    When I was a kid a family friend encouraged me to use winey words (grassy notes, coffee aftertaste, well balanced bouquet) when drinking chocolate milk at parties. I never knew why all the adults cracked up at the time, but in hindsight that friend was fucking hilarious.
    Edit: discourse went (and continues to go down) in the comments. I don’t want to invalidate your experiences, but for me, this was fun. Laughter was positive reinforcement, it meant I did something others enjoyed. No one was born with a perfect understanding of humor. We all learn through experience, and it’s inevitable that a kid won’t always understand what’s going on. Keep that in mind before responding. Your experiences may differ, but please don’t use your interpretation of mine as an argument.

    I just got my masters in Enology/Viticulture (winemaking essentially). This was a really well put together video. Puts things in simple terms. My biggest pet peeve in the wine industry is the flowery language in tasting notes. Just say it tastes like apricot, pineapple, and baking spice. The whole point of the tasting notes is to make it clear to the consumer what they're about to buy and the extraneous language just makes it more difficult.

      It's my firm belief that critics and reviewers aim to serve their audience more with clever writing than with useful information. Clever writing might get them more work, whereas clear, straight forward writing might or might not.

    Not an EXPERT, but when i worked at "The OG" we learned, when a wine says, 'chocolatey' it means bitter like dark cocoa, not the typical sugary milky chocolate you might be used to, if you go and get like 90% chocolate, you might have a better chance matching the flavors. It's when the bitter flavor is warm and fuzzy i guess XD

      Yea I tend to interpret flavor references like that as an example of the balance of sweetness, bitterness, etc in the wine or coffee or whatever else. Like oranges are going to be a reference for something with probably high sweetness, medium to low acidity, and like a bright not very heavy sort of feel. Apply that to coffee, wine, or whatever else. I said that twice.

    I too thought it strange to describe a liquid as “dry” until I had a particularly dark red wine and my mouth was definitely much drier after drinking the wine than it was before. I don’t know how a liquid can sap the moisture from your mouth, but I promise you it can

      Tanins in wine are called that because they “tan” things. Tan is an old Celtic word for “oak” and the tanins found in the bark of oak trees when diluted in water could ‘tan’ the skin of an animal and make leather.
      This explains both why some wines taste “oaky” (though that’s usually referring to the flavour they get from the barrels they’re stored in) and also why they can make your mouth feel dry - they’re tanning your mouth and making it very slightly leathery.
      Milk chemicals are very good at binding to tanins and preventing them from doing that to your mouth, which is why wine and cheese go together so well.

    when i studied abroad in france, my professor (whose mom is french and dad is italian) told us the first rule about wine is that if you like it, it's good wine. it does not have to be expensive. we later went to the super market for one of our french lessons, and she showed us all these wines that were amazing for around 5 euros.
    after some experience drinking wine, i know that i like red wines that are medium bodied. usually means it won't be too fruity or too acidic or too sweet, and not too overwhelming -- perfect for pairing with any meal (that's not seafood).

      ​@@isame0085 You CAN drink red wines with seafood, but you have to take into consideration that the tanins of the wine will come out stronger (more astringent) when paired with this type of dishes (due to a reaction with the seafood proteins). A red wine might also easily overpower a delicate seafood dish. So prefer a light red to be on the safer side or an old wine whose tanins have been tone down by time. If your dish can stand a more bodied wine (monkfish with chorizo sauce for example) Go for it ! An old Pinot Noir from Burgundy may pair well with this dish for example.

      @@isame0085 Rule of thumb: If you would make a sauce out of red wine for your dish, drink red wine to it. If you would make a sauce out of white wine for it, then choose the white one to accompany it. It doesn't matter if your dish is actually served with a sauce based on wine, just imagine what would be a better fit for it.

    Great video for novice wine drinkers! As someone who works in wine, the best way to ensure you're purchasing something you'll like is to talk to someone at the wine retail shop. Tell us things like what the last bottle you enjoyed was like or perhaps a picture of a label from a wine you really like. From there, we can navigate the inventory together and find you something similar or perhaps go in a different directions if you're looking to branch out a bit :) Wine is fun!

    As a fellow young adult foodie I so appreciated Melissa's contributions to the video. I often carry spices with me on campus and have been known add them to an otherwise bland college campus meal. When I have friends over for dinner I tend to talk them through the meal and the flavors I tried to create for us to enjoy. Friends have even asked me to give them foodie and wine related advise in the past. It is so wonderful to see a kindred spirit.
    Melissa, your research was amazing and helped me further understand wines. Thank you for working so hard on sleuthing out wine details and sharing your knowledge with the internet. Have a lovely day!

      Where I'm from there is usually some expensive French words on the bottle, the shelf will only tell you it's red wine or white wine. I can't whine too much tho, if you've learned as a kid that it tastes bad. You might just drink less as an adult

    I think what confuses or unsettles most people is the actual ability to put words to flavor. These words aren't completely literal (though often they are the same chemical compound) but what it reminds you of. If you suspend your disbelief and/or spend enough time around wine reiews these things just make sense. These words don't make sense unless you've somehow mapped them onto some expectations.

