This song (and especially the unaccompanied acoustic version by the talented Mr Mercer) is one of my all time favourite songs...must have played it hundred's of times....brilliant vocalist & guitarist. I much prefer James Mercer unaccompanied to the Shins as a group, would love to see him live.

when you listen to shins songs, his voice fits right in. when you see him playing live and get to actually see the voice coming out of him...its breathtaking. guys got an insane range, one that he can jump top to bottom with little to no effort. what a gift.

Yeah, but think about some other cases of this. The Beatles, John and Paul wrote nearly every song and George wrote a good handful but Ringo wrote maybe 5. Would it be okay for them to kick him out?
I don't know, maybe I am just too nice sometimes. I am sure his band helps him write sometimes but he really is a genius so as long as the music is good, it is fine.
Haha they could have replaced Ringo at any point as far as I am concerned. Yeah, it really is the James Mercer Show at this point, but as long as there are people behind him who can play well, I think we will be okay.
There have always been people getting replaced in The Shins, James writes all the music anyway so I mean, as sacrilegious as it may be to say, it doesn't really matter who is behind him.

Many times acoustic guitar is shrill or too loud in a liveTV recording setting. The sound engineer knew to keep the (outstanding btw) vocals up in the mix.
Yeah super cool rendition by a unique talent... i did miss his falsetto... he chose to go an octave down, but hey, it sounded most excellent as well.
I don't know why, but I really love seeing his teeth.

I've only heard their music here and there over the years, I've actually never seen one of their videos except the one for this song. I Love it! and I love how he looks like a professor! XD
I love the song, too. I do wish when he performs it acoustically, though, that he took it down a step or two so he could sing the chorus an octave up like he does on the recording. That vocal leap is incredible, and a key piece to the melody. Still awesome.
I lost a lot of respect for James when I heard he kicked all the members of his band out, but when I heard this he gained it back.

Once you comprehend the lyrics, you'll understand the irony of the title of the song and how it stands as the album version.
There are few alive as capable as Mercer of carrying the melody of a song. His voice is 10 years younger than his face though.

You know someone has talent when they can sing as good or better than the album while singing live, which he definately does here.
