I've been on the other receiving end of the frozen coal, pounding on feeders and coal pipes to get it flowing to the pulverizers to be burned. This is the first winter I can remember that so far no frozen coal.
One guy put his can of soup for lunch at the edge, and didn't open the lid any, about 20 minutes before lunch,as we were walking back for lunch, it blew like a stick of dynamite! 😂🤣😂🤣 ham n beans everywhere! We all shared our lunch with him.
The cold weather really fought you that week, even Freddie was complaining! The cold really makes everything more difficult, can't wait 'till Spring! Thank you for sharing Dave!
Your right about that Raymond, but we got to try and keep coal moving to keep the electricity going to keep homes warm and lit up, oh yea I forgot, gotta keep those EV's charged up too.... LOL Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again. Warmer weather is coming.
To cold for the coal and to cold to be working...burrrrr...thanks for sharing...I know what it's like..as a young man was stationed in Carbiou Maine...guarding B52's and KC 135"s refuelers...standing in the cold...ouch.
Your right about that Craig, but we got to try and keep coal moving to keep the electricity going to keep homes warm and lit up, oh yea I forgot, gotta keep those EV's charged up too.... LOL Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Another day on the railroad. Most people don't know what a typical day is like out there, especially in the bitter cold. I think we are all looking forward to Spring. Thanks again and stay safe and warm Dave.
Your right about that Rob, we got to try and keep coal moving to keep the electricity going to keep homes warm and lit up, oh yea I forgot, gotta keep those EV's charged up too.... LOL Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again. Warmer days are coming.
Dave you had better stoke up the air tight or Freddy will take it out on you when you try to sleep! he is quite particular about the temperature in the house! he has delicate whiskers that hate the cold, especially when it is inside the house where it should be warm!
Tell me about it Barry. He sure let me know when I got home how displeased he was. And Saturday Corrie came over and sat down on his warm blanket that's on the bench in front of the fire place. Freddy was not at all pleased about that and gave Corrie a mean look and the tail. Will be a video on the following week. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
You sure had a hard week, so cold there. Have to take care not to get frostbite, my workmate did one year when out clearing switches. 1976 was a bad winter here too Loads of snow for a few weeks, we don't get winters like that anymore. I know how Freddie feels I don't have central heating and my house gets real cold, got my heaters on now and it is warming up nicely. Take care when it's icy and Have a Good Day everyone.
Yes it was frigid Cedarcam, but we got to try and keep coal moving to keep the electricity going to keep homes warm and lit up, oh yea I forgot, gotta keep those EV's charged up too.... LOL And to top off Freddy's week, Corrie came over and sat down on his favorite blanket right in front of the fire place. Freddy was pretty upset about that! Video coming the following week on that one. They aren't speaking now. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.

