Got to give an honerable mention to the fate of the Mean Six. Yes they were originally just magical clones but they were still living, sentient creatures with a mind of their own. And they got melted back into chunks of wood by the tree of harmony. No one other than Chrysalis even knew of their existence.
Doesn't make sense for me too. If they were cannibals, they would eat each other. So eating pigs or cows isn't considered cannibalism. So technically, they may be omnivorous as humans, but not cannibals. Mainly because ponies in the show have a lot of human characteristics, they are just adapted for equine anatomy.

Yeah I know a pony who has cancer and basically died the next morning and having a funeral for him + his last night wasn't so good because of rainbow hiding under his bed and giving him a shock

Tartrus (hellish place maybe even torture (they put a pg rating for it but clearly it's a kids show however, Tartrus adult version is much more in depth and is much far scary) 5. Elements of harmony (one of the mlp most greatest weapon of all time, sending luna to the moon, turn discord into stone, murdering king sombra (he did scream in pain) Elements of harmony is a weapon a mass destruction weapon. depending on the wielder could have the darkest op magic in history of mlp. twilight killed sombra this means twilight sparkle is the new kira from death note.
Those are rookie numbers. I mean the Elements did legit drain a group of sentient entities until death, simply cause they wanted to corrupt it. Like shit man, plus way more if you pay lots of attention.
Who knew a show with talking unicorns and baby dragons could warrant a top 10 darkest moments. I love how the writers aren't afraid of having more macabre themes, without going too overwhelmingly horrid for the kids.

I still remember being shocked when I first saw the Too Many Pinkies episode. These Pinkie Pie clones/copies are shown to be able to think and speak; and to me, that means there're alive, even if you were to assume their body was composed of ‘magical energy’ or something like that, instead of biology as we know it. (Coincidentally, this also places most version of “vampire” or similar “undead”, firmly in the category of “living”, for me.) Meaning that what Twilight was doing, is highly suspect, morally. And on top of that, I want to point to the reason *why* Twilight needed to use a test to separate the ‘real’ Pinkie from the others. This says to me, that the abominable spell she used to get rid the the excess Pinkies, could have harmed or outright killed the ‘real’ Pinkie if she were hit. And this brings me to the next part… How is the ability to stare at a wall, meant to test for essential ‘Pinkie-ness’? The only answer I can think of, is that it can't. And so, we arrive at the True Horror… Did Twilight unilaterally decide that Pinkie and the extras were identical? Did she come to the conclusion, in that strange, obsessive mind of hers, that the world should only have one Pinkie Pie? Did she set up the “test” as a ruse, to “prove” that she had the right Pinkie in the end, as a bit of theater, while she just outright murders enough copies of her friend, that there is only one left? Did she kill the Pinkie Pie Prime, the original? And how does this reflect on the psychology of the mind that decided on this course of action? Is Pinkie really the “crazy one” of the bunch, or is she outshone by another?
the fake ones didn't understand that not watching the paint dry would result in their death, or them being abandoned by friends. they were basically mature babies, they didn't have any knowledge or friendship. that's why the test was that, bc only the real Pinkie would sit still long enough for her friends and to prove that she was the real one. i don't think Twilight had ill intent.
Hmm… Reading "they didn't have any friendship" sparked an idea. Perhaps there a certain metaphysical rules as part of magic, that Twilight has learned and studied, but which are hidden and not mentioned to the viewer. Or perhaps I haven't made the connection… Is friendship magic? Or rather: Is friendship a specific flavor of magic, with special properties that makes copying it impossible even by such an artifact as the mirror pool? Although, another thought I had, was that Twilight is simply operating with a terribly different understanding of how a mind works. How would the field of psychology differ in a world like hers? I mean, yikes! They actually have, I assume, different, or at least, additional, physical laws. (Not all of which may necessarily be called magic.) How would their presence and study affect psychology? Another thing I just realized, is that I was working under the poor assumption that the copies are lossless clones of Pinkie Pie. Did Twilight use some secret knowledge to help devise the test, by exploiting a flaw in the copies? (I really don't like secret knowledge, when it pertains to what passes for physics.) Maybe that's what you're saying… (Assumptions are so annoyingly sneaky.)
Luna's nightmare in "A Royal Problem" when her teeth fell out. Easily one of the creepiest things I've seen, not only in the show, but in anything animated.
I hit my teeth when I was little and had to remove them to avoid infection. Years later, I am afraid of hitting my teeth and losing them. I've had nightmares about losing my teeth. Trauma or not, that would be terrifying lol
Idk if I'd call that dark though. She was simply sleep deprived and suffering from high anxiety and stress. If anything, it's more creepy/disturbing than dark. Although Pinkie Pie slowly descending into a depressed madness and having hallucinations while losing all her aspects of feeling and being happy toward anything due to the idea that her friend's want nothing to do with her is probably dark material.
We all noticed those things, though. They had that episode Lesson Zero when Twi had a mental breakdown, and party of One where Pinkie had an ABSOLUTE mental breakdown.

