- Comparing the pod race from Star Wars Episode 1 with the Ben Hur chariot race and Pinchcliffe Grand Prix race.
Growing up I was always aware this set piece from The Phantom Menace was essentially an homage to the chariot race in Ben Hur - then I saw Pinchcliffe Grand Prix earlier this year - so thought I'd see how well they can be made to line up along with a few other references/common tropes to mix it up.

02:00 Arrival at race

04:55 Start your engines

I just want to mention how incredibly entertaining it is to watch three movies at the same time all with vaguely similar plot structure and pacing. This video is a treat.
Lucas was big fan of Formula1 and a racer in youth. So each of his Star Wars movies has a racing scene.
1 - podracing
2 - Coruscant chase
3 - Obi-Wan chasing Grievous
4 - Death Star Trench
5 - Asteroid canyon chase
6 - Speederbikes.
thats nice to know
Oh very well
Interesting. There’s a lot of videos about the inspirations for the original trilogy but not as many about the prequels.
But they came from books so he wrote scripts to adaptation for films.
Creativity does not exist in the way you might think, all we do is combine and remix already existing ideas into something new, this is why we gradually invent new things, and didn't go from the stone age to computers instantly.
What you see in this video is called inspiration. Inspiration is taking one idea, then making some noticeable changes so it becomes it's own thing, but still has similar qualities to it.
Also similar ideas can also come from random chance.
Originality just means having obscure sources.
obviously this is not the case, but there are also times when you make something similar by pure chance, because when you create something, there is a big chance you end up with the same ideas as someone else because in the search for perfection things converge into one thing.
Impressive work! Much respect. I did not know that Ben Hur was so similar to Phantom Menace and that it is with this much inspiration George created his own sci-fi race.
Great video, man you deserve a whole lot more recognition!!!!!!!
I can't believe I never thought to compare the pods to chariots. It seems so obvious now, even down to the wires connecting the cockpit to the engines.
Yes, and Anakin, at least in Phantom Menace, is akin to Judah Ben Hur because in both cases, the race leads to their freedom, though they have started out practicing the sport as slaves. And in a way, Sebulba in the pod racing scene is akin to Messala in the chariot racing scene in Ben Hur because both fight by unjust means (Sebulba tampers with Anakin's pod and Messala has those spikey things on his chariot).
But in Revenge of the Sith Anakin is like Messala because he has a similar harrowing scene on the operating table, though not because of the race.
wow... never realized that pod racing was chariot racing from a galaxy far far away.
I recommend looking up the movie Grand Prix. George Lucas copied scenes from that movie as well like when Anakin fiddles with the switches to get the Pod Racer started.
totally! skip to the race start of my video to see it
@@MrRazNZ I'm talking about a live action movie simply called "Grand Prix" made in 1966.
@@ShamanMcLamie ahh I see. Just looked it up now. Looks to me like Pinchcliffe used that movie a lot for reference as well. Bugger, I shoulda cut some clips of that in!
Flåklypa as it is called here in norway is one of the proudest things for Norwegians. I have watched flåklypa grand prix so many timestaht i almost know the whole dialog of the movie haha
Great video, thank you so much for uploading this. Definitely deserves way more views!
So the Starwars universe is based upon a broke bicycle repair worker from Norway? Interesting :D
Incredible how much resemblance there was!
Incredible edit! Great stuff! :D
Not even a star wars fan - this was fascinating!
So no one is going to talk about this perfect transition right here 2:00
Yeah I started out editing this video intending it to be a lot 'fancier' but it just took so long! So I simplified a lot for the rest.
@@MrRazNZ I know how you feel editing takes so long to perfect everything
FLÅKLYPA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
when i saw tpm in theaters in 1999 i was 24, my dad went with me and he told me the pod race reminded him of teh ben hur race.
Awesome work Sir .
Jabba the hutt is the gologabgalog
this video deserves so much more love
Very well done 👍
That's awesome! 😁👍
well done. You can even reference the little rascals go kart derby race too
ooo I'll have to watch this
When I first saw the Pod race in 99 when I was 13, I thought it was awesome x
I’m literally hurting my brain that you just ran 7 movies in one video
splat
Great vid !
WOOTINI
Interesting
GG, very interessant video
You fail to mention that there is probably another scene in the prequels that is inspired by Bern Hur, or to be more precise by Messala's death scene after the race: Anakin's final transformation into Darth Vader on the operating table at the end of Revenge of the Sith. In both cases, you basically have a human being turned into a monster through pain, and you can see how both are fighting and rebelling against what is happening to them...
Though I'm not entirely sure George was aware of this inspiration in the latter case; besides, the two scenes are farther apart than in Ben Hur.
Podracers are literally just futuristic racing chariots. Replace the horses with jet engines and boom, you got a pod racer.
Simpson Did it! Simpsons Did it! Simpson Did it! Simpsons Did it! Simpson Did it! Simpsons Did it!
Love
That's fun to see the similarities. A treasured, little national movie made in the 70s by 5 guys, perhaps, inspired a movie that ended up banking $1.027 billion USD on box office? That didn't hit me before now. Thank you.
🎉
8:20 someone didn’t turn their head.
Neither did a few others in the crowd who also didn’t turn their heads.
14:27 XDDD DDDD
Flaklypa grand prix 1975 norway film of animation stop motion
There is nothing new under the sun.
I'm confused about the part where both screens show Tusken raiders.
self-referential. Same as the podracers doing the Falcon trick from the asteroid chase. Likepoetrytheyrhyme
When you are a nobody it's plagiarism .When you are rich and famous it's "creative inspiration" or paying "homage".
But I do think there is a difference between taking an inspiration and owning up to it (which is, in many cases, intended or understood as a tribute) and simply copying somebody else's idea and keeping your mouth shut about it while pretending to be "innovative". The SW/Ben Hur connection can probably be counted amongst the former.
Great video. I still feel like George's version is the most badass. As much hate as the Phantom Menace got, the podracing scene is still legendary. That and Darth Maul lol
NORGE
to me Star wars is better then any other movie so you say that Star Wars copped them well i say they copped Star Wars
Have you ever seen Flåklypa?