Over in Mt Union, the East Broad Top had a chance floatation washer... and a standard gauge tank car of waste oil that got sprayed on the coal (when put into standard gauge hoppers for the Pennsy.) -- I shiver to think about the issues on the top of the mountain that the miners and railroad ran into.
Back then getting frozen coal out of the cars had to be a nightmare. Now most long haul coal cars go thru a big shed with radiant heat that warms the sides of the cars before dumping Billblom. I cannot imagine the electric bill for those, some sheds accommodate two cars at a time. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
@@ThatsDavesOtherDoings The ability to get the cars to dump was about 1/2 of the reason for the oil.. The other? Apparently dust was a problem with some of their grades of coal, so the oil was used year round on hoppers of fine coal apparently. Kept it from blowing out...
Your right about that Jon, but we got to try and keep coal moving to keep the electricity going to keep homes warm and lit up, oh yea I forgot, gotta keep those EV's charged up too.... LOL Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Hello Dave yes cold week 🥶 it won’t last 👍🏻😎. Love the cat I have a cat pure white Casper his Name they sure have a sense of humour .Great video 👍🏻😎Be safe . Robin out
Nope warmer weather is coming Robin and can't get here fast enough! Freddy says Meow to his new friend Casper. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
THAT is a LOT of work Dave!! If you ever need any help - I am no more that 8 hours away and would be happy to help!! I'm I.B.E.W. Local #3 (NYC!), so we should be able to find some electrical around there, no??😄 Edit: Oh, and I'm retired recently, so I'd be happy to provide support, if nothing else. I'm just so proud of your company AND the snow (SERIOUSLY}.😊👍
Hi Dave, air cleaner may have iced up from the powder snow being sucked into it. If not dusty take air filter out and run it. It's like a snowblower, they have no air filter for that reason. Running in a clean environment. On real cold days you may need to leave chock part on to richen mixture. If you can adjust carb you might open high speed adjustment to richen mixture for very cold weather. Stay safe and keep Freddy warm
Dave my name is John i use to work for a rail road company we used to use backpack blowers to clean out our customers switches skill are the pack packs we used to use worked really good especially if you get two of you to doing it it really moves a lot of snow
I didn't want to be out in it either Tom, but we got to try and keep coal moving to keep the electricity going to keep homes warm and lit up, oh yea I forgot, gotta keep those EV's charged up too.... LOL Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Dave. After all that week, with unloading a lot of the cars beating them with a sludge hammer, you guys must have a good massage after all that. Soon, that will be all over in a couple or so months. When you said when the temperature got to 3 degrees, that means get the shorts out, palm tree, and lounge a round with your favorite drink....😂 If those cars could speak, they probably would be yelling. Stop it, hurts...😅 You guys have a great week and be safe. Robert
Your right about the cars Robert, and imagine what the couplers would be saying! Warmer weather is coming. But when it's frigid out we got to try and keep coal moving to keep the electricity going to keep homes warm and lit up, oh yea I forgot, gotta keep those EV's charged up too.... LOL Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Cold weather is tough! Hated working in the cold weather on night shift at one of the largest sawmills in the country. We used tanner gas in the air systems but they would freeze and slow down everything that ran off air pressure! Air cylinders log kickers and kick outs!
Take care of Freddy dont let him get cold. He is the king. Keep that cold air up there. It is time for a warm up. It will be in the low 70's by the mid week here in Alabama.
Wonerful wonerful wonerful. Reminds me of Ed Sullivan back in my youth. Glad I live in balmy central Texas where it is 47 degrees right now. I think we are both about the same age. I turned 70 last summer. Thoroughly enjoy watching your videos. 👍
Glad you are enjoying the home movies Jacob. it was a frigid week but is starting to warm up thankfully. Ran trains today no problems at all, a welcome sight to see. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Nice video Dave, mother nature is unpredictable at times, there is a hidden feature on Stihl's it's called Winter mode, less than a minute to change it over. Poor Freddy doesn't like the cold - he is spoiled for sure. Cheers and stay safe
Me too Gary, but we got to try and keep coal moving to keep the electricity going to keep homes warm and lit up, oh yea I forgot, gotta keep those EV's charged up too.... LOL Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Got beet juice in some of my tractor tires here at home, it doesn't freeze Asphalt Jungle. Never heard of spraying it on dump bodies. Guys who haul asphalt here spray their beds with diesel fuel in the summer to keep the asphalt from sticking to the beds. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Boyne City Rail Road out of business tracks pulled up, shortline 7 miles long but connected to Penn central at one end. They used propylene glycol mobile home anti freeze, on the switches,(safe for humans and animals biodegradable) I saw the results and asked what they were using they told me it has a pleasant pink color on the snow, in really cold weather like ambient 30 below zero wind chill of 90 below they added heat, and when it was too cold for people drop some fire snake and only go out when necessary. Yeah some of the guys there had missing fingers because of the cold(non union). You are blessed with a really good employer.
