Beer School: how does barrel ageing work? | The Craft Beer Channel

  • Once upon a time all beers were barrel-aged. Now we have big metal fermenters and kegs instead, but some brewers are going back to the wood.
In this episode of Beer School Jonny visits Brewdog and Siren Craft Brew to talk about barrel-aged beers - brews given extra depth by time spent mixed with wood and spirit.
This alchemy creates some of the most complex and exciting beers in the world.

I fell in love with barrel aged beer about 4 years ago. Nice video, Cheers!

Winter iun Washington state is the season for bourbon imperial stouts. This season I have enjoyed 3 in bottles and 2 more are releasing late December. All these breweries are less than 40 minutes away, 1 in walking distance. Firestone Walker is in California and the 19th anniversary is a blend of, imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels, quad aged in brandy and bourbon barrels, imperial brown in bourbon barrels and an oat meal stout in bourbon barrels. That was fantastic.

The best barrel beer I have ever had was in Munich at the Augustiner Keller. Lafayette Brewing Company in Lafayette Indiana also does good barrel beer

"designing the beer..." never thought of making beer that way before until it was said in this video. Brings a new slant to the process.

Get your hands on some of the Canterbury Brewers' barrel-aged stuff from The Foundry. They make some pretty special stuff in small batches.

Aaaah I know man. Thing is we both have day jobs, and these videos take a long time to put together. HOWEVER, we do have two planned for over the summer so there will hopefully be some coming in August...

Hey guys - the link the full interview that pops up with Brewdog seems to be missing. Has the video gone or am I missing something?

haha I was only joking Jonnie! No schedule here. It's only a hobby, not a professional channel like yours. Great minds DO think alike... and any mind that enjoys barrel aged beers is a great one indeed

We'd love to but sadly mics capable of more than what we have right now a insanely expensive, and we spend all our money on travel to cool breweries...

The Craft Beer Channel To be fair, all it takes is having whoever's manning the camera wear some headphones so they can listen to the audio and notice during the interview when people are rubbing the microphone.

I'm glad you covered barrel aging. I've started to love barrel aged beers especially bourbon barreled just as much as Porters (my favorite), and Stouts. I was hoping you do one on Porters.
But I was kind of put off by the background noises and the boom boom sounds that were present during the interviews. Really brought the quality of the videos down in my opinion.

Certainly one of your best videos. Again congrats that even I as a nerd thought I learned a thing or two. Well done guys. Now I have an insane thirst for BA beer though....maybe a Siren Maiden 14 or a Pirate Bomb I have in my fridge.

    • @MartinsBrew

Mohan Thomas steam! Do not use star san, I'm a manager at a brewery... it will also help the barrel expand and cause less leaking "loss of beer".

    • @TheCraftBeerChannel

you mean is it carbonated? Usually from the barrel it will be packaged in bottle, can, lek or cask and carbonate there either naturally or by force.