    I think that there's a very interesting question about this whole subject...
    "Why wine?"
    I mean, yes it can have a lot of specificity and a lot of flavours and it can vary a lot... but that goes for literally every food that isn't mass produced. Different restaurants make the same food differently, it tastes differently, with different aspects, with different ingredients, etc. Different lemonades made from actual lemons taste immensely different depending on what you put into them. Hell, even water can taste incredibly different depending on what's in it.
    But none of these has a 'language' so dedicated and validated by authorities (media platforms in this case) to describing it and and obcessing over it. What is it that made wine be the thing that has that language? - "Why wine?"
    Also, another question that goes hand in hand with this one: Wine language seems to be a eurocentric phenomenon... is there an equivalent obcession somewhere in Africa? Or an equivalent obcession somewhere in Asia? My mind immediately jumps to the Chinese and their tradition with tea, but I don't know enough to know if it developed and validated a language as unique as wine-tasting language.
    P.S.
    I noticed parallels to game-criticism language, which is pretty unique of its own. Literature criticism comes to mind as well. Art criticism in general. Seems like this kind of language is developed for anything that is socially valued in some way. But the question comes back, though: Why wine?

      It’s probably a prestige thing. Wine is seemingly the highest class alcohol, so it ended up getting the most jargon in its field.

      When we went out for dinner in Singapore and had mango for dessert I was surprised how the natives discussed the idiosynchrasies of the fruit. It very much reminded me of European wine language.

      It's even worse. In Portuguese, we don't have the same way of talking about wine that you have in English. You'd describe a wine by region, grape varieties and producer, followed by the meals it was designed to be paired (in this video Vinho Verde is a special case because it's a party wine to drink standing.) But pretty much every wine tradition has a different approach to describe the experience.
      It's also an ancient product, enjoyed by every social class from the middle east and southern Europe. From ancient Greece to the current day. Differentiation is something to be expected.

      @@videoguy640 I think because of its long and ancient history. People from thousands of years ago have created traditions around wine, which increases its perceived cultural value. It also might have something to do with modern commodification by the upper classes as a status symbol. Also, historically I guess, wine could've been and indicator for class and social status. Royalty drank imported vintage wines and plebs drank mead.

    Some of this reminds me of conversations I had growing up (like the time my Dad had me sip a sweeter red & a dry cab & had be describe the feeling - to this day that’s the reference I go to when imagining dry wines) but I love the visuals, am a sucker for some good animation, and love the approach you took to demystifying wines!!

    I worked at a winery for 3ish years and there are only 2 universally accepted opinions on wine: red should never be sweet and white should be served cold. I really loved this video! If you ever go wine tasting and want to look bouj, the “proper” way to taste wine, is to first smell it, then swirl, then smell again, and this time really get your nose in there and inhale, then taste! When you taste you want to take smallish sips and let the wine touch all the parts of your mouth. The real intense people will “aerate” the wine in their mouth by sucking air in after you take a sip, but it looks and sounds silly so some people don’t. Also I fully endorse the “have fun and just drink it” method!

    THIS WAS SO HELPFUL!!! Also, what I've learned from my mom: swirling/aerating the wine slightly changes the flavor and scent as the wine oxidizes (comes into contact w oxygen in the air), so try sipping and smelling before and after swirling. Usually I can't tell the difference, but sometimes if I don't like a wine - too sharp n acidic or something - letting it sit in the glass for a bit mellows it out.

    I love this video!! It makes me want to try and appreciate wine more. Could we get a video like that about coffee? I feel sometimes that like wine, coffee is treated very seriously with facy names and descriptions that are hard to understand. I also learned that there's objectively good and bad coffee but I still don't understand most of it.

    Pronunciation tip: everytime you see the "NH" letters in a portuguese word, think of it more like the spanish /Ñ/ sound. Not quite, but "viño" is way closer than "vin-ho".
    Also, LOVED it. Thanks for the magnificent content and never lose this incredible curiosity!

    As a fellow Canadian uni student (but raised on wine) and foodie, I must say I love this video so much. I've often helped friends pick wines to bring to date dinners or fancy events based on the menu, and this video very succinctly covers all the basics in picking and appreciating wine for what it is, an art. Kudos to both of you on this outstanding video with the sources and everything!
    As we say over a drink in French, and especially in the current circumstances, santé!

    I feel like you hit the nail on the head with that conclusion! I've always been afraid of getting into conversations with my friends who aren't obsessed with the variations in flavor profiles between different wines because I don't want to come off as snobbish. I'm not trying to be snobbish, I've just found something in passionate about and I love to talk about it. I'm by no means anywhere near the level of a true wine connoisseur, but I have built a love and appreciation for the many facets of wine and I know what I like and what I don't like. This was really well done

    Hey Sabrina, I’ve watched your videos since that time you collabed with vlogbrothers years ago!
    This video is so interesting to me! I’m a server/bartender at a mid/high-end restaurant in which 2/3 of my managers are wine sommeliers and they taught me a lot. But as a young adult in the server/nightlife industry, I know how pretentious or even simple we can describe wine. This video did a really good job doing a baseline introduction to the “culture” of wine!

    This was fantastic. I'm from Argentina and wine culture here is no joke, but most people just go with whatever they like best without much thought. That said, Malbec and Demi Sec Champagne are my faves

    As a wine snob, the best way to learn what wine you like is to pay attention when you drink a wine you like, and then keep ordering that variety! So if you already know you like white, pay attention to whether it's a Sav Blanc, a Riesling, a Chardonnay or a Pinot Grigio, and maybe why you like it. And if you find one you *really* like, remember the brand as well so you can order it again if you see it!
    Wine tasting tours is another really great way to do that, if you happen to live near a wine region. You get to taste a bunch of different wines over the day, and you'll work out ones you like or don't like (and also get nice and tipsy!).
    But yeah, paying attention to what you like and why is really useful.

    In Finland we have the term 'squat wine' for all the cheapest brands because they are always placed on the bottom shelf and you have to squat or bow down to pick them up.