Your right about that Roberta, I am lucky can get in and get warm when needed. They used to get me a spray that they used on the conveyor belts to keep coal from sliding on frozen belts, it was really good stuff and I sprayed the switches with it. It even melted the ice. But they don't get it anymore. And yes I've used Fire Snake on frozen switches in the past also. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Problem is the prep plant had some birds down and the coal wasn't getting dried enough, moisture content was 7%. They wash the coal to clean it at the plant then run it thru what are called birds which are big round things that spin the coal and help to get rid of the water. Like a big clothes dryer sort of. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Looked like some pretty cold days to be out there, luckily you could keep warm swinging that sledge. Hopefully it isn't going to be like that all through the winter.
Your right about that Ed, but we got to try and keep coal moving to keep the electricity going to keep homes warm and lit up, oh yea I forgot, gotta keep those EV's charged up too.... LOL It's gonna get warmer soon thankfully. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
@@ThatsDavesOtherDoings We don't get much of a winter here, it usually is just under or above freezing temp here. Still not great if you have a day of rain followed by some frost but we get by, bit tricky to get in the car though 😁
I would like to see that myk55501! We considered getting a shaker/vibrator that set down on top of the car a few years ago, but that idea fell by the way side. Too much money they said, cheaper to buy Dave a sledge hammer ..... :-) Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Your right about that Michael, warmer weather is coming. But, during the frigid times we got to try and keep coal moving to keep the electricity going to keep homes warm and lit up, oh yea I forgot, gotta keep those EV's charged up too.... LOL Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Big problems here Mack, trouble in paradise. Corrie came over and sat down on Freddy's warm blanket in front of the fire place. Freddy gave her "the look" and the tail. Now they aren't speaking. Professional counseling for them may be next? Video on that the following week. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
I remember a few times we were in the middle of fields up on raised track,so cold we would take turns taking breaks by little railroad tie fires to stay warm.
DACE WEATHERMEN SAYING ITS BEEN 10 YRS SINCE IT WAS THIS COLD...I DIDNT MISS IT alsoU MENTIONED 75 OR 76 GRSDUATED HS IN 77 THOSE PREVIOUS WINTERS WERE JUST BRUTAL
Love the videos, Dave I think you’re doing a great job with the videos your patience and explaining things is great fantastic! I’m curious whether or not you ever thought about getting a drone to fly over top because I’d really like to see kind of like a map in relation to where everything is from the mind to where you have the silo or whatever you store the call in until it gets patched over to a ship or trucks But I’m trying to picture the lay of the land… I was just curious if maybe you have thought about a drone…. I think it’s a bit too cold as of late however, again I would like to see the lay of the land if you know what I’m saying. Thank you for everything. You’re doing a great job. !
Really glad you are enjoying the home movies David. Guess what Mrs. Santa got me for Christmas this year! it's been way too cold to go out and try it, so when it warms up gonna learn how to use it. I do have 4 videos on my CCRX 6700 channel of a complete track ride from the mine to harbor, but it doesn't show much of anything about the surroundings around the track like you are asking to see. Give me some time to learn how to fly it and hope the government doesn't shoot it down while I'm learning.... :-) Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
@ thank you for the quick reply. That’s amazing. Perhaps you should change the title of this channel. That’s Dave’s other doings to Dave’s amazing doings…. I am a steam fitter and actually worked on old steam locomotives years ago. I am in my 60s now, but I typically worked on STEAM boilers for process and for HEATING but I did get an opportunity to help rebuild a steam locomotive in a town outside of Toronto called Brighton, which was quite an experience in itself. With regards to the drones, I used them for work years ago when boilers required chimneys now it’s all power vented basically going through the wall horizontally rather than up through the roof vertically, but anyhow to inspect the chimneys years ago, we would have to set up a louder, climb up, flashlight, etc. But now whenever we have those projects we use the drone. It doesn’t take much to get used to what I did though was I bought a cheap one to get a handle on it. I think it was $200 and I trashed that thing countless times and it continue to run which was great But once I felt confident with that, then I brought out the good DJI drone. I still managed to have a crash, however minor repairs fixed it. But yes, as I mentioned in my earlier comment it’s far too chilly out. We actually had those temperatures in Toronto last week. We go by Celsius as opposed to Fahrenheit, however, in my business, we still do Fahrenheit, for example hot water heating boiler runs at 160 Fahrenheit But yet a normal indoor temperature would be 22°C or 68 to 70°F but yes, it was quite chilly here last week. It was -25 Celsius with the windchill, which I believe is around -11 Fahrenheit…. We are much further south in Toronto than Wisconsin Minnesota the Dakota’s, etc. just up from Buffalo. In fact we’re about an hour away from Buffalo. Mr. Trump doesn’t like us much in Canada anymore, but that’s another story…. It used to be so much colder when I was a kid back in the 70s. It got cold in October/November and it stayed cold in Toronto until April. But now we’ll get a cold snap for a week or two and then it’ll go up to +9 Celsius or I believe 45°F maybe a couple degrees warmer than 45
Part of our pitiful snow is just hanging around for spring, looks like. Thanks, keep swinging and tell Freddie he'll just have to get used to it. The paper plant had a vibrator that'd be let down on the cars and knock the froze stuff out but it's all gone now.
Yes it is and your right not hard to tell where coal is spilling, in fact from the mine to harbor it looks like someone took a cinder truck down the track and spread cinders along side it..... sigh Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Your welcome The Hoarding Hermit. it was frigid, but we got to try and keep coal moving to keep the electricity going to keep homes warm and lit up, oh yea I forgot, gotta keep those EV's charged up too.... LOL Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