Because think about it & I'll use the human race as an example first: everybody knows how the bubonic plague started; it was started from the rats that transferred the disease to the humans but what transferred it the rats? The logical answer here would be fleas...... However, it's never explained in any book how the disease was contracted to the fleas so.......
That is a good theory. A lot of the symptoms and stuff matches Extremely quick- they both acted fast ‘Deadly’- the Bubonic plague was deadly of course, but Swamp fever isn’t really ‘deadly’ in the sense it’s *kills* you kills you Extremely contagious- They both were extremely contagious and infected people fast Probably other things I can’t remember. But nice connection!

Cadance asked them to show them the power of the love in their hearts... what do they do though? They shove the Crystal Empire equivalent to the Celestial Hoof Grenade of Canterlot up his plot and yank out the pin. Those Crystal Empire ponies are FRIGGIN SAVAGE! I actually did a blog about this a couple years ago on my FiMfiction account.
My only guess is tirek he has yellow eyes if not him then it could be grogar a G1 villain who is confirmed to be in season 9 premiere he could have yellow eyes and it could be a foreshadowing

I mean, it's the target demographic. Doesn't mean people outside said demographic can't enjoy it, there's nothing wrong with them doing so. The show has even started catering to other groups of people in the audience as well.
When this show started spewing off in other directions and started to appeal to others rather then staying focused with the intended audience, it honestly lost most of its characteristic charisma, charm and feel. The latter seasons try to be something so much more with new concepts but still have to invite new young viewers without alienated them at the same time.

How exactly could the remnants of Nightmare Moon's magic have corrupted Stygian into the Pony of Shadows if the Pony of Shadows was banished to limbo when Celestia and Luna were still fillies, before Discord took over Equestria? Regarding Garble, he may only have killed Starlight in a fantasy... but he still has genuinely done truly dark things. In Dragon Quest, he made it clear he likes destroying eggs from birds nests for fun, so he is killing creatures regularly and likes doing it. Then there's the time in Gauntlet of Fire, where he was forcing Twilight and Rarity towards the edge of a drop into lava. Sure, Twilight could easily have teleported herself and Rarity away or flown them to safety, but put any Earth Pony in their place and they would be goners. Garble is a psychopathic murderer.
More likely, The Pony of Shadows left a small part of itself in the castle, and THAT contributed to corrupting Luna, and later was the thing being referred to by Granny Smith and AJ.

Okay so in the first one, the figure seen in the castle of the two sisters wasn't the Pony of shadows... he was still trapped in the alternet dimension with the Pillars. And the shadow figure shown had yellow eyes and didn't physically resemble the Pony of shadows at all.
Draconicus the Reaper if I can remember tirek was freed in season two episode 20 it’s about time when twilight was messing with a time travelling spell which create paradox where future twilight tries to warn past twilight of a disaster which she ignorantly didn’t listen to which lead to a series of chain of events one of which caused Cerberus to leave is post giving tirek the opportunity to escape by the end of the episode twilight decided to use the same time travel spell that her future version of her used bring it full circle again as for tirek he was probably hiding out at the old royal sisters castle and was probably trying to avoid getting seen by the mane six when they were searching for clues on the hidden keys that open the friendship chest that would lead to the creation of the friendship castle at the time some of the traps that was set off could have been tirek in order to get rid of them so they won’t discover him and tell any pony of his whereabouts so that he can avoid the info eventually getting to Princess Celestia and Luna ears if they caught wind of him hiding at there old castle they would have took immediate action and apprehended then and there

