30 Things You Need to Throw Away from Your House

  • According to the National Association of Professional Organizers, we spend at least 1 year of our lives looking for stuff. So why do we hold on to things? The answer is simple. Not everything comes with an expiration date. So, we’re unsure when we should get rid of old items. But, ditching things that we no longer use can help us maximize space and improve productivity.
To help yourself declutter, you have to follow one simple rule. Chuck away anything you haven’t used in the past two years. Now, don’t go around putting everything in boxes. That’ll create a huge mess. Instead, do one item at a time!

    SUMMARY:
    - The only reason to keep single socks is if you’re looking to get crafty and upcycle them.
    - People put a lot of pride and effort into creating their movie collections, but with the push of a button, you can transfer all of them on to a hard-drive.
    - Show your hair some love. It’s better to invest in a few good quality hairbands than having a 100 of them constantly breaking.
    - We hold on to our spices in case we need to give our dishes some extra flavor. But, we keep them way too long.
    - Razors that are kept in a moist environment tend to get rusty twice as fast. Shaving with rusty razors can cause burns and skin infections.
    - There are places you can take your plastic bags and recycle them, putting an end to the ever-growing mass.
    - Skincare products that are rarely used are a great source of bacterial growth. So, it’s safer for your skin if you get rid of them.
    - Things like colored pens and little note pads make us feel more organized. But the ones that’ve been sitting in your drawer can be donated.
    - The truth is, most of us have a few favorite coffee mugs. The rest of them sit in a cupboard collecting dust.
    - There are better ways to remember your adventurous vacation than holding on to tiny shampoo and soap bottles from the hotel you stayed in.
    - Unless you’re an electrician or an engineer who can get inventive with their old power cords, there’s no reason to keep them.
    - If you still have the receipt from the take-out place you ate lunch at a week ago, then you know what to do.
    - This is a huge mistake! There are many things that can go wrong with old prescription medication, so it’s better to get rid of them.
    - Take-out menus are like emergency service phone numbers. But with all the take-out places having their menus online, there’s no reason to keep them.
    - If your loofah is more than a month old, it should be replaced. As time progresses, they get dirtier.
    - Whether it’s a keyboard waffle maker or a normal toaster that you’ve used once, don’t hold on to it. Some appliances are more trouble to use than to not.
    - If your bathroom towels begin to feel like cardboard boxes, this is a sign that they’ve reached their lifespan.

Most of the things you mentioned can be recycled. Old sheets cover my plants during a freeze and I also place them on the floor for wet muddy dog paws. Old towels and some cotton clothes get converted to rags. Plastic containers without lids get used seeding garden plants. Card board I use to place under art projects or furniture make overs. Etc. My motto: repair, repurpose, or recycle and if all else fails donate or throw away!

"Throwing away" is a careless response. I segregate unwanted clothes. Decent clothes go to the needy and poor. Old towels become kitchen cleaning rags. Old bed sheets and pillow covers become door mats. Renew, Reuse, Recycle.

Another use for old linen - especially if you are a gardener - is to wrap your cotton towels and sheets around a generous amount of manure. Roll it up into a "sausage" and bury the sausage around your shrubs etc where the feeder roots are. Excellent long term fertiliser trick.

Softness depends on how many threads it made of.

    • @theragingplatypus4743
      @theragingplatypus4743 3 роки тому +7

@@Victoria8DeLeon People think that but there's more to it. It's one of many factors. It depends on what each of those threads is. Some fibers are stiffer than others, even different cottons with the same thread count. I've had dreadful 600 count sheets.
Think of leather. There's no "fibers" but comes in many "softnesses". It depends on the animal, how the leather is cured, whether it's been wet or not and age.
The proteins in the material get denatured which means they change shape. This is how curling your hair works. It is the same hair but you literally change the structure of the protein.
Additionally, the surface of the fibers gets "polished" over time. Just like sanding wood makes it smoother, the abrasion of your skin and washing smooths the surface over time.
This is why people like old jeans. They ARE softer and more supple as they age. Same thing with sheets.

My towels don't usually start to feel like "cardboard" but they do start to fray and shred. I put them in a basket that I have set aside and when it's full, I take it to the county animal shelter.

I spent this rainy day sorting all the supplies I had all around the house. Amazing seeing these things in one place. Soaps, extra toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoos, medical supplies, lotions etc. To save space, I put each category in 2 gallon ziplock bags lined up on a closet shelf. I now have "prepper" supplies to use in the rest of the year and beyond!

I keep old calendars to cut out the favourite pictures and turn them into cheap wall art. Stick the pics in a cute frame and they look amazing. I'd say two thirds of the art in my house came from old calendars...along with a handful of great recipes.
As for chipped crockery, there's this thing called clear nail varnish that works wonders. Just make sure the chip is clean and dry, then apply a couple coats and leave it to dry. Voila, a sealed, food safe dish saved from the trash. I've got several in my cupboards that have had the treatment and it's still holding up really well.

We are living in a wasteful throwaway society. Do we have to throw everything out only to buy something else new and shiny? We should be encouraged to keep what we have and reuse it in creative ways to its full potential. Our belongings only become a problem if they are not stored correctly and there’s no plan to use it in another way.

I agree about the spices only to a point: if they're ground, they won't last long, especially if you don't keep them in a cool, dark place. But, anything you can keep in whole form is different. Keep your whole seeds, berries, pods and roots in the dark and cool and they will last you for years. Grind them yourself when you need them - I suggest a good, heavy mortar and pestle that'll last you a lifetime instead of electric grinders. A tip: just before grinding, gently heat the whole spices on a dry pan; that'll free up the volatile oils and give you more flavor.

@@ecallk5544 i used to agree but honestly, done right it's easy peasy. For example, if my son pops something on that doesn't fit then he takes if off and i pop it in an 'old clothes' box in the cupboard. When it's full it goes to a charity shop, which is open and i go past on the way back from school. This works well for me but i live near shops. Appreciate everyone's lives are different and not everyone is so near a shop. For me owning less things and having regular clear outs have cut my cleaning time in half, easily. Plus i loose things way less than i used to.

As a prepper, I would say that you should rotate certain items, like medications, instead of disposing of them. What I mean is that, if you still have leftover medication, when you receive a new prescription, continue using the old, until it’s used up. Like a FIFO (first in; first out) system. This will allow you to use what you still have, perhaps, without it expiring and it will also save you money. Newer items should, basically, always go to the back.

You could donate mini shampoo & such to shelters. 5. If you use a credit/debit card for purchases, you should shred them because they have the last 4 digits of your card number on them. 6.