I've done that before in the past then used a switch broom before they got me the leaf blower., but even now if the snow gets too deep have to shovel it first anyway Juan Juan. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
It is raining here finally and it is snowing in the mountains here we need it but you look like you and Freddie are over winter. Be safe my friend and keep the videos coming.
They say rain is coming later this week here Mike, a welcome sight to get rid of this snow and it is warming up some. 15 and above and trains ran good today with no problems thankfully. It was an easy day. Nice! Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Long time viewer. First time poster. Question: does beating the sides of those aluminum cars with sledge hammers cause wear and damage down the road? Why not use rubber or wooden mallets?
Yes it does Robert, it weakens the aluminum sides and doors as you can imagine. Last year they did get us big rubber sledges and that made a big difference in not having the dents on the car sides, but guess what? Those rubber sledges grew legs and they didn't get anymore. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
You need one of those flat cars with a jet engine and a kerosene tank on it , for melting snow. It melts snow in a snap and icy switches too. CSX has one near the purina dog chow .factory .Find Wide World of Trains and he's got videos of it in action.Or just key in jet engine snow melter
Those things are the cat's meow and most large classification yards across the country have them, they do quick work. My buddy works with Hulcher told me they go to Chicago yards every winter and after those heaters melt the snow and ice, Hulcher goes behind with their vac truck sucking up the water.
Moisture content in the coal is up Lewis and it gave us fits, but we got to try and keep coal moving to keep the electricity going to keep homes warm and lit up, oh yea I forgot, gotta keep those EV's charged up too.... LOL Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Well Dave, it's just after midday here and already 89 degrees heading for a top of 104! What a contrast. So many different issues for you to deal with but it looks like your making it happen! Looking forward to seeing the new regulator in action too. Keep those hammers swinging my friend and stay safe out there.
3°! It make me cold just watching you work in that weather! I agree with Freddy on this one. When it drops below 60 i start freezing! A couple of years ago i bought a heated vest that runs on a jump pack i where when it get anywhere near cold enough to snow. I'd be curled up in front of the first with Freddy till June!
I've done that for many years, shovel and switch broom before they got me the leaf blower Victor. I like the leaf blower a lot better. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Thank you for this video! A bit too cold for comfort. Warm air ducted into the cars could prevent freezing, but warm moist engine exhaust won't do. Glad you weathered the cold spell!
The mine ought to get you a more powerful backpack blower for blowing the snow. But in my opinion the propane torch is also quite effective for melting the snow out. 😊
That would sure be nice George, many railroads do have those back pack blowers, I am not so lucky. They sure are nice, you are right about that. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Hi Dave 👋, I guess you can call that the Temperature Tail 🌡. When meow, meow, meow starts, then that's an indication your in trouble 🐈. Baby bobcat 👶 is sleeping under his tarp. There's room for Freddie. Back from Colorado too frozen water 💧 pipe. Unthawed now but cracked water meter. Now bypassed. End of winter dents in the cars will tell the story. Stay warm my friend friend. Richard Bause
Freddy was pretty upset, then Corrie came over and sat on Freddy's favorite blanket in front of the fire place, he really got upset about that and gave her the tail, now they are not speaking. Trouble in paradise. May have to send those two for counseling? Perhaps Baby Bobcat can hang out his shingle? awesome pics you sent me, thanks. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
I wouldn't want to be even outside in those kind of temperatures not to mention swinging a rubber sledge beating the coal out of cars! I couldn't survive. Coldest I have experienced here in the Dallas area was -2 back in 2021. Needless to say we're not equipped for that, lol.
Your right about that Shane, but we got to try and keep coal moving to keep the electricity going to keep homes warm and lit up, oh yea I forgot, gotta keep those EV's charged up too.... LOL Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
That's why I love having an exhaust heater in the dump boxes on the haulers at the mine. Unfortunately I can't see how that could be done on the train cars. -40 and everything is running but it breaks so easy. On another note, I noticed there was a lot of coal dust when you are dumping. Any concerns on that affecting health? Thanks for the videos
Way back when they ran a good many lumps I did do that CCscott. Fire place now doesn't have a grate and this coal is pretty fine, so it wouldn't be like burning lump coal. There used to be coal yards all over the place that sold house coal, but those are a thing of the past now. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Many railroads have propane switch heaters, just turn them on and they keep the switches thawed out Robert. We can't afford to do that here, cheaper to pay Dave to thaw them out manually. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
We're in tall cotton so far this week, much warmer, 15 and above Eric. Trains ran good today with no problems, a welcome thing to happen. Easy day thankfully. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Most of the switches they have use propane switch heaters which are permanently in place on each switch, just throw a switch and the propane starts heating. Some have a pipe that carries the propane along the switch points and when lit burns similar to a pilot light on a gas stove Physics Phirst.
