If Maverick was in the US Army Air Force. For the Navy it would have been the F4F Wildcat, F6F Hellcat, F8F Bearcat or F4U Corsair. Heck if they wanted to keep Goose, Maverick would be flying Dive Bombers instead of Fighters. So the choices would be SBD Dauntless or SB2C Helldiver.

It's cool to see Steve follow in his father's footsteps in Hollywood. His father Steve Hinton Sr is a legend in aviation with him holding numerous air race records, has flown literally hundreds of vintage aircraft over the years and has been involved with nearly 100 movies and shows (Dunkirk, Iron Eagle, Ironman, Pearl Harbor, Black Sheep Squadron, Air Force One to name a few) over the last 50 years. His son Steve Hinton Jr has broken some of his father's records and currently holds the world speed record for piston powered aircraft over a 3km course (In a modified air race P-51 if I recall). Literally one of the best people to include in a project like this.

@Support Ukraine 🇺🇦 The P51 wouldnt be heard of today if it wasnt for its British engine. The P51 was an export fighter, designed entirely to a British order for s British requirement. When we got it delivered though it was absolutely horrendous. Nothing like the fighter it would become. It had poor speed ,poor climb rate it turned about as well as a boomerang selotaped to a brick.
But then geniuses of the British aircraft industry had an idea, "let's put a Rolls Royce Merlin in it".....
And the rest is history. Basically the P51 was a pile of broken junk. It took the Bris to fix it

    • @Matsumoto77
      @Matsumoto77 2 роки тому +9

@@mikeycraig8970 while yes the merlin took the mustang to a whole new level, the Allison V1710 it did have when it first flew was still powerful enough to put the mustang above the latest spitfire marks available at that time in terms of speed, although it didn't have a chance above 15,000 ft with the single stage supercharger. It was by no means sluggish despite being a bit slow due to the somewhat lack of power.

Of all the WWII planes, this one was always my favorite. That Rolls Royce 12 cylinder was a beast. My father built a 1/4 scale R/C model back in the 70s when we used to go fly gas powered R/C planes when I was a kid. When he brought it out to the field, people just stared at it. It didn't have all the detail that a lot of guys incorporate today but it was still cool. It suffered a crash that was repairable but it hasn't been flown since then. That was almost 50 years ago. He still has it. I told him he should convert it to electric and get it back in the air. Not sure how well the balsa has held up though.

Spitfire: didn't have the reach, only good for point defense
Mustang: basically only mopped up, one bullet and you are done
      Wildcat: Pacific hero
Hellcat: the hero's little big sister
Lightning: all the range you need to kill an Admiral
Thunderbolt: broke the Luftwaffe's back, Mustang only flew on her glory

I remember getting a tour of that P-51 many many years ago. At the time it was called "Montana Miss." Mr Cruise then had it renamed the "Kiss Me Kate" either before or during his marriage to Katie Holmes. It is easily one of the cleanest P-51s I've ever seen. It was produced in 1944, and is a F-6K, or the photo reconnaissance version of the plane, which is how it was flown in period. Basically a P-51K-15NT model, but with several portholes for cameras to take pictures through.
Also, I love the inclusion of Steve-O Hinton in the project. Probably the finest P-51 pilot currently flying. He was my favorite pilot to root for at the Reno Air Races every year.

As far as the "oldies" go, I absolutely LOVE the P51! My second favorite is the F4U Corsair just because those inverted gull wings were so cool! Then there is a tie between the P38 Lightning (it made the coolest whistling sound), and the British Spitfire. For pure heart pounding patriotic noise factor, you can't beat the F14 Tomcat or the F4 Phantom. But that's just my opinion.

With the school founded in 1969, a Vietnam-era Top Gun (maybe starring Viper, also Maverick's dad) would make sense. Maybe flying the F4 Phantom. Tom Skerritt (Viper in the original) is pretty old by now, but maybe the movie can basically be him in 202X telling the story of his and Mitchell Sr. adventures during 'Nam and the first years of the TOPGUN program.

    10. The Bill Lebowski (1998)
I saw Elvis *23x* in the theater. I saw Top Gun: Maverick *17x* in the theater. Regal Unlimited Plus and my car not really working for 2 months which had me walking to my local theater almost every day made it happen. Look at my name. I'm honoring both films.
I already have both films downloaded to my phones and I still watch them in the theater multiple times when the weather is hot. I'm starting to think, do we have better content now? But the only reason why we have older movies up in our rankings is due to nostalgia?
Between Star Wars: A New Hope vs. Top Gun: Maverick, I actually think Maverick is the superior movie even though Star Wars had the bigger impact and legacy. Top Gun 2 has better pacing, better action, best ending that surpasses The Shawshank Redemption that can make grown men cry. And the story really isn't about the actual mission. It's about a broken man reconnecting from people from his haunted past.
I think Maverick is better than any MCU film including Infinity War and Endgame. Only The Dark Knight is as good as it but Top Gun: Maverick is more rewatchable. Might be one of the 10 best *movies* ever made. Yes, better than my beloved The Shawshank Redemption which was my #1 favorite film for 20 years. Put it next to any great film and Top Gun: Maverick holds its own from just pure entertainment and "feelz". .
Yeah, it can be a typical dumb summer blockbuster film. Maverick keeps disobeying and getting promoted. Maybe he did die at the beginning going 7600 MPH and it's all a death dream movie? The final act felt a little too stretched. But it holds its own against any great film once the credits roll and you still have tears in your eyes and huge smile on your face after you watch it for the 17th time like I did. Give me this over Citizen Kane and Gone With The Wind.
At worst, Maverick is no worse than a top 20 film on IMDb. I think the message is way more positive than something from Scorsese and Tarantino full of violence and cursing. Their films sorta glorifies the chaos and lifestyle. While you can replay Top Gun: Maverick around little children. It's patriotic but it's still sweet in story. It's the perfect love letter to fans who grew up loving the original.
If I ever become a pilot even for small planes, Top Gun 2 would be my #1. An inspiring film like the 1986 original to become a pilot or join the military. I grew up watching the original Top Gun and I couldn't believe how much better its sequel was and the OG is a classic.
I really wrestled with the idea that maybe movies are like technology? It's improving but we don't really see it. Our expectations were lower back then. Our nostalgia tells us back then was better. Then when we watch them today, it doesn't quite age as well when we saw them as kids. Top Gun (1986) is like this. Even Spaceballs (1987) which isn't that funny to me now than when I was a kid.
Original Star Wars Trilogy and Jurassic Park (1993) do remain the best of their franchises. No nostalgia required. They're just better. Can watch them today and a kid will say 1993 JP is much better than the recent ones. Dominion was awful! And Star Wars' Episode 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, and Solo (2018) are either mid at best or trash.
