i never in all my days thought that i would be a spectator in a snail race.
😂
You and me both. I'm just about to buy copper mesh hence visiting here. Good to know it will keep the buggers at bay. Great video. Watched a different one, but a guy placed a snail inside a square of tape. Someone pointed out to him that it's about a choice with snails. So when it didn't have a choice to escape outwards, it braved the copper. It's when they can avoid and have better places to venture they will avoid. 😅 who would have thought we'll be doing snail science! 🐌
Ikr 😂 I was focused 😅
Duct tape is amazing for wooden planters use a base layer of duct tape then your copper tape over the top and you'll will have no more problems with the copper tape coming loose
What function does the duct tape serve?
@joewoodchuck3824 put the duct tape on first, then put the copper tape over the duct tape, and it won't peel off. Copper tape isn't sticky enough for wooden planters
I put a 1" wide copper strip in my garden next to the cabbage. I watched as slug after slug passed over it without even hesitating.
If you have terracotta pots with a lip at the top, then put a band of Vaseline (1 inch wide ) around the lip and the slugs will not cross it. Take care when moving the pots during the season, as if one forgets the Vaseline is under the lip one can drop the pots. Expensive!
Won't Vaseline melt in the sun?
You can get copper nails to nail the copper tape to your wood.
You can take a garden hose and cut so much you need to get around the raised beds, then cut along the hose and put it on the edge of the raised bed. Make sure the upper part of the tape is covered by the hose, that will hold the tape and make it water proof. Hugs from Sweden
That is a great tip! Thank you!
Thanks, here I am trying to figure out how to achieve this...and then you! I was thinking of buying electrical wire and stripping it.
I was researching effective ways to repel snails and stumbled upon the copper and beer trap method. Thank you for sharing this informative video!
I had no idea you had a gardening channel. Answering all the hard questions I have too 😃
1:11 The snail checks out its reflection, and then turns to the slug as asks: "Does this shell make me look fat?" 1:56 The slug sees itself in reflected in the copper tape and thinks, "OMG. Is THAT what I look like? Ewwww," and it turns away. I don't blame it. Okay, something else that works if you want to trap snails and slugs (maybe to use for fishing bait later?) is to bury a small tin can in the soil so that the lip of the can is level with the dirt, and then pour some beer into the can. Snails and slugs will be attracted to the odor of the beer and will fall into the can and drown. Either way, good idea to keep them from munching on your veggies.
😂
love the little food box for the battery... didn't think of that...
Definitely going to use this on my raised bed, thanks👍
I always wondered if a cupper tape would work. I couldn’t decide to buy one. So thank you so much for making this video! It was very helpful 🙏🏽 And also the electric fence was such a cool idea
Super Experiment! Thanks 😉
I removed the bottom of some plastic flower pots and glues a stripe of copper tape around them.
After I planted the young plants in the ground I made a little fence around them with a pot.
Worked very well.
You just have to remove the leaves that are hanging to the ground.
In this way I can use them again next year.
I think it would help if you slide over the copper with the peace of sandpaper once in a while.
Greetings from germany 🙂
Used to use this on pressure treated wood on the underside of the top rail I mounted. This allowed my mom to sit on the side of the beds comfortably and it also let the tape be hidden and gravity would prevent anything from "arching over" it. It sticks well to dried pressure treated wood.
Thank you ....useful video.
I thought the first experiment with copper wire was cool and worked! But, I see what you mean needing thicker stuff. Will work better I’m sure! Also those were some good looking plants!
Yeah! Love your videos young lady!
Good Lord that snail is huge!!! I Only have teeny tiny ones. Great video :-)
You could hire a tin smith or roofer and have him install thin copper sheet metal strips, they are thicker and last a long time, it will be costly but it's probably a one time investment. 0.5 mm copper sheet metal costs around 200€ per square meter, for a 10 m long 30 mm wide strip would cost around 60€ which will probably suffice for one raised bed.
You can use the copper tape for the electric fence, it also conducts
Perhaps folding/turning out the bottom edge of the tape (stapled along the top) would present a working barrier to the snails, slugs, usw. Or.. stapling the 3cm tape along the top edge with edge sticking horizontally outward would hold back the critters.
Thank you
With a copper tape you can use silicon gun to permanently stick it. Just wear some disposable gloved and press the tape under a small thin line of the silicon thats durable and the type that sticks to wood or all surfaces! :)
Holy Crap Lilly I didn't know that you also had a gardening channel! Cool!
