possibly my last. I feel badly considering my son, several months ago, asked my advice about an F150 he was looking to purchase. I gave him the thumbs up. Now he's held hostage to this ticking, led light, wallet grabbing, time bomb.
I didn't see your video until after I already purchased a set from another brand. Mine that I just installed flash correctly on the outside, however the instrument panel flashes like it's doing hyper flash, but it's doing regular speed outside the vehicle. Beers from this company exhibit this same characteristics?
Not sure about the beers from this company, but my "tick-tock" sound inside the vehicle as well as interior flashers go at the same rate as before due to the design. You're seeing the hyperflash problem. You might be able to program that out with ForScan but I have never messed with it.
I don't know about this because my XLT headlights are bone stock LED reflectors and I won't replace them. There is a height adjustment that they make at the factory, I just don't know where it's located. You might have to get a service manual to find this if you can't find by searching around. cheers
Hey great video, ended up getting these LEDs for my 22 XLT. They worked great at first. After 7 months, all of a sudden yesterday I got hyper flash and only one of the rear reds was fully functional, the other 3 were very dim. Computer issue? Thoughts?
Did you save the OEM bulbs? I would pop those back in and see if the problem follows the bulbs or the truck. If the new LEDs failed, contact Underground. If the problem stays with the OEM bulbs as well, you might see if there is a code that you can clear to reset the braking circuit.
@@fixorrepairdiy4609 I had thought they might not be replaced because their website just says a 30 day warranty. I reached out and after sending back my defective ones, I had replacements in less than a week. I like them, so hopefully they last a while! Thanks
I just picked up a 21 XLT. Your video is the 1st I have seen too where no hyper flash is happening and you don’t have to cut the side of the new bulb plastic off in order for new bulbs to fit in plug. Thank you so much.
Rich, the front amber turn signals are really striking...super bright. Can light up road signs 500' ahead of me. When I'm on the brakes at a stoplight, I can hear all four rear fans on the LEDs hum. Kinda cool. You can avoid the hyperflashing via Forscan programming and cheap LEDs but I did not want to mess with that. These are plug & play.
Jeff, there was a similar question earlier in the comments...the vendor responded that it causes the taillights to come through as "pink" instead of a properly deep red color. Good question though, I had wondered the same thing.
2023 f150xlt I replaced mine yesterday and unfortunately I am getting the random hyper flash. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. It happens when I first turn the blinker on for about three to five seconds and then stops. Almost like it doesn’t recognize the light right away.
Check to see if the fast blinking is also outside on the lighting itself. If not, then I would go with less-expensive LED bulbs and learn how to turn off your hyperflash with FORScan. I recently did this and it was not difficult if you have the right pieces. cheers
Kia's have Halo taillights. Police vehicles etc. I remember a time when people didn't want their vehicle to look like everyone else's. That's why I'm not going with the halo taillights. Almost every vehicle on the road has em and I don't like falling in line and following everyone else. Just my take. Beautiful truck my man 👍 love that blue
Quick question: I've read (online) that LEDs that have diodes on multiple sides tend to overheat; have you found that to be true since installing these?
Hi Steven...if you can believe it, these units have very small fans at the end which fire up when you light up the bulb. I think that this is primarily to cool the ballast resistor. It's a little bit wild since now I can hear the fans whirring if I listen carefully at a stoplight. Does not bother me a bit. So far no problems with heat and there is lots of space around the bulb to dissipate heat if these were throwing off a lot. cheers
I did a separate video for LED license plate lights. It's pretty important that you get the OEM bulbs out of there otherwise you will burn up the socket. There is no need to replace the bed 3rd brake light since it's LED as is. cheers
I got all the bulbs that you suggested and I'm really happy with the results. I really thank you for the suggestions. In your video, you didn't mention the little marker bulbs at the front. I looked on the Underground Lighting site, and I couldn't find any reference for them. Do you happen to have a reference for those? Also, I was able to replace the tag bulbs without having to pull out the whole lamp. Again, thank you very much for sharing that information.
