Why this Porsche 964 Carrera 4 is my all time favourite 911

- Porsche 911 964 Carrera 4 model review and history from an owners perspective including where the Porsche 964 model sits in the design history and evolution of this famous Porsche 911 model, how it differs from the Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 it replaced in 1989 and what's it's like to drive and own. Ross Furlong offers his own very personal take on a car he bought ten years ago and in his own words is 'his all time favourite 911 in his all time favourite spec".
Great video... I have an Amazon Green 91, C4 cabriolet since new. I loved it then, and still love it now. Agree with you statements about sound, gearbox...etc. it's just perfect for me.
From new - wow, congratulations. Your service file must be a real doorstep by now!
What a soothing video , it’s a shame the uk population isnt made up of more people like you .
Thank you 🙏
1991 964 c4 has a road feel that is indescribable and unlike anything else...as you said in the video the feeling of this car is visceral and can not be defined. Well done video British guy.
You're very kind, one tries 🧐
I recognise that little laugh you make as you put your foot down Ross. Great videos and I'm looking forward to your next offerings. I have a 996 C4 that I love. I'm doing little changes to it as I go along. All the best
Thanks Will 🙏
Not bad for your first video! Very well produced and interesting, some new content I hadn't heard about before. If you want to review a 997 GT3, let me know!
Thanks Paul, appreciate the feedback. I might well take you up on the 997 GT3 offer!
We’ll done! Your passion for the 964 comes across, and it does look terrific in slate grey. I’m more drawn to the curves of the 993, but no doubt the 964 is a special machine.
Thanks Jon, I’ve owned a 993 Targa previously and it was also a very beautiful thing. Close run thing between the two for me.
@@RossOnCars Well… I just bought a slate grey/black ‘93 Carrera 2. I gradually shifted my opinion and fell for the 964. 17” Cup wheels but otherwise similar to yours. Still like the 993, but this 964 was too nice to pass on.
@@jonwarshawsky5288 Congratulations Jon, wishing you many happy hours of motoring in the 964.
Great video and like you my favourite 911. I’m shocked to see you have so few followers given the quality of the video.
How have you found general ride after lowering yours?
Thanks Ray - I guess I'm relatively new and interesting cars have been a little hard to get hold of but I've got some cool Italian stuff coming soon. The ride quality was not diminished by lowering - the whole thing just felt like it was on rails. I remember thinking it felt much more 'track' but not less comfortable.
I bought my 911 turbo cab new in 1989 and it's still a blast to drive. My daily driver in good weather.
Nice, have you had an engine rebuild?
@@RossOnCars all original thank God! (except conv top)
would love to have a 964 someday, prices have gotten too crazy though
Nice balanced review , the roads look just right for the car around where you live. Will check out your next reviews , Regds another Porsche owner
The camera doesn't do the 964 any justice. Seeing one in person will make you realize that it is the ultimate 911. For years I was pro 993 until I saw a good example of a 964.
Yes the 964 just edges it for me too.
Many Congratulations on your ' Opus One ' Ross and indeed on your 964!!
Lovely car, colour and spec too. I agree about the 964. Retaining the classic shape for the most part, it is my favourite 911 and the sound of that engine is remarkably unforgettable so many thanks for sharing.
Keep enjoying and safe driving!!
Thanks, hope you like the 964 RS video too - coming soon.
@@RossOnCars thanks for the heads-up. I'll certainly be looking out for it!!
about to drive a 964 on the coming weekend and this was super informative!
Thanks, enjoy the 964 - mine is still lovely to drive after all these years, I feel much more connected to the road and the driving experience when I’m in mine.
@@RossOnCars Thank you Ross, glad to see you still make videos! Keep it up. You deserve way more subs
I have a 991.2 Turbo S and I want to buy an older one too. So I'm comparing the 964 with the 993. That's why I watched this video. I think you just made me choose for the 964.
