I know this scene since I was a collegiate ballroom dancesporter and social ballroom dancer myself. This is where Gere tries to do the rumba with Bobbie with Paulina's tutelage in preparation for the Taplinger Trophy ballroom dance competition. The Novice competition. Novice is beyond gold syllabus level in Latin competition, where you are allowed to do some (but not all) open style moves beyond syllabus (a list of school moves you need to do for that typical dance). The upper levels beyond novice are pre-championship and then championship. So here, Gere starts off his rumba, and her partner nearly quickly catches the leader with bad characterization--in this case, he keeps his arms and hand styling too introvert (not way too open), and fails to look at the partner intimately enough. Such bad characterization on the competitive dance floor in rumba, even if you dance on time to the music, will be seen by the judges still, and if caught with this introversion, the judge can mark you off big time on points, and even if not disqualified, you will not likely make it past the first heat and not be recalled for future heats. When the lady decides to terminate the dance on Gere quite early due to this big faux pas, and says "It's the rumba! It is the dance of love!", I know what that woman was talking about!