@@flcusat Hi Pedro, the marker lights can be changed out to any LED if you want to go that route; the big issue with the brake lights and the turn signal lights is the sensing circuit in the truck which will look for a decrease in current from what it expects; this is what causes hyperflashing. If you just replace your brake or turn signal bulbs with any standard LED, the truck will hyperflash the turn signals (or give you a brake light warning) because it thinks there is a dead bulb. The truck won't do this with marker lights, so you can use any compatible LED bulb for those. Myself, I have not bothered to change the marker lights, however I do think it's important to change your rear license plate lights with LED as you have done. cheers
Great video. Would like to make up grade but spending almost $400 on light bulbs is a bit too expensive when I’ve got my eye on a Yakima Outpost HD rack that’s about $1600 built the way I would like. Keep up the great content.

Great Video, I appreciate the research you put into this video. It helps me since I just purchased and new F150 STX with all halogen bulbs and I am upgrading those. Has the underground LEDs been reliable for you?
I had to replace one rear bulb, but it was sent to me immediately and it took 5 minutes to replace. I keep the old halogens in my storage bag under the seat just in case.
Thanks for this. I've learned the hard way about load resistors on another vehicle. I was glad to find a video recommending LEDs that do not require them.
Why didn't I? To begin with, my laptops are mac so I have to then install a windows virtual machine for $100...(don't want to hear anything about BootCamp!)...and after all that, spend dozens of hours that I don't have to learn how to NOT screw up my truck with ForScan. Or I could just take the easy way out and install the lights. Better yet, why don't you live next door to me so you can help!? lol
Hi Nicholas I have not dug into FORScan yet. All of my laptops are macs and I'm not excited about going down the road of adding a virtual windows partition again just to run FORScan. There must be an easier way.
The 2022 version lasted a year. The 2023+ replacements have been great. I think part of my problem was a weak battery causing the charging system to run up to 15V which put a strain on these lights.
Great video, does your transmission drive you crazy? My 21 xlt constantly skips 2nd gear when shifting. My dealership has reset the adaptive learning but the problem persists.
Hi sir, I saw you video and diy my 2023 powerboost xlt light. But it is hyper flashing only in screen, but normal out side. As an expert do you know why? 😂 really appreciate !
Did you use these lights from undergroundlighting, or did you use generic LED lights from Amazon? The Underground lights should draw about the same current as the incandescent and should "fool" the Ford sensors that it is not an open bulb. Otherwise you might need to program it in Forscan to get the error message to go away with LED lights.
I initially loved the Underground Lighting mod. But, the one-year failure rate has been atrocious. I am either going to Sylvania LED or back to Halogen. I only have 11, 000 miles on this truck and I can't be constantly replacing expensive LED bulbs!
Going to look at some LasFit bulbs shortly. The other thing that you can do is to use generic LEDs and remove the "outage" sensing through FORScan edits. I did this mod last month with a cheap Auxito bulb and it works fine, although the light pattern not as good as the newer Underground set. Vid in a week or two.
That's a bummer Uncle Wayno! I would probably try eBay to see if there is a used take-off that I could find, maybe someone is replacing with Lariat taillights and wants to sell their OEM XLT tail lights. I am not sure if you can remove/replace your BLIS system or the whole thing is integrated; I suspect the latter. If eBay is no bueno, then start searching online ford parts sites once you figure out your part number.
Loved the vid and recommendation. You said this upgrade would cover 2023 model years, but the manufacturer link in the description doesn’t have 2023 in the year drop down when selecting your vehicle. Did the manufacturer confirm these were good for 2023s?
Hi Kyle, I'm not aware of any changes to the tail lamps on the F-150 XLT (or any other model using halogens) into the 2023 MY. The 21/22/23 MY's are essentially the same with only minor differences. Why not remove your lens assembly and see if you have the same bulbs that I showed in mine? That will confirm it for you more accurately than a supplier who is only going off of indirect information anyway. cheers.