Hi dave i know its an investment but i am wondering whats iron sinergys thoughts on your own vack truck for spills cleaning of wet spots and snow clearing
They actually considered getting their own vac truck last year, mainly for all the spills at the prep plant Craig. They didn't do it tho. Hi rail vac trucks are amazing but they are an electrical nightmare to work on when something goes wrong. For all the coal spillage we've got on the entire track I've suggested them looking into a vacuum train, but that will never happen, so my ballast just keeps on getting more and more plugged up. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Hmmm, never gave that a thought, it just might work. On main line switches it would have to be removed several times a day to get trains thru. But sure thing will happen, I put a tarp down over a yard switch and when they want to run on that track, will forget it's there and tear it all up, or else I will get a good cussing cause they have to remove it first.... LOL Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
It's called side release agent Jeff. I do not know who our supplier is and what they specifically call it other than side release agent. That is 50% propylene glycol, 45% water and 5% dyes and additives. The material safety data sheet on it I have just says side release agent. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Side release agent is 50% propylene glycol, 45% water and 5% dyes and additives according to the material safety data sheet Yukon. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Interesting, never thought of that. Many of the hunters here have those and they say it works very well Eric. Fortunately it's gonna warm up here real soon. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
I to use non ethanol gas but on my older generators I add a lead additive. But I guess I’m about due to get new equipment that will run on that e stuff. Try a heavy air hammer and see if you can get any use out of it. Instead of a sledgehammer ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️ Or a jackhammer 🥰 Electric. Not air or batteries 🪫
12:00 poor homeless kitties😢 You should build a cardboard box wrapped in garage bags with Styrofoam inside so they have a place to stay warm They sell a cat house that has electric heat, but I see a lot of cat videos from Japan and they build cardboard boxes for them for the winter. They do TNR to have them get fixed and have their shots. I feel bad for the abandoned cats
Those kitties here are feral, you can't get near them, although the guys do put our feed for them every day ocsrc. They go in the sheds, there's a small hole in the door they can get in to get out of the wind. My son has an outside cat here at home and he has a nice plastic box for the kitty with a heating pad inside. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Looks like we need to add the Binford Scorched Earth 9000 - flame thrower to the shopping list as well. Binfords most powerful flame thrower is capable of 10.5 million degrees with a flame duration of nearly a half hour before needing refueling and a flame distance of up to a quarter mile... The Binford 9000 can thaw a frozen Niagara Falls in just 4.9 seconds and create an ecological disaster in just 1.5 seconds flat... On that battery that went dead; I always go to Walmart and get the best battery I can with the longest warrantee. Walmart changed the warrantee because it was so good, people were taking advantage of it too much. In any case, if you get a battery at a battery shop, and have a problem, when you take it back you are likely to get argued with. Wal mart doesn't ask questions. You walk out with a new battery just like that. I always attach my paperwork for the battery to the battery itself. They give you a packing pouch to do just that. AND whenever I replace a battery, I always test the altercator. While it might be charging, and hasn't conked out, it could be overcharging and an overcharging altercator will slowly degrade a battery and then one cold morning you go to start your car and zip, nothing. There are lots of videos on how to check for an overcharging altercator. My honda has an overcharging altercator and I plan on replacing that soon. Ive already gone through 3 batteries over the past couple years. Also make sure the battery is always clean. I use battery terminal spray to coat the leads (after cleaning or upon replacing) so they are protected from corrosion. And I always toss a little baking soda onto the battery tray when the battery is out of the vee-hickle. Another good thing to do is, if you have the correct size wrenches and you know it's going to be cold, battery killing cold, remove the battery and bring it inside. I've done that more than a few times. And check your battery cables. If you see corrosion in the battery wires going into the plastic sleeve, you need new cables. That will kill a battery as well and even if the battery is fully charged, bad cables will eventually prevent you from starting your vee-hickle. 👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣👣
Thanks for the tip on the battery David. I never gave Walmart a thought. She went to the garage that side swiped her doors (they put new doors on in a matter of days for her). They put a new battery in. About a month ago i cleaned her terminals and put some really good stuff I use on all my equipment to keep the terminals free of corrosion. I wish you had written in before she went, but will tell her next time she goes to the garage to have them check her alternator output. Good point. I did talk with our environmental department about the Binford 9000. They were worried I'd set all the bridges on fire...... But one can always use More Power! Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
I hate when it gets that cold. You quickly find all of the things that were on the verge of braking. The record cold temp here was -55℉, but almost every year we see -40℉! 🧊🧊🥶🥶🧊🧊We used to winter camp in this stuff, but those days are long gone 😉
I've been on the other receiving end of the frozen coal, pounding on feeders and coal pipes to get it flowing to the pulverizers to be burned. This is the first winter I can remember that so far no frozen coal.

