      Thanks!! Quartz crystals are just so fun to dig and they are probably some of the most common crystals out there. someday I'd love to find some Smokey quartz or amethyst but for now I'm more than happy with the clear quartz I've been finding😁

    I’m out here in BC as well and you’ve really inspired me to get out more and explore! Recently was diagnosed with cancer in June and awaiting stomach resection. Rock hounding has really helped get me out of my head and keep moving . Thanks for sharing your adventures/hunts with us it’s greatly appreciated 💝✨

      Thanks for watching!! Always great to have a hobby to keep the mind occupied. There's so many other hobbies out there but rockhounding is always one I come back to. This summer has been a bit slow for me but hopefully soon I'll get around to doing some more traveling. Good luck on your adventures🙂

    Really awesome finds today. Super cool quartz clusters, crystals and calcite too.
    This video just reassured my most recent crystals finds with the iron staining. Had them sitting in vinegar for a few and the iron is pretty much gone now. Didn't really need the iron out, might try it anyways.

    • @NWRockExplorer
      @NWRockExplorer  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks!! I was too scared to try iron out on that yellow one, the colour was just too cool!! All the rest went into iron out to soak, the bigger cluster is still soaking as I write this. I still have to find a good way to remove lichen but for now a long soak in iron out seems to help🙂

      I've been wanting to do that for a long time!! this trip was intended to be like that but I ended up running into some problems on this one. I'll have to give it another try on my next trip!!😅

    That's a nice spot! I really like those small quartz plates and clusters. Interesting to see the big calcite crystals. What's the hardness of calcite compared to quartz? Thank you for this quick crystal hunt!

    • @NWRockExplorer
      @NWRockExplorer  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks!! calcite is a fairly soft mineral with a Mohs hardness of 3 meaning it is harder than a fingernail but softer than a copper penny. Quartz on the other hand is very hard at a Mohs hardness of 7 not even steel can scratch it!!😁

    Those were really nice quartz crystals. I heard that you were trying to find a good place to camp. Did you finish your camper? If you did I would like to see how it turned out.

      That trailer has been on my mind a lot lately, just been a little too busy with other projects. I am going to order up some parts for the electrical system and maybe some hardware so I can make all the cupboard doors. I'm also looking for a pickup that I can pull it with, not exactly sure what I'm going to get yet. Just recently picked up a job in construction which allows me to choose some of my hours, should help speed things up and allow me to finish up some projects😁

    I have really enjoyed watching your amazing videos and you are brave to adventure off on your own in the wilderness. I wonder how far you walk to your destinations? But, I’m curious what makes a great rock collecting location? I believe you can find rocks anywhere but some spots are better than others so how do you decide what location you want to find collectible rocks, minerals or crystals? Do you do research first of certain areas on Google maps that you believe would have potential finds, or even high quality rock specimen? I live in Alberta and we don’t have as much beautiful rocks to collect and find because local geology is different everywhere and you are very lucky to rockhound all over B.C. I wonder if you lived in Alberta where you would rock hound and what you would look for? If you have any recommendations or tips to give me I would love to know. Happy rockhounding and keep safe.

      Thank you!! A lot of my spots aren't very remote, roadcuts and old quarries mainly but I do have a few spots that can be a 5+ km hike. This spot in particular is right in a roadcut so you can drive right to it which is nice!! What I usually do first when searching for new spots is look at geological maps, that way you get a bit of a lay of the land you want to explore and know where claims, provincial parks and reserves are just to make sure I'm digging legally. Also look for any old papers from geological surveys they can be a huge help too . Next I go scavenging any rock I can find and hope that I come across something interesting. also try to research other localities around the world, if you have similar geology in your area you just might have a chance it finding that gemstone. If I were in Alberta I would mainly be looking for fossils, chert, calcite, and maybe even some selenite. I haven't spent much time out in Alberta but there is definitely some interesting minerals to be found🙂