I've had both and the 964 shades it for me. 993 still a very lovely thing though.
Nice video, well presented. I must say my favourite 911 is the 997, but they're all great, each to their own!
Thanks! I had a 997 4S - loved it too.
19k 10 years ago. I remember when they used to be that much, I was in my second year at uni and used to browse autotrader on my ipad telling myself when I gradutae, work I could get one. Soon after finsihing uni and in the process of saving up met a old man with a Porsche key and we got talking. He told me trouble with the car is by the time you can afford one youll be old. At the time I thought to myself I better get itnow whiles im single but never did. Now 10 years later married, mortgage and 2 kids the dream seems to be just that and perhaps the old man was right...
Hey Zafir, I read somewhere the average age of a 911 owner is 52, but that's not that 'old' these days if you keep fit and healthy. Something to look forward to 😉 I hope you get to buy and enjoy one soon. The 996 is a good entry point.
Nice car. I have a 993 (slate grey) along side a Carrera 3.2 and agree the 964 is a more connected car to drive.
Nice to have both - a Carrera 3.2 is on my list for sure
Good video Ross. I'm the proud custodian of a guards red C4... So everything you say rings true with me.
Thanks Vincenzo, guards red is such an iconic colour for this era 911 👏
wonderful video. I just bought the EXACT same spec but in LHD.
Thanks and congratulations on a discerning choice ;). Mine is having its engine rebuilt at the moment (gulp) - video to come on that soon.
Great review, I hope that RS is finished in maritime blue, and looking forward to it
I think it is a Ruby Red RS, but I'm with you on the blue
Nice video. Got a 964 myself and still like watching others talk about 964’s. Question on your exhaust set up, is it stock or has it been modified?
Thanks 🙏 No mods on the exhaust - it's pretty much factory spec apart from the lowered suspension - that front wheel to arch gap was annoying me 🤣
Thanks for replying. Somehow yours sounds better, at 6:00 into video can hear clear engine/exhaust as you drive away, better fuller tone and deeper which I prefer, compare to mine. Was guessing a modded exhaust, and wanted to try the same. Perhaps there is a filter on the recorded audio? Mine and other 964’s I’ve driven/listened to have a higher pitch whine mixed into engine/exhaust note. Love the slate grey, best 964 color…
Great video, this demonstrates the capacity of a good 911 to provide different things to different owners. Correctly specified you can have a gentleman's GT capable of both attacking the twisties but also comfortably carrying the owner along a long motorway journey.
Thanks and excellent point. You can even take the kids to school in a 911 - such flexibility a huge part of its success over the last 50 years.
Nice video, great car!
I’m happy to share that a 964 C2 Convertible in slate grey is the perfect (summer-) family car as well as being a «communicator/social»-car other people enjoy seeing, many positive comments and smiles, the engine is just great in sound and effect!
looking forward to see your RS-video, best greetings! R
Very nice - hope the weather holds for you this summer 👍☀️
Thank you for your vid, more Porsche content please.
Thanks Mark, more Porsche content coming for sure.
Superb premier Ross! I thoroughly enjoyed your video. I do agree that the 964 is one of the best 911's made. I may be a bit biased of course! 🙂 I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to what is to come. Thanks for sharing your passion. Cheers!
Thanks! Filming the 964 RS next week - should be an interesting comparison.
@@RossOnCars brilliant! I look forward to it! Cheers!
Nice video Ross, look forward to the next one. I very much enjoyed my 993 (held for 14 years before I got the itch to change). Interested to hear about the 964 - although there is no space in the garage!
Thanks Gavin, I've often thought about adding a slate grey 993 to the garage, but I have a similar space issue!
Great first video!
Thanks Thomas 🙏
Nice car. I love my C4. I wish it had the Sports Seats. I had those in my Turbo 3.6. Most comfortable seats ever. Btw the gearbox is G64.
G64 yes, I sit (comfortably) corrected :)