@@ThatsDavesOtherDoings Your right don't forget the EV's (LOL)
Everything is now water based great video thanks Dave
If you are referring to the side release agent Gary, it's 50% propylene glycol, 45% water and 5% dyes and additives.
Now most long haul coal cars go thru a big shed with radiant heat
that warms the sides of the cars before dumping Billblom. I
cannot imagine the electric bill for those, some sheds accommodate two cars at a time.
Cold weather makes everything much more difficult. 24 deg feels pretty nice after a sub zero stretch. The coldest I've seen this winter was -16.
Your right about that Jon, but we got to try and keep coal moving to keep the electricity going to keep homes warm and lit up, oh
yea I forgot, gotta keep those EV's charged up too.... LOL Really

Hello Dave yes cold week 🥶 it won’t last 👍🏻😎. Love the cat I have a cat pure white Casper his Name they sure have a sense of humour .Great video 👍🏻😎Be safe . Robin out

At age 65 I wouldn’t want to be working out in those temps, we do what we have to

Hey Dave
God bless
Stay warm
My friend
Thank you Clark. Warmer weather is coming. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Typical issues during the winter once again. Cool video and have a great upcoming Tuesday Dave.(Steve)
Cold weather railroading you know it very well Steve. Really

That sure doesn't look like to much fun Dave. At least you kept the mine going with your hard work during that deep freeze.
Ran trains today no problems

Nice video Dave, mother nature is unpredictable at times, there is a hidden feature on Stihl's it's called Winter mode, less than a minute to change it over. Poor Freddy doesn't like the cold - he is spoiled for sure. Cheers and stay safe

I spray beet juice in my trailer when hauling rock coker or coal in cold weather
Got beet juice in some of my tractor tires here at home, it doesn't
freeze Asphalt Jungle. Never heard of spraying it on dump bodies.
Guys who haul asphalt here spray their beds with diesel fuel in
the summer to keep the asphalt from sticking to the beds.

