I think yellowbrow triggered the man to cut him open. Before the poor man went crazy with the knife, the animation is like casting a spell that empties the mind. Yellowbrow probably did not like he was about to lose because people falling in line and getting civilized. But then it only takes one evil for everyone to follow.

You can see the man's jacket is pulled by an invisible force: the turtle pushed him over the edge. I like how complex that made the turtles bet: humans did eventually give in to greed, but he cheated. How long would it have taken without his push? He made it nearly impossible for them to win, choosing an impoverished place and instead of teaching them anything that could better them, lavishing them with excessive wealth and fortune
The story is more than just about the human greed.

Jin Chanzi the monk=>the previous incarnation of Tang SanZang
Turtle spirit=>the previous incarnation of Yellow Brow, and the turtle wasn’t his true form. He just temporarily appeared as turtle.
The monk and the turtle, they were Dharma brothers practicing Buddhism under the same lineage. That’s why the monk called him 师兄(Shi Xiong/Senior Brother) in the Chinese dub.
They had differing views over human nature and the turtle believed that humans were inherently evil (humans are evil by nature->therefore they will turn greedy and have bad deed eventually), and the turtle had very twisted obsession to win the debate.
To prove himself right, he descended into the mortal realm and appeared as a giant turtle, purposely letting the impoverished villagers capture him. Then he started showing off his super natural powers including healing, secreting pearls, granting youth and beauty, fishing from sea using water bending etc.
Being plagued with poverty for so long, the impoverished villagers started insanely worshipping him as the Buddha’s avatar (which is a lie and going against Buddha’s teaching). The insatiable desires grew as much as the lives of the people there were bettered.
Instead of offering guidance and teaching people to grow wiser and be self-resilient, the giant turtle intentionally gave them the easy way out and cultivated their greed and made them heavily dependent on him. At the end, the villagers lost their sanity as he expected.
And he proudly said to his junior brother Jin Chanzi that he won the debate and proved that humans were simply evil.
Jin Chanzi criticised him for “ inverting the consequence and cause” i.e. creating a desired consequence and to prove his own belief of the existence of an evil nature within man.

2.unelightened sentient beings are constantly involved in process of reincarnation and undergoing different life forms depending on their karma, like going back n forth btw human, youguai, celestial beings (like the Yellow Brow himself), animals, bugs or suffering souls in hell etc. so there is no reason to discriminate any of them.
3. Not only undergoing different life forms, uneligtened ones also uncontrollably undergo states of being kind/evil depending on their karmic habits and cycles. Good people can go evil, vice versa. Because there is simply no fixed nature in sentient beings. The Yellow Brow has no reasons to justify his discrimination against man.
Buddhas don't just naturally exist as Buddhas from the start. They, like Jin Chanzi or Yellow Brow or the villagers, were also once wandering souls in the universe. And after eons of being good and bad, some of the souls begin to seek ways to ascend beyond mortal. And after eons of attempts, they find the way. Then after eons of cultivation, they are fully enlightened.
That Yellow Brow rigged the situation to justify his view is just sheer ignorance and arrogance. Or pathetic like what Jin Chanzi said.

i don't agree on that ...yes he won, but only under specific circumstances -- most of the test subjects he chose were poor, busy dealing with hardship and probably lack of exposure to the bigger world as well as impact of karma & the samsara, even there were some monks and officials among them, they probably don’t see beyond their current lives.
It is like putting candies in front of 3-year-olds and tell them to resist temptation with them yet to develop the deep cognition and intelligence to understand the purpose & significance of resisting it.
People don’t raise their kids by simply giving kids what they want all the time because that sure ruins the kids for good.
Guiding souls to mature has same logic.

I thought it was about a story of greed but by the end it was for vindication. The turtle knew that the village was suffering and instead of freeing them of their suffering he made them suffer more all to win a bet that humans are evil. He did not win. Only made an example.

@@SchwarzeSun In Buddha teaching life is a cycle of suffering and rebirth. If you do bad things you become poor as punishment in your next life or become an animal in the next afterlife. If you do good you go higher in the cycle. Because he made them crave for greed and because he played with their greed he sent them too damnation. Therefore the village was abandoned and in a much worse state when he died.

Then when he did get there, instead of giving them better fishing techniques or teaching them how to build better boats or create better medicine, he quickly made then dependent on him and his magic. Of course the humans were going to go crazy after all that. Had their village not been ruined already, they likely wouldn't have been so desperate.

1. When he was rescued by fishermen, they already knew he is not human, but rescued him anyway.
2. When rescued, he can’t wait to show fishermen that he has golds and pearls under his skins. Yet, the villagers didn’t kill him.
3. Instead villagers worshipped him, sent him tributes, built temples. It’s “fair trade”
4. Official and monks didn’t take the treasures themselves. They hire someone to dispense them fairly.
5. When that one villager was lured, officials first reaction was to stop him and other mobs. They were trying to maintain orders.
Humankind has proven lots of time that they are not greedy nor heartless, but Huang Mei only needs to win once.
If one means to test the hardness of something, one will break it eventually. Don’t push humanity to limit.
He also destroyed several fishermen boats when he made it rain. So they were forced to be dependent on him.

