The cars are screaming past the starting line" In my eyes, one of the tent-pole games of that early 2000's wave of sport/racing games that had an X-games styled announcer talking about how bad ass everything was. Another hallmark of that early PS2 style that seemingly oozed into every series.
Did this channel really 100% coin the term Digital Apocalypse? Because kudos, man. I can't get over the fact of how well it describes the mood and overall aesthetic of early 00s videogames.
Fun facts about this franchise: ridge racer had two trilogies running side by side for arcade and console. Ridge racer 1+2 and rave racer for arcade & rr:revolution, rage racer & R4 making up the console trilogy. RRV isnt a sequel to R4 but rather a sequel to Rave Racer (the menu music is from that game) which was Kazuhiro mori's (programmer + director) last game before leaving namco to work at Sega (sega rally 2 + initial D arcade stage 1-8). RRV not only had an arcade release but saw the return of Seaside route 765 ( the OG track from RR1) which was expanded into ridge city (the construction work from the first game was finished hence why the roads are wider in green park) But was also the first game since Rave racer to reintroduce the cars from the OG arcade games now with manufacturers and model names attached to them + the slipstream mechanic introduced in Rave racer returns. Ridge racer (PSP ) aimed to unify the entire franchise by featuring every track + manufacturer from both trilogies, retconning R4 to taking place in Ridge State and Rivelta and Lizard being bought out by soldat and Danver respectively ( hence why the rivelta crinale became the soldat crinale) along with bringing back an updated version of Ridge Racer 1s handling model which is why theres a boost mechanic from drifting ITS NOT BECAUSE NITROUS WAS POPULAR AT THE TIME its because in the og RR there was a well know bug turned mechanic (In Japan at least you cant even google it in english) called "silent drift"/"シレントドリフト" where in drifting with minimum steering angle (so you cant hear your tyres) will lead to gaining speed while drifting and getting a speed boost if you watch a speedrun of the first RR youll see people doing it. The handling types "mild" and "dynamic" are based on R4/RR5 (grippy and short drifts ) and RR1 (long and lose drifts requiring more inputs to controll) respectively This was ultimately why the franchise's handeling model changed to how it was in the HD era, if you ever play those games id recommended keeping that in mind cause almost popular video ive watched featuring RR psp or RR7 misses the point or misunderstands the purpose of the various handling types or just dismiss the boost mechanic as ripping off burnout which ironically criterion games have there own version of silent drift called "micro drifting" which functions and behaves the same as SD 🧐

Got one more for you: There was a scrapped garage feature in RR5. The music for it actually ended up being "Quadra" and "Quadra ~Introduction~" from Tekken 4's OST. This is verifiable from the Ridge Racer V Bootleg OST and the Tekken 4 OST for song comparison.

While I do find games designed with nitrous in mind interesting as well (RR7s approach wasn't that bad, Xenon Racer was designed with boost in mind), but I dearly miss games that really understand to use game mechanics for variation. Track design was a big part to make that work as well, but that artisan mastery is lost in time.
Tekken Tag/4, Ridge Racer V, & Ace Combat 4 all feel kinda connected tone wise (those series around that time kinda felt connected in that way in the 90s and 2000s in my opinion)

It was the first Ridge Racer game I got for home consoles, it's art design had me at a loss for words and inspired me in what kind of style I wanted to have with my own projects, and, probably most of all, it introduced to the greatness that is Boom Boom Satellites, my absolute favorite band of all time. R.I.P. Michiyuki Kawashima, we all miss you very much... Oh yeah, and The Mad Capsule Markets also rock!
I only got this game because I needed something to play on my PS2. I've never been a racing game fan, but RR5 was SO MUCH FUN! I played this game to death, and it was worth it.
Ridge Racer V will always have my favourite soundtrack of the series. The game itself may be my favourite too, as the higher difficulty and more intense driving atmosphere really gelled with me. It really gets you feeling like this street racer plowing through cities and highways.
I like this video format a lot it allows charlie to release videos more frequently and i reckon it’s probably less pressure and more experimental much like the ps2 era of video game development we will probably get great video more frequently
That insecurity you mentioned of the series' simplicity is why I think bamco is hesitant to release another Ridge Racer. Unbounded felt like a result of that insecurity of "just being a simple drifty arcade racer won't cut it anymore" while it got inspirations from its contemporaries that ironically take some inspirations from Ridge Racer. That, and the last few entries didn't do well. Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune is now their staple arcade racer.
I think RRV played a big role in that sentiment. It was the last attempt to bring back that kind of game. Type 4 tried to hold on with a big roster of cars (which makes designing specific characteristics more difficult) and great presentation and graphics for it's time. Afterwards they tried R:Racing Evolution, which didn't work out and the later Ridge Racers (6/7, Vita, Accelerated & Slipstream) tried to be a more "modern" arcade racer. Ridge Racer always seems to bring up the expectation of state of the art presentation, so I suppose it doen't get accepted as a scaled back niche game with a lower budget. And even lower budget arcade racers still have troubles being profitable. I think there is simply no business case for it.
The only Ridge Racer on PS2, and actually benchmark for racing game that later released with ofc banger music, intense gameplay and once spotlight for Ai Fukami
RIDGE RACER V also is THE ONLY EVER Ridge Racer game that had Endurance Racing, 99 TRIAL in Ridge Racer 1 Novice Course. In it, the player races 99 laps. Man, good times. 😭
I liked how the driving in V felt compared to the others. Before the games were iterating on the PSP''s gameplay, it felt like a nice evolution of the PS1 Ridge Racers. You can feather the gas pedal without triggering a drift. You can turn some corners without needing to drift, and the grip/drift(or grip gooder) states didn't feel like a complete binary. PSP onwards where focused on drifting, while the normal corning is almost understeery compared to this.