Your right about that Roberta, I am lucky can get in and get warm
when needed. They used to get me a spray that they used on the
conveyor belts to keep coal from sliding on frozen belts, it was
really good stuff and I sprayed the switches with it. It even
melted the ice. But they don't get it anymore. And yes I've used
Fire Snake on frozen switches in the past also. Really
appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until

Kinda humorous that the coal that warms you was all frozen up.
Problem is the prep plant had some birds down and the coal wasn't
getting dried enough, moisture content was 7%. They wash the
coal to clean it at the plant then run it thru what are called birds
which are big round things that spin the coal and help to get
rid of the water. Like a big clothes dryer sort of. Really

I think you’re doing a great job with the videos your patience and explaining things is great fantastic!
Guess what
Mrs. Santa got me for Christmas this year! it's been way too cold
to go out and try it, so when it warms up gonna learn how to use it.
I do have 4 videos on my CCRX 6700 channel of a complete
track ride from the mine to harbor, but it doesn't show much
of anything about the surroundings around the track like you
are asking to see. Give me some time to learn how to fly it
and hope the government doesn't shoot it down while I'm
learning....
I still managed to have a crash, however minor repairs fixed
it.
Is that coal particulate I see sprinkled on the white snow? That tells you how much is lost even on a properly functioning hopper car.
Yes it is and your right not hard to tell where coal is spilling, in
fact from the mine to harbor it looks like someone took a cinder
truck down the track and spread cinders along side it..... sigh
Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.

Long time viewer. First time poster. Question: does beating the sides of those aluminum cars with sledge hammers cause wear and damage down the road? Why not use rubber or wooden mallets?
Yes it does Robert, it weakens the aluminum sides and doors
as you can imagine. Last year they did get us big rubber sledges
and that made a big difference in not having the dents on the
car sides, but guess what? Those rubber sledges grew legs
and they didn't get anymore.
Those things are the cat's meow and most large classification
yards across the country have them, they do quick work. My
buddy works with Hulcher told me they go to Chicago yards
every winter and after those heaters melt the snow and ice,
Hulcher goes behind with their vac truck sucking up the water.
I never realized what effect the cold weather has on off loading the cars. I hope it warms up soon for you Dave. Happy rails to you my friend.

wow thats some cold weather your so dependable i hope they appreciate you
It looks like what you need is a gigantic spray can of Rain-X for those coal cars. Gotta love winter!!!😊😊😊
Could do it the old fashioned way , with a switch broom !😊
I've done that for many years, shovel and switch broom before
they got me the leaf blower Victor. I like the leaf blower a lot
better. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Thank you for this video!
A bit too cold for comfort. Warm air ducted into the cars could prevent freezing, but warm moist engine exhaust won't do. Glad you weathered the cold spell!
Hello Dave, I wonder if you have planned a date to retire? I'm sure there would a wonderful celebration of your service!😊❤👍
The mine ought to get you a more powerful backpack blower for blowing the snow. But in my opinion the propane torch is also quite effective for melting the snow out. 😊
That would sure be nice George, many railroads do have those
back pack blowers, I am not so lucky. They sure are nice, you are
right about that. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.

Hi Dave 👋,
I guess you can call that the Temperature Tail 🌡.

I wouldn't want to be even outside in those kind of temperatures not to mention swinging a rubber sledge beating the coal out of cars! I couldn't survive. Coldest I have experienced here in the Dallas area was -2 back in 2021. Needless to say we're not equipped for that, lol.