The fact that all of equestira went into a state of depression and resource shortages over the war with King Sombra in one of Starlight’s other timelines I’d say was pretty dark. It was like world war pony. In fact, IMO, all of the timelines starlight created were pretty dark. Especially the last one we saw where there was literally no life and it was just a barren wasteland.
1:39 - When it comes to the whole Pony of Shadows cliffhanger in the Castle Mane-ia episode, I'm more than certain at the time of its making/airing, the ominous shadow at the end of the episode was more of a foreshadowing towards Tirek at the end of the same season. He has golden eyes that glow with the contrast of the black of his sclera, and when he escaped Tartarus and first started devouring magic, he was seen wearing something hooded; much like what the shadow appears to have, and so forth. The story turned out to be true, though. Hence Stygian, obviously, but it was an entirely separate encounter of someone else when it came to the Season 4 appearance.
Someone did a grim dark that fluttershy figured out the reason why the everfree forest was able to sustain itself. The ponies who were infected turnt to trees and the trees sapped the life force out of them and used their magic to create the everfree

The 28 pranks later episode gave me nightmares for days! Since its a "homage" (don't know if I can call a homage) my mind got the episode too damn close to the movie and it was terrifying. Another moment that I found truly horror is *Cozy Glow* The show talked about friends and power and blablabla... She's a completely psychopath: manipulating ponies, calculating her goals and strategies, tactical approach (that key of unfathered entrance was a tactical decision. The cataloging of the relics was a tactical move. She knows her stuff)... She made every bit of calculation and strategy for her goals, which *almost* came true. Glad ponies are not simple minded and have critical thinking. Showing a bit of this kind of behavior in a sweet cartoon for me was hell. If I had kids and the asked me about this character... How do you explain to a child that there are people who will use you, manipulate you even blackmail you, or worse, to attain their goals?!

I stopped watching this show nine years ago but I'd consider the scene where one of the crystal ponies experiences a flashback of when they were enslaved to be rather dark.
That wasn’t The Pony of shadows at the end of castle mania. It was Tirek. As Tirek has Yellow eyes, and Also was the villain of season 4. Also The pony of shadows was in Tartarus, and he had white eyes.
The show staff confirmed “hotdog” means “veggie dog” in Equestria. Also, the sheep represent “NEETs” (to use a Japanese term), while bovines represent people who are mentally handicapped but still productive citizens. That’s my best guess, anyway. EDIT: also, real horses are omnivores. Don’t believe me? Watch the video of the horse that eats a chicken. Or look up the historical accounts of horses going insane and eating people. Some mules eat small animals that annoy them, such as yappy dogs.
Also still think it's really messed up that it's heavily implied Scootaloo has a rough home life, I know it's been covered before but then when you realise her wings are messed up, it kinda shadows things like drugs in pregnancy or abuse. Kiiiind of dark there.

That first thing isnt true. Luna turned to nightmare moon much after the stygian turned into shadow pony. Celestia even said that she and luna were just little fillys when the pillars were there before getting stuck between the worlds
Honestly a lot of the alternate timelines in the season 6 finale freaked me out. In the first one, we see a really creepy Ponyville, Sweet Apple Acres has been converted into a polluting factory, Sugarcube Corner is now BREAD Corner, and, probably the most terrifying of all, RAINBOW DASH IS MISSING PART OF HER EAR! Plus, in one timeline, there's just nothing there. There's literally just darkness and all of the mane six are probably dead!
I mean, the thing that made the swamp fever so frightening for me is that I thought there wasn’t a recorded cure. I had this theory the entire episode that Mage and her mom grew ill and became trees, this definitely could’ve been an alternative storyline if not for season 7’s ending plot.
dude the Pony of Shadows was Banished BEFORE Nightmare Moon was.... Luna states they never met the other pillars and were to young to understand the danger they faced. If Anything the some of the power or whatever of the Shadow that turned Stigdian (probably spelled wrong) infected Luna, not the over way around.
What about King Sombra's "defeat?" The crystal Empire part two sorta shows him physically decimated. It goes by very quickly but you can pause it and see some of himself scattered apart, But it's mainly his clothing. Or the mane six that melt in the tree of harmony (That scene was so disturbing it had to be censored, but they didn't censor much)