Good video and thanks for the tip not to use copper tape on wood so copper wire should work better.
Use copper mesh - you can staple or nail it on to wood. It’s wider and kind of creates a ‘skirt’. I use a band of copper tape and a ring of copper mesh around the top of my terracotta pots which have hostas in. I also use a little plug of mesh in the holes in the bottom of all my pots to stop them camping out in the crock.
I Have the 2” copper tape and I added it to my garden bed on a dry day. So far they are nice on and I have had a couple rainy days
This vid has confirmed an idea I've had but I wanted to know how long each 9v battery lasts for. Thanks this vid was simple and very informative. 👍🏿
What you do, is you get a thin piece of wood, and nail it as a little ledge at right angles on the top edge of your garden bed. It has to protrude a few inches. Thus protects the copper tape from the weather. -and use glue under the tape
Doesn't the copper eventually oxidize and turn pale green? I wonder if it still has an effect then...
You can buy serrated copper tape here 🇬🇧 If make the serrations stick up a bit they really don't like that. Under the lips of your pots you put Vaseline with salt mixed in. Under the lip the rain isn't going to touch it and it will definitely keep the slugs & snails away.
Sand repels snails also. I make a circle around the base of plant.
I noticed this earlier. I have some cactus / succulent compost that has a lot of sand in it and snails and slugs were standing up looking for how to avoid it!
I just bought some copper tape for my Greenstalk planter. Don’t know how they are climbing it so well, but their slime trail is giving them away. Can’t wait to tape a piece to the top of each planter pocket!
Holy mother of dragons.
I only have tiny snails. Not beasts like those!
I was thinking of super gluing copper pennies in a straight line across my pots. Now I need to do it and see if it works.
Did you get round to this??? Love to know the results
what's important is that you use copper that has a valence of +2 for this to work, because for some reason Copper with oxidation state of +2 reacts with the slime of the slugs causing an unpleasant reaction
What kind of wood do you use for your beds?
You could get some PVC pipe and cut a section out of it so you can slide it over the top of your garden beds that will give you a plastic surface to stick your copper tape on.
I like the idea of the electric fence, was thinking since it is the shock that removes them you should be able to use stainless steel wire instead, that way it will not oxidise.
Cool I am so getting some copper tape now 👍
Double width high quality copper helps when growing from a pot. But when growing directly in the earth, use strong espresso coffee powder...5/5 or 8/10 which ever you can buy and not weaker coffee bean powder. That is the strength that no slug likes.
EXCELLENT !!!
Sehr cool und interessantes Schneckenrennen liebe Lilly ;) LG Sepp
IF YOU PAINTED A STRIP OF CLEAR FINISH ON THE WOOD, THEN WHEN DRY APPLY THE COPPER TAPE.
I’ve got my raised bed on legs,i just wipe grease about 3 inches wide at the bottom of each leg, they don’t attempt to climb it.
Can you tell me what is the thickness of the tape and is it single side conductive?
There is copper mesh as well. That’s what I will be using 😊
Try the copper electric wire and 9v battery 100% effective
On the strip with the test, did you electrify that, or was it just the strip itself that deterred them?
A really cheap and edible way to keep sligs and snails out of your gardes is for 4 yeats now tried and true plant red leaf lettuce on yhr perimeter of your garden boxes plant seeds early spring 3 inches apart and put all other things inside of red lettuce perimiter. they don;t like red lettuce and they won't enter. i found out this by fluke of doing this.Happy Gardening and keep red lettuce growing pick single leaves when ready from each plant Enjoy.
I've seen enough tests in laboratory conditions of copper tape with literally thousands of slugs wander across them with impunity. There's no evidence this works. A lip or collar on the other hand does work. Also 9V is not a small shock, especially for a snail or slug. If the cannot pull away from it in time it will cause them to seize while touching both strands, then burst, and bubble, and boil away leaving goop everywhere. It's not pleasant to have to clean up. Use a lower voltage. You just need the stimuli, not enough to fry a snail.