Such a cool game with some great vibes (as long you shut up the guy in the options) I was surprised by how hard the hard mode is, they don't lie about the difficulty, lol. Also, yeah you need to actually press the analog button to get analog stick controls and I recommend setting the accel to digital. Happy drifting and happy holidays!

I remember randomly picking up this game for my ps2 first game i ever played on it actually and when heard the first track fogbound i know that i was ridge racer fan for life its special to me because of that

This game gives me Tekken 4 vibes, from its somewhat darker tone, presentation and music and I’m all the way down for it. It feels like if you went into city you’ll find the building stage from T4 with Law and Paul fighting on top of it
This game (and the series as a whole) shares musicians with Tekken. Most notably this game has some tracks from Nobuyoshi Sano (sanodg), who did the PS1 remixes of Tekken 1-3 soundtracks as well as some original music for Tag 1 onward.
It really can't be overstated how vital it is to play this (and other early PS2 games which use field rendering) on a 480i CRT television. It's shocking how much worse the image quality gets when you blow the game up to fill a modern fixed pixel display.
my first Ridge Racer love was the PSP version. that sucker gets so hard towards the end that the nitrous just felt like an integral part of the gameplay. (& i still listen to Rotterdam Nation Remix & Rareheroes like once a month!)
Kind of a shame this one never took off in the same way R4 and the other games did. Personally speaking I think it's probably the best Ridge Racer and I say that even as someone who's really biased for R4. All the cars handle differently, the drifting feels amazing, the courses are fun to race on and while i'm not as big on the music and UI as I am for the other games, it's a relatively minor complaint to just how awesome everything else is.
I went through 3 copies of this game, because the PS2 was my very first game console, and me and my brother couldn’t keep the disks unscratched for the first year or so, but my dad was nice enough to buy me a new one each time, but it always required some sort of manual labor lol. This game, Gran Turismo 3, and the SSX series on Ps2, Pokémon, Mario Kart, and Catepillar Construction Zone on Gameboy; Halo series, MTX Mototrax on FIFA 2005, Lego Starwars, and Star Wars Battlefront Xbox. NFS Underground Rivals, and Tigerwoods PGA tour on PSP. These were all my favorite games on every system I had as a kid.
I was surprised not to see any mention of the slick UI in RRV. Just going through the menus in this one was a real treat. I would love to see a remaster of this game, and no, Ridge Racers doesn't count. While I had fun with those games and 6 and 7, they were too smooth and restrained when compared with RRV. Thanks for paying a little attention to the final honest Ridge Racer game. And for not talking about type 4 too much, lol.
Ever since you recommended Ridge Racer type 4, I've been actively searching for, and playing all the Ridge Racer games. Unfortunately still missing the other three PS1 games. I find it interesting you didn't mention the new lady mascot they got for five, and according to the "ether forms" said she got so much negative reception that they brought back Reiko for future titles. Kinda wish we got a Ridge Racer that combines Type 4's style and story with 5's gameplay. Hell I'll replay Type 4 on my (newly acquired!) PSP for that style alone. I want a Ridge Racer 8 deep down, but it would probably not live up to those original titles... Then again Ace Combat 7 was a success... Up to that BN by this point. 😅
After watching your R4 video I got inspired to play all the ridge racers myself, and found myself quite disappointed with this game after R4 blew me away. It's interesting that you and I have almost entirely the same complaints though, just how much that effected the enjoyment is different. Another great video as always
Would love to see your take on the Tokyo Xtreme Racers series, especially Zero on the PS2. It feels that it has the same classy look as RR5, but with more open ended racing and RPG elements.
Ridge Racer 4 and 5 clear it in style and presentation. I had that game as a kid and hated it at first because it felt like a budget title but once I got into it I couldn't put it down
Hope you'll eventually get to talk about Unbounded, I know that game basically killed the franchise but it's still a wicked racing game despite it not being like Ridge Racer at all.