@@fixorrepairdiy4609 thanks again for the great suggestion and video. Had a wait 8-10 weeks because of items being on back order, but they finally came in today and I already installed them! Your video was super helpful and made for an easy install. Thanks again!
I purchased the same LEDs as you but I am getting hyper flashing. The store customer service is stating that if you’re on the breaks for a long period of time the resistors will turn off due to the heat and thus start hyperflashing. Have you experienced anything like this? 2022 XLT
No I have not had anything like that occur. I have been on the brakes for several minutes at a time without an issue. There are cooling fans on each lamp that should prevent this from happening if you used the same vendor. If you can't resolve that issue, then it looks like your next course of action would be to move to a straight LED version of the bulb (without resistor) and disable the hyperflashing through FORSCAN programming.
You should have used white led bulbs for the rear. Red bulbs with red lenses doesn't make sense. You did notice that the halogen bulb you removed was clear.
@@robertheimbueger271 When I first installed them I was surprised that you actually can hear a very slight fan noise when the vehicle is stopped, especially since I have 4x of them lighting up during braking.
@@fixorrepairdiy4609 on top of that.. this video was a complete course for anyone wanting to replace halogen with led.. some of these I learned the hard way.. so thank you
I was going to do this, but when I found out most of them were around $60 per bulb it ruined it for me. All of this s**t is made overseas for several pennies each, and these middlemen expect me to fork over $360? Of course that beats buying OEM parts, but are these retrofits going to last ten years like they should? Because the LED chips will last much longer than that, but the cheap ballast components and chips will fail way before the leds do.
you can find ther led tails for a little cheaper than that. unless shit has gone through the roof since i did this. I upgraded my headlights and tailights to led. the tails were about 1000 shipped for the pair. the harness was about 170 or so off ebay. this was also in like february of this year before shit really hit the ceiling. @@Astrand1 i think that’s what i’ll do Alex. Not worth losing 100Gb of my mac pro for a win partition. I looked on eBay rhis morning and lots of refurbs for $100 or so.
I have ordered a 2023 XLT 302a. I believe the front lights will be LED. I also ordered the FX4 package and the taillights are LED with this package.
Yeah William I'm finding out that the FX4 package gives you some nice upgrades. My headlights are LED and excellent, but all turn signals were halogen. Would be great if yours were LED stock. Best of luck with your order and delivery sir.
THANKS, H
Harry, I think you're all LED with headlights and taillights. Definitely get those halogens out of the license plate sockets! cheers

Thanks for all your hard work and dedication! Outstanding information and presentation!
make a video about
lights for either the grill or marker lights for the roof
amber color would be awesome
Hey Duke what about this one: ua-cam.com/video/eJlknCvhAXE/v-deo.htmlsi=QM3z10TDR1xgKj42
Great info .. I just bought a 2022 F150 XLT and that’s going to be my first mod to upgrade led turn signals
Nice...I think it makes a big difference.
Just in case this happens to you 👍🏻
My 2021 f150 xlt fx4 package has all led's on it even the license plate lights are led....it's part of the package. Not sure why yours doesn't.
Thanks James…was unaware that package had updated lighting…thanks
Have you noticed any failures with the LEDs? I bought both the rear and fronts turn signals, and all the rear turn signals ended up failing after 4 months. It appeared they were overheating
Robert, I had one rear bulb fail out of four. If I see more of them fail, I will likely move to non-resistor bulbs and handle the hyperflash problem through FORSCAN. Using these bulbs is the only (current) way around hyperflash unless you want to dig into FORSCAN programming. cheers
Great video! This motivated me to go ahead with the upgrade on my XLT! Thanks!
The newer ones that I got in 2023 from Underground are still in use. They are much more robust than the 2022 version.
Sorry to hear that. Would be easier if it was smashed and covered under insurance. If you want to de-LED your lights get an XL model, all halogens.