Violence is not the answer. It's the question is the answer is always yes! 220V
@@explained6146 😂 love your humour omg
You certainly have a point on the 9V. I used an spare accu of my Bosch drill machine. When testing (made a little test circuit) it on 3 snails that feasted on my sunflower prouts one bubbled like crazy after 3 tries to pass the barier then got Idle (the house snail). One got stuck on the wire and got fried leaving a blue mark of the copper reaction on the snail (smaller naked snail, RIP). One also got zapped couple of times and than leaved crawling over the isolated parts of the wire. (bigger naked snail).
To be fair, i didn't have the guts to lay my tongue on this drill machine accu powered circuit, so I am gonna use just a 1,2V recharable battery on the bigger project. For now I reccomend a distance of 8 mm from the wires and put them in a way that the snails can fall of of it.
Hi if you cut a strip of polythene and stick the copper tape to that and staple it...
You may need to renew the tape every year or so as once the surface of the tape becomes discoloured, if find that it is no longer effective.
You could get some plastic sheets and cut them 2 inches thick or so, and screw them on to your raised beds so the tape will stick .
Great idea!
Thank you. Thus was helpfull.
For the tape: 1) use glue (wood) 2) if not use nails 3) use small wooden lines to nail over te edges of the wood so no air can touch it.
Do you have spray adhesive in your crafting stores? Spraying that onto the back of the copper tape and then putting it up in slightly over lapping strips might be helpful 🤷♀️👩🏻🌾🥰🥰
The sight of them turning away..... and even that large stubborn slug eventually giving up is so inspiring💕🥰
Good idea!
I thought I was being clever and bared 10 ft of copper Coaxial cable and formed it into "bracelets" for my plants. The one left over I put on the ground and put a slug in it. It wasn't the least bit effective, the slug just slid over it as though it wasn't there. I guess I should have tried it first... I'm beginning to think only a flame thrower will work on them!
Hi Lilly! Thank you for showing this to us. My current plant containers are plastic, so maybe the tape would work for me. While you were showing us the copper tape on the wood, I was wondering if you could electrify the copper tape? Thank you for showing this to us.
If you want to electrify it, you would need two strips which are insulated to each other, so you can connect the positive to one strip and the negative to the other, if you want to do this you better run multiple copper wires with a gap adjacent to each other, then connect the positiv and negativ pole alternately to the wires. If the snail closes the electric circuit by touching the two opposing poles a current will flow through the snail and probably k#ill it, if the current is large enough. I wouldn't do this at mains voltage since it's a safety concern, I would also not go over 50 volts AC or 120 volts DC since above those voltages it exists a major risk of serious electrocution which can k#ill people.
@@Universal_Craftsman Thank you! I think I'll just stick to plain tape, no need to take risks like that just for snails!
@@kele1264 No problem. What I saw, a 9 volt battery might suffice.
@@Universal_Craftsman Thanks!
When the wood is dry. Put some varnish on it. When varnish is still tacky put on the tape
Clean it with lemon juice when it oxidises and it works forever but I prefer beer traps
The way you detour slugs is intoxicating ❤ I must have you. Merry me
You could look for plastic U profiles that fit flush around the top rim, stick the copper tape on the profiles (with the seams at the 'inside' of the profile, protect the edges from curling and peeling off/loose): Tadaaaa... a nice copper trim for your planter! 😉
Would several strands of copper wire would work without battery? Also, I have heard that slugs and snails come to clean up the soil from excess iron. If that is true, then maybe we could use copper on the soil to remineralize copper.
Didnt finished the video, but since copper based medicines are avoided in aquariums with snails, my guess is that this tape should work On them, gl
I own 200 vending machines and ants just love to get in for the sugar . So you put Crisco on the machine legs and they wont clime up the legs I also did it with my peach trees and put tinfoil on the base with crisco and they wont go up give it a try . Good show
Whahaha, Crisco. In the Netherlands you can buy this in the adults toy shop. Not for baking....... ;-)
You don't have to use copper wire, use same gauge but steel wire. Or galvanised steel wire. The copper without electric is just a reaction between slime and copper, which they can feel. The wire doesn't have to be copper if electrified
Stainless steel should be most reliable, 1mm in diameter is fine to handle.
Aluminium tape is cheaper, and once you stick with the electric fence idea you probably do not need copper.
I would not use the wire instead. I use the wire more growth.
Honestly just pick up the snails in the evening and throw them over the fence right onto the road lol. At some point you'll have them all.
Good idea Lilly!
I'm left wondering if copper is a physical or chemical barrier for these marigold pests.