I haven't played RR5, but I have RR6 on my Series X (thank God for backwards compatibility, and MS' team putting as much up on BC as they did) and... whichever PSP Ridge Racer is playable on PS4 _(seriously,_ thank *God* for backwards compatibility! And for the fact that it's one of the few games Sony bothered with before once-again abandoning the BC content en masse just like SCEA did back during the PS3 days.... _*sigh)._ I'm looking at all the footage for RR5 here and it's _pretty_ clear that those titles were all built on top of the technical base here. Like, practically identical - fire this up in PCSX2 and up the resolution and I'm sure it looks _mostly identical_ to Ridge Racer 6, sans the slight green color grading on that one. So I'm not sure I NEED to play RR5 specifically, but I definitely appreciate the foundation laid down here because RR6 and "RR PSP" are fantastic... though the opening in RR6 doesn't have Reiko Nagase looking as good as RR5's intro here, imo ;) Man, Namco really needs to make a Ridge Racer 8. _A real one,_ I mean - I'm well aware that Namco's thus-far unproven Singapore studio *was* working on a Switch Exclusive (... _For some reason???)_ RR8 and screenshots leaked earlier in the year, but that's stupid. Anything that's not got the words, "Mario," "Zelda," "Smash," "Pokemon" and/or, "Kart" in the title never sells on Nintendo hardware; not after the honeymoon period around launch, anyway. Ridge Racer is a big deal and Namco needs to give a revival the same kind of multiplatform treatment as Ace Combat 7; get that thing looking as GORGEOUS as possible and put it on Xbox, Playstation and PC platforms.
I would argue that playing RRV vs RR6/7 is a huge difference, because the games feel very different in it's driving. The style of RR6 can be seen as an evolution, but I highly doubt that it's based on RRV.
It's worth noting this game supports the neGcon PS1 controller, though unlike the PS1 Ridge Racer games it makes it even harder imo. RRV is such a great capstone to the classic series, and it's fitting we got one final hurrah in the city that started it all before the nitro era of the series (just gonna ignore Ridge Racer DS... lol)
That's the thing about later ridge racer games that always bothered me really, i honestly can't care for the drift and boost centered gameplay, mainly because it all boils down to you needing to build boost meter and hitting your marks, boosting at VERY specific points of the track to keep your speed rather than just outright racing. Another thing about the later games is that they feel pretty stiff as if you're on rails and without a lot of freedom of movement. If namco ever does a ridge racer revival (doubtful) i really hope they just bring things back to the basics and keep it a tough, aggressive yet stylish and rewarding racer
The original games were pretty much on rails whenever you initiated a drift but that's fine imo, you at least had a good reason to not drift where it wasn't neccessary. Otherwise I totally agree, the boost mechanic detracts from the actual driving aspect and cheapens the whole experience. Been playing RR2 PSP for the first time and just did the first set of max tour races. Winning is literally a case of building up 3 boosts and using them all at the end, the first two and a half laps are effectively pointless lol

One neat detail is in the options a test section to calibrate the PS2 analog buttons. Namco was one of that most used that feature in that generation.

All the cars handle differently, the drifting feels amazing, the courses are fun to race on and while i'm not as big on the music and UI as I am for the other games, it's a relatively minor complaint to just how awesome everything else is.

7:25 could not agree more with that sentiment. It was the last game in it's genre.
I went through 3 copies of this game, because the PS2 was my very first game console, and me and my brother couldn’t keep the disks unscratched for the first year or so, but my dad was nice enough to buy me a new one each time, but it always required some sort of manual labor lol.
This game, Gran Turismo 3, and the SSX series on Ps2, Pokémon, Mario Kart, and Catepillar Construction Zone on Gameboy; Halo series, MTX Mototrax on FIFA 2005, Lego Starwars, and Star Wars Battlefront Xbox.
NFS Underground Rivals, and Tigerwoods PGA tour on PSP.
These were all my favorite games on every system I had as a kid.

I was surprised not to see any mention of the slick UI in RRV. Just going through the menus in this one was a real treat. I would love to see a remaster of this game, and no, Ridge Racers doesn't count. While I had fun with those games and 6 and 7, they were too smooth and restrained when compared with RRV.
Thanks for paying a little attention to the final honest Ridge Racer game. And for not talking about type 4 too much, lol.
The last CRT TV I had, was pretty good, and I wish I still had it now. It was the only 32" CRT I ever owned.