Yellow brow reversed the logics of karma, he wants to prove human are greedy, which is the result he wants to prove. But Jin Chanzi claimed the greeds among human are actually the reason and cause, instead of result. It's like writing a paper with confirmation bias. It reminds me of a project I done. The purpose was to find a way to reduce carbon foot print, but the solution was decided in the beginning and the rest of the work is to collect piece of information that in favour of the original proposal instead of find the actual way. We know that we do it just for the purpose of passing the course with a decent grade, in which we did achieved.

okay, yes, human's greed is limitless. BUT the turtle did something to win the bet against Jinchanzi. 2:13 you can see something pull his shirt, something blind his eyes. I think the turtle did that. Jinchanzi knew that, he did not blame human but the turtle 4:14. so this animation is not just about human's greed, it's also about the ego for winning.

Man the music is….actually insane once it kicks in 2:29 like it feels so twisted compared to when you hear it from the official trailer 3 years ago. I just finished chapter 3 and after watching this cutscene, I’m pretty sure this is without question a 10/10 game for me.

The first time I saw this without context was genuinely horrifying
Legit, I came across this cutscene in a video that popped up in my recommendation, I clicked on it because it looked funky, I saw the animation and slowly locked in, then the turtle got torn apart and I was absolutely in awe at how unsettling it felt watching those people tear apart the very thing that tried to help them.

The original lore is a bit different from the game lore. Yellow Brown in the game is an egotistical character who always think that he has achieved enlightening and posed as a Buddha because he saw the darkness in humanity. He love to bring out the darkness and pass judgement upon on other but never sought to help/ redeem them and Buddhism is actually the opposite of what he was doing.
This is exactly the game lore as shown here in the animation.
This story happened in the Earlier Era of Investiture of the gods thousands of years before journey to the west. The setting was prior the schism in the Buddhist belief. Yellowbrow was supposed to represent a Theravada Buddhist and Jinchanzi a Mahayana Buddhist.
The animation in Chapter 3 is really great, especially the scene of people grabbing jewelry, which is worth watching frame by frame. Each picture is a work of art with high information content

Even I find this scene sad. Though the “Turtle” is to blame, Humans are corruptible and let their greed and petty desires overwhelm their reasons. The turtle is a buddha, sent to test the humans. When the humans let their greed take over, he won his bet (probably with the monk). Fun fact, the monk is Tang Sanzhang’s previous incarnation.
I guess this is in alignment with this chapter’s theme of greedy and selfishness, culminating with the final Yellow Robe boss.

You can see that his collar seemed to be pulled before he acted, but the expression on the turtle's face was different when he fell. Like Laughing (3:00). That's why jinchanzu accused him

On the surface, this story tells of humans killing giant turtles that constantly bestow their wealth on them because of their greed for wealth.But the final outcome reveals a deeper meaning of this story. The old turtle is Huangmei's reincarnation, who deliberately lured humans with wealth to make them obtain without effort in order to prove that human nature is greedy and cannot be changed for good through Buddhist teachings.From the very beginning, he deliberately adopted means to stimulate people's inner greed in order to prove his theory was correct. It is similar to the story of shooting an arrow first and then drawing a target. So this story is not about human greed like the first one, but about Huangmei's obsession. He did everything he could to prove himself right to Jinchanzi, which corresponds to the Buddhist concept of obsession as one of the three poisons.(The first story corresponds to greed, and the second story corresponds to anger)
In detail, you can see that when the person who took a knife to hurt the old turtle made his first move, his collar was pulled forward. At the same time, the eyes of the old turtle glowed, suggesting that he was casting a spell and manipulating the first person to harm himself in order to lure others into action.Meanwhile, in the subsequent scene where he falls dead, if you reverse the camera and look at it, you can see that his mouth is tilted up when he dies, smiling because he firmly believes that he has won again.

And the fact that all this happened because of a debate between two monks about human nature.….and one simply wanted to prove the other wrong.
Me and my brother had a little philosophical discussion after watching this scene. I feel like i learned something new :)

The turtle is yellow brow, of a different incarnation, he and Jinchanzi (Sanzang/ Wukong’s master) had the a same mentor and in the same branch, Yellowbrow debate against Jinchanzi, that the nature of Human is Evil, instead of Good, to prove his point he bet on his entire cycle to win against Jinchanzi, he came down to human world as a leatherneck turtle that bleed treasure, shed medicines, and spill mucus that turn people young and beautiful, eventually greed took over the village, they killed what they worship, and soon the village is abandoned because the social structure is destroyed along with the turtle god (in the cutscene, Yellowbrow summons tornadoes that bring forth fishes, but also destroyed fishing boats, he give people fish instead teaching people to fish). Jinchanzi came across Yellowbrow telling him he turned the cause and effect around but he made the point by his intention of proving a point.
I had a feeling that he was Sanzan or was at least connected to him. I kind of imagined Sanzan sounding something like that.
(Despite not having gotten to him in the book yet, I'm still reading the beginning 😅)

Yellowbrow did an experiment try to prove humans greedy, yet by doing the experiment, Yellowbrow himself fell into the cycle of life and death, winning and losing. If yellowbrow had really achieved nothingness, he would not have conducted the experiment, and the villagers would not have destroyed themselves with greed, and lived peacefully through their lives.
So, the irony is the more yellowbrow tried to prove himself, the more unqualified he was at Buddhahood.