That entire episode felt like the last of us in concept. You get infected and then turn into the plant that infects others
I still remember being shocked when I first saw the Too Many Pinkies episode. These Pinkie Pie clones/copies are shown to be able to think and speak; and to me, that means there're alive, even if you were to assume their body was composed of ‘magical energy’ or something like that, instead of biology as we know it. (Coincidentally, this also places most version of “vampire” or similar “undead”, firmly in the category of “living”, for me.) Meaning that what Twilight was doing, is highly suspect, morally. And on top of that, I want to point to the reason *why* Twilight needed to use a test to separate the ‘real’ Pinkie from the others. This says to me, that the abominable spell she used to get rid the the excess Pinkies, could have harmed or outright killed the ‘real’ Pinkie if she were hit. And this brings me to the next part… How is the ability to stare at a wall, meant to test for essential ‘Pinkie-ness’? The only answer I can think of, is that it can't.
And so, we arrive at the True Horror… Did Twilight unilaterally decide that Pinkie and the extras were identical? Did she come to the conclusion, in that strange, obsessive mind of hers, that the world should only have one Pinkie Pie? Did she set up the “test” as a ruse, to “prove” that she had the right Pinkie in the end, as a bit of theater, while she just outright murders enough copies of her friend, that there is only one left? Did she kill the Pinkie Pie Prime, the original? And how does this reflect on the psychology of the mind that decided on this course of action?
Is Pinkie really the “crazy one” of the bunch, or is she outshone by another?
the fake ones didn't understand that not watching the paint dry would result in their death, or them being abandoned by friends. they were basically mature babies, they didn't have any knowledge or friendship. that's why the test was that, bc only the real Pinkie would sit still long enough for her friends and to prove that she was the real one. i don't think Twilight had ill intent.
Hmm… Reading "they didn't have any friendship" sparked an idea.
Perhaps there a certain metaphysical rules as part of magic, that Twilight has learned and studied, but which are hidden and not mentioned to the viewer. Or perhaps I haven't made the connection… Is friendship magic? Or rather: Is friendship a specific flavor of magic, with special properties that makes copying it impossible even by such an artifact as the mirror pool?
Although, another thought I had, was that Twilight is simply operating with a terribly different understanding of how a mind works. How would the field of psychology differ in a world like hers? I mean, yikes! They actually have, I assume, different, or at least, additional, physical laws. (Not all of which may necessarily be called magic.) How would their presence and study affect psychology?
Another thing I just realized, is that I was working under the poor assumption that the copies are lossless clones of Pinkie Pie. Did Twilight use some secret knowledge to help devise the test, by exploiting a flaw in the copies? (I really don't like secret knowledge, when it pertains to what passes for physics.) Maybe that's what you're saying… (Assumptions are so annoyingly sneaky.)

We all noticed those things, though. They had that episode Lesson Zero when Twi had a mental breakdown, and party of One where Pinkie had an ABSOLUTE mental breakdown.

I mean, it's the target demographic. Doesn't mean people outside said demographic can't enjoy it, there's nothing wrong with them doing so. The show has even started catering to other groups of people in the audience as well.
When this show started spewing off in other directions and started to appeal to others rather then staying focused with the intended audience, it honestly lost most of its characteristic charisma, charm and feel. The latter seasons try to be something so much more with new concepts but still have to invite new young viewers without alienated them at the same time.

How exactly could the remnants of Nightmare Moon's magic have corrupted Stygian into the Pony of Shadows if the Pony of Shadows was banished to limbo when Celestia and Luna were still fillies, before Discord took over Equestria?
Regarding Garble, he may only have killed Starlight in a fantasy... but he still has genuinely done truly dark things. In Dragon Quest, he made it clear he likes destroying eggs from birds nests for fun, so he is killing creatures regularly and likes doing it.
Then there's the time in Gauntlet of Fire, where he was forcing Twilight and Rarity towards the edge of a drop into lava. Sure, Twilight could easily have teleported herself and Rarity away or flown them to safety, but put any Earth Pony in their place and they would be goners.
Garble is a psychopathic murderer.
More likely, The Pony of Shadows left a small part of itself in the castle, and THAT contributed to corrupting Luna, and later was the thing being referred to by Granny Smith and AJ.
There's time travel spells in the show, so it's possible.