I'm surprised that Sony hasn't made any recent Ridge Racer games. It'll be nice that they make a new one for the PS5.

Ever since you recommended Ridge Racer type 4, I've been actively searching for, and playing all the Ridge Racer games. Unfortunately still missing the other three PS1 games.
I find it interesting you didn't mention the new lady mascot they got for five, and according to the "ether forms" said she got so much negative reception that they brought back Reiko for future titles.
Kinda wish we got a Ridge Racer that combines Type 4's style and story with 5's gameplay. Hell I'll replay Type 4 on my (newly acquired!) PSP for that style alone.
I want a Ridge Racer 8 deep down, but it would probably not live up to those original titles... Then again Ace Combat 7 was a success... Up to that BN by this point. 😅

After watching your R4 video I got inspired to play all the ridge racers myself, and found myself quite disappointed with this game after R4 blew me away. It's interesting that you and I have almost entirely the same complaints though, just how much that effected the enjoyment is different. Another great video as always

Would love to see your take on the Tokyo Xtreme Racers series, especially Zero on the PS2. It feels that it has the same classy look as RR5, but with more open ended racing and RPG elements.
Ridge Racer 4 and 5 clear it in style and presentation. I had that game as a kid and hated it at first because it felt like a budget title but once I got into it I couldn't put it down
You have already played Tekken 4 and Ridge Racer V, but you now MUST play ACE COMBAT 04 to complete the Namco psuedo-trilogy.

I disagree on your opinion on the entries after this as i feel Ridge Racer/2 on the PSP is the best in the series, the drifting is so satisfying.
I haven't played RR5, but I have RR6 on my Series X (thank God for backwards compatibility, and MS' team putting as much up on BC as they did) and... whichever PSP Ridge Racer is playable on PS4 _(seriously,_ thank *God* for backwards compatibility! And for the fact that it's one of the few games Sony bothered with before once-again abandoning the BC content en masse just like SCEA did back during the PS3 days.... _*sigh)._ I'm looking at all the footage for RR5 here and it's _pretty_ clear that those titles were all built on top of the technical base here. Like, practically identical - fire this up in PCSX2 and up the resolution and I'm sure it looks _mostly identical_ to Ridge Racer 6, sans the slight green color grading on that one. So I'm not sure I NEED to play RR5 specifically, but I definitely appreciate the foundation laid down here because RR6 and "RR PSP" are fantastic... though the opening in RR6 doesn't have Reiko Nagase looking as good as RR5's intro here, imo ;)
Man, Namco really needs to make a Ridge Racer 8. _A real one,_ I mean - I'm well aware that Namco's thus-far unproven Singapore studio *was* working on a Switch Exclusive (... _For some reason???)_ RR8 and screenshots leaked earlier in the year, but that's stupid. Anything that's not got the words, "Mario," "Zelda," "Smash," "Pokemon" and/or, "Kart" in the title never sells on Nintendo hardware; not after the honeymoon period around launch, anyway. Ridge Racer is a big deal and Namco needs to give a revival the same kind of multiplatform treatment as Ace Combat 7; get that thing looking as GORGEOUS as possible and put it on Xbox, Playstation and PC platforms.
I would argue that playing RRV vs RR6/7 is a huge difference, because the games feel very different in it's driving. The style of RR6 can be seen as an evolution, but I highly doubt that it's based on RRV.

It's worth noting this game supports the neGcon PS1 controller, though unlike the PS1 Ridge Racer games it makes it even harder imo. RRV is such a great capstone to the classic series, and it's fitting we got one final hurrah in the city that started it all before the nitro era of the series (just gonna ignore Ridge Racer DS... lol)

Can anyone explain why we got these "PAL" version downgrades and what they were?
That's the thing about later ridge racer games that always bothered me really, i honestly can't care for the drift and boost centered gameplay, mainly because it all boils down to you needing to build boost meter and hitting your marks, boosting at VERY specific points of the track to keep your speed rather than just outright racing. Another thing about the later games is that they feel pretty stiff as if you're on rails and without a lot of freedom of movement. If namco ever does a ridge racer revival (doubtful) i really hope they just bring things back to the basics and keep it a tough, aggressive yet stylish and rewarding racer
The original games were pretty much on rails whenever you initiated a drift but that's fine imo, you at least had a good reason to not drift where it wasn't neccessary. Otherwise I totally agree, the boost mechanic detracts from the actual driving aspect and cheapens the whole experience.
Been playing RR2 PSP for the first time and just did the first set of max tour races. Winning is literally a case of building up 3 boosts and using them all at the end, the first two and a half laps are effectively pointless lol
What do you mean it's harder than 4? It felt nearly impossible to get a through normal difficulty in that one already
