He didn't even want her working at the Beach Club in the first place because he didn't want to feel bad when he flirted with or dated other girls. He would not have been interested in her even if she dated someone he felt was inferior to him but Jay was a sophomore in college at Northwestern and handsome and was a writer/reporter himself.
