The "Dumbed Down" portion was put back to normal before Paul rode it, it barely lasted 12 hours. Look at all the rocks tossed to the side in the woods next to that section, that's from people who went back and ripped out the "dumbing down work".
Was following the drama on Facebook. Impressive that people tore that work down in under 12 hours! Respect the character of the trail, that bit of Entrails is classic.
I am fine with building "go arounds" but not changing the main line to make it easier, unless absolutely no one can do it or if too many people are getting seriously hurt
Exactly, as long as the 'b-line' is longer and slower, and not a shortcut, then it's fine if there are alternative lines. But it also needs to be reasonably clear what is the main line, and ideally a trail not look like a 6 line choice that you have to pick one of because everyone keeps doing their own thing.
I think that if a trail is black it should remain as such and I also think that conquering jank is one of the best feelings. So I think that a well made ridearound is more acceptable than dumbing down a feature for everyone.

Great video Paul! My friend took me down entrails and boney on my first ever visit to Squamish to mtb and it was very intimidating but trusting the granite, your brakes and keeping lots of weight over the front wheel and it will go well as you can control the speed!
I think it's really up to the builders to change the trail, especially the main line. If they had to change it it looks like it's possible to put a bypass below it but even so just leave it to the builders. It's pretty annoying when you put in the work and people mess with it
Personally, I think that the best way to sort of "dumb down" a trail is to have a bypass around more technical features. I know this doesn't make sense for all trails, but when applicable I think bypasses usually are good.
I love how you show your honesty in the videos. The amount of run ups you do etc. Curious to know if Joel is also English? Bet you have some right banter on the trails.
I had the same problem at my trail a member not of The trail crew decided to change a perfectly good rock slab just so they could climb it the trails not even supposed to be climbed
At my local trails there was a section called devils staircase, it still exists just there’s now no staircase. In that case I’m not a fan of dumbing down the trail although the way the trail is now is still good.
Great video Paul! I just got the same bike (the cheaper pro 2 version) and I'm absolutely loving it. I'm curious which setting you are using for the flip chip on the rear suspension? Mine came set in plush, but I found I was getting pedal strikes on every ride so I flipped it to the high setting.
"Chill, enjoyable, fun"...just the way biking should be. See you on the trail one day. I am new to Squamish and you are a bit of a better rider than I am so your videos give me hope I can safely ride most of the features in your videos.
On one of our motorcycle trails someone cut a section of log out the way, mind you it wasn’t big or difficult. Then the trail builder went and screwed it back in place, I had a good ol laugh at that but I don’t blame him it’s his build.🤷🏼♂️
I’m not opposed to dumbing down. But if it’s a managed trail it’s best if it’s done by the managing crew imo. That said you do have to start building trails at some point. It’s still better to get involved with actual trail management if at all possible.
I think trail builders do a great job of building trails for different skill levels. I don’t think that people who aren’t involved with that process should dumb down trails. Sort of defeats the purpose. In some cases changes have to be made for sustainability of the trails but again they should be done in conjunction with the trail association in the area.
I’m surprised that he was out on those rolls in the soaking wet. It’s nice to know how the Kendas are performing as I’m thinking of going back to them on my next set especially now that they are tubeless ready
Hi Paul, for the steep stuff, it would be good if you could hold the camera horizontal to show how steep it is (get a spirit level ;) ). I can tell a lot of the sections are steep, due to the compression on the front suspension and your body position on the bike. Just on the video, because the camera is angled, it doesn't look "that steep" if you get my meaning?
dumbing down is ok sometimes, if its a feature that everyone struggles to clear, and i mean everyone, then it will need rework. or when its just janky and doesnt flow with the rest of the trail. but all only with the builders OK!
I have no knowledge of this trail or the change but... trails change. A trail starts out one way, then it gets ridden in all sorts of conditions, it erodes, etc. This happens slowly so what we think is still the original trail five years later is now more janky/ dangerous/ unsustainable/ etc, than it was ever intended to be. I've done my fair share of reroutes, rock armoring, etc, and have even had people yell "oh no they ruined it" while actively repairing a section of trail that had eroded into a six inch ditch. Also agree with not modifying a trail that you do not maintain without permission! Cheers!
I turn 60 this year. If the trail gets a little downgrade. I'm ok with it Coming into the season? I ride more in the winter. Way better temps for biking
If a feature does not fit the flow of a trail it should b dumbed down or removed. That’s the only time imo. Of course, if you aren’t qualified to determine if a feature fits or not, don’t mess with it.
my vote is leave the trails to the trail builders/trail association, if you have an issue with a certain section of the trail contact them with your concerns and maybe your suggestion for how you feel it would work better.
Do you ever consider using a full face helmet on a trail like this? Seems like even a minor slip on the wet rocks could be made much worse by loosing some teeth.