Draconicus the Reaper if I can remember tirek was freed in season two episode 20 it’s about time when twilight was messing with a time travelling spell which create paradox where future twilight tries to warn past twilight of a disaster which she ignorantly didn’t listen to which lead to a series of chain of events one of which caused Cerberus to leave is post giving tirek the opportunity to escape by the end of the episode twilight decided to use the same time travel spell that her future version of her used bring it full circle again as for tirek he was probably hiding out at the old royal sisters castle and was probably trying to avoid getting seen by the mane six when they were searching for clues on the hidden keys that open the friendship chest that would lead to the creation of the friendship castle at the time some of the traps that was set off could have been tirek in order to get rid of them so they won’t discover him and tell any pony of his whereabouts so that he can avoid the info eventually getting to Princess Celestia and Luna ears if they caught wind of him hiding at there old castle they would have took immediate action and apprehended then and there

The fact that all of equestira went into a state of depression and resource shortages over the war with King Sombra in one of Starlight’s other timelines I’d say was pretty dark. It was like world war pony. In fact, IMO, all of the timelines starlight created were pretty dark. Especially the last one we saw where there was literally no life and it was just a barren wasteland.
1:39 - When it comes to the whole Pony of Shadows cliffhanger in the Castle Mane-ia episode, I'm more than certain at the time of its making/airing, the ominous shadow at the end of the episode was more of a foreshadowing towards Tirek at the end of the same season. He has golden eyes that glow with the contrast of the black of his sclera, and when he escaped Tartarus and first started devouring magic, he was seen wearing something hooded; much like what the shadow appears to have, and so forth. The story turned out to be true, though. Hence Stygian, obviously, but it was an entirely separate encounter of someone else when it came to the Season 4 appearance.

The "Grogar" in season 9 was actually discord, who was impersonating Grogar for this idiotic reason: boosting Twilight's confidence when she'll be declared the new ruler of Equestria.
The 28 pranks later episode gave me nightmares for days! Since its a "homage" (don't know if I can call a homage) my mind got the episode too damn close to the movie and it was terrifying.
Another moment that I found truly horror is *Cozy Glow*
The show talked about friends and power and blablabla... She's a completely psychopath: manipulating ponies, calculating her goals and strategies, tactical approach (that key of unfathered entrance was a tactical decision. The cataloging of the relics was a tactical move. She knows her stuff)... She made every bit of calculation and strategy for her goals, which *almost* came true. Glad ponies are not simple minded and have critical thinking. Showing a bit of this kind of behavior in a sweet cartoon for me was hell. If I had kids and the asked me about this character... How do you explain to a child that there are people who will use you, manipulate you even blackmail you, or worse, to attain their goals?!

How does the show know I never dream or never get nightmares while I sleep?

That first thing isnt true. Luna turned to nightmare moon much after the stygian turned into shadow pony. Celestia even said that she and luna were just little fillys when the pillars were there before getting stuck between the worlds
Moments like these are why I love this show.
Honestly a lot of the alternate timelines in the season 6 finale freaked me out. In the first one, we see a really creepy Ponyville, Sweet Apple Acres has been converted into a polluting factory, Sugarcube Corner is now BREAD Corner, and, probably the most terrifying of all, RAINBOW DASH IS MISSING PART OF HER EAR! Plus, in one timeline, there's just nothing there. There's literally just darkness and all of the mane six are probably dead!
I mean, the thing that made the swamp fever so frightening for me is that I thought there wasn’t a recorded cure. I had this theory the entire episode that Mage and her mom grew ill and became trees, this definitely could’ve been an alternative storyline if not for season 7’s ending plot.
dude the Pony of Shadows was Banished BEFORE Nightmare Moon was.... Luna states they never met the other pillars and were to young to understand the danger they faced.
If Anything the some of the power or whatever of the Shadow that turned Stigdian (probably spelled wrong)
infected Luna, not the over way around.
What about King Sombra's "defeat?"
The crystal Empire part two sorta shows him physically decimated.
It goes by very quickly but you can pause it and see some of himself scattered apart, But it's mainly his clothing.
Or the mane six that melt in the tree of harmony
(That scene was so disturbing it had to be censored, but they didn't censor much)

~ Fluttershy locking herself in her house
~ Sweetie Belle imagining Rarity's future
~ The Storm King being shattered