@@ThatsDavesOtherDoings if EV charging keeps those black diamonds rolling out of the Cumberland mine i'm all for it.
Better bring home few buckets of coal home for supplemental heat! 🥶
Way back when they ran a good many lumps I did do that CCscott.
Fire place now doesn't have a grate and this coal is pretty fine,
so it wouldn't be like burning lump coal. There used to be coal yards
all over the place that sold house coal, but those are a thing of
the past now. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
@ That’s very interesting stuff right there! In the immortal words of RR Dave, How bout that? 😉
There has to be a way to keep the rails warm. Like using some sort of item like a heating blanket but for the rails.
Many railroads have propane switch heaters, just turn them on
and they keep the switches thawed out Robert. We can't afford
to do that here, cheaper to pay Dave to thaw them out manually.
Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
I can't resist, given the nature of the video: "Tall cotton." Special note to everyone that cotton's also white. Will zip it now...
We're in tall cotton so far this week, much warmer, 15 and above
Eric. Trains ran good today with no problems, a welcome thing to
happen. Easy day thankfully. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
might be good batting practice for the Phillies...
How do Class 1 railroads keep their switched from getting frozen?
Most of the switches they have use propane switch heaters which
are permanently in place on each switch, just throw a switch and
the propane starts heating. Some have a pipe that carries
the propane along the switch points and when lit burns similar
to a pilot light on a gas stove Physics Phirst.
That is some nasty cold. Dave do you wear your normal boots in this weather or others?
Hi dave i know its an investment but i am wondering whats iron sinergys thoughts on your own vack truck for spills cleaning of wet spots and snow clearing
They actually considered getting their own vac truck last year,
mainly for all the spills at the prep plant Craig. They didn't do it tho.
Hi rail vac trucks are amazing but they are an electrical nightmare
to work on when something goes wrong. For all the coal spillage
we've got on the entire track I've suggested them looking into
a vacuum train, but that will never happen, so my ballast just keeps
on getting more and more plugged up. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Why dont you guys put down a large tarp on top of the switch mechanism in order to prevent snow and ice from building up?
Hmmm, never gave that a thought, it just might work. On main line
switches it would have to be removed several times a day to
get trains thru. But sure thing will happen, I put a tarp down over
a yard switch and when they want to run on that track, will forget
it's there and tear it all up, or else I will get a good cussing cause they have to remove it first.... LOL Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
Dave by chance could you revel the name of the release agent being used?
It's called side release agent Jeff. I do not know who our supplier
is and what they specifically call it other than side release agent.
That is 50% propylene glycol, 45% water and 5% dyes and additives.
The material safety data sheet on it I have just says side release agent. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
@ThatsDavesOtherDoings thanks dave
Spitter valves they work every time they are tried.
All 3 of our locos used to have spitter valves on them, but they
took them off all 3 for some reason I don't know why Roberta.
When Friday gets in one mood or another, and that tail is straight up, i call it his "antenna tail" 😸😸❗
What percentage glycol Dave?
Side release agent is 50% propylene glycol, 45% water and 5% dyes
and additives according to the material safety data sheet Yukon.

Where does the coal go after it’s dumped?
I see now that it’s loaded onto a barge
My guess is Fred is just a little spoiled 😂
You need some pocket warming bags, they are cheap and heat up once you open the packet, last for eight hours.
Interesting, never thought of that. Many of the hunters here have
those and they say it works very well Eric. Fortunately it's gonna
warm up here real soon. Really appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until we meet again.
I to use non ethanol gas but on my older generators I add a lead additive. But I guess I’m about due to get new equipment that will run on that e stuff. Try a heavy air hammer and see if you can get any use out of it. Instead of a sledgehammer ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
Or a jackhammer 🥰
Electric. Not air or batteries 🪫
12:00 poor homeless kitties😢
You should build a cardboard box wrapped in garage bags with Styrofoam inside so they have a place to stay warm
They sell a cat house that has electric heat, but I see a lot of cat videos from Japan and they build cardboard boxes for them for the winter.
They do TNR to have them get fixed and have their shots.
I feel bad for the abandoned cats
Those kitties here are feral, you can't get near them, although the
guys do put our feed for them every day ocsrc. They go in the
sheds, there's a small hole in the door they can get in to get out
of the wind. My son has an outside cat here at home and he has
a nice plastic box for the kitty with a heating pad inside. Really
appreciate your watching and happy rails to you my friend until

They make permanently installed switch heaters, wonder why the coal company hasnt put them in 🤔❓ would save a lot of wear and tear on you!
I never gave Walmart a
thought. She went to the garage that side swiped her doors
(they put new doors on in a matter of days for her). They put a
new battery in. About a month ago i cleaned her terminals and
put some really good stuff I use on all my equipment to keep
the terminals free of corrosion. I wish you had written in before
she went, but will tell her next time she goes to the garage to have
them check her alternator output. Good point. I did talk with
our environmental department about the Binford 9000. They
were worried I'd set all the bridges on fire...... But one can always
use More Power!