Good call on these! Just purchased them for my 23!
Amazing video!! Ordering bulbs right now and subscribing
You can get Lariat taillights for around $800 and the harness for $150, thats what I did.
You can eliminate this with Forscan in the BCM. Turn off your bulb monitoring.
Great video!! Could you comment on adjusting or leveling the headlights? I have a 2021 F150 xlt with factory quad lights.. Thanks!!!
@@fixorrepairdiy4609 I saved them. Will do, thanks.
@@fixorrepairdiy4609 amazing you reply so fast to an older video comment. Thanks again.
Thought I should update…determined that the OEMs worked fine. Underground was contacted and promptly agreed to replace the LEDs. Good service!
My question is, then, why doesn't a Golf have an amber turn signal in their US cars? Wouldn't it be cheaper to have one?
Mine went out after 4 months. Any suggestions? Well, the parking lights still work but not the brake or turn signals?
If you bought them from underground then just reach out to them and get a replacement
@@fixorrepairdiy4609 I had thought they might not be replaced because their website just says a 30 day warranty. I reached out and after sending back my defective ones, I had replacements in less than a week. I like them, so hopefully they last a while! Thanks
Great video, how have they held up? No hyper flashing on the dash?
All good
I just picked up a 21 XLT. Your video is the 1st I have seen too where no hyper flash is happening and you don’t have to cut the side of the new bulb plastic off in order for new bulbs to fit in plug. Thank you so much.
Thanks for doing this. I too have a 22 XLT 302A PowerBoost. Been wanting to replace all halogen bulbs with LEDs and not having to add resistors.
@@fixorrepairdiy4609 same. I don’t buy cheap LEDs for the same reason.
Did I miss it or why wouldnt you use white LED's in the rear since the lens itself is red? Thanks for the research
Jeff, there was a similar question earlier in the comments...the vendor responded that it causes the taillights to come through as "pink" instead of a properly deep red color. Good question though, I had wondered the same thing.
Great vid.
I've had my STX for over a year and only recently realized how dim my taillights are.
I must rectify the situation with LED bulbs.
What Led bulb brand did you go with. I also have a 23 stx thinking about making the switch???
2023 f150xlt I replaced mine yesterday and unfortunately I am getting the random hyper flash. Is anyone else experiencing this issue. It happens when I first turn the blinker on for about three to five seconds and then stops. Almost like it doesn’t recognize the light right away.
Check to see if the fast blinking is also outside on the lighting itself. If not, then I would go with less-expensive LED bulbs and learn how to turn off your hyperflash with FORScan. I recently did this and it was not difficult if you have the right pieces. cheers
Thank you. That is definitely a consideration.
So far no problems with heat and there is lots of space around the bulb to dissipate heat if these were throwing off a lot. cheers
Can we use the same amber lights for the front turn signals of an STX if we have all halogen?
Check the bulb type. If it’s the same bulb as in my video, then you can use the amber bulbs listed in description.
What was your selection for tag lights bulbs and top mounted 3rd brake light? Thanks in advance
I did a separate video for LED license plate lights. It's pretty important that you get the OEM bulbs out of there otherwise you will burn up the socket. There is no need to replace the bed 3rd brake light since it's LED as is. cheers
Thanks for the fast reply@@fixorrepairdiy4609
Myself, I have not bothered to change the marker lights, however I do think it's important to change your rear license plate lights with LED as you have done. cheers
Awesome video Bro. Definitely gained a subscriber!
Great video. Would like to make up grade but spending almost $400 on light bulbs is a bit too expensive when I’ve got my eye on a Yakima Outpost HD rack that’s about $1600 built the way I would like. Keep up the great content.
Thanks Kirk!
Thank you so much for the video. This is the video that we didn’t ask for but really needed it. Loved your delivery and research! Keep up the great work! You got a new subscriber now 😊
Thanks amigo!