Smooth n treat the surface of your wood then apply your tape
I’d just drill a plastic boarder all round the veg bed then apply the tape. Tape seems a great deterrent and cruelty free so worth the hassle!!
i put this tape round my rabbit hutch and it worked perfectly
I've found chicken wire is also quite a good deterrent
👍👍👍👍💥thank you🙏......🐌
fill the sidewalks with a lot of ash, snails can't cross on it.
btw in my greenhouse very small naked slugs can descend from the top window on a mucoid thread like spiderman. that is horrible.
Hi the big is Very good to have in the garden it eats the others eggs 🌍🍀💚or use salt inside the greenhouse øko hope
Your dog is so cute 🥰
Thanks
The green usa statue of liberty is copper. The green is a caked layer of green buildup. The green probably doesn't deter them. You will have to keep shiny.
I bet you could wood glue the copper tape onto the wood raised bed
Did you try it, and did it work?
try using U-nails and steel wire connected to a 9V battery....
Them things are HUGE! I have tiny slugs lol
Looks good for keeping snails and slugs out, but I suspect the eggs are already in the soil in my veg plot so I still have a problem. Perhaps I need to encourage a few hedgehogs or thrushes into the garden.
you need to go into your garden every night and pick off the snails. then you should be good
Two things: there is a product I just ordered from Amazon called Sluggo. Highly rated. Read about it there so you can make your decision about it.
Also, I bought a blacklight flashlight from Amazon last year. If you go out to your garden at night and shine the blacklight on the stems of the plants, slugs and worms fluoresce - you can see them and pick them off before they cause too much damage. It works!!! I have to wear gloves because touching the worms and slugs is so gross! But it is effective. A tomato hornworm can decimate an entire tomato plant (and other plants) in one day. It is labor intensive, but worth it to save my vegetable plants. That is MY food, not theirs!
@@kele1264 I agree!! Those little bastards! It's a good thing that my neighbor is Korean and doesn't understand my mumblings.
@@alice30045 heeheehee Yes indeed! Careful, they may understand more than you think, and may believe you are cursing them! You go get those hornworms and slugs! (ick, so ick, but necessary).
@@kele1264 I do the mumbling under my breath, no chance that she'll hear me, she's a nice old lady and loves my flowers.
I use copper wire and a battery
How did I just find out that you have a gardening channel XD
I wonder where the birds are that would normally feast on the snails and slugs?
snails and slugs mostly come out in the night when not all the birds are around. also in my garden I rarely see bigger birds, only really small ones
they mostly come out at night...mostly
A can of adhesive spray
Can you use the 9 volt battery on two of these strips instead of wire?
you could! but you'd have to have the tape to not be a full circle (broken circle) and then electrically connect on battery terminal to one side of the tape loop and the other terminal to the other end of the tape loop
@@aleestuuh is that little battery enough for 14m circumference? my love is telling me that only would hold for 3 days and then i have to exchange it.
@@AlitaAlita2406 had one going for about a month, 2x 2m long loop (4m tape total) slight charge drop noticable. Probably still enough to deter - we had a huge slug problem but the fence still holds to this day!
Nah get the adhesive that works for wood. There are plenty. 3M should have some really good ones.
Silicone Sealant will stick it to the wood.
or use double sided tape from any hardware store. great idea tho!!
swiss accent? I just put one or e spiral of copper to my MArejuanna plants.... then u have to check no neighbourplants touchs ya plant. Greetz from ZH
I think it will be necessary to renew or polish the tape. I think a wet melamine sponge very cheap on amazon might work.
Not sure if work on thin tape, though.
Go slug!!!
aaaaw, Amy is such a cutie 😍 and she makes the same face as my dog girl when there is a slug or some other little creature she is not supposed to eat 🤣
and the slug is lookin like its checking itself out in the mirrored surface of the tape 😳😅
how long is going battery last? i suggest cheap speaker cable, other chanels using just metal wire
Long. It only uses a tiny amount of energy to zap the snails when they touch, it is there doing nothing most of the time. You would probably lose more energy due to self discharge over time. Which is 8% per year at 20c for this type of battery (higher average temp would lower lifetime, 40c gives about a lifetime of 1-2 years). If you swap the batteries every year or so it should be fine. Rechargeable batteries suffer more from self discharge, those should be charged every half year.