This magical supernatural being, to me was nature, while people depicted human greed of taking more and more from nature not knowing when to stop themselves. Then I watched an American streamer play the game arrive to the same sequence and depict the supernatural being as the millionaire and the humans as the poor people; funny how you can arrive at different meaning based on your life experience through arts.
You are right my conclusion was even if god exist he would not show himself to the world because the people will tear him apart for thier own greed. I think they already do they only go to him because they think he can make everything right. People like god because they think they can benefit from him.

After rewatching this a few times, what strikes me the most is how sad it all is. The mortal realm is impoverished, ugly, dull. Yellowbrow introduces not only wealth but beauty and prosperity beyond their comprehension - even during the slaughter, the flashing grey frames reveal the how the mortals were united in suffering, and their joy of being released from it. Even the first thief, initially drawn as sensible, would throw away all self-preservation for the chance at prosperity. Anyone would.

The stories and meanings shown in the animations at the end of each chapter are so profound. This is top-notch art.
Yellowbrow has a strong desire to win against Jinchanzi, and you can see in the game that he has taken on 4 disciples:

Actually no, he gave them a ton of fish at a point where they had nothing, while yes prices of sea products would drop they would not have starved. Since he only gave them something as simple as pearls while the pearls are cheap in their local economy they can trade them far away from goods and products in places with out pearls. It would have taken centuries for their price to drop and even then they would be very valuable.
Yellowbrow give the villagers free pearls just by bleeding it, this is just like using a machine to print money. I am surprised this doesn't caused some pearl inflation.

There's also a very subtle detail, the turtle brought fortune and wellness to the village, but in the last scene, they still appear to poor, because the authorities took over, and they only give the villagers what they worked for...kinda ironic isn't it? Humanity's desire to control things and unwilling to share, even if the resources are unlimited...
And just in one push it all collaps itself where even the monks and the authorities endulged themselve to on this frenzy.
well that isn't the effect of humans, there is a reason the world we live in was not made with such a situation, something that can give unlimited resources will in any situation either by worshipped and dependent on by those who have never had wealth, or milked for resources by those who are wealthy and want to advance in their life. They put these creatures in a unnatural situation and expected them to act naturally, it mirrors someone specifically pressuring and annoying one person, barraging them with insults, and then calling them violent and threatening to call the cops after they punch you in the face. But in this case it's more like a type of grooming. If you want to show how humanity or mortals are evil, then you have to show a situation created by themselves. Infact I take that as a reason why humanity will never meet their gods until death, for they know better.

Wrong interpretation. Yellowbrow made them to depend their economy on him. He destroyed their boats using tornadoes he created to give them fish. He gave them jewelry as reward instead of letting them trade with the outside. The authorities created order to dispense it fairly.
Humans are all good, it’s just that we are weak to temptation.
They weren't poor, just dressed in their casual clothes. In the previous scene at the temple they all have fancy clothes. The villagers had managed to create an organized and sustainable system that evenly distributed the pearls that Yellowbrow produced so he wouldn't have to cut himself too much and everyone got their needs covered. This had the potential to stay like that forever with everyone living happily which is why Yellowbrow had to shit all over it and force the outcome with magic.

It's a story about yellowbrow. He manipulated the poor people to prove his point that people are born greedy. It shows that he only cares about winning arguments, and will go to lengths to prove his points.

Second level is human nature being evil or not, or in buddhism, whether humanity can be educated and led to enlightenment. Third level is result vs reason. As the monk laughed on the turtles for the invalidity of his experiment by coming into the bet with a planned play on humanity. Fourth is his insistance on winning. Insistance being an evil in Bhuddism and obstacle to enlightenment itself, explaining why Yellow Brow has seemingly won the bet but at the same time already lost.
This has been the highlight of the game so far. I'm at the start of chapter 5 right now. I don't know how they're going to top this.

No it's definitely the turtle. Read between the lines, specifically where it destroys there ships and makes them only rely on him.
He destroyed the ships so they would have to rely on him to survive and then they showed kindness and made rules, worshipping him as a god. In time he gave in to his own greed to win the bet and cast a spell on that man and pulled the man towards him. So in a way he won because humans turned evil but it was also done so by his chaos nature and so in a way he also lost. He was never satisfied when humans showed good deeds, he wanted them to be evil and this would satisfy his ego.