Fantastic video
Thanks for this. I've learned the hard way about load resistors on another vehicle. I was glad to find a video recommending LEDs that do not require them.
Let me ask, I ordered a 1997-2020 F-150, but my car is a 2023 F-150, so can it be used? thank u sir
depends on the trim level! You should be able to determine if your bulbs are incandescent or LED from the factory.
Very good video, but why didn't you just put the cheap LED 's and fixed the hyper flashing with forscan
Better yet, why don't you live next door to me so you can help!? lol
I've heard that FORScan will remove the hyperflash when installing LED's. Did you see much on this tool?
Hi Nicholas I have not dug into FORScan yet. All of my laptops are macs and I'm not excited about going down the road of adding a virtual windows partition again just to run FORScan. There must be an easier way.
Hit us with the home Depot song
Hi.. How are these bulbs doing after one year??
The earlier models from 2022 lasted about a year. The replacements appear to be much more robust.
Have the led turn signals held up one year later?
The 2022 version lasted a year. The 2023+ replacements have been great. I think part of my problem was a weak battery causing the charging system to run up to 15V which put a strain on these lights.
Your videos are so well explained and well organized. 🙌🏻
Thanks JC!
Great video, does your transmission drive you crazy? My 21 xlt constantly skips 2nd gear when shifting. My dealership has reset the adaptive learning but the problem persists.
It does not bother me. See my other video on "Top Ten Things." It's there but I've adapted to it and it's just inherent to the PowerBoost.
Your transmission is working as designed, it is programmed that way. Get used to it.
Got it, I buy these led on Amazon, thank you sir!
I was looking at the specs for these lights on the underground website, it says these there is a “… a built in silent Fan to cool.”-really!?
Yep. Little micro-fan.
@@fixorrepairdiy4609 Yeah the Underground set is awesome as far as brightness and pattern, they are just very pricey and not very reliable.
How much were the LED's, total cost please?
I think at $60/pair I needed two pairs in the rear and one set in the front for a total of about $180.
I cracked the actual tail light. What/where do you recommend to purchase whole new assembly? Thanks.(2022 XLT SPORT 302A w/Towing package)
Thank you!
That will confirm it for you more accurately than a supplier who is only going off of indirect information anyway. cheers.
@@fixorrepairdiy4609 thanks for the quick reply. I’ll give it a shot. Much appreciated.

Wow! What a great video!
Have you noticed any issues with the bulbs overheating?
Never mind I did more research and the website stated that the lights have built on fans for heat dissipation
@@robertheimbueger271 When I first installed them I was surprised that you actually can hear a very slight fan noise when the vehicle is stopped, especially since I have 4x of them lighting up during braking.
Ok I’m not the only one hearing a high pitch frequency sound when braking. I’m assuming that’s expected?
@@kylefield6553 those are the little fans doing their job.

Great thorough video, I have subscribed.
Thanks Chris. If you want to go the cheaper route, then use inexpensive LEDs and program forscan so that they don't hyperflash.

Why not just use the reverse light area as your amber turns 🤷♂️
The reverse light on the XLT is an integrated LED module and not a simple bulb replacement.
@@fixorrepairdiy4609 I forgot about that. I have zone lighting and knew it was led. Guess we can toss dual color and custom harness out the window
Alternatively, you can modify the computer with forscan so that it expects a led rather than halogen.
Thanks, I did cover this in a recent video on the topic.
If I change forscan then I can still those underground lightening red led bulbs with built in resistors or I have to buy just regular led 3157 bulbs??
Thank You for this video. 👍👍
you can find ther led tails for a little cheaper than that. unless shit has gone through the roof since i did this. I upgraded my headlights and tailights to led. the tails were about 1000 shipped for the pair. the harness was about 170 or so off ebay. this was also in like february of this year before shit really hit the ceiling. I also got quad refectors headlights off a raptor for abour 1450. and about another 420 for the harness. plus all the forscan required to make it all work. guess prices have really gone up