Thanks and best regards
Definitely more coming on 964s!
Thank you for a fantastic video, really enjoyed it. Well done. Think i need to test drive a 964.....
Belated thanks, did you test drive one?
@@RossOnCars I bought a 964 turbo then drove it, bit the wrong way around. Im very impressed though... Its a beautiful car...
@@paulcatherall4545 Congrats, great choice, good investment too 👌
@@RossOnCars Thank you Ross. Im shocked how quick it is. I have a 991 Turbo but the 964 really surprised me.

superb video, informative !
Thanks Rushi!
Your first video and it's top notch. Regarding the lowering, was it just springs? And any adjustments to the alignment to maintain the camber?
Thanks Eli. Cliff Lowe at Project Nine did the work, he recommends a full coilover suspension kit.
When do you anticipate the RS video to come out? I’m super looking forward to the comparison. Thank you!
Hi Ali, filming that one in August. Got a Vanquish coming up next week or so..
Nice Panerai A 964 is my dream Porsche with the sports seats.
Thanks Joshua - nice watches and cars go together I feel :)
Enjoyable description and drive. Over the years, I have had 4 Porsche's. 1984- 911 --1987 turbo- Currently have a 1991 964 C4 and a 2005 996 Turbo. All are Cab's.. I have enjoyed each one, but my lease favorite was the 1987 Turbo, mainly because it was a 4 speed and pulled like a logging truck until over 2000 rpm, then it felt like a rocket sled. Some may say that was exciting and it was. But any driving in the city was difficult. Maybe you did not get to the 964 engine, but it is a twin plug. Two distributors and two plugs per cylinder? It feels very connected and wants to rev and be driver. Finally the 996 turbo is quite civilized and has a tiptronic transmission.... My first automatic. It wants to run and rev and will go much faster than most can handle. Keep up the good work?
Thanks Mike, interesting to hear your view on various models. I've always fancied a 996 Turbo.
@@RossOnCars When I started canvassing for sale 996's , I had decided to attempt to purchase one because they had depreciated so much. I considered regular 996, then looked at turbo's and finally found a Turbo S. They had it priced at $65,000 US. I had it stored in my research when I got a message they had lowered the price by $10,000. That is when I got in action and purchased it. The 996 has 24,000 miles. I did not plan on getting an automatic, but that was available. I have to say I do like the automatic tip, a little surprising. I did receive the original invoice from 2005 and was surprised that it sold for $157,000. Back when that was more real money than today. So, it depreciated about 2/3. of original. Currently the prices have increased and seem to be above $70,000.. Does cause me to consider selling, but what would I replace it with? Maybe just wait till they depreciate again? Not sure.... But I do recommend driving one to see if you like it...
@@mikeeasterwood9625 sounds like a smart buy, I’ll try and get one in for review, see what’s what.
@@RossOnCars I will look forward to seeing your review!
Great video. Looking forward to the RS video. Can you please drive the RS and compare the driving experience to your C4. I’d love to know what the realistic driving experience is between the two given the price difference and C2 vs C4 and if there is a massive difference in the driving experience between the two. Thanks so much!
I will definitely be drawing comparisons, plus interviewing a real expert who races them!
All you need to know about this car, is exemplified here, in one of my all time favourite YT Porsche videos:
ua-cam.com/video/8jt5dj-keAs/v-deo.html
No, I don’t condone this kind of driving on the public highway.
Great car , the 964 Is what I think the last of the great lookers of the 911 . Just my opinion 😎
Thanks Joe, those ‘canonball tubes’ do it for me.
Sweet..☘️
Man I wish I'd bought one five years ago
Really nice car, great combination.
Thanks David, can’t beat a slate grey 911 in my book.
@@RossOnCars Ross, I have a metallic midnight blue car, have to say it’s a stunning colour and when the sun gets on it it looks amazing.
Midnight blue or black would be my other choices - blue quite unusual too 👏
Hello - many thanks for the vid - really interesting. Can I ask - how do you describe the handling and ride from "original suspension to lowered"... what's the before and after? many thanks! (I have a C2 Cabrio 964... contemplating lowering...)
Hi Alex, I remember when I got it done feeling like the car was handling as if on rails - very precise. No real loss of comfort. It was a win win.
Bought one new in 1991,a nice ride a 964/4
Nice, how long did you have it for?

Nice 964 and nice Panerai.
Thanks Dale, is that a 997 4S in your profile pic?
@@RossOnCars Yes. I had a 97 993 C4S and 80 Targa SC - I sold them a few years ago and bought a 991. Miss them, but I wanted more of an everyday driver. However, I did buy a 914 and looking at 1969 912. Nice video Ross. All the best. Dale
Hello Ross, I also have a 964 coupe (C2 tiptronic) with D90 wheels like yours and the previous owner fitted bilstein adjustable springs & dampers and it looks low (even at the highest setting I can get it to) just like yours is now. I want to return my 964 to the original factory ride height even though they do look excessively high particularly at the front as you mentioned. Do you still have your original springs & dampers and would you be willing to sell them? Many thanks, Andrew
Hi Andrew, I don't have them but you might try Cliff at ProjectNine - he did the work and might be able to advise on how to return your 964 to factory ride height.
Stunning car, great video, I am of course completely biased, as I am friends with the original owner.
I'm hoping to reunite him with the car at some point - would be a nice moment
@@RossOnCars that would be brilliant.
Complet agree❤
I like all 911's but the 996 C4S is the one id have...
Definitely the pick of the 996’s for sure - a very pretty 911.

Nice OEM spec!
I owned 1990 c4 here in Florida and though had a few running issues wish I had kept it. More recently owned and was totaled a 2004 C4S. Nice car but the 964 will remain the one I miss the most of all my sports cars.
I had a C4S too - 2010, lovely car, got some fab photos of it on an Italian road trip pre-kids. Quite fancy a 991 at the moment, but the 964 is a keeper.
Is the cerrera 2 better than c4
Hi Ronald, excellent question. Opinions vary, it's quite personal. I should be able to give you an informed answer soon when I drive the 964RS.
I just was watching a video on the 964 cerrera celebration
Man I stopped watching the video when I noticed that your belt does not match the color of your shoes. Please shot it again with the tight colors so I can finish to watch it
Actually that's not strictly true - both are brown, I do make an effort in these sartorial areas :)
@@RossOnCars the important thing is that the car is impeccable!
Das Radio 😆
As a 964 owner, the C4 is the most boring one. It's too heavy and has nothing of the charismatic 911 feeling that the C2 has. That being said, those are garbage compared to a modern one. Leaking oil, bad driving position, always an issue. People just speculate with those. But today 120k also gets you a 991.2 S which is a much better car.
Mine doesn't leak oil or have a bad driving position. The feeling you get, on a dual carriage way, at 7,000 revs in third gear is unmatchable in a modern 911. You are right about the 991.2 S though - it will probably be my next 911, but I'm keeping the 964!
A 964 is not a 911.
Why?
Not sure I follow you?
